Work Text:

"Well shit," Andy yelled as he tried unlocking the door, "I'm locked out. Did they leave already?" He tried looking through the window to see if anyone was there, and all he saw was Stogie eating a couch cushion. He banged on the window to get Stogie to stop, although that just made him move elsewhere to continue eating the cushion. "Well what am I gonna do now," Andy whispered to himself. He looked for a key but couldn't find one. Then, he considered throwing his backpack through the window and breaking in but realized he had nothing to break in with, and he knew it'd look bad if someone walked by and saw. He sat on the driveway in front of the house to think. He stared at the ground and threw pebbles around him until he saw a familiar pair of brown shoes in front of him.

"...Andy?" It was Jim. "Oh uh, hey Jim," Andy replied. Jim looked at him like he had three heads. "What are you doing out here?" Andy sighed. "I'm locked out. My parents were taking Kevin to some stupid museum and I guess they decided to leave early, so now I'm stuck out here until they get back." Jim asked, "When do they get back?" Andy looked at the ground again. "Tomorrow afternoon." Jim thought for a moment. "Why don't you stay at my place?" Andy was surprised. "Really?" Jim nodded his head. Andy thought for a moment. "Well I guess unless I want to sleep in the front yard." Jim headed for his house with Andy following behind.

As Jim and Andy opened the door they were greeted by the smell of fresh baked cookies. "Hey mom," Jim said, "I brought Andy home. He has to stay for the night 'cause he's locked out of his house." Jim's mom came rushing in. "Oh why didn't you tell me sooner? I didn't bake nearly enough cookies for both you boys." She ran back into the kitchen to make more cookie dough. "Why's your mom always so nice when I come over," Andy asked. Jim replied, "She liked you, man." Andy perked up a bit upon hearing that. "Really?" "Yeah," Jim said casually, "I think she's just glad I have one friend after having none for so long."

Andy knew that much was true. Jim was a loner most of his school career until freshman year. He preferred it that way, or so he thought. He shared several classes with Andy, including art, and was continuously partnered with him since they usually sat next to each other by teachers hoping Jim's (at the time) uptight, focused, and quiet personality would rub off on Andy. One day in art Andy was disappointed in his work, believing it was ugly. However, when Jim complimented it, he quickly drew close to Jim and they were friends ever since.

Jim and Andy walked to his room, where Jim proceeded to throw his backpack on the floor carelessly. "Put your stuff wherever," he instructed Andy. Andy set his bag down next to Jim and sat on his bed while Jim sat in the chair across from the bed. "What do you wanna do," Jim asked. Andy sighed, "I don't know." Jim thought for a moment. "Let's go have some cookies." Andy happily agreed and the two headed for the kitchen. Jim's mom was busy baking more as she noticed them come in. "Oh take whatever you want, boys," she said gleefully, "There will be more in a moment. I have chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal. If you're willing to wait I'll have more chocolate chip and some blueberry thumbprint cookies as well." Andy was mesmerized with the giant display of cookies and took a few of each kind. Jim grabbed a handful of chocolate chip cookies and quickly downed them before getting some milk out of the fridge and chugging down the entire carton. "Oh Jim honey," his mom said, "Looks like you're going through a growth spurt again." "I know," Jim replied bashfully.

Andy watched in amazement at how casual Jim's mom was. His mom would've reamed him if he just drank all the milk out of the carton like that, so it was a surprise to see that Jim's mom didn't care. "Wanna go watch tv," Jim said, waking Andy up from his thoughts. "Sure." The two headed to the living room and turned on the tv. Jim flipped through the channels while Andy watched. 'I always forget they have cable,' he thought to himself. "Why don't we watch Cheers," Jim asked. Andy agreed and the two watched the show.

A few hours had passed and it was getting dark outside. Jim was practically half-asleep already while Andy was still glued to the tv, which was now playing M*A*S*H. Jim's mom came into the room. "I've got tv dinners if you two want that. I have fried chicken and fish and chips. Andy shook Jim awake. "I'll have the fried chicken," Jim said. Andy accepted the turkey meal and the two waited for a bit before Jim's mom came back out with tv trays carrying their dinners. "Eat up," she said, "Growing boys like you need all the food you can get." Jim's face turned red at being called a growing boy, and Andy just laughed it off. "Thanks Mrs. Kuback." He dug into his fish as Jim ate his fried chicken. "Wanna trade your fries for my mashed potatoes," Jim asked, "I hate these potatoes." Andy accepted the trade and the two switched trays and continued eating. When they were done they had a couple more cookies and headed for Jim's room.

"That was great," Andy said as he sprawled across Jim's bed. Jim sat back in his chair and opened his secret minifridge to grab a can of beer. "Want one," he asked. "Sure," Andy replied. Jim handed Andy a beer and the two drank. They had a couple more cans each until they were sober-drunk, still somewhat sober but bordering on drunk. Jim felt himself getting tired as Andy rolled around on his bed, giggling about who knows what. "Can we go to bed now," Jim tiredly asked. Andy stopped and sat up. "Sure." Jim got up and turned the lights off. Andy had moved towards the wall and Jim laid next to him. Jim suddenly shot back up. "Aw we forgot to call your folks to tell them you're here." Andy yawned and said, "They won't care. They didn't even bother to leave me a key so it's their fault anyway." Jim paused for a moment. "I guess you're right." He laid back down and looked at Andy, who had somehow passed out in the time it took for Jim to respond.

Jim was staring at the ceiling when Andy rolled over and laid his head on Jim's chest, much to his surprise. He felt his heart jump at this, wanting it to mean something more. He'd liked Andy for so long, and hoped this would be a sign that Andy felt the same. However, he tried to be realistic. 'He's just asleep,' Jim thought, 'Don't look too deep into it.' The feeling of Andy curling up against him felt great and he couldn't help but respond to the touch by wrapping his arms around Andy. He shifted around a bit until he was on his side with Andy in his arms, with Andy's arms wrapped around him. He knew Andy was asleep so it wasn't a conscious decision of his, but damn did it feel great. He felt himself finally getting tired and fell asleep with Andy still wrapped up against him. This would be an interesting thing to explain in the morning, but none of that mattered in the moment. He just wanted to fall asleep with Andy.
