Work Text:
It was a beautiful summer day, and the Miller family decided to hike on the trails outside of the town. Ellie was taking the lead with her uncle Tommy, making fun of Joel's old age, who was straggling behind. Maria was in the middle of everyone with a small toddler in her arms, trying to put everything she could reach in her mouth. The family of five was enjoying themselves, taking advantage of the lack of increase in the area.
"Wow, look at that view!!!" Ellie calls out, running ahead of the group. She stops a little before the edge of a cliff to watch the sunrise, the birds flying, and the sky looking like a pastel painting. Tommy whistles next to her.
"When you see things like this, kid, it helps remind you how beautiful the world still is," Tommy tells his pseudo-niece as his wife hands him their daughter.
"All say. It reminds us that all is not lost." Maria agreed, sitting down on a large rock. Joel put down the back he was carrying and pulled out an old but still functioning freebie.
"Looks like we got some space here to play a fun game; what do you say, kid?" Joel asked.
"Prepared to get you ass handed to you old mad!!" She runs back a couple of feet, opening her arms to catch the round projectile. Once he is happy with the distance between them, he steps back before throwing the Frisby. Ellie runs to her left to catch it before jumping and landing on her shoulder; the frisbee flies over her.
"I thought I was getting my ass handed to me," Joel laughs as Ellie stands up and brush the dirt and leaves off. Valery can be heard laughing at the commotion.
"I'm just warming up." She walks back, getting the frisbee from the pile of leaves and tossing it back to Joel. They repeated the action. Ellie was unsuccessful more often than not, but the two never gave up, having too much fun.
"Alright, last time, kid, and make it count. Remember to leave this time."
"Got it." He throws it to her right. "What the hell, Joel!!!"
"I said go left!!!"
"I did go left!!!"
"Your other left!!!"
"I HAVE ONLY ONE LEFT"
Tommy, Maria, and Valary are laughing at the commotion. "Big brother, I think your age is finally catching up with you." Tommy laughed at his brother's expense, "You were throwing to your left. Not Ellie's"
"Well, the heat is just getting to me." The Frisby barely misses his head. "I need to work on your aim, kid."
Ellie sticks her tongue out at him. The family continued to laugh and play different games, eating the Tuna sandwiches they packed for the hike.
