Work Text:

1.- first time meeting

When Yeonjun decided he wanted to use his ability to fly and his super strength to protect the people, he was taught that, in order to complete his duty, he needed to be smart and learn when and where to be in certain places.

How he managed to get locked up on a rooftop during Christmas Eve while it was snowing went beyond him; no, he was sure the door was closed when he got there, yeah, he was able to prevent a tragedy from happening and yes, maybe he could just fly off the building back to his dorm. But he barely got there in time and it was a miracle the citizens were starstruck enough to believe that the bombs he threw into the air were fireworks, and they were still out there, playing with snow and spending time with their families. If he were to just jump and fly, they would definitely see him without his suit and find out his identity, which was off limits.

There was no other choice but to wait for people to get back to their homes.

He hoped not to freeze to death.

“Hello there.” A sudden voice startled him. The black haired guy turned around to where the voice was coming from.

There was a blond guy standing there, next to the locked exit door that he couldn't bring himself to force open. He knew he could just break it to get out, but it was Christmas. He didn't want the landlord to go through the burden of replacing it during holidays.

The stranger looking at him was a bit shorter in height, but those deep, foxy eyes he was staring at Yeonjun with had him feeling miniscule before him. He was leaning against the door, arms crossed and a smirk painted on his face. He wasn't there before, that was something Choi was sure of. The guy didn't seem to be surprised to find a guy wearing a basketball uniform in the middle of a snowy evening. He wasn't wearing a coat or anything to warm himself actually. Just had a plain gray hoodie and plain gray sweatpants. If he hadn't scared Yeonjun with his sudden appearance, he would even say that he looked really cuddly.

“H-Hi.” Yeonjun tried to stay calm. He was new to the whole superhero with a secret identity thing, so his acting skills were lacking a bit. “I- I'm-... You see…”

“You don't live here, do you? I would remember a face like yours.” The guy left his place at the door and started walking towards him, making Yeonjun gulp because now that he's closer he can see how absolutely beautiful that man is.

Get a grip, Yeonjun. God.

“I don't. I- I was hanging out with a friend and he pranked me all the way up here.” Good, that sounded pretty believable. Just dumb college boys nonsense.

“He locked you out in the snow?” Why was he mockingly pouting? Did he want Yeonjun to have a heart attack? “Some friends you have, that's not nice at all.”

“Yeah, it's okay. I'll block him after this.”

“Well, I live on the third floor and my roommate went to spend Christmas with his girlfriend tonight.” Yeonjun might be a nerd with zero social skills, but he could recognize an invitation when he hears one.

Well, the hand the guy had placed on his shoulder while gracefully batting his eyelashes also helped him a lot to read the room.

“That isn't nice either.”

“I know, right?” And then a lip bite. That was it. Yeonjun isn't making it out alive and he was so grateful for that experience. Well, as a virgin in his twenties, everything counted as an experience, even the flirting, but he was looking forward to knowing what the invitation was about. “Wanna come down with me and warm up a little bit? I have a fireplace and hot choco with peppermint if you like.”

That was basically the hot version of mintchoco ice cream. He was perfect.

“I'd love that.”

“Okay, then.” The blond guy wiggled the exit door's keys between his fingers and then took his hand to guide him out. “I'm Sunoo, by the way. Nice to meet you, Yeonjun.”

Kim Sunoo was captivating like that, so much that by the time they stepped out of the threshold and Kim flashed him a smile, he didn't even question how he knew his name or how did he get to the rooftop if the door was locked when they both left.

2.- being official

Yeonjun knew he was running out of time.

Anyone would think that after three months of dating the absolute man of his dreams, the older would've figured out how to be a good boyfriend —were they even together? Neither of them had popped up the question yet, they just made out and called it a day— and a full time superhero; well, he hasn't. In fact, he would look at the sky everyday and clasp his hands together in a grateful prayer any time Sunoo bought the bullshit he would pull out as excuses.

He was understanding like that.

That night was important, just like any other Friday night he got to spend with Sunoo. His friends and his boyfriend's friends met every Friday for beers, drinking games and korean barbecue to lay out some of the steam they've been holding throughout the week. It was important for him because it was for Sunoo; he was glad both their groups got along well, and he put lots of effort into keeping it that way.

Well, they gotta behave in our wedding, am I right? The blond had said once during breakfast, for what the older literally almost choked.

Yeonjun once asked if it had anything to do with the fact that two of his exes were part of his friend group, but they somehow ended up charging the topic. He had no idea what was the younger’s response to that question, but he assumed it was negative since they never spoke about the matter again. Besides, Sunoo got along with Soobin and Kai just fine, like he got along with Heeseung.

Yeah, they could be mature adults.

And why was he thinking about his relationship issues while dragging his body inside the air conductors of one of the city's villain’s lair? He had one job and he could get caught if he didn't concentrate.

Of course there were lots of other heroes in the organization for him to just skip this job and go to please his boyfriend; nevertheless, this villain and his sidekick have been kicking his balls since he started saving people and the city.

He had to.

Just like he had to pick up his phone right that instant or the vibration against the metal walls would give his hiding place away. He also had to because it was Sunoo, and he knew better than not picking up his calls if he loved his bed.

Yeonjun also didn't understand how they were living together if they didn't want to put a label on their relationship yet, but he was a powerful loser about to get his first boyfriend, so he mostly went with the flow.

“Hi, darling.” he managed to whisper to not be heard by the people under him.

“Where are you, hyung?” Oh, no. He sounded upset. “Our Friday dinner with the guys is in 45 minutes and you haven't even gotten home. You take nearly an hour and a half to get ready and I don't want us to be late again.”

“I'm sorry, love. I'm-...” another thing Choi noticed after getting together with Kim is that he had a hard time coming up with excuses when the younger asked. After a while he was done lying and just shared enough information for his boyfriend (?) to understand he was really busy. “A bit stuck in a situation. I swear I'll get there in time. You can go first.”

Yeonjun had one ear focusing on his call with Sunoo and the other trying to figure out what the hell this asshole of a villain was plotting. That was the only thing he needed to do: spy on him. That's why he took the job, it was meant to be quick and easy, perfect for him since he had his evening already occupied.

However, before being a superhero, Yeonjun was a simp and a great boyfriend. He couldn't give his entire attention to Death Master —what an idiotic name to choose— when Sunoo was on his mind.

Let alone when he could literally hear his voice. His real voice. Not the imaginary one Yeonjun thought about when he missed the younger way too much.

“No, I don't wanna go first and have them thinking that we're fighting.” He was pouting, Yeonjun didn't have to see him to know that.

“But we're not, baby.”

“Yeah, but it'd look like it.”

“Then I could call Jungwon and Tyun and tell them we're getting there a bit late.” He suggested, trying to keep his voice low. “I’ll blame myself entirely for that. How does that sound?”

Sunoo seemed to think about it.

“Fine. I'll have our couple outfits ready then.”

Uh?

“Our what now?”

“Couple outfits, hyung!” The blond guy sounded almost offended. “We're boyfriends now! We gotta wear them.”

Did he accidentally shift to another reality by accident while he was asleep? He knew he was capable of doing so, but he never went around without noticing.

“We're what now?”

“Boyfriends, hyung. We live together, we eat together, we sleep together, we have sex. We're exclusive with one another. That sounds pretty much like a monogamous relationship for me.” Kim pointed that out so sure about his words that only Yeonjun's silence took him out of it, making him feel insecure about what he said. “Unless, you don't want to… I understand if you thought we were just seeing each other-.”

“Are you kidding me? Of course I wanna be your boyfriend!” Oh, no. Yeonjun was louder than he had expected.

It was only a matter of time for the alarms to go off. He needed to get out of there.

“I'm about to head back home, darling. Wait for me.”

And the call ended.

3.- first i love you

He needed to get his boyfriend out of the building or he would lose his mind and destroy the entire city out of devastation.

He had been out dealing with the bullshit DM was provoking all over that he hadn't been picking up his phone. Sunoo hadn't called him, but Riki, his boyfriend's best friend, had. He also sent him a bunch of texts; the building where they both lived, the one they had met each other in and that had been their home for the last year, was on fire and Sunoo wasn't picking up his phone.

He knew the city wouldn't take it well and that his mentors would give him an earful, but Yeonjun didn't care. He left DM in the middle of a fight and went to the safest corner to rip out his suit so he could get to his boyfriend as fast as his legs allowed him to; he had been attacked lots of time, he wouldn't be able to fly for while and that enraged him because that was the time he needed his flying skills the most.

While he was running down the street, avoiding all the people that almost collided against him while trying to get away from the danger zones, Yeonjun took out his phone and called his boyfriend.

For someone who wasn't picking Riki's calls, he picked Yeonjun's after the first ring.

“Hyung-.”

“Sunoo, tell me you're out of the building.”

“Hyung, I need to tell you something-.”

“You won't tell me anything unless it's to inform me you're not there, okay?”.

“Hyung, calm down.”

“I can't calm down, Sunny! Nova Knight won't be able to get to you, okay?” As someone who hid his identity and avoided talking about his superhero alter ego, Yeonjun couldn't help but blurt out the words he was desperately trying to get across through the line. “I’m hurt, I can't fly and I don't care if that asshole decides to destroy the whole world while I'm gone. I need the love of my life to be safe before I can do anything. So please, are you safe?”

Silence was all Yeonjun got, which made his heart sink and his legs run faster. He didn't give a shit about his lung burning out of the need for air or that he could potentially get hurt if he kept running down the streets without looking out for cars and bikes trying to escape DM's antics. He didn't even notice he had practically revealed his secret identity.

All he cared about was getting to his boyfriend before he couldn't save him.

“I'm the love of your life?” Of course Kim Sunoo would only hear what he wanted to hear.

And of course he'd be way too calm to be someone whose home was burning down.

“Yes, you are!” Yeonjun indulged him anyway, being too worried about his safety to scold him for focusing on his stupid confession. “And I'm about to go inside a building on fire to save you if you don't tell me right now that you're safe and-.”

“Sunny wanted a walk.” God bless the heart and weak bladder of that golden retriever puppy they had adopted a few weeks ago. “People's screams and the firefighter truck's siren scared her so we've been staying in the convenience store near the park until things calm down a little.”

Yeonjun felt himself breathing once he heard that.

“That's good, darling, that's amazing. I'll be there in a minute. Please, don't go anywhere.”

“Hyung?”

“Yes, baby?”

“I love you too.”

Despite of the fact that he was jogging in middle of the sidewalk while a bunch of citizens around him ran away to safer places, Yeonjun couldn't help but stop and grin the biggest he's ever done, because he was in love and his boyfriend was the only dork that would tell him he loves him in the middle of a city catastrophe.

“I love you more, darling.”

And he was the only dork to go to his boyfriend instead of saving the entire city.

4.- first big fight

Kyungmin.

That was the name of the asshole that had been terrorizing the city and him for the last couple of years. The one that had made his personal mission to make Yeonjun's life a living hell.

The one that had offered his own boyfriend as bait and made Yeonjun fall inside his trap. The one who sent Sunoo to the rooftop that night so he would make Yeonjun fall in love with him. The one who was using Yeonjun's boyfriend —was it even okay to keep calling Sunoo his?— as a mole to gather information about Nova Knight and the organization he worked in.

At first, Yeonjun couldn't believe it. Both his mentors, Jimin and Taehyung, had called him to their office and sat him down to rip the band-aid off as quickly and nicely as possible. They showed him the evidence; the pictures the organization had found of his boyfriend with Kyungmin and Sunoo's file. He wasn't just DM's boyfriend, he was his sidekick.

Kim Seonwoo: Trickster.

His abilities? Mind-reading, telekinesis, manipulation of people's bodies, mind-control.

He had been in a one year relationship —he had revealed his identity, for the love of God— with someone who could not only influence however he wanted on his decision, but also would know every single thought that went on his mind. Of course, he had been able to get the keys that night at the rooftop, he just needed his hand to motion for them and he'd had them on his palm.

That night, instead of going home to cuddle with his boyfriend, he flew around, wandering among the clouds as he tried to figure out what the hell he was gonna do now that his whole life fell apart.

He ended up on the rooftop, the same one where he had met Sunoo.

They had to move out after the fire, but they still visited the place once in a while after the place got rebuilt. They would bribe the guard and have picnics there until they were kicked out of the building.

He felt so stupid for buying a ring and thinking about proposing to Sunoo on the next picnic. The younger sure had laughed with his actual boyfriend after he heard his thoughts about it. Hell, they probably even got off at the fact that Yeonjun was head over heels for Sunoo while, for the blond guy, everything was just an act. A way to destroy him and the organization.

Yeonjun sat on the edge of the building and sighed. Part of him wanted to forget what he heard that day and just go back to his boyfriend, pretend he didn't know about his true intentions. Keep them alive.

He wouldn't need to get close to Sunoo for him to know that Yeonjun already knew.

The superhero's phone went off and he took it out of his pocket. He was welcomed by a picture of Sunoo and Sunny cuddling on the couch, one he had chosen for his boyfriend's contact photo. God, how do you explain to a golden retriever the concept of betrayal and separation without giving it trauma?

He decided to just get it over with.

“Hey.”

“Hyung, when are you getting home? It's past midnight.” He sounded so worried. He wondered if Kyungmin had ordered and taught him how to be a great actor.

Maybe that was just the way he was.

“Why do you care?”

“What do you mean why do I care?” He could almost see him. His eyebrows furrowing and his confused foxy eyes. It painted Yeonjun's heart that he found him absolutely endearing even after knowing the truth. “You're my boyfriend. I care that you get home safely.”

“Nova Knight can't get hurt that easily.” Unless you're Kim Sunoo, then you're capable of ripping his heart out.

“So what? I'm Choi Yeonjun's boyfriend. Not Nova Knight’s.” He had said that with his whole chest. So sure and so proud to be with loser, bench basketball player, Yeonjun that the superhero felt himself tear up.

Choi thought it made sense for it to hurt that much. It was his first love after all. He had never lost the love of his life before.

“You're right. You aren't Nova Knight's boyfriend. You're Death Master’s.” A gasp came from the other side of the line and then silence ensued. “Aren't you, Sunny? Or should I call you Trickster now?”.

“Hyung…”

“Tell me, Sunno. Can you control my mind through the phone?”

“Hyungie, wait. I can explain.”

“Explain what, Sunoo? That not only you had a boyfriend this whole time, but you were also sent to spy on me? Doesn't that sum it up enough?” In all the time they've been together, Yeonjun had never snapped on the younger like that and he couldn't help but question if it was because he loved him too much or he was influenced not to.

“Hyung, I know it sounds bad, but please, come home and talk to me.”

“Sunoo, I don't think there's a home for me to come back to.”

“Hyung, please…”

As much as it hurt him, Yeonjun ended the call.

+ 1.- sunoo's betrayal

Yeonjun's recklessness was gonna get him killed.

It wasn't a statement. It was a fact. He was in Kyungmin's lair, hiding for his life while the guy looked everywhere for him to shoot him dead. Normally bullets wouldn't have any effect on him, but the guy, considering himself Nova Knight's archenemy, had developed some special bullets filled with Yeonjun's own kryptonite. So yeah, if he were to find him and put a bullet on his head, he'd definitely get him dead.

And, honestly, it would be his fault. His mentors told him to stay away from the guy now that they discovered who the mole was. They specifically ordered him to not fight him without backup. They told him to keep his emotions together and not act out of anger after what he made Sunoo do.

But he wouldn't be Nova Knight if he ever listened. He had already been given an earful after he told them that Sunoo knew his identity. He couldn't bring himself to care about it because he trusted him.

Yeah, that didn't age well.

He was already hurt. One of the bullets had reached him and now he couldn't run without him losing lots of blood on one side of his waist and his right leg. That was it. There it ended his pathetic legacy as a superhero. The most useless of them all.

“Yah!” The door of the closet he had been hiding in swung open and there was Sunoo. Trickster on his suit. If he wasn't on the verge of panicking after being found or completely mad at the blond guy in front of him, he would even believe he looked hot wearing it. “You can think anything you want about me. Wanna think that I'm a liar? Okay. That I'm a horrible person? Sure. But if you insult my boyfriend and call yourself useless one more time, I'm shooting a bullet on the other leg.”

Yeonjun didn't understand. Was he threatening to kill him or saving him? Because now that he knew he was a villain, he didn't know whether to be afraid of him or not.

“I'm doing both if you don't stop being mean to yourself.” The younger rolled his eyes. Right, he could hear his thoughts. “Now get out of there.”

Normally, he wouldn't do anything a villain said, but he was in no position to resist now that he was found injured.

That sight that he caught the moment he crawled out of the closet amused him. Kyungmin, the Death Master guy that had been making the city shiver in fear, was tying himself inside a spaceship with a smile on his face; though, not because he was grinning ear to ear it meant it was genuine. His whole body was trembling and his smile looked strained, like something was forcing him to keep the facade up.

Or someone.

“You son of a bitch, I can't you're really doing this to me.” At first, Yeonjun thought he was talking to him, but then he saw Sunoo's hand moving up, fist clenching as he was holding onto something. A choked moan followed instantly and he didn't have to be a genius to know what was happening.

Sunoo was controlling Kyungmin and, right now, choking him. He wasn't trying to kill him. It was a warning and a punishment for speaking to them when he wasn't asked.

“Did hyung allow you to do anything but getting yourself ready, Min?” It was kind of scary to hear Sunoo's sweet voice while watching him use his powers.

“No, hyung.” Kyungmin barely responded, his voice being muffled by the pressure on his throat.

“Good.” Kim let him go, but didn't stop his control over him since the guy went immediately to getting comfortable on the spaceship before Sunoo used his hand to motion the door closed. “Now, tell your parents I'm not coming back and if they dare to send someone to find me, to remind themselves how deadly my powers can be, okay? Toodles!”

If you were to ask Yeonjun, he would state that everything that just happened was a weird fever dream he was having due to the blood loss. He was making up a scenario where his lovely boyfriend got rid of his greatest enemy to save him and then shipped him out into space, because there was no way he literally saw Kyungmin exiting the earth through an open gate on his lair's ceiling to get lost into the sky. It sounded too good to be real.

However, the image of Sunoo's shoulder dropping in relief and the heavy sigh he let out were pretty much there. It wasn't a dream.

Kim looked down to where he was.

“Oh, God. I need to get you back to the organization or you won't make it. He made an antidote for the poison in the bullets. I'll go get it.” he tried to do as he said, but a hand grabbing his wrist softly caught him off guard. Yeonjun kept him in place. “Hyung, you need to be treated now. Wait here while I get it.”

“What just happened?”

“I sent him back to his planet.” The younger shrugged. Something similar to pain flashed through his eyes. “Where he was born and I was created to be his. That's why I have powers and he doesn't. Nobody wanted his crazy ass so they made me to be his companion.”

“His boyfriend?”

“His husband.” Well, that didn't make it any better. “They maded me to be as spiteful as him and served him on whatever he wanted, hence why my powers are so useful for the wrong purposes. I couldn't really feel anything or do much that wasn't related to his orders until… he sent me to you. He wanted me to trick you into loving me, but I fell for you instead. I have never felt love before so I didn't know if it was a good idea to tell you about all this or not. I figured that I could protect you better if I played along without actually giving him accurate information.”

Sunoo didn't know that —because the superhero was forcing himself to keep his mind blank—, but Yeonjun was doing everything he could to not fold after hearing his confession.

“So…” God knows Choi needed to gulp to get his throat a bit wet or his voice would come out as a squeak. “Are you like a threat to the city and the organization in a villainous way? I mean, you said it yourself, your powers are deadly.”

Sunoo wrinkled his nose so cutely that Yeonjun almost forgot he was the same guy that controlled the most dangerous person in the city into smiling his way out of the planet.

“Well, are my morals the best? No. Do I care about humans? Also no. Would I use my powers on them or anyone to get my way? Absolutely, sometimes a boy needs to skip the line to buy mintchoco ice cream in a hurry. But would I hurt them just because I can? Not really. If they don't fuck with me, I don't fuck with anyone.”

“What about me?” Yeonjun couldn't help but ask. “Have you ever used them on me?”

Sunoo sighed, but also looked at him with those doe eyes that always stared back at Yeonjun on the lazy mornings during the weekends that they got to stay cuddling in bed. The same eyes that said “I love you” better than his lips ever could.

“Hyung, if I ever considered using them against you, I would've made you come back home the moment you confronted me through the phone.” Yeonjun knew he shouldn't, but no one could stop him from feeling relieved. That Sunoo loved him and that not everything was a lie. “Now, can you please let me go find that damn antidote so you can get treated?”

“Forget about taking me to the organization, just take me home after you find it.”

“Hyung, even if you start healing again after the antidote, you'll need to get the bullets out.” Sunoo scolded him, which drew a dopey smile on Yeonjun's face.

“I'm sure you can get them out with your powers.”

“Yeah, I can, but it's gonna hurt like hell.”

“Nah, I can handle it.” The superhero bragged with a smug smirk. “Your boyfriend is Nova Knight after all.”

Despite being one second away from a breakdown due to his concern for the older, the blond guy chuckled, kneeling down while his head shook in disapproval. One of his hands gently caressed the superhero's black hair while the other cupped his cheek. Yeonjun leaned in spite of the pain he was feeling to press a chaste kiss on the younger's lips, which led him to receive another, a soft and a bit longer, kiss in response.

Yeonjun would kiss the fuck out of him once his life was out of danger.

“I already told you. I'm Choi Yeonjun's boyfriend, not yours, Nova Knight.” He said before carrying the older bridal style. Yeonjun didn't know he was strong enough to do that, since Sunoo was the same guy that struggled —maybe even fake struggled— to open jam jars, but he was pleased to save that information for another, more special, occasion. “I'm just grabbing that antidote and taking you home because you asked nicely. Not because I love you or anything.”

“Sure you don't, darling.”
