In the end, the worst pain wasn’t the bruises, or the cuts, or even the cold. Instead, it was the idea that Tommy would die here, and the only people who had ever truly shown him love now believed he betrayed them. That he lied about caring. That every ‘I love you’ that slipped from his lips was untrue. At that thought he hiccupped a dry sob, shoulders painfully shaking as he let his head drop. There were no tears coming, just sniffles that broke through the silence.
