Baby Boot Coming Soon
Lucy stands at the sink in her bathroom, staring off into space as she washes her hands and she glances at the timer set on her phone. Two more minutes left until she can flip the test over and see if her life is about to change forever.
Tim and her have only been married for three months, the three most amazing months of her life. They are still living in their newlywed bubble, spending most nights tangled up in bed together then heading to work every morning. Tim is getting ready to take over as the watch commander at Mid-Wilshire once Grey retires next month and Lucy has quickly become one of the best training officers at Mid-Wilshire. She is currently training her third rookie and the previous two are both thriving in the department and Lucy can’t help but feel a little proud of herself.
Now she is sitting in their bathroom, Tim is at work and she is waiting for this timer to go off so she can look at the pregnancy test and see if they are going to have a baby. They decided when they got married to just let things happen, they weren’t actively trying but they also weren’t not trying. She had thrown out her birth control and they weren’t using any type of protection. They were also having sex basically every night since they got married so Lucy shouldn’t be surprised that Tim had already managed to get her pregnant.
She is four days late, her boobs are sore all the time and she has spent the past two mornings getting intimately acquainted with their toilet as she empties the contents of her stomach. All the signs say she is pregnant but Lucy doesn’t think she will believe it until she sees those two pink lines, she didn’t think it would happen this fast.
Her phone starts to ring, alerting her that the time is up and she takes a deep breath before she flips the test over and looks down at it. She flips it over and she sees two dark pink lines staring up at her, just to be sure she flips the other one over and on that screen she sees the word Pregnant.
Her eyes fill with tears and her hand automatically moves down to her still flat stomach as she marvels at the thought that a baby, their baby, is growing inside of her. In just a few months her and Tim are going to be parents. Suddenly she wishes she had waited until Tim was home before she took the tests, she wishes they could have found out together, but she starts to think of a way to break the news to him once he gets home from work because Lucy knows she will not be able to keep this secret from him very long.
She leaves the tests sitting on the bathroom counter and then walks out into their bedroom. They had moved into this house six months before the wedding, they had searched for months to find the perfect home until they finally found this one. Lucy knew the second they stepped inside that it was the one, the one they would come home to every night, the one they would fill with children and watch them grow. It was the perfect house, it had everything they had been looking for and they immediately put the offer in so they didn’t lose it.
Lucy goes to their closet and eyes the boxes sitting along the top shelf, she knows exactly what she is looking for so she grabs the step stool and climbs up to pull one of the boxes down. As she pulls the lid off she is transported back to a different time, this box is filled with mementos from her first few years as an officer. Her rookie year and the year she spent being Tim’s aide before they finally confessed their feelings and their professional partnership ended so their personal one could begin. She rummages through it until she finds what she is looking for and pulls them out.
Black, shiny baby booties. The same ones she had tried to sneak into his locker when he became a sergeant before he caught her. The same ones that she had slipped into her kitchen cabinet for his first day with Metro. Now she was going to use them for his next promotion, his promotion to becoming a father. Her stomach fluttered at the thought of seeing Tim with their baby, she had no doubt he would be the most amazing dad.
After she finds the baby booties she gets to work to prepare the rest of what she needs for her announcement. She spends the rest of the day preparing, cleaning up the house, calling her OB to set up her first appointment and reading different articles about pregnancy. She glances up at the clock and sees that she has about an hour until Tim should be home from work. She places an order for takeout to be delivered, sets up her surprise on their bed and then plops down on the couch to wait for him.

A little while later Lucy hears the garage door opening , Kojo gets up from his dog bed to trot over to greet Tim as he walks through the door. Lucy sits up on the couch and waits for him to walk into the living room. She hears him greeting Kojo then hears his footsteps down the hallway as he moves further into the house to find her.
As soon as he turns the corner he spots her on the couch and his face immediately breaks into a grin. He makes his way across the living room and she stands up to meet him, she leans up on her tippy toes to kiss his lips then wraps her arms around his waist and holds him close.
She feels him press a kiss to the top of her head before he speaks, “How was your day baby? I missed you.”
“I missed you too. My day was good, slept in a little bit, took the boy for a walk and then did some cleaning. How was your day? Any excitement?”
She felt him shake his head against her hair, “Nope, not really. I spent the morning on patrol then shadowed Grey for the rest of afternoon. Pretty easy day actually and now I’m just ready to spend the evening with my wife.”
Lucy pulls out of his embrace and smiles up at him, “Sounds perfect. I ordered takeout and it should be here in about fifteen minutes, why don’t you go get freshened up and then meet me in the kitchen.”
He leans down to give her another kiss before he turns to walk down the hallway toward their bedroom, where the announcement that Lucy has set up is waiting for him. She listens as his footsteps fade away and then she stands up and walks to the end of the hallway to lean against the wall and wait for his reaction. Within seconds he is back in their doorway, the booties in one hand and the picture frame in the other. She had taped the pregnancy test inside and written Daddy’s Newest Boot Coming Soon then set the booties next to it.
He holds them both up, a questioning look on his face as he looks at Lucy, “Luce, are you….are we…are you pregnant?”
Her eyes fill with tears as she nods her head, “Yeah babe, I’m pregnant. We are going to have a baby.”
He starts to move down the hallway towards her and she moves forward to meet him in the middle. He wraps his arms around her as soon as he is close enough and lifts her off her feet, she wraps her legs around his waist as he spins them around and buries his face into her hair. They stand like that for a few minutes before Tim pulls back, a firm grip on her so she doesn’t fall and the look in his eyes is one filled with love, his eyes are red and Lucy can see the tear stains down his cheeks.
When he speaks his voice is a whisper, “We’re having a baby Lucy.”
Lucy is overwhelmed by the excitement in his voice, “We’re having a baby. I know its sooner than we thought but I’m so excited Tim. Are you happy?” She asks even though judging by his reaction she is pretty sure she knows the answer to that question, but she just has to make sure.
His mouth drops open and he releases his hold on her, helping her down to her feet and making sure she is steady before he grabs her face with both his hands to stare directly into her eyes, “Lucy, this is one of the happiest moments of my life. I am so unbelievably happy. We made a baby. Half you and half me. We are going to be parents, and I can’t wait to take this journey with you.”
The tears are flowing down Lucy’s face by the time he finishes speaking and she surges forward to press her lips to his. The kiss is messy, their teeth knocking together because they are both smiling so big, their tears mixing together as they both cry happy tears over the news. Lucy had a lot of thoughts about how Tim would react but this moment exceeded any of those expectations and as they stand there holding each other she knows that she will remember this moment for the rest of her life.
Tim pulls away from her and drops to his knees in front of her. Lucy watches as he lifts up the t-shirt she is wearing (his t-shirt) and gently presses his lips to her still flat belly. She hears him whisper, “Hi baby, I’m your daddy, and I can’t wait to meet you.”
Lucy runs her fingers through his hair as he continues to whisper to her belly, talking to their baby that is no bigger than a blueberry and she can’t help the tears that stream down her face. This might have happened sooner than they thought but she has no doubt that Tim is going to be the best dad to their little baby and she can’t wait.
Their moment is interrupted by the sound of the doorbell, “Thats probably our dinner.” She says as Tim gets to his feet. He presses a kiss to her forehead before he walks away towards the front door to grab their food.
She walks to the kitchen and once Tim brings the food in they work together to unpack everything and set it out on plates. Lucy fills them each a glass with water while Tim sets the plates at their spots on the kitchen island where they usually eat dinner. She climbs up onto the bar stool, Tim sits down next to her and they tangle their legs together as they begin to eat.
“So, what do we do now? You have to go to the doctor right? To make sure everything is ok?” Tim asks as he takes a bite of his food.
Lucy nods her head, “I already called my doctor and made an appointment. I go in next week for my first appointment and an ultrasound.”
“Ok, just tell me when it is and I’ll make it work, I’m not missing it.”
Lucy smiles at him, “I’ll put it in our shared calendar. After that appointment I’ll make the rest of them and then we just go from there I guess. I don’t think we should tell anyone until we are out of the first trimester. I don’t want to jinx anything.”
Tim finishes chewing his food as he nods his head in acknowledgement, “Ok. It can be our little secret for now.”
They finish their dinner and Tim sends Lucy off to take a bath and get ready for bed while he cleans up the kitchen. Once he finishes he takes Kojo outside to throw the ball around with him for a little bit so he can run off his energy. Then he is slipping back into the house, locking up all the doors and setting the security system before he wanders down the hallway towards their bedroom.
He pushes the door open and stops in his tracks at the sight in front of him. Lucy is curled up on her side in bed, the covers pushed down, dressed in one of his t-shirts, her hair pulled into a braid and her eyes closed. The faint light in the bedroom frames her perfectly, one hand resting on her belly, the belly where their child is currently growing. Tim still can’t believe he is going to be a father, that him and Lucy actually made a baby together and they get to be parents. If you had told him five years ago that he was going to fall in love with his rookie, marry her and now be expecting a baby with her he would have locked you up in a mental hospital.
Lucy came into his life like a wrecking ball, knocking down every wall he had carefully built to protect himself. She challenges him more than anyone ever has, but she also loves him more than anyone ever has. She sees all of his flaws, all of his mistakes and she loves him in spite of them. He didn’t know the day she was assigned as his rookie was the day his life would change. The road here hasn’t been easy, its been difficult, its been dark, its been heartbreaking at times, but it all led them here to this moment. Husband and wife, expecting a baby and more in love than ever. Tim can’t wait to see what the future holds for them, he knows as long as they are together they can weather any storm.
He moves quietly into the bedroom, stopping at the dresser to pull out his pajamas and then into the bathroom to change and get ready for bed. Once he finishes he flips the light off, steps into their bedroom and slides into bed behind Lucy. She immediately gravitates towards him, her smaller body molding into his as he wraps his arms around her and buries his face into her hair.
He places his hand over hers on her belly and he lays there for a few minutes thinking about how lucky he is, how thankful he is to be here in this moment right now. He falls asleep with his arms around Lucy, one hand on her belly and as he holds the two most important people in his life he knows that he is right where he is meant to be.
