Work Text:
Even as he and Scott chat, Stiles keeps part of his attention on the table behind and to the right of Scott. The girl sitting there has gone from nervous to impatient to angry so far, but Stiles needs to catch her at just the right moment. Peter had arranged the coffee date for two thirty and it’s almost three now, so it should be soon.
Finally, Stiles decides the time is right. The next time Scott pauses, Stiles leans forward and says, “Hey, Scott. I think that girl back there got stood up.”
Scott turns, curious, and freezes the moment he sees her, then lets out a soft, “Wow.” She’s beautiful, after all. “Who would stand up someone like that?”
“An idiot,” Stiles says. “But his loss is your gain; you should go say hello.”
Scott turns back to Stiles, surprised. “Me? She wouldn’t want—”
“She wanted to be on a date, dude,” Stiles insists. “You’re an attractive guy. She’s reading a book on the history of the domestication of horses, so you’ve got animals in common. I bet you going over there would make her day, seriously.” Peter had been the one to identify her major, but Stiles had suggested she bring the book as her blind date identifier. Team effort.
Scott still hesitates. “The supernatural stuff kind of screws with relationships.” But he turns and looks at her again. She’s started packing up her bag.
“You’re not supernatural right now,” Stiles reminds him. “If that changes, then you can tell her it’s not working out, but in the meantime, why not enjoy the moment?” If they were seriously trying to get Scott’s wolf back, Stiles would never suggest this. That would be a dick move. But since they aren’t, it’s fine.
“Yeah,” Scott says slowly. “Yeah, you’re right.” He stands and makes his way to the girl’s table.
Stiles relaxes a little. The only real weakness of this plan was the chance that Scott would realize on his own that starting a relationship you’re expecting to fail is a dick move. Peter had been firmly of the opinion that Scott was both short-sighted and selfish when it came to relationships of all types and it wouldn’t occur to him. Looks like he was right.
Stiles hangs around long enough to finish his coffee and make sure that Scott and Annika are getting along as well as her social media suggested they would. Then he stands and waves goodbye to Scott, flashing an encouraging thumbs up on his way out.
Scott’s always blamed his inability to hold down a relationship on the supernatural shit. Hopefully finding a new girlfriend will remind him of a few of the reasons he didn’t like being a wolf at all.
