Work Text:

Screaming.

That was all the agent could manage as they shook as the cables snapped, leading to their harrowing descent. They were losing their consciousness quickly, their head pounding from their lungs in protest. The air was thinning, wisps of their hair traveling up as they slowly made their way back to the ground.

It turned dark, the sudden impact making them lose consciousness.

They fought the urge to groan, clawing their torso out the elevator shaft into the dusty ruins and rubble. They’re thankful for the mask they wore.

Their arms were shaking, their entire body just telling them to give up, yet they know they can’t. Not here.  Not when they could be faced with an even worse fate.

They’re too exhausted to use their TK, making the struggle to pull off the glasses even more of a challenge. They barely managed to save enough energy to grab their earpiece, which was still unveiling static.

It was still functional, barely connecting to a network, only for them to shatter it with the rubble they found. Call it paranoia, but they'd rather not be found by Zoraxis. They’ve seen enough of what they are capable of.

They gingerly picked it up and placed it into their coat pocket, beside the cracked glasses. If they’re lucky, maybe they can come across someone from the agency.

Nausea soon took hold as their arms pushed the rest of their body away, limping as one of the bullets from earlier grazed their skin. They might have broken a bone or two but adrenaline was enough to numb them from anything at the moment.

They have a handler to come back to.

“I think I saw someone over there!” Unfamiliar voices and footsteps launched their mind into overdrive, giving them a second wind to sprint away. If they’re bleeding right now, they’ll probably be visible easily.

Wait. Are they bleeding?

They took a second to look, the dark color of the pants and coat barely providing any visual. They suppressed the urge to sigh or make any sound at all. Don’t be found. That’s all they can think about.

Yet, with the search party encroaching on their area, it will only be a matter of time before they will be found. They need to leave.

No longer processing their pain, they stumbled across the ruins as their mind blaring so much information at once, telling them to grit their teeth as they can’t falter here. If they are bleeding, it will only be a race against the clock before the adrenaline wears off and they finally succumb to any wounds.

They tried to control their breaths, making sure their mind would focus on hearing those around them, the yells from both search parties, one from an ally, and the other an enemy. However, both are too muffled, the sirens of ambulances and helicopters with news trying to provide coverage.

They don’t have enough time. Each second they linger here, the more likely they would get caught up in a fate they don’t want.

Their mind barely registered them grabbing something with their TK to push something out of the way, too focused on using their body weight to push rubble out of the way for reasons they don’t even remember.  However, they can faintly remember a faint “Thank you” in the background before vanishing.

By some miracle, they managed to hobble into one of the civilian paramedics at the scene, clearly roughened up as they tried to fight their body from collapsing from how much they had been spent.
