Winter In Brooklyn

Summary:

Prompt: Snow Shoveling

Notes:

Written for Allbingo's Winter Fest in July.

Work Text:

Clint heard the doorbell as he scrambled eggs at the stove. "I'll get the door if you'll finish the eggs," Clint said as Phil looked up from The New York Times Cross Word Puzzle.

Clint opened the front door and a young teenager was standing at his and Phil's front door. Clint recognized the kid from down the street.

"Sir," the boy said, "I'm Jimmy Hudson. I live down the street. My father got laid off and I'd really like to go on our school trip. I was wondering if you'd let me shovel your driveway for whatever you think is fair."

Where are you going?" Clint asked.

"Washington D.C.," Jimmy said. "

"You're going to love it," "I remember the first time my boyfriend took me there. Wait until you see The Smithsonian."

"I love dinosaurs," Jimmy said.

"Don't we all," Clint said. "Do you need me to get the shovel?"

"No, sir, I brought ours," Jimmy said.

"Okay, let me know when you're finished," Clint said.

"Yes, sir," Jimmy said. "You can call me Clint. "My boyfriend is the sir in this family. everybody at work calls him that. I'm just Clint or Barton."

"Okay, Clint," Jimmy said.

After Clint let Jimmy out he went back to the kitchen to make breakfast sandwiches.

"Who was that at the door?" Phil asked.

"Jimmy from down the street," Clint said. "He's trying to raise money for his school trip. He wanted to shovel our driveway."

"Hard working kid," Phil said.

"And I don't have to do it," Clint said. "I'd be thrilled if I never had to shovel again. I've seen enough snow in my life."

"And I thought you liked Iowa," Phil said.

"Bite your tongue," Clint said. "I wouldn't be sad if I never set foot in Iowa again. There's no redeeming quality to that place."

"I'll have to remember that," Phil said. "If we ever take another cross-country trip, we'll avoid the Hawkeye State."
