Work Text:
Violet came to a halt as soon as she walked into the room she and Rhiannon shared.
“This is…” Violet trailed off, not sure how to finish her sentence. She decided on, “A lot.”
Rhiannon was lying on her bed, leaning against her headboard. She looked up from the physics book she was reading and looked around the room. “Is it too much?”
Violet’s immediate first thought was yes . But as she continued to look around at the various Samhain decorations hanging on the walls and even along other surfaces in the room, she started to realize how much care Rhiannon must have taken to make everything so…spooky.
There were fake cobwebs with plastic spiders all around the room, one tombstone in each of two corners, and pumpkins that were carved, painted, and bare. Violet wasn’t sure she had ever been in a room as festive as this one in her life.
Violet still hadn’t answered Rhiannon’s last question, which made Rhiannon a little nervous. She swung her legs over her bed, shoulders tensing a bit. She said, “Sorry, I just really love this time of the year. My family usually goes all out and this is my way of feeling close to them I guess. I can remove some of it.”
Violet’s expression softened, and she shook her head. “No, it’s fine. Just caught me by surprise.” She strode over to her own bed and plopped down. “That’s nice that you and your family get so into it. If you couldn’t tell already, my family isn’t really the celebrating type.”
Rhiannon snorted. “No, doesn’t seem like it.”
Violet grinned and continued, “Can you imagine Lillian Sorrengail wearing a point black hat?”
Both of the girls cackled at the image. Violet asked about the Matthias family’s fall traditions, and Rhiannon spent the rest of the night telling stories about the family she missed desperately.
