It was official: the weekly scavenger hunt was on! Most activities planned by Weslie were fun and simple, not usually giving much of a challenge to the campers. However, this week's game was awfully difficult for Bobbie and Cici. What in the hell is a “chanterelle”? What does that even look like?! Weslie didn’t explain anything, and they were stumped!
The two girls sat on a large, fallen log, side by side, focusing on the paper before them. Golden mushrooms could be found scattered about in their area. Large coniferous trees formed an opening above them, allowing the sunlight to shine through. And with the light breeze and sun warming them up, it was the perfect weather to be thrown into a game they had no chance of winning.
Bobbies bright eyes trained on the list of items in total confusion. They were halfway done with the list, and yet they couldn’t find this one thing! “Did Wes do this on purpose, or are we just stupid?”
“Hey, if anyone here’s stupid, it’s not me,” Cici snarkily replied. “Are you sure you don’t know what that word means?”
“Are you sure you don’t know what it means? I thought you were supposed to be smart, Ms. ‘I’m Getting A Medical Degree.’ Guess I thought wrong,” she snickered in return.
Cici scoffed. “It’s a medical degree, not a…whatever-this-thing-is degree. You act like I need to know everything! God.”
In complete honesty, Cici did, in fact, know what a chanterelle was; they were the golden mushrooms growing among them. She just didn’t want Bobbie to find out. She just found it oh so amusing that she was so challenged by this simple task…
The bobtail stood up from her spot on the wood and stretched, raising her arms in the air. “I guess we’re stupid, then,” she grinned, closing her eyes as she allowed the sun to soak in her fur.
As Bobbie pulled her limbs, Cici couldn’t help but stare in awe at the cat. She wasn’t wearing her jacket like she usually would. Instead, she had slipped on a white tank top, along with her typical shorts. Did she always have that on underneath? Cici was awfully curious, but she never bothered to ask.
It flustered Cici a bit. Seeing Bobbie so…she wouldn’t be able to find the word. Comfortable, perhaps? Her glare only lingered, longer and longer. Her sharp eyes ventured everywhere, from her paws, to her arms, down to her legs and up to her…well, she’d be damned if she were to admit that. She never got to look at her this much… She wanted to take her all in, if only for just a moment, because she knew Bobbie would never see–
“Cici?”
Fuck, she lingered for too long! She saw, she saw! She needed an excuse, and quick!
“Cici, is something the matter?”
Flat and fast, Cici muttered, “Mosquito on you.”
“What?! I didn’t even feel it! Why didn’t you tell me?!” Bobbie craned her neck to check her arms, her back, everywhere, yet she didn’t find a single bug anywhere! Maybe it flew off?
“Well, now I probably have a bite somewhere and we can’t find the next item. Thanks a lot, Cici!” Bobbie mewed sarcastically.
Cici seemed to have struck a nerve there… Well, she believed her little distraction! And maybe she can let her little secret slip while she's at it…
“Hey, Bobbie.”
“Yeah, what is it?”
Cici pointed at one of the mushrooms in the cats direction. “That’s a chanterelle, by the way.”
Bobbie stared at the other girl in disbelief. “Are you serious right now? You knew this whole time?!”
Cici giggled maliciously behind her paw, trying her best to keep her composure. She fell for that one too! She was on a roll today!
Bobbie noticed her hidden smile and grinned back. Oh, she was just messing with her, that was it! She promptly sat back down beside her partner and elbowed her playfully. She snorted, chuckling between her words, “You’re so stupid!”
“Says you, idiot!” The two burst into harmonious laughter together, shoving and elbowing one another, and neither of them could help staring at the other. They didn’t avert their gazes, they didn’t stop looking– not until somebody remembered what they were really here for.
“Hey, we need to check off the item now, right?” Bobbie grabbed her pencil and marked an X in the box beside “chanterelle”.
Finally, they found what they were looking for, in more ways than one.
