Bradley and Max are spending their first holiday together with Bradley's family at Uppercrust Manor for their big Halloween party. And when the lights come back on there's something new and something missing. One guest has a new knife wound in their arm, and another guest's priceless antique necklace is missing! The party is locked down and no one is allowed to leave on the orders of Detective Bonkers D. Bobcat who puts himself in charge of solving the case. But he's a little bit...well, bonkers. Work Text:

Ah, Halloween. Costumes, creeps and candy! All of the things you could ever want for the holiday of frightful delights. And students and faculty at Welig University were in full preparation for holiday. All sorts of cobweb hangings, LED witches on the lamp posts, ghostly window decorations and public candy bowls left and right was well as fliers with local parties on campus being announced to bring in attendees. Many students and professors were even walking around in costume already. Some in simple masks – others in full body outfits and makeup. Suffice to say the people at Welig definitely had the Halloween spirit.

But for Max Goof, he had very special plans for Halloween. The day before his boyfriend Bradley Uppercrust the 3rd told him that his parents are holding the annual Uppercrust Hallows Eve Gala at the manor house here in their home state. They only hold it there once every two years. And Bradley usually goes after the event is over to spend time alone with his family or comes in a simple mask and tuxedo to mingle with the guests for a little while. But this time he wants to go all out. This time is different. This time he's going to bring his beloved Max and introduce him to his family. When he told his parents about his intentions they were elated and happily allowed their son to bring along his plus one. They were even gracious enough to arrange for Bradley and Max's costumes. And after the party Bradley arranged for him and Max to have a nice hotel room to close out the witching hour and spend the rest of the weekend at. It was everything a young man could ask for, really. Spending your second favorite holiday with your boyfriend and getting to meet his family. He could hardly contain his excitement as he packed, practically bouncing like a rabbit as he went from his dresser to grab his clothes and other necessities and back to his share of the bunk bed to place them in his duffle back.

“Wow, Max. I haven't seen you this happy since you were on stage with Powerline.” P.J. said with an amused smile as he looked up from his book of Edgar Allen Poe to watch his best friend.

“How can he not be excited, Peej? Our boy Max is gonna rub elbows with the ritzy people.” Bobby said as he did rock the baby with his yo-yo.

“It's not just that, Bobby. This will be me and Brad's first holiday together. And I'll be seeing his family on top of that. Two major steps in a relationship in one night! Of course I'm excited.” Max said with a big smile as he hugged the pair of jeans he grabbed.

“Well I can't say I blame you. Vicky and I actually have something of a romantic evening for Halloween planned, too. We're going to go on a haunted bus tour in town, and then we're going to the drive-in theater. It's slasher couple's night.” P.J. explained.

“Sounds like a horrifically righteous time, brother! As for yours truly – I'll be acting as the connoisseur for all of the spreads at every party on campus. Every punch bowl, candy jar, cookie plate, sandwich platter and so on will be judged by moi. As I have trained my taste buds during my formative years to grow accustomed to a variety of food groups, the hosts of these parties felt that I was the best choice to ensure that their spreads are of the best quality for the guests.” Bobby said.

“What a noble sacrifice for you and your thighs to make, Bobby.” Max said with a sarcastic smile to which the terrier mix grinned and sighed dramatically as he put the back of his hand to his forehead.

“If not I, Maximilian, then who? Besides – I'll be killing calories from each sampling walking to the different parties. So I get free food and get in my steps. Double win, far as I'm concerned. To say nothing of the many different female specimens I get to mingle with.” Bobby said.

“Obviously. Well I hope you guys have fun. It's gonna be weird not spending Halloween with you guys for once.” Max said as the trio gathered around each other.

“Yeah, it is pretty surreal. I don't really remember a holiday we spent apart from each other on purpose. But that just means we have to plan something big to make up for it when we all come back here.” P.J. stated with an optimistic smile.

“Absolutely! Like a giant chocolate fountain with different flavors of chocolate and one hundred pounds worth of different foods to dunk in it!” Bobby eagerly suggested.

“Ha, ha! That's one idea for sure, Bobby boy.” The Labradoodle said with laugh while P.J. just shook his head in amusement, then the young men all shared a group hug.

Meanwhile, at the Gamma House, Bradley was meticulously going over his luggage for the trip. This would not only be his first time bringing someone actually important to see his entire family, but this would also be his first weekend away with someone important. He had to ensure that he had everything he needed. Of course – his Gamma brothers made sure to get in their editorial comments during Bradley's preparations.

“Sheesh, Bradley, did'ja pack ten wardrobes worth of clothes or what?” Tank asked as he looked at the six suitcases lined up next to the doorway in astonishment.

“Oh Tank, don't be ridiculous. Max and I will only be gone for the weekend. I only packed one wardrobe. The other nine are still here, thank you very much.” Bradley proudly corrected.

Not something to brag about, achoo!” Shades said quickly under a fake sneeze, making a show of rubbing his nose which made the rest of the main Gammas laugh while Bradley glared at him. “Whoa, excuse me boss. I must be coming down with something.”

“Yes. That would be a pity, Shades. Perhaps I should contact the campus nurse and see if you're up to date with all of your shots.” Bradley said with a malicious grin, knowing full well the bull terrier had a fear of needles. And true to form Shades gave a whimper of fear as he cowered in the corner of the couch, hiding under the cushions.

“Low blow, Bradley! Ya gotta be nice to us – or we'll tell the Consort!” Kevin stated and the rest of the Gammas spoke up in agreement.

“And what good will that do? He's not even a member of the fraternity.” Bradley pointed out.

“No, but we know that Max would go give you a look that could give the devil frostbite if we told him you were picking on us. Since he's just a sweet little Goof who looks out for everyone and all.” Boris said with a knowing smirk.

“And besides, Gamma or no Gamma, the universal rule applies to him. If the spouse ain't happy, you ain't happy.” Federico stated with a profound expression which made the rest of the Gammas nod in agreement.

“Tch! Whatever.” Bradley muttered, but he knew his friends were right. Max definitely had him at his beck and call even if he didn't realize it. And while he was normally a pillar of confidence the Saluki would crumble like a stack of toy building blocks if Max leveled him with, as his friends have fearfully dubbed it, his 'dad face' if he caught Bradley acting out of turn. “Anyway! What are you gentlemen going to do while I'm away? Hold down the fort here, or gallivant out in the city?”

Slouch made a triumphant grunt, puffing out his chest proudly.

“That's right! Slouch really scored big and got us all ring side seats for this epic fight happening in Vegas this weekend. If all goes well, we'll be coming back with a prize purse of our own. Especially when we double it after we hit the casinos.” Kevin said with a wide grin and dollar signs in his eyes.

Just don't let Federico anywhere near a poker table. We don't need a repeat of what happened last time in that card game in Memphis.” Bradley said as he looked in the mirror in the foyer, combing his hair for the thirtieth time to make sure it was perfect.

“Whaddya talkin' about, huh?! Those charges were dropped, Bradley!” Federico stated.

“Also not something to brag about.” Shades said in a deadpan tone, popping out from under the couch cushions.

“Shut up and get back under your pillows!” The shortest Gamma snapped back Shades who shrugged in a 'just saying' manner.

Bradley shook his head in amusement. He was going to miss the antics of his fraternity brothers. It kind of made him sad, not spending a holiday with them. Usually they'd host a big party and have monster themed keg stands as the highlight event for Halloween. It almost made him consider staying...

“Oh hey, look. I think I see the Consort coming down the sidewalk.” Boris said, taking out his toothpick to point out the window. And indeed – there was Max Goof himself making his way down the sidewalk to the Gamma House.

...And after some careful consideration Bradley has decided that absence makes the heart grow fonder. He'll take Tank and the guys to that club the House of Mouse as a way to make up for it.

“Well boys, it's been fun! I'll see you next week! Don't wait up if you get here before me!” Bradley stated and took out his Nokia 3310 to speed dial a certain number. After one ring the person on the other line picked up immediately. “Alfonso? He's arrived – and we're both ready to go. ….You're on the way? Wonderful! We'll see you in a bit. Ta!”

“Wow, Bradley. The butler is picking you two up? You're really pulling out all the stops.” The large bulldog said with an impressed whistle.

“How can I not? After all of the awful things that I've done in the past, Tank, I want to sweep Max off his feet. I want to make him feel as special as he makes me feel loved, like I actually deserve this second chance. To show my gratitude and to make sure that Max knows how serious I am. That I won't take this relationship for granted. Won't take him for granted. That I'm going to love him with all of my heart and...” Bradley, who was pacing about in the foyer and making various hand gestures to emphasize his feelings, suddenly paused in his passionate speech when he saw Tank and the rest of the guys looking at him with huge grins. Or rather looking behind him with huge grins. “...he's standing right behind me, isn't he?”

“Don't let that stop you, Brad. Go on. I'm genuinely flattered.” Max said with a sincere smile. Bradley winced in embarrassment at first, then smirked mischievously as he whipped around and wrapped his arms around Max's waist and picked him up.

“Didn't you learn about knocking from Father Goof, Maximilian?” Bradley asked, looking up to Max as he held him up.

“Father Goof? You call my dad that like he's your father-in-law.” Max said with a grin.

“Why not? You're coming to my childhood manor house to meet my family, and on a holiday no less. I'd say we're practically engaged already.” Bradley said, his smirk turning into a fond expression.

“Hold your horses, cowboy. We have to have a holiday with my family next before we start talking about nuptials.” Max teased, but his face likewise turned into a look that held an equal amount of fondness for his boyfriend as he leaned down to touch his forehead to Bradley's. It was definitely a sweet moment.

But naturally, the Gammas had to take it upon themselves to interrupt the moment with over-exaggerated kissing sounds. This made the couple look towards the fraternity brothers to see Tank, Boris, Shades and Kevin kissing the air while Slouch and Federico were imitating playing violins and humming romantic tunes. Max chuckled at the display while Bradley rolled his eyes and sat the younger man down.

“Yeah, I know Slouch. And you and Federico never had a lesson in your lives.” Bradley said to the tallest Gamma.

Slouch merely chuckled as he held up his hands in a show of peace.

“I just wanted to say goodbye to you guys as well before me and Brad left. I hope you guys will have a fun Halloween yourselves.” Max said.

“Oh, don't worry about us sweetheart. We got a fight in Las Vegas to see – and that'll be our treat. As far as tricks go? Well there's plenty of burlesque shows to attend, if ya know what I mean.” Tank said with a suggestive wiggle of his eyebrows.

“Course he doesn't, Tank. You ought to know Maxie is a one-hound dude. Besides, he's more likely to give Bradley that kinda show himself.” Kevin said which had all of the Gammas bursting out laughing.

Bradley and Max blushed cherry red at the implication, looked at each other in embarrassment and while Max looked away with a shy smile Bradley started to pull up his sleeves and menacingly walk towards his friends until he heard a car horn honking followed by a familiar voice calling out.

Maestro Bradley! Are you there?” Called a voice that the senior has known since he was a young pup. Bradley looked out the open door to see the front of a black stretch limousine and sighed in relief then turned to glare at his laughing fraternity brothers.

“You jerks got a lucky break this time. When I get back, I'm going to put you all through the most brutal training session of your lives.” Bradley stated.

“Worth it.” The Gammas all said with smug grins.

“Don't be too hard on them, Brad. They're just teasing. You guys have fun in Vegas. And drive safe.” Max said with a smile as he waved to Tank and the others.

“We will! Goodbye, Max!” The Gammas exclaimed with much happier tones as they waved to the Labradoodle.

“Hmph. You're far too nice to them sometimes.” Bradley said as they walked out the door and down the stairs.

“You can never be too nice to people, Brad. If that were true...” Max paused and reached up to kiss the Saluki's cheek quickly then moved away to smile at him. “...we wouldn't be together.”

Bradley stopped on the last step at the kiss and his face broke out in a smile as he reached up to touch his cheek where Max had kissed him.

“Well, I suppose there's some kernel of truth in that...” Bradley trailed off dreamily.

At this a new voice chuckled.

“My, my. I never thought I'd see the day where Maestro Bradley would be so openly head over-heels.” Said a new, accented voice.

Bradley and Max turned to the voice and were met by a male Xoloitzcuintli in his early fifties. He was rather tall and had a lean muscular build that was similar to a swimmer's physique. And he was dressed in a black tuxedo that practically matched the limousine. Max figured that this was the Alfonso that Bradley had told him about.

“Alfonso, my good man. Timely arrival as always.” Bradley said as he walked over and gave Alfonso a hug.

“Idle hands do the devil's work, Maestro Bradley. Now – may I presume that this charming young man is the Max Goof that you've practically written sonnets about?” Alfonso asked with a half sincere, half sarcastic smile as he looked to Max before he gave a bow. “Alfonso Del Bosque. A pleasure to finally put a face to the name.”

“Hey, I didn't talk that much about him!” Bradley stated with an embarrassed glare which made the freshman chuckle as he walked over and shook the butler's hand.

“That's me. Nice to meet you, Alfonso. It's pretty neat to meet someone who's known Bradley since he was a kid. Level with me; was he always a smug little hotshot?” Max asked.

“Emphasis on hot, thank you.” Bradley added in as he flipped his hair.

Venga, sí. I could tell you stories, Maestro Max. So I hope you packed yourself some snacks for the trip to Uppercrust Manor. Now then; allow me to take your luggage and load it into the trunk.” Alfonso said, holding out his hands.

“Well if you want – but it's just the one bag. I can just hold it myself.” Max said as he held out the duffle bag he had slung over his shoulder.

Bradley and Alfonso both blinked a few times, looking at Max's singular bag in astonishment. Then they looked at each other in disbelief. Bradley then went over to Max and searched him over.

“You seriously didn't bring any other bags with you?” Bradley asked in confusion as he circled around Max's person, as if he would find an extra hidden bag on him.

“No? We're just going to be gone for the weekend. I packed a few days' worth of clothes and the essentials like a toothbrush and things like that. Everything that fits in a duffle bag.” Max said with a smile, proud of himself for being so practical in his packing.

Bradley stopped circling Max to stare at his smiling face with a look of heartbreak, like he had just learned some horrible truth. He then took Max into his arms in a tender hug and stroked his hair.

“I'm so, so sorry my darling macaron. I didn't know it was this bad. We are so going shopping later this month. Alfonso.” Bradley said in signal to his butler as he handed Max's bag off to him.

“I'll call all of your favorite tailors and let them know to make a day for you both, Maestro Bradley.” Alfonso said with a bow to the Saluki as he took the bag then went off to the Gamma House to get Bradley's own luggage.

“You are so dramatic! The clothes I have are just fine, so there's no need to go out shopping at a tailor. And what's with macaron?” Max questioned as he shook off Bradley.

“If you can fit a weekend's worth of clothes in a duffle bag, Max, you definitely need to go shopping. And the tailor's is just the first of many places where I'll be taking you. As for macaron, well you are a Labradoodle. I had to call you something instead of freshman now that we're dating. Since macarons are a French dessert and you're part poodle, it seemed like a given.” Bradley explained. Max thought about it for a moment before smiling.

“Alright, that sounds fair...dreamboat.” Max said, whispering the last part out in a husky tone as he bumped his hip against Bradley's and walked over to the passenger end of the limousine and leaving his boyfriend with a face flushed hot with desire.

“Ready to go, Maestro Bradley?” Alfonso asked as he walked towards Bradley, skillfully carrying all six of his suitcases plus Max's one duffle bag. The Saluki didn't answer at first before he wordlessly pulled out his wallet and took out eight one-hundred-dollar bills and stuffed them into Alfonso's front suit pocket.

“Turn the music up and close the back windows. You didn't see or hear anything.” Bradley said before he ran after Max and scooped him into his arms, kissing the back of his neck as he did so.

“Young maestro, please don't make a mess!” The older dog pleaded.

“I'll try my best!” Bradley called back as he hurriedly opened the back of the limousine and dived inside with Max who was giggling and halfheartedly protesting his boyfriend's amorous attack before the car door was closed.

“Ah, young love. It'd be more touching if I didn't just have limousine detailed.” Alfonso said with an amused shake of his head as he went to load up the bags in the trunk – then made his way to the driver's side and drove off.

And so began the couple's journey to Uppercrust Manor for their first holiday together. As Max and Bradley cuddled and cooed in the backseat, they were eagerly awaiting what was sure to be an unforgettable night of fun. Unbeknownst to the couple, though, their special evening was set to unravel a whole definition of the word 'fun'. Making it all the more unforgettable...

The drive to Uppercrust Manor was actually not as long as Max thought it would be, but it went down a path that he didn't expect it. He thought that Bradley's childhood home would be in the city in some gated area. Imagine his surprise as the limo drove through the city and headed towards the scenic countryside. Bradley explained that when his family moved from England to the states when he was a kid his grandfather chose the countryside because it reminded him of the lush green hills he grew up near and it had wildflowers similar to the ones his late wife, Bradley's beloved grandmum Abigail Uppercrust, adored so much. And so the Uppercrust Manor was carefully imported from England brick by brick and rebuilt here in the USA. Max found the reasoning sweet and was even more excited to see the place with his own eyes. But then a pang of worry struck him as he looked to his boyfriend.

“Do you think they'll like me?” Max asked.

“What do you mean?” Bradley asked back.

“Your family. I mean – this will be my first time meeting them. My first time coming to their house. Hell, it's not even a house. It's a manor imported all the way from England. And me? I'm just Max Goof. An average college skater. It's not like I got a lot on the ball.” Max replied, looking down at his boots and now suddenly feeling very insecure about them. While they were plain winter boots what if they were too scuffed or too out of style for the liking of Bradley's family? What if his light green sweater and dark blue jeans were too homely and he didn't have time to change? Maybe he should take up Bradley's offer to go and meet his favorite tailors.

“Max. Look at me.” Bradley's voice said. But he didn't sound angry. He sounded patient and understanding.

The Labradoodle did as his boyfriend said and looked into his baby blue eyes. Bradley was giving him a small smile, but it held so much confidence and like it had all the answers in the world. He then reached his hands up and carefully cupped Max's cheeks. The touch surprised the younger man but he immediately melted into the warm hands, closing his eyes in contentment. But the gentleness was soon replaced by sharp pinches as Bradley suddenly pulled at his cheeks. Max squawked in surprise and swatted Bradley's hands away from his face and glared at him.

“Hey! What the heck was that for, Brad!?” Max asked in annoyance.

To make sure that you're the real Max Goof, and that no doppelganger aliens pulled a fast one on me. Max would never worry about what other people think of him.” Bradley stated with crossed his arms and a pointed look.

“Oh. Well, I mean, yeah. I don't care what other people think. But your family aren't other people. They're folks you care about. And I want to make a good impression. So of course, I'm worried that I won't.” Max said as he shrugged awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. Bradley's expression softened at this and he took Max's free hand which made him look at the Saluki.

“Max, your consideration for others is very admirable. But I fear that you take it to your detriment at times. I also care about you. Something that I have expressed candidly to my family. And since you brought up making good impressions, they're actually concerned about making one with you. Especially my parents.” Bradley explained.

“Seriously?” Max asked in surprise.

“Uh huh. It was all I could do to keep mother from buying every sports magazine she could get a hold of. When I told her that I wanted to bring you to this party she spent weeks leading up to today researching everything she could about skating. And recently she had the clothing brand she owns get to work on a new line of sports gear for skaters. It's her way of showing support in what brought you and I together.” Bradley replied.

“Wow. What about the rest of your family?” Max asked further.

“Ha! They were just as eager. Father, ever the man about town, has already arranged to stay in Spoonerville for a week so that he can get a feel of the place and is talking about expanding a small office there. And when I told my sister and grandfather about your culinary arts major and predilection for music – they made sure to hire the best caterers to serve the party and a top tier band for tonight's entertainment.” Bradley explained.

With every word of his explanations, Max's prior worries melted away. And the anxious expression in his face turned into one of hope. Letting out a relieved sigh Max laid his other hand on Bradley's knee.

“I guess I was worried over nothing.” The younger man admitted.

“You were. Luckily for you that's why I'm here.” Bradley said with a smile as he took Max's other hand.

“Bradley Uppercrust the 3rd, if you say that you'll do the worrying for both of us...” Max trailed off in a warning tone.

“No, Max. I wouldn't dare try to think for you. I was going to say that's why I'm here; to remind you that you do, in fact, have a lot more on the ball than you give yourself credit for my little macaron.” Bradley said as he raised one of Max's hands to his lips and kissed his knuckles while giving a loving wink.

Max blushed at the gesture and smiled widely while his loppy ears covered his eyes in embarrassment.

“Jeeze, Brad! You can't just talk like some fairy tale prince and expect a guy to be all nonchalant about it!” Max exclaimed. Bradley chuckled and kissed Max's forehead.

“If it keeps you from thinking such nonsensical things, you can just call me Prince Charming.” Bradley said with a grin as he took Max into his arm and hugged him close.

“Pfft! Yeah right. Dreamboat is the only pet name you'll get out of me, and you'll like it.” Max stated with a grin of his own as he hugged his boyfriend back.

“Heh, heh. I can live with that.” The Saluki chuckled as he nuzzled his face into the top of Max's hair, surprised at how soft the mess of raven locks actually were. Suddenly the back of the limousine was opened up and the couple looked to see Alfonso smiling at them.

“Sorry to interrupt, young maestros, but we've finally arrived.” Alfonso said as he stepped aside so that the couple could walk out of the car.

“Ready?” Bradley asked Max as he pulled away slightly, only holding one hand in a show of support. Max breathed, breathed out and then looked at his boyfriend before giving a confident nod.

“Yeah. I'm ready.” Max replied.

The pair stepped out of the limousine together and the first thing the freshman saw was a freshly manicured, luscious green lawn on either side of a granite driveway. The second thing to that caught his eye was the slate path to the left that led to a gilded gate with a rose arch to the backyard. Max could only imagine that likely led into what was sure to be a grandiose garden. And the final thing he marveled at was stately Uppercrust Manor itself. The manor was incredibly large – the front alone stretching at thirty yards in width. And the height was equally impressive. It wasn't dizzying exactly but it was proud and stood firm. It definitely lived true to the family name of Uppercrust. The architecture overall wasn't like any of the buildings from the city they drove past, either. Which further confirmed what Bradley said about how his family had the manor house imported from their native England and brought to here. Not that Max thought he was lying, but damn. Talk about attention to detail.

“Welcome to Uppercrust Manor, Maestro Max.” Alfonso said as he bowed to the couple.

“What do you think?” Bradley asked to his boyfriend.

“I think I'm in over my head, but that's never stopped me before.” Max said with a nervous smile.

“Now that's the Max that I know. Come on!” Bradley said excited as he led Max to the front door, pulling him by the hand as they ran ahead while Alfonso tended to the luggage.

The young men walked down the granite driveway, and Max took a moment to take in more of the surrounding space. He saw that the driveway led off to another path towards the right that had a sizable garage. How many cars were in there now, he wondered? What kinds of cars did they have? He knew Bradley had that cherry red Porsche 911, but he must have at least one other car. The senior came off as the type who would have the same model of car as the spy from that novel series, and he'd probably have it tricked out with all of the gadgets too. Once the pair walked up the medium sized stone steps leading up to the large oak wood doors, Bradley rang the doorbell. In no time at all a Beagle maid just a little older than them opened the doors.

“Master Bradley – so good to see you home again.” The young woman greeted with a bow.

“Hello, Marie. It's nice to be home. Where is my family? I finally brought Max with me.” Bradley said, pulling Max close to him with a smile.

“Hello.” Max said with a bit an awkward wave.

At this, Marie's eyes bulged in surprise before she gasped and then smiled widely as she gave a deep bow.

“M-Master Maximilian! Y-Yes, hello! It's so wonderful to meet you in person!” Marie exclaimed, then she shot up from her bow to address Bradley. “Ah yes! Your family, Master Bradley! Lady Eloise is practicing her golfing in the backyard. Master Bradman and Master Lee are having a round of chess in the library and Lady Mercedes is practicing her harp.”

“Thank you, Marie. Could you please let them know that Max and I will be waiting in the drawing room when they're ready to meet with us?” Bradley asked.

“At once, sir. And it's a pleasure again to meet you, Master Maximilian.” Marie said, bowing again to Max.

“Oh please, it's just Max. No need to roll out the red carpet for me. I'm just an average Joe, heh.” Said the Labradoodle with an awkward chuckle. “But thank you anyway, Miss Marie. You're very polite.”

The maid looked at Max in astonishment for a moment. At first Max was concerned he had offended her, until her face broke out into a wide smile and she giggled.

“Thank you for your kind words, Max. Do come in, gentlemen.” Marie said as she stepped aside to let both college students in, and also Alfonso who had caught up to them by now with the luggage on a dolly.

Upon walking into the very large foyer Max was greeting by even more breathtaking architecture and décor. Glass vases, stone statues of varying shapes, a nice grandfather clock and several potted plants lined the walls to fill in the space. The floor and ceiling were marble while the walls were cherry wood. And lining the reddish-brown wood walls were various framed pictures. Both valuable paintings made by many famous artists long since passed and darling family portraits of Bradley and his family. There were even individual portraits of what Max assumed were his parents, grandfather and younger sister. They were also intimidating yet also dazzling people in pastels. And very soon he's going to meet them in the flesh...

“No need to be nervous, Max.” Bradley whispered to Max as they made their way to the drawing room.

“Nervous? Who's nervous?” Max asked back in a whisper.

“Given the fact that you're squeezing my hand hard enough to break it and I can hear your heartbeat, I think it's a safe bet to assume it's you.” The slightly older man replied with a deadpan expression as he looked down at his hand, which Max was holding in a vice grip.

“S-Sorry!” Max exclaimed in apology as he let go of Bradley's hand immediately and settled for grabbing the hemline of his sweater in a similar grip. “I'm sorry...”

“Don't tell me that you're worried you'll make a bad impression again.” Bradley said as they sat down together on the love seat in the drawing room.

“Not so much that. Just worried about being frozen in place and not able to say anything when they all come here. I mean just looking at the pictures, all of your family looks so amazing. They probably carry themselves like royalty in person. I just don't want to trip over my words too much.” Max said with an awkward smile.

“Ha. Funny you should say 'trip'. Max, there's something about my father specifically that I should tell you about. You know how your father is...er, well, uh...” Bradley tried to find the right word as not to insult his boyfriend or his father.

“Clumsy, Brad. You can say it. He's clumsy. He knows it, I know it, our family knows it, our friends know it and our insurance company definitely knows it.” Max said with an assuring smile which allowed the Saluki to let out a relieved sigh.

“Oh thank God! I was worried that was the elephant in the room! No offense, Henrietta.” Bradley said to the middle-aged elephant maid who was setting up cobweb decorations for the party that was to happen later that evening.

“None taken, Master Bradley!” Henrietta cheerily replied up from where she stood on the ladder as she continued setting up decorations.

“Anyway, yeah. While Father Goof is clumsy in own right, he at least has a realization of it. My father is danger prone as all Hell and doesn't even know it.” Bradley stated.

“How danger prone are we talking?” Max asked curiously.

“There have been instances, very recently even, where father has actively walked into oncoming traffic while reading the newspaper and was totally oblivious to cars speeding past him and drivers honking their horns and shouting obscenities his way.” Bradley replied with a faraway stare into the wall.

“What!?” Max asked in shock.

“Or the time where he was helping my younger sister bake grandfather a cake for his birthday last year. He got the idea to do the knife tricks he sees the professional chefs do on cooking shows...with no prior training of his own.” Bradley replied as he slowly turned to look at Max with an expression of dread.

“Oh...no.” Max trailed off, feeling a certain sickness in his stomach as he's been a part of similar incidents in the home economics class back at Welig with students who played around with the Ginsu knives. He and Professor Isaac have had to call the campus nurse and even emergency services more times than he'd like to count.

“Yeah. By the grace of God, he walked away with all of his fingers and only needed stitches. But after that, my sister made him sign a contract with a notary and an official witness to never help her in the kitchen again. I have a copy of the contract if you don't believe me.” The senior said.

“No, I believe you. But he doesn't realize that he's clumsy himself?” Max asked.

“Not a bit! Mother has had every doctor in the state and some doctors out of state look at him. He's mentally sound, and highly intelligent when it comes down to book smarts. My father has taken Uppercrust Shipping to new heights with his business savvy. But spatial awareness? Well...nobody's perfect, I'll just say.” Bradley explained, ending his sentence with an awkward laugh.

Max blinked in surprise before he laughed along with Bradley. The idea that the posh father of his posh boyfriend was a danger-prone mess who made his own klutz of a dad look graceful by comparison was funny, and did help to put him at ease. Just then the Beagle maid from earlier, Marie, came into the room and bowed to the couple as she smiled.

“Pardon me, young sirs. I had to gather up everyone. Presenting Master Bradman, Master Lee, Lady Eloise and Lady Mercedes.” Marie said as she gestured to the entrance of the drawing room.

One by one, four people walked into the room as the maid called out each name. All of them were Salukis of varying ages and genders. An adult male Saluki, a senior male Saluki, an adult female Saluki and a teenage female Saluki. Max could see where Bradley got his apparent love for cardigans as both the male Salukis wore one, the adult fellow sporting an orange cardigan and the senior having a blue cardigan. Meanwhile the ladies shared a love of pearls with the adult female Saluki wearing pearl dangle earrings and the teenage female Saluki wearing a pearl bracelet. They were dressed well, but also in a way that was comfortable and welcoming. Maybe this meeting won't be so awkward after all. The adult Saluki was the first to approach them, smiling a wide smile that Max now realized Bradley got from him, and was the first to address them.

“Bradley, my boy! So good to have you back at home, and with such handsome company! You must be the famous Max Goof who helped knock some sense into my son. Bradley Uppercrust the 2nd. But to avoid any confusion, you can just call me Bradman.” The older Saluki, Bradman, stated as held out his hand to Max who happily shook the offered limb.

“Nice to meet you, sir. And I wouldn't say I knocked sense into Bradley. He came to his senses on his own. I just said what he needed to hear.” Max replied as he gave a smile to his boyfriend who smiled back. This time the older female Saluki approached them and spoke.

“What an understanding thing to say, Max. Not many people would be as gracious to our Bradley as you. Still, we do believe in giving credit where credit is due. And it's quite clear from what our son has told us that you have played a pivotal role in him changing for the better. I'm Eloise Uppercrust.” The woman, Eloise, said as she gave a curtsy to the freshman who bowed his head to her.

“Charmed, Madame Eloise.” Max said, then immediately winced to himself when he realized how stupidly formal that sounded. Luckily Eloise didn't seem to mind and actually smiled at him and even gave a little chuckle.

“While I appreciate the formality, my first name is enough darling.” Eloise said as she patted the freshman on the cheek like the loving mother she was. Finally, the senior and teenage Saluki joined the crowd.

“Nice to meet you, Max. I'm Mercedes, but you can call me Mercy if you want. Rad Brad tells me that you're a culinary arts major. He must have told you I like baking.” The teenager greeted as she held out her hand for Max to shake.

“Rad Brad?” Max parroted in surprise as he shook Mercedes's hand while looking to Bradley in amusement. Said senior's face was frozen with horror for a moment but quickly shifted into a glare towards his sister.

Mercedes Uppercrust! I told you not to say that ridiculous nickname around Max!” Bradley sharply stated.

“Oh? But I don't recall you saying that exactly, brother mine. You said, and I quote, 'not to ever speak that childish nickname you gave me around company or business partners'. I don't recall you ever specifying not to refer you as such in the presence of romantic partners. Why wasn't I informed? Surely being a criminal justice major, you know the importance of informing all the relevant parties of major contract changes.” Mercedes replied, her emerald green eyes that she got from her father tender and blinking like doe eyes as she feigned innocence.

But Bradley just glared harder at his younger sister, seeing right through her act. Max had to cover his mouth as he could barely hold back his laugh. Mercedes was definitely a little sister. She had Bradley dead to rights with every loophole. Max could easily see her getting along with Pistol if they were to meet. Perhaps he could ask if the Pete's were up for arranging special play date.

“I must say, I do agree with young Mercy. You ought to know the importance of keeping all parties up to date, Bradley.” The senior Saluki said, twirling his cane in a thoughtful manner. Mercedes smiled in a smug manner while Bradley looked at the older man with a look of playful betrayal.

“Et tu, grandfather?” Asked the senior to the older man who shrugged as he gave a grin.

“You know how I am, grandson. Just trying to be consistent. And to keep up with the consistency – allow me to introduce myself.” The older Saluki said as he turned to Max and tipped his bowler hat to him. “Well met, good fellow. I'm Bradley Uppercrust the 1st, but you can just call me Grandfather Lee to keep things simple. I'm the man responsible for these other two. They say the sequel is never as good as the original, but that the trilogy makes up for the sequel. And I must say, I do agree.”

“How you wound me, father. And after I was gracious enough allowing you to win our last chess match.” Bradman said as he feigned a look of hurt and dramatically leaned back with his hand against his forehead.

But, as he did so, the adult Saluki didn't account for the potted plant near him and knocked into it. From there Max bared witness to what was the most bizarre Domino Effect he had ever seen in his life. First the potted plant fell backwards, which made it hit against a tall lamp, which then made the lamp knock against the tall box of Halloween decorations next to the ladder Henrietta was standing on, which then fell onto the ground and caused all sorts of decorative baubles to fall out and roll out onto the floor of the drawing room. But one big decoration, a life-sized plastic skeleton, came unfolding out of the box and its arms flailing all about. This resulted in the skeleton knocking its arms into the helmet of a nearby suit of armor – and said helmet was knocked off, flew through the air and finally landed smack dab on Bradman's head.

“Oh my God!” Max exclaimed in shock, however none of the other Uppercrust's or even the maids or Alfonso batted an eyelash. Obviously, they were more than a little used to things like this.

“Good heavens. Who closed all of the curtains?” Bradman asked, pivoting his body left and right which made the metallic headpiece he was now sporting squeak with every motion.

“No one, my beloved. Great-Great-Great Grandfather Uppercrust just came knocking again, as it were.” Eloise said as she walked over and with a few tugs took the helmet off Bradman's head. The man shook his head a bit as his eyes readjusted to the light before he looked at the helmet and then at the headless suit of armor.

“Ah, I see now. You'll pardon that display, Max my boy. Great-Great-Great Grandfather likes to do a bit of friendly haunting every Hallows Eve. It's all in good fun, though! You understand.” Bradman explained with a smile as he patted Max on the back in a reassuring fashion.

“B-But...that wasn't...you just...” Max trailed off in astonishment as he tried to explain what really happened, but the older man looked to his platinum Rolex and gasped.

“Dear me, how time flies! I do apologize, Bradley, but your mother and I have to see to the last few details for the party and our costumes before the guests arrive. But I promise that you and Max will have our attention come tonight's festivities.” Bradman said as he hurried out of the room.

“No worries, father! We understand!” Bradley called out with a smile as he waved his male parent off.

“But...!” Max tried to address insane event that just happened until Alfonso patted him on the head.

“Let it go, Maestro Max. You learn to live with Maestro Bradman's oblivious way of life.” Alfonso said with a grin.

“Listen to Alfonso, darling. I certainly know from experience, having been married to that man for thirty-five years. Sometimes it's better to act like you don't notice...” Eloise said with a tired sigh, but then her face brightened into a loving smile. “But what can I say? I adore Bradman with all my heart. Even if he hikes up my insurance premiums. Ah! That actually reminds me. Mercy, will you be a lamb and tell the staff to put our cars in the spare garage at the far end so that the main garage is cleared out for the cars of our guests?”

“Yes, mother.” Mercedes said with a nod as she left the drawing room.

“Splendid! I'll be off with Bradman, then. We'll see you boys later tonight. Alfonso and Marie will tend to you for your costumes when it's time.” Eloise said.

“Say, what are we dressing as anyway ma'am?” Max asked. To this Eloise gave a playful smile and tapped the Labradoodle on the nose with a manicured fingernail.

“Well, that would be telling, wouldn't it? Can't go spoiling the surprise, Maximilian. But I will say this. You and Bradley will be Halloween royalty.” Eloise said with a wink before she walked out of the room, her pumps clicking on the marble floor rather rhythmically as she walked.

“What do you think she meant by that?” Max asked his boyfriend.

“Knowing mother's love for themes? Your guess is as good as mine. And I dread every possibility.” Bradley replied with a roll of his eyes.

“I guess that leaves us to entertain ourselves in the meantime. Now Max – Bradley tells me that you have a predilection for a certain pop singer called Powerline.” Grandfather Lee said.

“You know Powerline, Grandfather Lee?” Max asked in surprise.

Know him? Why I as the lad's vocal coach, once upon a time. Still chat with him every so often. I could tell you stories, even.” Grandfather Lee said with a smile.

“Seriously!? Brad, you never told me your family was this cool!” Max said as he shook the senior's arm in excitement.

“H-ha, ha! Thought I'd surprise you with this little fun fact when we came. After I told everyone that I was bringing you over Grandfather Lee told me that Powerline was one of his students. He was even backstage at one of his concerts.” Bradley said as the three of them left from the drawing room.

“Really?” Max asked.

“Yes, and it was a very memorable one. A boy and his father crashed the performance, but they actually wound up making it grander.” Grandfather Lee replied.

Oh. That...sounds really fun, heh.” Max said, feeling a sudden wave of embarrassment. Well, that's sure going to make for some interesting party talk at the punch bowl tonight.

Several hours later...

The light blue sky and white clouds were soon replaced by a blanket of dark blue and stars before anyone knew it, but the staff at Uppercrust Manor were ready. The entire place was decked out a like the greatest house of horrors you've ever seen. The once elegant estate now looked horrifically horrendous, and inside the once welcoming décor was now styled in a way that dared visitors to come in but didn't promise that they would be able to leave. Any other day all of these would be worrying signs, and it would make the average person turn around. But today was Halloween. And tonight guests were lining up gain access into the den of eerie delights that was now Uppercrust Manor.

A luxurious red carpet, blood red of course, was laid out for the guests to walk on. And it was one VIP after another. Celebrities, politicians, professional athletes, movie stars, award winning scientists, musicians and even a few incognito blue bloods. And they were all decked out in their garish, ghastly finery. Vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein's monsters, mummies and swamp creatures as far as the eye can see chatted and reveled in the festivities. But of course there were others who dressed in costumes that were less frightening and more heartening. For every witch there was a fairy, and for every devil there was a knight. Some folks even took to dressing up as figures from history, musicals and certain cartoons. Speaking of which...

“How do I look, my dearest?” Bradman asked as he turned to Eloise in, his shoulder cape and chiton making a dashing flourish as he stood before his multi-faceted mirror in their bedroom after he finally finished changing into his costume of Julius Caesar.

“Every bit the Roman Emperor, but ten times more handsome.” Eloise said with a smile. Then she did a twirl to showcase her own costume, lavishly styled in a silk dress and jewels befitting the aesthetic of Cleopatra. “And how do I look, my beloved?”

“Like the Queen of the Nile herself, but twenty times more beguiling.” Bradman replied as he wiggled his eyebrows to his wife. The pair leaned in to kiss each other before their bedroom door slammed open to reveal a man dressed as a plague doctor.

“I picked a most advantageous costume for this party.” The costumed man said as he took off his mask to reveal the sarcastic glare of Grandfather Lee. “Need I remind you two that this is Halloween, not Valentine's Day? Pucker up on your own time. The last of the guests are arriving and Bradley and Max are nearly done getting into their costumes!”

“I must say, father, if you had told me that you weren't going to wear a costume to the party I wouldn't have minded. You'd probably still manage to scare a lot of people.” Bradman quipped with a grin.

“Hardy, har, har. I hope you weren't looking into comedy as a hobby after you retire, Bradman. Now if the queen and emperor would be so kind as to grace their unworthy subjects with their presence?” Grandfather Lee asked as he stepped aside and sarcastically bowed and gestured for the couple to step out.

“Yes, yes! We're coming, Grandfather Lee. Oh, I do hope that Max and Bradley will adore their costumes! They're going to be the crowning jewels of the party.” Eloise said with sparkles in her as she walked out of the room first.

“What costumes did you pick for them, Eloise? You never mentioned before.” Bradman said as he followed after his wife, then was followed by his father.

“I must confess, I didn't quite pick them out. That credit goes our precious Mercedes. And her costume is actually a matching piece with Max and Bradley's.” Eloise explained.

“Really? Well darn it, Ellie, what could they possibly be dressed as? The Three Musketeers?” Grandfather Lee asked in a tone brimming with curiosity.

“Oh please, nothing that simple! Just wait. The band knows their que when Bradman and I come down the stairs. You'll see, I promise.” The female Saluki said with a wink.

Once at the head of the stairs, the lights all dimmed and a spotlight settled on Bradman and Eloise. The costumed couple stood confident, Bradman's rugged charm and Eloise's radiant glamour complimenting each other like two things that just go together no matter what. The guests below all clapped at seeing their hosts and marveled at how stunning they were. Like a models out of a portrait brought to life. The couple bowed to the applause and slowly descended down the steps. To the crowd it seemed like Bradman was taking extra care of his delicate wife – but in reality Eloise was taking care to ensure that her danger prone husband doesn't trip on the steps if she lets go of his arm. Eventually they made it down to the last step, and at that Eloise gave a knowing grin to the band leader and nodded to him. The grizzly bear man gave a nod back and turned the podium before his band mates and tapped his baton on the podium to get the band's attention. Everyone in the band poised their instruments, and the singers readied themselves to start their melodies. Without further delay the band started their tune.

Everybody scream! Everybody scream!

In our town of Halloween...

The dim lighting quickly turned black as the spotlight turned into a kaleidoscope of orange, purple and green lights as the singers in the band sang that all too familiar tune. Then large holographic projections of a disfigured circus clown, a ghostly owl, a body of smoke with eyes and a flowing cloak with a crescent moon for a face appeared above the crowd. And each projection acted out the lyrics the band were singing.

I am the clown with the tear-away face! Here in a flash and gone without a trace!

I am the “who” when you call “Who's there?”

I am the wind blowing through your hair

I am the shadow on the moon at night. Filling your dreams to the brim with fright

This is Halloween, this is Halloween!

Halloween! Halloween!

Halloween, Halloween!

Halloween, Halloween!

Suddenly, a green spotlight flashed between two guests. And out of nowhere Mercedes appeared between them in a flourish – which gave them quite the start – dressed as Zero from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Tender Lumplings everywhere. Life's no fun without a good scare.” Mercedes sang, giving a fake sorrowful expression before skipping from between the two guests as she playfully greeted and 'scared' everyone else.

That's our job, but we're not mean

In our town of Halloween

In this town, don't we love it now

Everyone's waiting for the next surprise

Skeleton Jack might catch you in the back

And scream like a banshee, make you jump out of your skin!” Mercedes sang, leaping from behind a banister which startled the pirate costumed. Alfonso and made him, in fact, scream rather shrilly. But more like a woman than a banshee much to the mermaid costumed Marie's amusement as she chuckled.

“You're lucky that this cutlass is plastic, Señorita Mercedes.” Alfonso growled lowly.

“Heh, heh. Sorry, Alfonso.” Mercedes apologized with an awkward smile before she went back to the crowd.

This is Halloween, everybody scream!

Won't ya please make way for a very special guy?

As the band sang this, the colored lights turned back to a normal spotlight and slowly panned up the stairs. The crowd followed the light as it made it's way to the top. And even before it did they could see a silhouette in the darkness walk across the top of the step before the figure took a stance in the center. Then once the spotlight got to the top it rested on the figure and revealed Bradley Uppercrust the 3rd dressed as Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas. From the black pinstripe suit to the white skeletal face paint and the tall, refined stance – Bradley looked the part in every way.

Our man Jack is King of the Pumpkin Patch

Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King now!

This is Halloween, this is Halloween!

Halloween! Halloween!

Halloween, Halloween!

As the music took on a softer tone, Bradley turned his head to the right and stepped to the side while he gave a smile, outstretching his hand. The guests below seemed confused but looked to where the Uppercrust son had stretched out his hand. Soon enough a new figure had stepped out from the shadows on the opposite end. It was Max, and he was dressed as Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Adorned in a patchwork dress and blue leggings with stitch patterns and matching arm warmers and styled with blue face, stitched make-up to give the illusion of being a ragdoll made Max look every bit the Pumpkin Queen. He even let his hair down, literally, and let Marie apply some temporary red dye highlights. Although even with the make-up on Max was sure his blush was showing as he saw all eyes from below were on him. But the smile Bradley gave him was enough to give him the confidence to step forward and accept his hand.

In this town we call home, everyone hail to the Pumpkin Song.” Mercedes sang in a soft, melodic voice at the bottom of the stairs before she twirled gracefully like a ballerina and spun into the center of the room as she was singing la, la, la all the way.

The band chorused to the la, la, la's while chanting Halloween in between as Bradley and Max walked down the stairs hand in hand. As the band and Mercedes finished their song with a gleeful 'wee' the young couple made it to the last step and bowed to the crowd. Then the lights finally came back on, and the guests who previously stood in stunned silence when they first saw Max appear gave a round of applause. The Saluki graciously nodded at the attention, experienced in such a response as the elite that he was. Meanwhile the humble Labradoodle fidgeted a bit awkwardly as he tried not to look at his black flats in nervousness. Max may have accepted a trophy at the X-Games Tournament, but that was in his element with a crowd of regular people who all came from the same background as he did. These were all folks who were apart of the crème de la crème. No way did he fit in.

“Quit it.” Bradley whispered as he gave a quick peck on Max's cheek as he looked him in the eyes. “I can hear the gears turning in that cute little head of yours. I know what you're thinking, Max. You're not here by mistake. You're here because you deserve to be. Because my family wants you here. Because I want you here.”

Max blinked in surprise at the gesture, then blinked again at what his boyfriend said. By the end of his sentence the younger man relaxed and held tighter onto the hand that was still holding his.

“Thanks, Bradley. That means a lot to me.” Max said.

“You're welcome, Max. And I do mean it. Frankly speaking if all of the guests tried to call for you to be removed, I'm perfectly content with making this a party with just the six of us and the staff.” Bradley stated.

“Ha! I don't think your parents and grandfather would be down for that, dreamboat.” Max said with a chuckle.

“On the contrary, my boy, I would second the motion!” Spoke the boisterous tone of Bradman which made Max and Bradley look up to see Bradman, Eloise, Grandfather Lee and Mercedes approach them. “I can't tell you how many parties I've cut down from two-thousand guests to twenty because of some smarmy so-and-so who thought they could come into my home and disrespect my family. Just ask Grandfather Lee or Mercedes. They'll vouch for me.”

“That depends on if the gag orders are up on certain cases, father.” Mercedes replied with a slight smile. Max blinked and mouthed 'is she joking' to Bradley who gave a tired smile and mouthed back 'no'.

“Ah, right. I forgot about those. Well at any rate – Bradley's right! Who cares what others think, Maximilian? You're here with us. With Bradley. That's all that matters.” Bradman said with a smile.

“And so help me, if anyone has a problem about it, you can be assured that I will quash the would-be troublemaker personally.” Eloise assured.

“To add to the fact that we like having you here better than any stuffed shirt. Just because we all go to the same country club doesn't mean they're our friends, Max. And I can definitely say that even after just meeting you today, I'd rather spend time with you than most of girls from my private school.” Mercedes said.

“Family means the world to us, Max. Especially new family. Like in-laws. We look after each other. Never forget that.” Grandfather Lee said. And even though he had his plague doctor mask on Max was pretty sure he gave a hinting wink at the word 'in-laws'. Something that he and Bradley couldn't help but blush at the implication of, but that didn't stop them from staying close together.

“Thank you. I really do appreciate you all for telling me that.” Max said with a wide smile.

“So does that mean that now you'll enjoy the party without worrying your pretty little head about anything else?” Bradley asked with a hopeful expression.

“Heh. Yeah, yeah. Let's go and mingle with the guests. I'm sure it's not every day that you come to these parties with a plus one anyway.” Max said.

“Not really. Actually, you're the first. So stay close to me, Max. A lot of people with ill-intentions would love nothing more than to pull you apart at the seams. And I'm not just saying that as a pun for your ragdoll costume.” Bradley said, his face turning serious as he led Max into the crowd.

“Gotcha. But I'm not worried. I give as good as I get. And besides, I have my brave and bony king to protect me.” Max said with a grin. To this Bradley gave an amused scoff and grinned back.

“I promise you that the bone is merely the make-up.” Bradley said then paused as he leaned down to whisper the next part to his boyfriend alone. “You ought to know how strong I really am, too, from our little session in the limousine.”

Brad! Seriously!? Your family is just a few feet away!” Max scolded as he kicked the Saluki in the leg as they walked, his face flushed bright red with embarrassment which made Bradley laugh even in spite of the mild pain in his leg.

So the party went on – the Uppercrust's mingling with the many guests while Alfonso, Marie, Henrietta and the rest of the staff served anyone who wanted snacks or drinks. Of course the real draw were Max and Bradley. It was true, having never brought a plus one to his parents' annual Halloween parties Bradley's date garnered him a lot of attention. And when he told people that Max was his boyfriend, that definitely piqued the interest of many a guest.

“You both actually met at college? How quaint, Bradley! A pair of real-life college sweethearts in this day and age.” An older Persian cat woman dressed as an angel said with an over the top, exaggerated haughty sounding laugh that made Max want to physically cringe but he forced himself to just smile, albeit very awkwardly.

“What can I say? I guess I'm more of a romantic at heart than I realized. And Max made me realize that the more we spent time together.” Bradley replied, switching from his practiced facade of poise with the Persian lady to look at Max with a genuine expression of love that made the Labradoodle smile at him with less awkwardness.

“You simply must bring him to the country club next weekend, Bradley. We're having a couple's event. You and Max could double date with the missus and I.” Said an otter man dressed as Santa Claus while he hugged his wife, who was dressed Mrs. Claus.

“That sounds like fun. We'll definitely keep that offer in mind.” Bradley said with a smile.

“How does it feel to be the newest member of the Uppercrust family, Maximilian?” Asked a female pig dressed as a vampire.

“Well, I wouldn't really say I'm a new member of the Uppercrust's. I'm still just Max Goof. But it is nice to be with Bradley and to have met his family.” Max replied.

“Never say never, deary. There's plenty of space on either of those hands for a ring.” The pig lady said with a playful wink which made the couple and several other guests in the circle chuckle.

“Are your parents in attendance, Maximilian? We'd love to meet them as well.” Said a chimpanzee young man dressed as a ninja.

“Oh no. It's just me here. My dad and his new wife Sylvia are enjoying their honeymoon.” Max said with a smile.

“New wife, eh? Well at least you're old enough to not have to be around the step-monster and playing house with her. Hopefully your own mother got enough alimony to make up for being traded in for a newer model, too.” Said a secretary bird dressed as a witch in a rather snide tone as she sipped her champagne while her flock of friends giggled at her words.

Bradley narrowed his eyes at the woman and looked at Max. His face was unreadable for a moment, but he noticed a distinct downward curl in his lips. The Saluki was about to signal for Alfonso to take him away so that he could give this broad a proper dressing down. But then, to his confusion, Max gave a wicked smile and replied.

“Actually, Sylvia is a great lady. The only thing monstrous about her is her attitude when you try not to pay your dues for turning in an overdue library book. So I have no problem playing house with her. As for my mom, well she's been dead since I was three. So there's nothing to really make up for.” Max stated rather bluntly.

This made the secretary bird do a mild spit-take while the other guests surrounding the young couple gasped. Immediately the 'my condolences' and 'you poor thing' statements were showered over Max while several others glared at the avian woman. Bradley was sure she felt immense regret at wearing the costume she had – for it seemed to serve as a representation of her attitude in the eyes of everyone else. Even the friends of the witch costumed lady backed away from her somewhat, as if to say they weren't associated with her. After regaining her composure, the secretary bird tried to save face.

“A-Ahem! I see! Well...my condolences to you, Maximilian. I had no idea your father was a widower.” The secretary bird stated with a tight smile, trying to backtrack.

“It's alright. You've only just met me – and it's not like I go around telling people my life story.” Max replied with a kind smile, but then it dropped into a stern frown. Bradley felt a distinct chill go down his spine. This must be the infamous 'dad face' Bobby and P.J. had told him about. “Still, I don't appreciate people assuming the worst of those I care about. And Sylvia is someone I care about very, very much. So I'd like it if you never do that again.”

“I...y-yes. I understand. I am terribly sorry, Mr. Goof.” The secretary bird apologized; her head hung low in shame. Even her the plume in the back of her head seemed to droop down to express how ashamed she felt.

“Thank you. Well, if none of you mind, Brad here owes me a meal. Even a ragdoll needs stuffing. So we'll be at the catering table. Right, dreamboat?” Max asked, making sure to bat his eyelashes just to sell the bit even more.

“Of course, my dear macaron. Whatever you want. We'll be on our way then. All of you enjoy yourselves.” Bradley said as he bowed his head to the guests before he walked away with Max, making sure to direct an especially smug huff to the secretary bird while walking past her. He relished in her humiliated glare and the swift turn of her heels as the woman stalked off in an angry gait followed by her gaggle. “You handled that beautifully, Max. I'm very proud.”

“Thanks, but it wasn't easy. Any other day I would have slapped that bitch right across her polished beak for what she said about my mom. It's a miracle I was able to keep my temper in check.” Max said, letting the anger show in his face but otherwise remaining calm.

“Mother wouldn't approve of you doing that, I'm afraid.” Bradley said with a shake of his head.

“Yeah, I get that. I didn't want to cause a scene either.” Max said in understanding.

“Oh no, I didn't mean it like that. She just doesn't believe in slapping. It's less accurate than if you were to punch someone. Plus she feels that as far as expressing your point physically it's a weak way of doing so. Not to mention you risk chipping a nail.” Bradley replied in a matter-of-fact tone.

Max blinked in surprise at hearing this, but then he laughed.

“Ha, ha, ha, ah-hyuck! I almost asked if you were joking, but then I remembered I'm talking to an Uppercrust about another Uppercrust.” The Labradoodle said.

Now you're getting it.” Bradley said with a wink and a finger gun in approval.

“Ah, boys! There you are!” Called the voice of Eloise and the pair looked to their left to see the woman briskly walking over to them. “I do apologize, Max darling, but would you mind terribly if I took Bradley for a while? A certain investor in the automotive industry wants to talk shop and he brought his son along for an 'heir play date' of sorts.”

Ugh, really mother? Not the Anderson's. You know I can't stand those blowhards. Especially their son.” Bradley groaned with a roll of his eyes.

“I know, my dear. Trust me; it's taking every bit of self-control I have to not get the corkscrew from the kitchen and give myself a lobotomy just so I don't have to hear another word from that vapid Mrs. Anderson. But sometimes one must suck it up and face adversity for the sake for business, Bradley. I promise – we will make this as short and sweet as possible.” Eloise said with a pleading expression. Unable to deny his mother the male Saluki looked to Max.

“I'm sorry, Max. Would you mind dining without me to start? I swear that we'll have dessert together.” Bradley said.

“No problem, Brad. Running a big company is a top priority. Take all the time you need. And you two play nice with the Anderson's.” Max said with a grin.

“No promises.” Mother and son said in unison as they walked away, similar expressions of annoyed dread on their faces. Max couldn't help but chuckle. Now he saw where Bradley got his no-nonsense disposition from.

“Well then, I guess I'll take a page from Bobby's book and familiarize myself with the spread.” Max said as he walked over to the catering table.

As Max made his way up to the table he saw that there was a rather uniquely dressed couple there. One was male bobcat who was dressed as the Nutcracker from the ballet the Nutcracker Suite, and the other was a female fallow deer dressed as the ballerina. As Max checked over to see what sort of goodies the table had he could hear the couple talking from where he stood a few feet away.

“Now remember, trail mix, make sure you don't get anything that has spinach in it. You'll break out in hives from your first bite.” Said the fallow deer.

“Don't worry, doll face. I learned my lesson after last time. I'll steer clear of that stuff.” The bobcat promised.

“Good. I'm going to fetch us some drinks at the other end. Be right back.” The fallow deer said and gave a quick kiss to the bobcat's cheek before she left for the other end of the catering table.

Max couldn't help but smile at the scene. The couple reminded him of his own dad and Sylvia, they were so cute. As he turned back to decide which of the appetizers he wanted he saw out of the corner of his eye that the bobcat scanning over the table before something caught his interest.

“Ooh, what do we have here? Epinard croissants? Well those sound pretty good.” The bobcat said as he started to reach out to grab one of the appetizers. Max's eyes widened and he immediately spoke up.

“Uh, excuse me sir.” Max said quickly, thankfully managing to stop the bobcat from touching the stuffed pastry.

“Huh? Can I help you, friend?” The bobcat asked.

“Sorry, it's just that I couldn't help but overhear your date mention that you have a problem with spinach. And I wouldn't grab that particular appetizer if I were you. Epinard is French for spinach, sir. Those are spinach croissants.” Max explained.

“No foolin'?! Well shucks, talk about a close shave!” The bobcat exclaimed in shock as he wiped a sudden cold sweat from his brow then held his hand out to Max. “Thanks for the save there, young man! I owe you one. The name's Bonkers. Bonkers D. Bobcat. Detective by trade but I have a childhood love of theater, like any lad with dreams.”

“Max Goof. Extreme sports athlete in training as far as dreams go, but chef is a potential trade for me. And no worries, Mr. Bobcat. I'm just glad I could stop you before you had a bad reaction.” Max said with a smile as he shook the man's hand.

“Oh please, it's just Bonkers. Like my ma always said; you'll wind up calling me Bonkers one way or another.” Bonkers said with a grin which made Max chuckle, just as the fallow deer arrived with two glasses of champagne.

“I see you made a new friend, trail mix. You're that stunning fellow who was with the Uppercrust son earlier, aren't you?” The lady asked.

“Heh, heh. Yep – that's me. Max Goof, miss. Pleased to meet you.” Max greeted.

“This is my fiancé, Fawn Deer. Fawn, this champion among men saved my life by warning me about these croissants, and how they have spinach in them.” Bonkers explained, introducing his fiancé to Max and gesturing to the offending croissants.

“Really? Well, I thank you from the bottom of my heart Max. Bonkers means the world to me. I'd just go to pieces if something happened to him.” Fawn said with a smile as she handed Bonkers his glass and gave him a loving look.

“You're welcome, Miss Fawn. And I feel the same way about Brad. So to commemorate this new friendship, let's take a look at some spinach-free appetizers we can enjoy together.” Max said with a wink which made the couple laugh.

Meanwhile, Bradley has subjected to conversation that was far less stimulating. He was grateful that he'd be graduating this year because he could feel himself losing IQ points the more he listened to the Anderson's talk. The family's company, Anderson Chariots Enterprises, dealt in the automotive industry. They worked with all sorts of methods of transportation from automobiles to commercial vehicles to even motorcycles. The family was very small compared to Bradley's – just the father and founder Joel Anderson, the devoted trophy wife Viola Anderson and their son Gabriel Anderson. Bradley met Gabriel some odd years ago when he was studying abroad for his high school senior year. At first Bradley thought that Gabriel had a strong sense of ambition and drive that he could utilize for his own goals down the line. But very quickly he saw that the Finnish Spitz was all bark and no bite. So Bradley was quick to label him as “interact as needed”. The only instances he would go out of his way to talk to Gabriel and his family was when it concerned business since Joel was a sizable investor.

But just because he had to occasionally filter out the 75% of irrelevant nonsense between the 25% of relevant business talk, didn't mean that Bradley had to like it.

“And can you believe that the staff of that hotel actually told me that they can't open the kitchen for room service past the listed dinner hours? Ha! They made it sound like the place was locked down and they couldn't access it. And it's not like they don't get paid to do that type of thing.” Joel said with a pompous laugh.

“Well, you know old man, the staff need to sleep also. Probably not a wise decision to have a sleep-deprived cook work the stove.” Bradman replied with a tight smile. As big as an investor Joel was, the man wasn't very big on common sense. But he sure was big on showing off, hence why he dressed as Odin – and he had all of the accessories to try and pass off as the King of the Norse pantheon.

“I suppose that makes sense, when you put it like that...Still! You'd think they would have round the clock-chefs if they have round the clock security.” Joel replied with a haughty huff.

“Yes, and hopefully they'll open a petition to fight against such injustices in the future. Now about the expansion project.” Bradman said, trying to get the adult Finnish Spitz back on track with the point of their conversation.

Poor Eloise was no better off. She was on her third glass of champagne as she listened to Viola yammer about this shopping spree and that fashion show she sponsored. She hated having a stronger than average tolerance to alcohol in that moment. It's going to take a buzz to make being near this hapless broad tolerable...

“Don't you think so, Ellie dear?” Viola asked, her overly cheery voice snapping Eloise out of her thoughts and making her pay more attention to the woman dressed as Frigg, the wife of Odin.

“H-Hm!? Ah, I'm terribly sorry Viola...dear. My mind was wondering. Losing myself to the party, I suppose.” Eloise lied. It wasn't the greatest lie, but it didn't have to be. The beautiful yet brainless female Finnish Spitz could be convinced of anything.

“Oh, yes! I completely understand. But like I was saying, I happened upon this stunning necklace while antique shopping and just had to have it! Isn't it gorgeous? It even goes with my costume.” Viola said as she gestured to her neck.

Eloise looked down and took in the accessory's details. The somewhat thick chain of the necklace was pure gold, and it had a rather large iolite gemstone in the center and smaller sunstones bibbed along either side of the chain. The female Saluki had to admit, what Viola lacked in smarts she made up for in style.

And as for Bradley? Well, he wished that he was anywhere but talking to Gabriel. He didn't like how overly friendly the guy always was, as if they had known each other for years. When in reality Bradley could do without even knowing his name. How he wished he pull away like Grandfather Lee and Mercy were able to; the former using the excuse of 'thinking he saw an old friend in the crowd' and the latter claiming to 'wanting to see if the other guests found the decorations scary enough'. They didn't even look back as Bradley offered, practically begged, to go with them. It's always the ones you love, as they say.

“But really, Bradley, we definitely need to set aside a day to properly catch up! If I didn't know any better I'd say that there was some conspiracy happening to make it so that you don't have the time to hang out with me, old pal of mine.” Gabriel said with a jovial laugh. He chose to match his parents' theme and dressed as Hermod, the messenger of the Norse pantheon and son of Odin and Frigg. The figure honestly suited Gabriel's character as Hermod was known for his swiftness and communication. And boy could Gabriel communicate. Too much, in fact.

“Really? I hadn't noticed.” Bradley said, but of course it was a lie. There was no conspiracy. He was making damn sure that he didn't have time to spare that could allow Gabriel the chance to wriggle into his schedule.

“And I especially want to catch up after hearing what I've heard. So Bachelor Bradley is no more, eh?” Gabriel asked with a grin as he playfully elbowed the senior in side with a bit of extra force which made Bradley stumble a bit before he regained his footing and composure.

“A-Ahem! Well yes, I do indeed have a boyfriend now. He's here with me in fact.” Bradley, letting a happy smile cross his face as he thought of Max. He hopes that we can finally be done with this boring interaction so that he can go back to his beloved macaron.

“Well what are we waiting for? I'd like to meet the cutie pie who turned my old buddy's head.” Gabriel said with an eager grin.

At this, Bradley's smile dropped instantly. Introduce Gabriel to Max? He knew that Max wouldn't say no because he's just like that. A polite and civil person who doesn't try to make a scene. But could he allow his boyfriend to be subjected to such senseless prattle? Bradley gave a look to his parents and saw them still talking with Joel and Viola. Clearly they weren't going to be done any time soon. And he may not get a chance to get out of this literal corner. Damn it to Hell...

“I...guess that's fine, sure.” Bradley replied with a fake smile before turning to his parents. “Mother, father, Gabriel and I are off to find Max. He wants to meet him.”

“Oh, what a splendid idea! We'll go with you boys!” Eloise exclaimed as she turned to Bradley.

“Why yes, the more the merrier as they say!” Bradman added with smile.

“Nonsense, Bradman. Let the boys have their time away from the golden oldies. Besides I haven't even told you about the abhorrent way the staff at the day spa I was at in Milan last month treated me.” Joel said as he started off on another tirade of poor customer service.

“Ah, which reminds me! Ellie dear, I just have to share you these photos of the newest fashion line from my show in Italy.” Viola said as she pulled out a digital camera from her purse.

Bradman and Eloise regarded the Anderson couple with tight smiles, but Bradley knew inside they were groaning from the additional hour of suffering they were likely going to endure. Giving a sympathetic expression to his parents the Saluki mentally sighed, wanting to get this over with, as he turned to Gabriel.

“Well, since our parents are both busy with each other, I guess we'll be off.” Bradley said as he led Gabriel away from their parents.

Elsewhere, Max had taken to a quiet corner to chat with Bonkers and Fawn. He learned that Bonkers was a detective of their town's local precinct and Fawn was an actress. The pair had met when Bonkers was assigned to be her bodyguard during a point in which she was getting threatening notes from an embittered former agent. Over the course of the situation they grew close, and after the former agent was arrested Bonkers asked Fawn on a date to which she accepted. The rest, as they say, is history.

“And you say that Bradley's major is criminal justice, Max?” Fawn asked.

“That's right. He wants to become a trial lawyer.” Max replied with a smile.

“Well, I just so happen to know the DA personally. You just tell your beau to give me a call and I'll see about getting him an internship.” Bonkers said with a smile.

“Bonkers, I don't think the DA having to come down to the station at 3AM to confirm that you are a detective when you left your badge at home technically counts as knowing him personally.” Fawn said with a slight smile.

“Sure it does! We exchanged personal numbers after that. Granted he said that he was only doing that because the voicemails I left on his office's answering machine was always filling up the inbox, but still.” Bonkers said which made Fawn and Max chuckle. Just then Bradley came up the trio along with Gabriel.

“There you are, my little Pumpkin Queen. I thought I lost you. And I see you've made some new acquaintances.” Bradley said as he looked to Fawn and Bobcat with a kind smile.

“Oh, hey Brad. This is Bonkers D. Bobcat and his fiancé Fawn Deer. Guys, this is my boyfriend Bradley Uppercrust the 3rd.” Max explained as he introduced the couple to Bradley and vice versa.

“Glad to meet you.” Bonkers greeted with a casual salute.

“Charmed.” Fawn said as she gave a curtsy.

“The pleasure is all mine. I hope that you both are enjoying the party so far. And I actually have someone who wanted to meet you, Max.” Bradley said, groaning a bit inside as he braced himself for the annoyance to come.

“Oh yeah? Who?” Max asked. With a sigh Bradley stepped aside to reveal Gabriel, as he stood behind him.

“This is Gabriel Anderson, heir to Anderson Chariots Enterprises.” Bradley said as he kept it short and simple.

“It's an honor, Max.” Gabriel said as he held out his hand for the Labradoodle to shake.

“Really?” Max asked in surprise as he shook his hand.

“Of course! How many people can say that they've met Gabriel Anderson in person? But since you actually managed to make an honest guy out of my friend Bradley, I just had to see you for myself. Now you can say you got to know the other hottest heir in town.” Gabriel said with a wink.

Max could feel his face start to twist in disgust at the Finnish Spitz' self-praising statement, but he managed to turn it into an awkward smile. He looked down and saw that Bonkers and Fawn didn't even try to hide their displeasure. They both looked at Gabriel with expressions that asked 'is he serious right now'. And looking at Bradley he mouthed the words 'not my friend' very clearly while shaking his head to emphasize his point.

“Yeah...well, that's one thing to cross off the bucket list for sure. Listen – Bradley promised that we'd have dessert together and I think they're going to start serving it soon. So would you mind if we left?” Max asked.

“Not at all! Besides, I've been trying to get the phone number of that hot server chick dressed as a mermaid since we got here. So I'll be going back to see if I can reel in a catch of the day, if you know what I mean.” Gabriel said as he gave a seductive growl that just made Max want to scream 'eww', but he knew he couldn't.

“I can only imagine.” Max said with that same awkward smile.

“Well then, I'll see you all later. And Bradley, you got yourself a real prize here, old pal.” Gabriel said as he patted Bradley on the back. Again, the gesture came with more than the required force. And again, Bradley stumbled a bit from the harshness of the 'friendly' touch.

“Thanks...old pal.” Bradley forced out with an equally forced smile. As soon as Gabriel turned and left the small group, the Saluki turned to look at Max with a frustrated expression. “Play nice with the Anderson's, you said?”

“Okay, so it's not easy playing nice with them. I wasn't sure if the dress was bigger on me than I thought or if my fur was trying to crawl off me.” Max said with an uneasy expression as he hugged himself and rubbed his arms.

“I had a co-star like that kid once. Let's just say that any woman who has to play opposite to him gets paid a little extra just for having to put up with the louse.” Fawn said with a shake of her head.

“I'll bet the apple doesn't fall far from the tree with that guy either, huh?” Bonkers asked.

“Well his father didn't need to dress as Odin to have a God Complex, if that's what you mean. At any rate – I finally got away from that oaf. And I want to continue with enjoying this party with you, Max.” Bradley said with a smile as he took Max's hands into his which made the younger man smile back.

“I was thinking the same thing. It was nice talking to you both.” Max said, turning to Fawn and Bonkers.

“Same here! We won't keep you two any longer.” Fawn said with a wave of her hand.

“Yeah, you crazy kids go have fun.” Bonkers added with a smile.

Max and Bradley bid the other couple their goodbyes and made their way to the dessert table. Luckily Marie was serving there so Bradley was able to give her a heads up about Gabriel, which she greatly appreciated. And the ever-protective Alfonso was likewise on guard for the Beagle woman. While his cutlass was merely a plastic prop, it was a hard plastic prop that could still hurt something awful if you're hit with it. Max had the Xoloitzcuintli promise to let him know when he's going to do it so he can get a picture. Bradley made sure that Max got to try the best dessert the caterers had to offer, which was their chocolate lemon bars sprinkled with sea salt.

“Mmm!” Max exclaimed in delight as he took in his first bite.

“I take it you approve?” Bradley asked with a knowing smirk.

“Mmm hmm!” Max stated happily with a nod as he savored the first bite before swallowing. “They're delicious! The lemon custard is perfectly tart, and the chocolate is nice and sweet. The sea salt also helps add to the chocolate flavor. And I can't believe they used dark chocolate, too! It's my favorite chocolate.”

“Oh really? Well, what a small world it is.” Bradley said with a nonchalant shrug, but inwardly he patted himself on the back for paying the caterers extra to make the lemon bars with dark chocolate as he knew it was Max's favorite and wanted to have a special treat for his boyfriend made.

“Bradley, I'm really having a wonderful time here. I'm glad that I came. And that I get to enjoy this night with you.” Max said as he leaned to rest his head against Bradley's strong chest, careful not to smash his dessert into his suit.

Bradley smiled and wrapped a free arm around Max's waist as he pulled him closer and kissed the top of his head.

“And having you here has been the highlight of my evening, Max.” The Saluki said in a loving voice. It was truly the perfect moment.

So, of course, it was likewise the perfect moment for a new person to intrude upon the couple. A voice from behind cleared their throat and was then followed by a smooth French accent.

Excusez-moi, messieurs. If I could have a moment of your time.” Spoke the new voice.

Bradley and Max turned around to see who was talking to them, and they were greeted by a striking man of a Braque d'Auvergne Pointer. He looked to be a little younger than Grandfather Lee, but with the way he carried himself one could almost assume he was as old as Bradman. As he was dressed like the Phantom of the Opera the domino mask only allowed the younger canines to see half of his face. But it was just enough to see that he was, in fact, quite the looker.

“Well, how could we deny such a formal request, Mister...?” Bradley trailed off in question as he fully turned his body to properly address the man, and Max turned along with him.

“Arpin Lusene. Art collector, art dealer, patron of the arts and all that sort of jazz. A pleasure to meet you in person, Monsieur Uppercrust.” The man, Arpin, said as he held out his hand for Bradley to shake.

“Oh yes, I think I've heard of you before. A man who has the largest collection of Edgar Degas paintings in Paris. It's an honor to meet someone else with good taste.” Bradley said with a small smile as he shook the older canine's hand.

“Ah, my collection is of a modest size. But I appreciate your kind words nonetheless.” Arpin said with a smile, then slowly turned his head to gaze down at Max. “And...speaking of good taste, is this the illustrious Maximilian Goof that I've been hearing so much about?”

At this question, Max and Bradley reacted in two different ways. Max was shocked and blushed a little, surprised that people at the party were talking about him. And Bradley? Well he was shocked too, but he didn't blush. Oh no – it wasn't his cheeks that turned red. But his eyes sure were seeing red. Did this old codger just flirt with his Max?

“Uh, yeah. I wouldn't really say illustrious but I'm Max Goof. C'est un plaisir de vous rencontrer, Monsieur Lusene.” Max said, letting his French speak ease out as he held out his hand.

“Ah, and how fluidly you speak my mother tongue! Such a delightful surprise to hear from an equally delightful person.” Arpin said as he took Max's hand, but he didn't shake it. Instead he pressed a kiss to Max's knuckles.

Max blushed even more, while Bradley's left eye twitched and a low growl rumbled in his throat. Who. In. The HELL. Did this under-cooked quiche think he was? Just as Bradley was ready to lash out Max pulled his hand away from Arpin and grabbed the senior's hand.

“Ha, ha! Well, yeah, you know. That's probably the poodle half of me talking. Anyway me and my very handsome boyfriend will be leaving! Enjoy the party, Monsieur Lusene!” Max exclaimed and before Bradley could even protest Max pulled him along and practically ran off to another part of the room.

As he watched them leave, Arpin grinned and chuckled to himself.

Enchanté, Maximilian. But rest assured that we shall see each other again before the night is over.” Arpin said as he strutted away.

Meanwhile, Max had led Bradley out through the back doors that led to the back patio. He wasn't entirely thinking of where they should go. He just knew he had to get away. And after finally settling on the back patio he stopped running and panted along with Bradley. The first to catch his breath Bradley turned to Max to speak to him.

“Max, why did you...?” But before he could ask further Max turned to him and started rambling.

“I'm sorry! I just...I panicked! The second he kissed my hand I felt a rush, and I was so embarrassed. He did that with you right there! And there's no way he doesn't know that I'm your boyfriend if he heard about me. I wanted to punch him, kick him, something! But I didn't want to cause a scene at your parents' party! So I...I just had to run!” Max explained in a rush, pacing back and forth, before he finally sat down on the lounge and let out an exasperated sigh and buried his face in his hands.

Bradley blinked once at this revelation, then twice. Then his face broke out into a wide smile as his heart swelled. Max wasn't swayed by that posh bastard. And he wanted to get away with Bradley. How could he not be happy? Setting down his chocolate lemon bar, which he was surprised that he hadn't dropped all this time, Bradley sat next to Max and wrapped a comforting arm around him.

“Oh Max. You don't have to be sorry for anything. If anything I'm very happy.” Bradley said.

“You are? How come?” The Labradoodle asked, looking up from his hands.

“Well, Max, it's pretty hard for most people to not fall for a suave Frenchman. But you didn't. You stood by me. Naturally, I'm touched by your commitment to me.” Bradley replied with an earnest smile. Max blinked up at Bradley for a moment, and then he slowly smiled back.

“Of course I'd stand by you, Brad. I mean, after all we've been through, how can I not? No kind of suave Frenchman could pull me away like that.” Max said.

“So I see. Especially since I'm very handsome.” Bradley said with a grin which made Max blush when he realized that he had said that.

“Y-Yeah, well...you're pretty easy on the eyes. I'll admit to that. What? I can't say my boyfriend looks good?” Max asked as he tried to put up a tough expression, but it only looked like an angry pout on him.

“Sure you can. In fact I welcome you reminding me of this illuminating fact on a regular basis.” Bradley said as he gave a confident flip of his bangs to which Max rolled his eyes in amusement.

“I'll bet you would. But I've met my quota of stroking your ego for today.” Max replied with a teasing smirk.

“Ha! That sounds like something Mercy would say.” Bradley said with a laugh.

“Great. Now Max can say it so I don't need to repeat myself.” Said a familiar voice and the pair looked up to see Mercedes grinning at them. “I was looking all over for you both. The band is about to start playing again. Mother and father have the first dance, of course. And they want you to have the next dance after them.”

“Us? As in me, dance with Bradley?” Max asked in surprise.

“That's the idea of a couple dancing, Max, yeah.” Bradley said.

“But I've never danced before. At least, nothing fancy like this. I'll make you look stupid, Brad.” Max said as he looked down, now feeling a pang of self-consciousness.

“Max, I'll only look stupid if I dance with anyone but you. And I'd rather be embarrassed with you than dance the greatest dance ever with someone I don't care about.” Bradley stated.

“Even if the person you care about has two broken left feet?” Max asked with a deadpan expression.

“Pfft! Yes, even then. Now come along, macaron.” Bradley said as he stood up and helped Max to his feet.

“Alright, alright. But before that, are you going to finish your dessert?” Max asked as he pointed to the chocolate lemon bar his boyfriend sat down.

“Huh? Well no, not really. You can...” Bradley's response was cut short for, as soon as he picked up the plate with the little dessert and held it up to Max, the younger man snatched it up and swallowed both Bradley's chocolate lemon bar and his own in one gulp. “...have it.”

“Sugary courage. I got a year and a half before I can legally have liquid courage. So that was the next best thing.” Max stated.

“Obviously.” Bradley said with an amused grin and led Max inside with Mercedes following beside them.

The young couple arrived just in time to see the lights dimmed and made it to the front of the crowd to see a spotlight shine down upon Eloise and Bradman. The older couple bowed to the crowd before they turned to each other, both sharing loving smiles. The band started playing Fascination by Nat King Cole, and both Salukis bowed to each other before they drew close and began a slow waltz. One of the few instances where Bradman wasn't a danger-prone disaster was dancing with Eloise. In those short moments, Bradman Uppercrust was the picture of poise and Eloise Uppercrust was a vision of grace. Even Grandfather Lee, who stood at the other end of the guests who gathered to watch, watched his son and daughter-in-law with his mask removed which showed an unmistakable smile. Their movements were completely in sync with each other. And they actually reminded Max of the dancing figurines in the music box from the movie about that lost princess. Eventually the song came to an end with Bradman slowly twirling his wife before he carefully pulled her into his arms and dipped her. Max, Bradley, Mercedes, Grandfather Lee and all of the guests applauded the couple and and the regular lights turned back on. Bradman and Eloise bowed to the crowd before they approached Bradley and Max.

“So, what do you think?” Eloise asked.

“You ask that as if you weren't a champion ballroom dancer in your high school days, mother. You were excellent, naturally.” Bradley said with a smirk which his mother returned as she giggled.

“And you were amazing as well, father. Perfect form!” Mercedes praised with a smile.

“Thank you, Mercy. It feels nice to be able to strut about in something besides a suit.” Bradman said with a smile.

“So, me and Brad are next?” Max asked, trying to hide his nervousness.

“Yes! Since it is a special occasion, Bradley bringing someone so dear, we wanted there to be two main dances for tonight before we allowed the other guests to dance.” Eloise replied cheerily.

“Great...” Max trailed off with a forced smile, but inside he didn't feel quite as confident. Noticing his boyfriend's worry, Bradley decided to step in.

“Father, mother? Does the song have to be for a waltz? I think that may be a little too slow in pace for Max and I.” Bradley said.

“Why no, son. You can have the band play whatever song you want, if you'd like something with more bounce! Do you or Max have a special request?” Bradman asked.

At hearing this Max's nervousness died down some. He could pick a song that wasn't slow paced, and didn't have to do a waltz? Well that changes things for sure. Thinking for a minute, the freshman tried to come up with a song that would fit with a high-brow crowd but also something that he knew. Suddenly it hit him. A tune from an old movie series he used to watch growing up with his dad about a clumsy detective and a huge pink diamond.

“Actually, I think I do have a request. Could you have the band play...” Max pulled away from his boyfriend to whisper the song's name to his parents. Curious Bradley tried to lean forward to listen without looking too obvious but Mercedes pinched him sharply in the hip which made her brother recoil back and glare at his teen sister who just glared back at him. But whatever Max said, it seemed like his parents liked the choice of song for Eloise and Bradman were smiling like loons.

“That's a perfect song, Max darling! I think you and Bradley could do a nice foxtrot with that.” The older female Saluki said.

“Well that makes one of us, ma'am.” Max said, not even hiding the nervousness in his smile.

“Don't worry, my boy, you'll do fine. Especially with Bradley leading. We'll go tell the band your request.” Bradman said and left with his wife to go to the band stand.

“I'm going over to catch up with Grandfather Lee. It's almost time for his 9:30PM medication, too. Good luck to you both.” Mercedes said as she waved off her brother and Max before she too left.

“So may I be privy to the song I'll be dancing to?” Bradley asked teasingly.

“You'll find out when you hear it. Just trust me.” Max said with a wink. Once again the lights dimmed and a spotlight formed on the center of the room. “Looks like that's our cue.”

Bradley bowed to Max and held out his hand, which the Labradoodle accepted and they walked into the center of the room. The guests all clapped and watched as the two canines took their positions. Or rather, as Max let Bradley position him. He didn't know what the Hell to do – other than look as dainty as possible. And even that was a struggle. But looking over Bradley's shoulder to see the kind faces of his boyfriend's family and even Alfonso, Marie and Henrietta giving looks of support made him feel better. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the band played the song he requested – Meglio Stasera by Henry Mancini.

“Really, Max? And I thought Father Goof was retro.” Bradley said with a roll of his eyes but smiled regardless.

“What can I say? Some classics just stick to ya. Now come on, you're leading. So lead, Pumpkin King.” Max teased with a grin.

“As you wish, my Pumpkin Queen.” Bradley teased back with his own grin as he literally swept Max off his feet as they began to do a foxtrot.

The song definitely fit to Max and Bradley's more energetic movements as they swayed and hopped about on the dance floor. Max was a bit off with his footwork, but Bradley skillfully made up for it with a perfectly timed spin or bounce. Otherwise the younger man found that he was actually having fun. He was actually doing a fancy dance at a fancy party with his fancy boyfriend. Nothing could possibly ruin this moment.

But of course, someone was going to try. By the second half of the song Bradley felt a tap on his shoulder. Confused he turned around to see who it was, as all of his family were in the crowd. To his utter horror it was none other than that silver-tongued charmer, Arpin Lusene.

Bonsoir, Roi des Citrouilles.” Arpin said with a wide, toothy smile that seemed unnatural.

You!” Bradley sharply whispered as he glared at the pointer while Max looked up and gasped in surprise.

Monsieur Lusene!” Max exclaimed softly.

“What the Hell do you want!?” Bradley demanded in a whisper as he and Max continued to sway to the song with Arpin practically circling them as he moved with surprising fast footwork.

“Why, nothing much mon ami. I simply came to steal your Pumpkin Queen.” Arpin said with a mischievous glint in his eye and a matching tone of voice.

What?” Bradley asked in a growl as he stopped dancing to glare at the Phantom costumed man. This distracted him enough to allow Arpin to snatch Max from his arms, twirl him for a bit and then pull him close.

“For a dance, of course. It's been a while since I've danced with royalty.” Arpin said with a wink before picking up where Bradley left off as he danced a foxtrot with a completely stunned Max.

Bradley stood there; mouth hung open in astonishment at what just happened. Meanwhile the guests all thought it was part of the show and watched on with eager expressions. Bradley's family and the staff who actually observed the situation watched on with concerned looks. The senior didn't just stand there, though. His jealous fury quickly took over his shock as he stormed over to get his boyfriend back. While all this was happening, Max was having a word with the Arpin. Or rather, giving him some choice words.

“You creepy asshole, let me go! Bradley's my boyfriend! And even if he wasn't – hello! You're old enough to be my dad's dad!” Max whispered angrily while also trying not to show it to the guests. If only this was the campus club and not a manor house gala. Then it'd be perfectly acceptable for Max to knock this guy's block off.

“I can see why the Uppercrust son is so taken by you, ma petite poupée de chiffon. You have a certain fire to you that could rival the very sun.” Arpin said with a smile as they danced.

“If you don't let me go, buddy, I'll launch you straight into the sun.” Max threatened.

“Ah, but if you were to do that I wouldn't be able to properly warn you.” Arpin said, his partially revealed face turning serious as he gazed into Max's eyes while they slowly spun around.

“What? Warn me?” Max asked, now confused and somewhat worried.

Oui, mon cher.” Arpin said as he leaned down to whisper into Max's ear. “Sometimes, when you keep your friends close and your enemies closer, you're doing both with the same people.”

The Labradoodle's eyes widened in shock at hearing this, and as Arpin pulled away to look at him he could see in the one half of the pointer's face that was visible that he wasn't playing around. Before Max could ask what he meant he saw Bradley appear behind the older man like a spirit of vengeance and grab hold of his shoulder.

“Alright, bastard, you asked for it!” Bradley growled as he raised his other hand in a fist to punch Arpin as he started to twist him around.

However, the older man was stronger and quicker than Bradley had expected. He not only didn't turn around, but he easily grabbed Bradley's fist before it could make contact with the side of his face. With a grin back on his face the pointer twirled Max until he was outstretched to one end, looking as though he had both young canines in a dance now, then twirled Max back to clasp his hand over Bradley's fist and pushed the young couple together until they were chest to chest and spun them both out to the center of the dance floor. As they came to a stop in their spin Bradley, on instinct, dipped Max who lifted his leg in a rather flashy manner as a sort of reflex – just as the song came to an end. The guests cheered and applauded twice as much, still thinking they had just been given a planned out live performance. Arpin, of course, tipped his hat to the crowd and gave a bow while Bradley and Max still stood in their position in surprise at the events that just occurred even as the lights came back on.

“That was a wonderful dance, mes amis. I definitely enjoyed myself. I think I'll help myself to your fine dining. And next time, Maximillian, we shall have a dance of our own.” Arpin said, and after blowing a kiss he turned and swaggered off to the catering table with a flurry of his cloak.

“...I'm going to break him in half.” Bradley swore as he watched the older man walk away.

“Well if you don't set me up straight, I'm going to be the one broken in half.” Max groaned in pain.

“O-Oh! Sorry, Max.” Bradley said apologetically as he helped Max stand up properly who let out a sigh of relief.

“Damn it. Nobody told me how dancing makes you feel muscles you didn't know you had.” Max said. Just then Bradman, Eloise, Mercedes, Grandfather Lee and Alfonso came over.

“Let me guess. That wasn't part of your routine.” Bradman said with a look of concern at the young couple.

“No, it most certainly wasn't father. That...that...that...!” Bradley had so many different names he could call the Frenchman, but he was either too angry to say them coherently or didn't want to say them in mixed company. Knowing his boyfriend? Max figured it was more than likely the former.

“Yes, he certainly is that indeed.” Grandfather Lee supplied with a nod, effectively cutting off whatever string of curses Bradley had in mind.

“The guy sure knows how to work a room. Are you alright, Max?” Mercedes asked with a look of concern as she walked over to the freshman. Max smiled warmly and patted her on the shoulder.

“Yeah. I'm fine, Mercy. Honestly I was mainly surprised. I'm just glad I didn't flip my lid in front of the guests.” Max said.

“Well, darling, you'll get no protests from me if you had. Impetuous fools in high society only learn the hard way, I'm ashamed to say. Just don't slap him. It's not as accurate as punching and you'll break your nails. To say nothing of what a weak point it makes.” Eloise stated.

“Dully noted, ma'am.” Max said with a smile, thinking back to what Bradley said about his mother not believing in slapping.

“With that being said, I'll gladly escort the plaga demasiado confiada out of here forthwith if that is what you wish Maestro Max.” Alfonso said.

“No, don't worry about it Alfonso. As far as all of the guests are concerned it was part of the show. And I don't want to ruin this party over something so stupid.” Max replied.

“Some creep who can't keep his hands to himself is hardly stupid, Max! Especially when his hands are all over you. And I'll return the favor when I put my hands all over his neck and...!” Bradley's dangerous rant was cut short as Bradman wrapped an arm around his son's shoulders and pulled him into a tight half hug.

“Aaaand I think it's time for a brief son and father intermission! I agree with Max. Throwing out Mr. Lusene now would cause a stir. However, Alfonso, I do want you to keep an eye on the man until the party is over.” Bradman said, talking as if he was totally unaware of the fact that his own son was practically frothing at the mouth with a thirst for vengeance.

“At your command, Maestro Bradman.” Alfonso said and walked away. Likely to stand in the wings somewhere to keep an eye on the aforementioned Frenchman.

“Father why don't you, Mercedes and Eloise show Max the study? I think he'd find the decorations in there very bewitching. Pun intended.” Bradman said with a grin which made his family groan or roll their eyes in amusement.

“I said I hope you weren't looking into comedy after retirement, son.” Grandfather Lee said, but ushered Max and the lady Salukis off to the study nonetheless.

“Will Mr. Uppercrust be able to calm Brad down? I didn't think he'd be so upset.” Max said with a worried look as he watched Bradman lead his boyfriend away to the beverage table.

“Don't worry your pretty little head, Max. What Bradley is showing is just the classic Uppercrust man jealousy. He's not upset with you at all. And there's no one better suited to soothe such fury like another Uppercrust man. All will be well.” Eloise assured as she patted Max on the head.

“I hope so.” Max said, still not looking convinced.

“Fret not, Maximilian. So long as we keep you out of the eyesight of that Lusene character, I'm positive that no further incidents shall occur this evening.” Grandfather Lee said.

Little did Grandfather Lee know, however, that he couldn't be more wrong.

“I want to kill him, father.” Bradley growled in anger as he swished his glass of whiskey. He was in far too foul a mood to enjoy any champagne and needed something stronger.

“I know, son.” Bradman said.

“I want to break every bone in his body, father.” Bradley said as he took a sip of his whiskey.

“I understand the femur is a popular bone to start with.” Bradman replied as he sipped his own glass of whiskey.

“If I see that Lusene creep near Max again, I'm going to make those black specks in his fur red.” Bradley swore with a prominent glare on his face before downing his whiskey in one gulp.

“It's what he justly deserves, son.” The older Saluki nodded in agreement.

“...Father, are you even listening to the fact that I'm openly plotting to murder someone?” Bradley asked with an annoyed look.

“Of course I am! And I completely empathize. You just remind me of how I get into a similar snit when it comes to your mother. So really, your homicidal ranting is nostalgic in a morbid way.” Bradman replied with a sincere smile.

At this Bradley seemed to calm down, suddenly recalling incidents he's witnessed himself of his father being jealous over his mother. It was a type of rage that Bradley both respected and pitied any man foolish enough to test Bradman's love for his wife.

“Oh, right. I guess that's where I get it from then.” Bradley said as he looked down at the remaining amber droplets of whiskey in his glass as if they held the answer to everything.

“Don't look so melancholy, Bradley. You got it from me, I got it from your grandfather, he got it from his old man and so on. We Uppercrust men are notorious green-eyed monsters when it comes to our to sweethearts. But with that in mind we must always abstain from being violent in expressing our jealousy. We're better than that.” Bradman stated.

"With all due respect, father, didn't you once buy the majority shares of another man's company and sell it off to his competitor for the price of a fast-food combo meal because you were jealous that he made mother giggle with some lame knock-knock joke because she liked his delivery better even though you told her the same joke?" Bradley asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Damn straight, and I'd do it again. But I didn't get violent about it." Bradman said with a wicked smirk as he sipped his whiskey. “The point is, son, as tempting as physical retribution is an Uppercrust man doesn't stoop to such depths unless it's in the defense of his beloved. He always takes the high road.”

“...Eww.” Bradley finally said with a look of disgust.

“Well when I say 'high road' I don't mean all that 'give peace a chance' bollocks. I mean show up your rival with your superior status. We're rich and good looking, my boy! Use them to your advantage! Especially regarding the person whom you wish to make a new Uppercrust out of later down the road, or should I say aisle, and spoil him rotten.” Bradman further explained, giving a supportive wink and nudge.

“Ah, that makes more sense. That's doable.” Bradley said before he let out a sigh and smiled to his father. “Thank you, father. I actually feel a lot better. You always know what to say.”

“You're welcome, son. Say – I just had a capital idea! Let's commemorate this night with a new family photograph with Max!” Bradman exclaimed with a smile.

“Really?” Bradley asked in surprise.

“But of course. I wasn't kidding when I said 'later down the aisle', Bradley. It's more than apparent that you're serious about Max, and he's clearly just as smitten with you. If that's not a reason to say cheese, I don't know what is.” The older Saluki said. Bradley blinked at his father for a moment before setting his glass down and hugging him.

“Thank you, father. This means so much to me.” Bradley said, and Bradman smiled softly as he hugged his son back.

“No need to thank me, Bradley. Family is a top priority after all. And I for one like the sound of Maximilian Goof-Uppercrust for a future son-in-law. Now, go and fetch the others. I'll get Henrietta to ready the camera.” Bradman said and sent his son off while he turned to get the elephant maid.

A little while later, the Uppercrust Family and Max were all gathered between the grandfather clock and a gargoyle decoration. Eloise and Bradman stood together in the back, Grandfather Lee stood to the left, Max and Bradley stood together at the right and Mercedes stood in front of her brother and the Labradoodle.

“Alright, the camera is all set! Everyone ready?” Henrietta asked with a smile. Max had to admit – he didn't expect the pachyderm maid to dress up as the Mad Hatter. But she really pulled it off.

“We certainly are, Henrietta.” Bradman said with a nod.

“You sure you're not mad anymore?” Max whispered to Bradley.

“Yeah, I'm sure. In truth I really had nothing to be mad about. I know you'd always pick me over anyone else. And nothing, not even that slick pointer, could possibly ruin a perfect night like this.” Bradley said as he gave Max a peck on the cheek which made the freshman blush and giggle.

“I'm happy to hear that, Brad. And I agree. This night is perfect.” Max said.

“Alright, big smiles everyone!” Henrietta exclaimed and all of the canines smiled to the camera. “Now say cheese!”

“Cheese!” The Uppercrust's and Max all exclaimed at once. With that, Henrietta took the picture in a bright flash.

But suddenly, as if it were a cue, everything in the manor house went pitch black. The guests, staff and of course the Uppercrust family and Max were all stunned by this and the main room immediately filled with voices clamoring in confusion and a bit of fear. Questions of 'what happened', 'who turned off the lights' and 'is this part of the party' bounced off the walls. But none were more confused than Bradley and his family. They absolutely didn't plan for this blackout to happen. So they had no idea why it was occurring.

“What in blazes!?” Grandfather Lee asked in shock.

“What's happening?” Mercedes asked, suddenly feeling uneasy.

“Hey, don't worry Mercy. I'm sure that it's just a power outage.” Max assured, feeling in the dark to lay a hand on what he figured was the youngest Saluki's head.

“Max is probably right. We do have quite a lot of lights set up, after all.” Bradley agreed. Just then two flashlights shined from either end of the room and they bounced over to the small group, revealing the respective wielders of the lights to be Alfonso and Marie.

Damas y caballeros, are all of you alright?” The butler asked.

“Such awful business. And the party was going so well.” Marie said with a frown.

“We're all okay, Alfonso. And don't you worry, Marie. We'll get this party back up and running before you know it. We should check the circuit breaker in the main garage and see if...” But Eloise's sentence was stopped short by a sudden flurry of new sounds.

It was a mix of loud shuffling and urgent, pained grunting. Like someone was being pushed against a wall. Then came the sound of objects falling and hitting the ground with several resounding thuds. It sounded like it was coming from the study not too far from where the group stood. But then the worst sound of all came from the apparent scuffle that was going on.

AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!” Sounded the agonized scream of a man. Now the guests were really in a fit – many gasping and a few even sounding like they were crying from the terror they likely were experiencing.

“Who was that!?” Max asked in shock and worry.

“I don't know, but we're going to find out. Alfonso, Eloise, father – you all come with me to the study. Marie, stay here with Bradley, Max and Mercy.” Bradman ordered.

“Of course, Master Bradman.” Marie said with a nod and watched as the three older Salukis ran off to the study with Alfonso guiding the way with his flashlight.

“Bradley, I don't like this.” Max whispered to his boyfriend in a worried tone.

“I'll admit, I'm a bit anxious myself. But let's just play it cool for now, Max. Hopefully whoever screamed just stubbed his toe...real bad.” Bradley said. Although he didn't sound that certain about it.

Just then, the power suddenly came back on. The lights and LED decorations all came alive again as if they weren't off and like the whole manor house wasn't just plunged into darkness.

“Well that's one issue that resolved itself.” Marie said as she turned off the flashlight she was holding.

“But what on Earth could have caused it? None of the lights or decorations seem to have blown out.” Henrietta pointed out as she looked over the room.

“I don't know, but we should go catch up with mother and father to see what that scream was about.” Bradley said.

AAAAAAAHHHHH!!” Came the shrill scream of a woman that made the group all wince and cover their ears in pain.

“Which one?” Max asked with a pained look.

“That sounded like Viola Anderson, I think.” Marie said with a shocked look.

Bradley, Max and Mercedes all shared their own looks of shock before running over to the part of the room where they heard the scream. Near the now abandoned band stand they saw a small crowd had gathered around and the trio pushed their way to the front. There they saw Viola kneeling over, hyperventilating, and her son and husband on either side trying to calm her down.

“Please, Viola, calm yourself. It'll be alright.” Joel said as he rubbed his wife's back and tried to console her.

“Yeah mom, we'll find it. Panicking won't do you any good.” Gabriel added as he held his mother's right hand.

“What's the matter, Gabriel? What happened? What is it that you have to find?” Bradley asked as he stepped closer. Before either man could answer the female Finnish Spitz stood up, her hair moving in a wild flurry as she glared at Bradley with a face stained with ruined make-up from her crying.

“What's the matter, you ask!? What do we have to find, you inquire Bradley!? Just look at my neck! My antique necklace as been stolen right off my person!” Viola screamed as she pointed urgently at her neck, which Bradley saw was in fact bare unlike how it was half an hour ago.

The guests all gasped in astonishment at this and began to whisper among themselves, shocked that a theft had occurred at an Uppercrust party. Max could only observe as Mercedes and Bradley immediately went about trying to calm the situation down. Clearly they were experienced in handling matters like this. As he looked around and observed all of the talking guests, one person did stand out. The cloaked, half-domino mask of a certain pointer in the background – practically hiding behind the band stand. Max's eyes narrowed in suspicion, wondering why Arpin was standing there and seemingly spying on the scene. But before he could point it out to Bradley or Mercedes one of the guests spoke up.

“I can't believe that someone here would actually steal from you like this, Viola!” Exclaimed the Persian cat lady – her fake wings seeming to flutter in time with her reaction.

“Oh no, dear heart. It wasn't just someone here who stole my necklace. It was a professional. A true master of his craft. Look! Joel found his calling card pinned to the back of my costume!” Viola stated as she held out what looked to be a plain old business card. Just then a new voice spoke up as someone else began to shove through the crowd.

“One side, people! Back up! Official business in operation now!” Said a voice that Max immediately recognized and he looked down to see none other than Bonkers come into the fray, holding up his badge. “Alright – everybody calm down. I'm Detective Bonkers D. Bobcat. And I'm officially handling this stolen necklace business.”

“You're a detective?” The otter man dressed as Santa Claus asked in surprise.

“You bet your reindeer, pal. And one of the best of my precinct.” Bonkers said as he puffed out his chest in pride.

“Um, Detective Bobcat. You're holding your badge upside down.” Mercedes whispered in the bobcat's ear. Bonkers looked down and saw that she was right and quickly turned his badge the right side up.

“Ahem! Well, it's a pretty big precinct. Anyway, there's no need for you to worry ma'am. I'll find your necklace before the perp can even try to call his fence. Now what's this about a calling card?” Bonkers asked.

“Here, detective! It's simply awful! To think that such a horrible man could sneak his way into here!” Viola wailed in despair as she handed Bonkers the card, then leaned into Joel who immediately embraced his wife to comfort her while Gabriel tried to speak soothing words.

“What does it say?” Bradley asked.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Uppercrust, your guess is as good as mine. The card has a black helmet emblem on it, but the words are written in French. So it's all Greek to me. I don't suppose anyone here is fluent in French and can read it to boot?” Bonkers asked to the amassed crowd, and everyone slowly shook their heads.

“I can, actually.” Max spoke up, still keeping his eyes on Arpin. He saw that the man was still standing behind the empty band stand. And after Bonkers described the emblem on the card his face seemed...surprised?

“Seriously? Well shucks kid, you're the complete package. You'd be doing a huge service to your local law enforcement if you could read this for me.” Bonkers said as he held the card up to Max. The freshman accepted the card and looked over the French words, then read it aloud.

Don't take it personally, madame. I was in town for some antique shopping – and your necklace was too tempting to pass up. I promise to take good care of it. With love, the Black Knight.” Max said as he read off from the card.

At hearing this the whispers all ceased with only a few soft gasps of shock spoken and Viola's sobbing in the background as the guests all shared stunned looks. Max looked to Bradley and was surprised to see that even he looked like he had seen a ghost. Bonkers also looked rather shell-shocked. And looking back to where he saw Arpin hiding, Max saw that the pointer looked the most shocked of all. But then his one visible eye narrowed in a glare before he ducked out of sight. What in the world was that about? And why did Arpin look so angry?

“Dear God...” Bradley muttered ominously. Before Max could ask what was wrong, Alfonso suddenly came over.

Maestro Bradley, Maestro Max. Your parents and Maestro Lee wish to see you both in the study. And you as well, Detective Bobcat. It's...important.” Alfonso said, face looking rather uneasy as he trailed off his last words.

“Alright, we're coming. Mercy, can you handle things here with Marie and Henrietta?” Bradley asked.

“Sure, no problem. But guys, both of you be careful. Please.” Mercedes said, looking at her brother and Max with worried eyes.

“We will. I promise.” Bradley assured as he gave his sister a quick hug before he, Max and Bonkers followed after the Xoloitzcuintli.

As they made their way to the study, Max couldn't help but notice the polar opposite moods of now versus earlier when he went to the study with Grandfather Lee, Eloise and Mercedes. Earlier it was a happy mood. They were laughing and smiling as they looked through old family photo albums and Max got to see the rest of the decorations. But now? There was no laughing, and certainly no smiling. Now Max felt a knot of worry in the pit of his stomach as he, Bradley and Bonkers followed Alfonso. Could this be about the first scream they heard come from here? If so, what in the world could have happened? Was the person badly hurt? So many questions ran through Max's head. And he almost didn't want the answers.

But as Alfonso opened the doors of the study and stepped aside to let the young couple and detective in, he knew he was going to get them whether he liked it or not. Bradley, Max and Bonkers were greeted to a sight of Grandfather Lee sitting on a chair next to the lounge – and Eloise and Bradman were standing at the head of the lounge. At the sound of people coming in the older couple turned to see the trio and immediately rushed over to them.

“Oh, Bradley, Max! Thank goodness you're both alright.” Eloise said with a sigh of relief as she hugged the two young men.

“What happened out there? We heard a woman scream, but we couldn't leave as we had a situation here.” Bradman said.

“That was Viola Anderson. She isn't hurt, but her antique necklace that she wore was stolen.” Bradley explained.

“What!?” The parents asked in unified shock.

“Yeah, and the guy left a calling card. It says it's from the Black Knight.” Max said. And at seeing Eloise and Bradman practically recoil as he said the name, he was positive that whoever this Black Knight was posed a great threat.

“I see. Well then, I wonder if that explains what happened here.” Bradman said in a contemplative tone.

“What happened exactly, sir?” Bonkers asked.

“You're the detective?” Eloise asked.

“I am indeed, ma'am. Bonkers D. Bobcat – here to protect and serve.” Bonkers said as he gave a salute.

“That's good to know, Detective Bobcat. Although this may be considered a form of overtime for you.” Bradman said as he gestured for the trio to come over to the lounge that Grandfather Lee was sitting at.

They all did so, and as soon as they got close enough they gasped in horror. Laying on the couch was the chimpanzee dressed as a ninja that Max remembered asking him about his parents being at the party earlier. But this time the man's mask was off to show his actual face. But what really stood out was the medium sized knife wound in his left arm. The second thing that stood out was the blood covered steak knife in the surgeon's tray next to Grandfather Lee, the apparent tool used to inflict such a wound, as he worked to patch up the poor unfortunate soul.

“Oh, shit...” Max cursed in shock as he beheld the gruesome scene.

“I can't believe this. And you found him like this? With the knife in his arm?” Bradley asked to his parents.

“Yes. His name is Lawrence Sawyer. He's a freelance engineer. He's worked all sorts of big-name contracts. Including a few for subsidiaries that Uppercrust Shipping owns. So it was natural that we invited him.” Eloise explained.

“I thought he looked familiar. He was at the charity ball in New York last year. And hey – isn't he working on that expansion project with Anderson Chariots Enterprises now?” Bradley asked.

“He is indeed. I had actually meant to discuss it with him since Joel was practically stonewalling me trying to talk about it. When I didn't find him before your mother and I had the first dance, I figured I'd just speak to him later. I wonder if I had tried looking for him more...” Bradman trailed off, a look of guilt slowly etching onto his face.

“Bradman, don't you start that rubbish. You had no way of knowing that this would happen. None of us did. And frankly speaking if whoever did this was willing to do it in our family home, even if you did know, you'd likely have an injury just like Lawrence. Or far worse.” Grandfather Lee said, not looking up from his work as he tended to the wound.

“I know, but still. I want to be able to fix this. Make amends for what happened.” Bradman said, running a frustrated hand through his air.

“You can accomplish that by providing your full corporation with my investigation, sir. Starting with your guest list. Particularly highlighting the names of anyone who knew Mr. Sawyer and Mrs. Anderson personally. My spots are tingling – and they're telling me that both of these crimes are linked somehow.” Bonkers said.

“We're at your complete disposal, Detective Bobcat. Alfonso – please go fetch the guest list from my office.” Eloise said.

Sí, Señora Eloise.” Alfonso said as he gave a bow to the female Saluki and hurried off.

“Great. Then I'll start poking around and go from there.” The bobcat said and left the room.

“And we'll leave Lawrence here to rest for now. I took care of the stab wound. It thankfully wasn't too deep. But the sedative I gave him will have him as a guest of the Sandman for a while.” Grandfather Lee said, standing up to wipe his hands as he observed the now sleeping chimpanzee.

“You did an exceptional job, grandfather.” Bradley complimented to which the older Saluki smiled a bit and shrugged.

“Serving for God, queen and country as an army surgeon is like riding a bicycle, Bradley. You never forget.” Grandfather Lee replied.

“Well, if that's all sorted, there is one question that I have.” Max spoke up.

“What is it, darling?” Eloise asked.

“Who is the Black Knight?” Max asked back.

At this, all of the Salukis shared an uneasy look of recollection before sighing.

“That's right. You probably never heard about him, Max. But then again he only has a specific type of target.” Bradley said as he rubbed the back of his neck.

“Target? Jeeze, are we talking about a hitman with diplomatic immunity?” The Labradoodle asked with a look of growing worry.

“Not exactly. Although many people would probably rather take a shot to the head, if he was. Just a moment – we had a magazine delivered last week that actually had a feature on the Black Knight.” Bradman said and went over to the newspaper and magazine bin and flipped through the whole lot before finding what he was looking for. “Aha! Here it is. He was in this month's issue of Five-Star Lifestyles & Entertainment.”

Bradman walked over to Max and handed him a magazine – the cover filled with glamorous pictures of glamorous people. But at the bottom right-hand corner was a silhouette of a suit of armor running with a caption underneath that said “Have at thee! The Black Knight Strikes Again! Rare Photograph Included!” and the page number the article was on. Max immediately flipped to that page of the magazine and was greeted by an enlarged photograph of a man in a black suit of armor in a motion that appeared like he was running past some luxury day spa with police chasing several feet behind him while carrying a large sack. Likely filled with something that wasn't his. And the first two words that caught Max's attention at the start of the article made his eyes bulge in shock.

“Master thief!? The Black Knight is a master thief?” Max asked in surprise.

“That's right. And he only goes after the cream of the crop among elites. He's also stolen from just about every continent. Here in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa - anywhere and everywhere. I'd almost say anything that isn't nailed down is up for grabs, but even then the Black Knight acts more like a warlock and steals what's meant to be unattainable.” Bradley explained.

“And as the average rich person is so covetous of their wealth, like Bradman said, they'd rather the Black Knight be an assailant in the night with a rifle and shoot them down. At least then their precious baubles wouldn't be taken and they'd have to go through the ringer with insurance.” Eloise added with a shake of her head.

“So, you all think that the Black Knight stabbed Mr. Sawyer and stole Mrs. Anderson's necklace?” Max asked.

“It certainly seems that way. But to think that such an unruly sort got into our party! I pray that Detective Bonkers can figure out who the Black Knight is and arrest him.” Bradman said, pinching the bridge of his nose to try and alleviate the migraine that he was surely feeling.

“Well, there's nothing more that can be done here. I say we head out into the room and address the matter.” Grandfather Lee said.

“Agreed. I'll have one of the staff watch over Lawrence as well. Just in case the Black Knight chooses to finish the job.” Eloise added with a nod.

“Bradley, I'm so sorry that the party has taken such an awful turn as this. I know you and Max had a reservation at a hotel for the weekend, but you'll likely miss it if Detective Bonkers has us all stay for a long period for questioning. I swear that we'll make it up to you both.” Bradman assured to his son, laying a hand on his shoulder.

“It's alright, father. We can discuss that later. For now we need to focus on the matter at hand and keep things as calm as possible while the detective investigates. Right, Max?” Bradley asked his boyfriend, but saw that he was completely engrossed in the article covering the Black Knight and didn't respond. So tapping him on the shoulder the Saluki tried to get his attention. “Max!”

“Hm!? Oh, sorry Brad. I was just looking at this picture of the Black Knight is all. And...I don't know. Something about it just seems weird.” Max said as he squinted his eyes to further scrutinize the picture.

“Weird how?” Bradley asked, now curious.

“I'm not sure. But maybe we should show this to Bonkers. Mr. Uppercrust, do you mind if we borrow this magazine for a while?” Max asked.

“If it'll help end this disaster before the press gets here? Keep it, my boy. The movie and home décor recommendations were God awful, anyway.” Bradman said before sighing and straightening himself a bit as he held out his arm to his wife. “Well then. Ready to face the public, my dearest?”

“So long as you're there – I can face the devil, my beloved.” Eloise said as she accepted Bradman's arm and they walked out of the study.

“Ironically enough, we have a cosmetic surgeon here dressed as a biblical form of Lucifer. As for me, I'm going to go and pack this knife away for Detective Bobcat and clean these medical tools. Will you boys manage by yourselves?” Grandfather Lee asked the younger canines as he picked up his surgeon's tray.

“Yes, grandfather, we'll be fine. And if anything comes up we'll keep you posted.” Bradley assured. The older Saluki nodded to his grandson and Max then walked out. Now alone, apart from Lawrence who was asleep on the lounge, Bradley turned to look at his boyfriend. “So what now?”

“Well right now, we go and see Bonkers and show him this magazine article about the Black Knight.” Max said as he left along with Bradley.

“What do you think is so weird about that picture anyway? Like the resolution is bad or something?” Bradley asked as he walked beside Max.

“No, it's not the resolution. Or the police or Black Knight himself. I don't know. There's something about it that I just can't put my finger on.” Max said with furrowed brows as he looked down at the magazine in his hands.

“Well, with any luck, the detective can figure that out.” Bradley said. Just as they exited from the hallway leading to the study someone called out to them.

“Hey boys!” Called a familiar fair voice and the two canines turned to the right to see Fawn waving to them as she walked over.

“Oh, hello again Miss Deer. I'm terribly sorry for the upsetting turn that the party suddenly took.” Bradley said as he bowed in apology to the fallow deer.

“Don't worry about that, sweetie. It's not like you planned for this. I'm just sorry that a guest was hurt. Bonkers told me about it.” Fawn said.

“Actually, we wanted to pass along a possible clue to him to help with the investigation. It may not be much – but I'm sure that Detective Bobcat will be able to use it to solve this mystery.” Max said with a smile. At this Fawn gave an awkward smile and chuckled with equal awkwardness.

“Well, since you brought that up, I can get into why I wanted to talk to you both.” Fawn said.

“Huh? What do you mean?” Bradley asked. Fawn gave a tired sigh and put her hands together as if to pray.

“Boys, let me preface by saying that I do love Bonkers with all my heart. There's a reason why I call him trail mix.” Fawn said.

“Because you're nuts about him?” Max asked with a smile.

“Ha, ha. Well that too, but also because he drives me nuts sometimes. Bonkers has a good heart – don't get me wrong. But he can be...well...bonkers. And I'm sure you can imagine how much he drives other people up the wall.” Fawn explained.

“I did get a sense of eccentricity from Detective Bobcat, if that's what you mean. But why tells us this?” Bradley asked.

“Because trail mix is a bit out of his element here. I may be an actress, but your type of high society is something that not even I'm entirely used to. So you can imagine the difficulty has navigating through the different attitudes of many of your guests. No offense, Bradley.” Fawn said, holding up her hands in a show of peace.

“None taken, Miss Deer. To this day even I have difficulty navigating through the attitudes of my so-called peers.” Bradley replied.

“So what do you want us to do?” Max asked.

“I know it's a lot to ask...but I want you boys to help Bonkers solve this case.” Fawn said. Max and Bradley blinked once at the woman, looked at each other in shock and then looked back at her.

“Wait...what!?” Max asked again in surprise.

“Miss Deer, are you serious?” Bradley asked as well with equal surprise.

“I am indeed, Bradley. You know a fair number of the people at this party, I'm sure. And having you around would make it easier for Bonkers to sort through potential suspects and perform interrogations. Max, you're fluent in French. And given this Black Knight character's Parisian flare you'll be just as big of a help to him.” Fawn said, gesturing to each canine.

“I don't know, Fawn. Me and Bradley aren't detectives. We may mess things up for Bonkers.” Max said.

“Not to mention that we're not experienced in such a thing. I may be a criminal justice major, but the closest I've participated in are mock trials. Not the real deal.” Bradley added with a look of uncertainty.

“I know it's a tall order, but Bonkers would have your backs. Anything that involves a suspect would be his responsibility. And of course he'd be with you both every step of the way. You two would just serve as the deputized middlemen, if anything.” Fawn said in a reassuring tone.

“Hm. When you say that I suppose then it wouldn't be too bad.” Max said as he stroked his chin in thought.

“Are you sure, Max?” Bradley asked.

“Well, yeah. Fawn has some good points. And I'll bet that Bonkers would be glad for the help. What do we really have to lose? I say we help him, Brad.” Max said with a positive smile. After taking in his boyfriend's words and processing them for a minute, Bradley gave a sigh and a smile of his own.

“I guess I could always tell my criminal justice professor I had some field experience. Alright, Miss Deer. We'll help out Detective Bobcat.” Bradley said to the woman.

“Thank you both so much! You're a real pair of Kewpie dolls. Bonkers said he was going to go and talk to Mrs. Anderson and ask her more about the necklace. I think they're in the dining room.” Fawn said.

“Thanks. We'll go and meet with him.” Max said as he and Bradley left for the dining room.

The door of the dining room was slightly ajar, so the canines carefully pushed it open to see Bonkers standing near the head of the table where Viola sat – her husband and son standing at either side of her for comfort. Bradley walked in first – followed by Max. And as they got closer they could start to hear the conversation a bit clearer.

“So you told everyone about your necklace, as soon as you came to the party?” Bonkers asked.

“Yes. But as the saying goes; hindsight is twenty-twenty. I never would have worn it if I even suspected that he was lurking about.” Viola said, clearly referring to the Black Knight.

“Detective, how does asking my wife such trivial questions help solve anything?” Joel asked in annoyance.

“It's just routine, Mr. Anderson. I gotta narrow down the list of potential suspects. I don't suppose the necklace is insured?” Bonkers asked to Viola.

“Yes, of course. Being an antique it's only natural that I have the proper protections on it.” Viola replied.

“Hey. Are you implying that my mom is trying to collect a fast buck off an impromptu insurance scam?” Gabriel asked with a glare.

“Not at all, kiddo. Like I said – this is all routine.” Bonkers said quickly in reassurance to the younger Finnish Spitz.

“Well how much longer will this routine take us? We've told you all that concerns the theft, little as it is given that everything went dark. So we'd like to head home sooner than later.” Joel stated.

“I'm afraid that you all can't leave for the present, as this is an ongoing investigation. For everyone's safety we all have to stay here.” The bobcat replied.

“What!?” The Anderson's all asked in outrage – then broke off into their own varied complaints. This made Bonkers more than a bit nervous as he tried to get a word in to explain but the family wouldn't let him.

“I think now's a good time for us to step in.” Max whispered to Bradley.

“I think you're right. You talk with Viola. I'll handle Gabriel and his father.” Bradley whispered back then immediately turned on his elite mode and strode over. “Gabriel, Viola, Joel! There you all are. I wanted to come and personally offer my profound apologies that such a dreadful thing has happened.”

“Oh, Bradley. Well we appreciate that, but really this isn't something you have to apologize for. It's not like you planned for this. I'm sure you and your family are even twice as stunned by all this.” Joel said, calming down as he saw the senior approaching.

“Yeah, old pal. Our grievance isn't with you. It's with that Black Knight son of a bitch for stealing from mom.” Gabriel added with a face filled with frustration.

“I was going to wear that necklace to the big auto show we're having for this year's new model, too! Now what am I supposed to do? Wear diamonds like last time?” Viola asked with a look that seemed as though she was ready to break down crying again. So Max quickly stepped in to calm the situation.

“I understand, Mrs. Anderson. It's not easy being unable to do anything about something precious that was taken from you. And nothing could ever replace it. But I promise that Detective Bonkers will do everything he can to retrieve your necklace.” Max said as he took the woman's hand into his whilst he gave a comforting smile.

“Exactly! Thank God there's a person who understands the utter despair I feel.” Viola said as she looked to Max with a sad smile. “If you think it's possible for my necklace to be recovered, young man, than I suppose not all hope is lost.”

“Right! I know that the night has soured for you three, but it really will go a long way if you let Detective Bonkers ask a few more questions.” Bradley said with a kind smile.

“I see. I suppose it can't be helped then. Very well, detective. Continue with your questions.” Joel said while Gabriel shrugged in agreement. Bonkers blinked, amazed at how quickly the young men had deescalated the situation, then quickly regained his composure.

“Yes, glad we're all on the same page! Now, there was actually another victim that I believe is linked to your stolen necklace. As you all likely heard there was a scream during the time the lights went out. And a man named Lawrence Sawyer was attacked.” Bonkers explained.

“What!? Lawrence was the one who screamed?!” Joel asked in shock.

“Is he hurt badly?” Viola asked with a look of concern.

“He got a nasty injury, but he'll live.” Max replied.

“Damn. Well that's some good news, at least.” Gabriel said as he heaved out a stunned sigh.

“By the way, Joel, I just learned that Lawrence was working on that expansion project for your company as one of the engineers. And as I recall, father was trying to talk to you about it earlier. But you kept changing the subject.” Bradley pointed out.

“Is that all true, Mr. Anderson?” Bonkers asked, looking at Joel. The older male Finish Spitz seemed to go rigid – his now breaking out in a cold sweat as he looked rather nervous.

“Y-Yes, well. Ahem! I mean we were talking business and the like, but we talked about so many different things. I can't totally recall if we talked about the expansion project.” Joel said with a slight stutter as he laughed nervously.

“What do you mean, dad? I specifically recall Bradman mentioning the expansion project to you more than once.” Gabriel pointed out with a confused look.

“Yes, sweetheart, Gabriel's right. You even said that you wanted to talk to Bradman about the expansion plan when we first ran into Ellie. But when he came over you just kept changing the subject.” Viola added, now looking confused herself.

“O-Oh, right. Well uh, you see...I did want to talk to him about it, that's true! But when I saw Bradman, I must confess that I got rather nervous. So I kept changing the subject.” Joel admitted nervously.

“But why would you do that, Joel? It's just a business expansion in a new country. Why be so nervous to talk about it?” Bradley asked. Joel looked at the Saluki with an expression that seemed like he was torn on whether to reply or not. But it seemed like he decided to speak as he let out a long, heavy sigh.

“Well, you see...the expansion plans are...not exactly...present.” Joel said slowly as he fiddled with his thumbs. Bradley and Max shared a look of surprise at hearing this, but before he could speak a new voice cut through like a crack of thunder.

“What do you mean 'not exactly present', Joel?” Asked a stern voice that Bradley knew all too well. And turning around he saw his father standing at the entrance of the dining hall with narrowed eyes.

“Mr. Uppercrust! What are you doing here?” Max asked in surprise.

“Alfonso and Marie were checking over to see what could've made the lights go out – and they found something in the main garage where the circuit breaker box is that they thought Detective Bonkers should be made privy to. I came to tell him, but now I'm more curious about what you said about the expansion plans, Joel.” Bradman said as he took purposeful, angry strides towards the Finnish Spitz which made him back up.

“N-Now, Bradman. Don't go looking so angry, old chum. It's not good for the face. Permanent lines, you know.” Joel tried to reason as he was backed up into a wall.

“I assure you, old chum, if I was angry you would know it. My current face is mild aggravation at best. Now tell me. What did you mean by the expansion plans are not exactly present? Did you leave them at the office?” Bradman asked.

“Well...no.” Joel muttered.

“Did you give them to another executive for safe keeping?” Bradman asked again.

“No...” Came another muttered response.

“Did you put them in your personal safe and just forgot the combination?” Bradman asked once more.

“Eh, not quite.” Joel replied.

“My God, Joel, what happened to them then!? The only other thing I could think happened was that they were stolen and...” Bradman started to ramble, but the noticeable flinch Joel gave at the word 'stolen' made him stop. He looked at the other man with eyes slowly bulging in horror, then shook his head in disbelief. “No. No, no, no...Joel. Tell me that is NOT what happened to those expansion plans. I need to hear you say they weren't stolen.”

“...Well, do I have to say those words exactly?” Joel asked with a nervous smile.

The room went quiet. Bradley, Max, Viola, Gabriel and Bonkers all looked at the two patriarchs with stunned expressions. Bradman just stood there, not saying anything for a moment. Then his shoulders shook as he chuckled a bit. Then he started to chortle a bit louder. Then Bradman's whole body shook as he let out a boisterous laugh.

“Your old man seems to be taking this news better than I thought.” Bonkers whispered to Bradley.

“Oh no, Detective Bonkers. That's not a happy laugh. That's my father's angry laugh. He laughs like a super villain when he's angry. He's not taking this well at all.” Bradley whispered back.

Son!” Bradman shouted, which made Bradley stand rigidly to look at his father. The older Saluki slowly turned his head to stare at Bradley with a manic, pissed off smile. “Would you please take Max and the others out of here? Joel and I are going to have a long, frank discussion about business. In private.”

“Yes, father! Right away! Come on, everyone, let's go.” Bradley said as he herded Max, Bonkers and the other two Anderson's out without any further delay.

“W-Wait, Bradman! I can explain all of this, really!” Joel could be heard pleading desperately.

“Oh, I'm sure you can. And depending on your answer – I'll be doing some explaining to the detective.” Bradman's sharp voice stated. As soon as Bradley closed the doors of the dining hall he heard the muffled yells of his father as he proceeded to lay into Joel.

“No offense Bradley...but your dad is really scary when it comes to business.” Gabriel said with a nervous look.

“None taken, Gabriel. Father isn't called the Hound of the Industry for nothing.” Bradley said with a nervous smile.

“Good heavens, if it's not one thing it's another. No wonder Joel wanted me to...” Viola said in a low voice, mainly muttering to herself. But Max heard her from where he stood beside her.

“What was that, Mrs. Anderson?” The Labradoodle asked. Viola immediately snapped out of her personal dialogue and looked to Max with a smile.

“Oh, nothing dear heart! I was just muttering to myself.” Viola said with a wave of her hand, then turned to Bonkers. “Detective, I'm rather tired and would like to lay down somewhere and get a strong drink. If you have any other questions, can you please ask us later?”

“Sure thing, Mrs. Anderson. Just don't leave the estate.” Bonkers said. Both Anderson's nodded and walked away.

“So expansion plans were stolen from Joel, and just tonight Viola's necklace was taken. Hmm...” Bradley said, stroking his chin in thought.

“I don't know about your boys, but I for one don't believe in coincidences like that. Also – thanks for stepping in like you did at the beginning. I really appreciate it.” Bonkers said.

“No problem, Bonkers. Fawn told us that you could use the help. And we agreed.” Max replied with a smile.

“Heh, that sounds like my doll face. Always looking out for me. And honestly I could use extra hands in this. Especially since I can't get official back-up any time soon.” Bonkers said.

“Well we may not be trained officers, but we'll certainly do the best we can. Father said that Alfonso and Marie had found something odd in the garage where the circuit breaker box is. So I'd say that's our next stop.” Bradley said and led the way to the garage with Max and Bonkers following.

The trio left the manor house then made their way towards the main garage on the right side of the estate. Inside they saw Alfonso and Marie surrounding the circuit breaker box. And at hearing people approach the butler and maid turned to see the young couple and detective approach them.

“Detective Bonkers, young sirs. We're so glad that you're here.” Marie said.

. We didn't touch a thing once we made our discovery – and wanted Detective Bonkers to see it right away.” Alfonso added.

“Good call. Let's have a look see, then.” Bonkers said and approached the circuit breaker box.

Attached to the electrical paneling was some sort of device that looked like a digital clock. And on the digital screen it flashed three sets of numbers. The first set read nine-thirty, the second set flashed ten-fifteen, and the third set flashed the number four.

“It looks like...a timer. But why is it flashing those numbers?” Max asked.

“I'm not sure...” Bradley trailed off, but then something struck him. A memory of something from earlier. “Hey, wait. I think I do know what these numbers could mean.”

“Yeah? What could they be?” Bonkers asked.

“Before I can be certain, we have to go back to the manor and talk to Mercedes and Henrietta.” Bradley said and rushed off to leave the garage. Max and Bonkers shared a look of confusion but still hurried after the Saluki.

Back at the manor house Bradley asked Henrietta to develop the photo she took of him, Max and the family so he could see something specific. Confused as the elephant was she hurried with developing the picture. And while they waited for her to do that, Bradley was confirming something else with Mercedes by the empty band stand.

“And you're certain that it was nine-thirty when you gave Grandfather Lee his medication?” Bradley asked.

“Of course I'm sure, Bradley. You know grandfather's medication schedule just as well as I do. I made sure it was 9:30PM and not a minute later before I gave him his medication.” Mercedes said.

“I see.” Bradley said as he stroked his chin in thought again.

“What's so important about the time your grandfather got his medication, Bradley?” Bonkers asked.

“Wait a second. The numbers on that timer. One of them said nine-thirty.” Max pointed out, a look of realization striking him. This made Bonkers' eyes widen in realization as he gasped and snapped his fingers.

“Hey, that's right! That must have been when the timer started counting down! But that just leaves ten-fifteen and the number four.” Bonkers said.

“If my suspicions are right, detective, I think we're going to get our answer.” Bradley said, just as Henrietta came over to the group with a photograph in her hand.

“Here's the picture, Master Bradley. I must say though, given the current circumstances, it's rather odd to be developing photos.” Henrietta said as she handed Bradley the picture.

“Thank you, Henrietta. And believe me when I say that this is a perfect time to develop photos.” Bradley said as he accepted the picture, looked it over for a moment and smiled widely. “Aha! I was right. Look at the grandfather clock!”

Bradley held out the picture for everyone to see, and they all looked at the grandfather clock as he said. At first it didn't click. But then they took note of the time. It was 10:15PM.

“Hey, that's the second set of numbers that was on the timer!” Bonkers exclaimed.

“Right! And the lights were out for four minutes...” Bradley trailed off.

“Meaning that the number four was how long that timer was meant to keep the power off before turning it back on.” Max finished.

“Wow, this is really getting wild. Who would go through all that trouble just to steal a necklace?” Mercedes asked.

“And to harm Mr. Sawyer like they did, as well.” Henrietta added.

“I may just be able to illuminate that for all of you.” Said a new voice, and everyone looked up to see Bradman, Eloise and Grandfather Lee approaching.

“Father. You seem calmer now. I take it you got your point across to Joel?” Bradley asked.

“Believe me, Bradley, if I got my actual point across Detective Bonkers would be investigating a more serious matter than a mere theft and stabbing. When your mother and grandfather heard crying from the dining hall they came to extract me.” Bradman said, looking from his wife and father with annoyed glances.

“I can understand your ire, my beloved, but making a grown man cry is pushing it. Your father just needed a slice of cheesecake with extra raspberry sauce, and he was as gentle as a lamb afterwards.” Eloise said as she patted her husband on the shoulder.

“But back on topic, as Bradman said he may have discovered why all of this happened. And it goes far beyond a mere theft.” Grandfather Lee said.

“What is it?” Max asked. Bradman sighed before he started explaining.

“First and foremost – the expansion plans were unfortunately stolen. Between his pathetic cries he managed to explain what had happened. During the time of Viola's fashion show Joel went to a day spa in Milan. And he had taken the expansion plans with him after an executive passed along the only copy that was made to him.” The Uppercrust patriarch started.

“Did anyone know about him carrying the expansion plans?” Bradley asked.

“No one. The only people who'd know such a thing are the executives and the lead engineer on the project. Anyway he had the plans with him and was having a mud bath – then a great injustice befell him. Apparently they used the wrong type of mineral mud for his bath, and he voiced his complaints to all who would listen.” Bradman explained with a roll of his eyes.

“I think I see where this is going. During that time someone had sneaked over and taken the expansion plans. And by the time he noticed they were gone it was likely too late to call the police, right?” Max asked.

“That is unfortunately exactly what happened, Maximilian. Now whoever has those plans will get a jump on both Ace Chariots Enterprises, but our company as well if they can pitch this project to a rival.” Eloise said with a frustrated expression.

“But wait a second. Joel said he was at that day spa last month. I remember him saying that before I left with Gabriel to introduce him to Max. Why would someone steal from Viola and stab Lawrence if they already had the plans?” Bradley asked.

“As far as stabbing Lawrence goes, he was actually the lead engineer for the project. So the criminal was either trying to convince him to work for the rival company on the project or threatened him to give more detailed information that may not have been included in the notes for the expansion. Either way, it was likely done to tie up loose ends.” Bradman replied.

“I guess that makes sense. But then what about the necklace?” Max asked.

“Probably just a crime of opportunity. We are dealing with a master thief who dresses in a suit of armor, Max. The old Black Knight probably isn't as logical as he likes to have people think.” Bonkers said with a shrug.

“I guess. But it's still a bit weird. Mr. Sawyer getting stabbed and Mrs. Anderson getting robbed happened a few minutes apart. Even if he's a master thief there's no way the Black Knight could have gotten from the study and out to the dance floor that quick.” Max pointed out.

“Max is right. Especially given that there's only one hall to the study. The Black Knight would have bumped into father, mother and Alfonso.” Bradley added.

“Well, the Black Knight is rumored to have a network of smaller thieves he employees to provide distractions and the like. But no accomplices have ever been caught.” Eloise said.

“In that case, we may have to consider that one of the guests is an accomplice. Would you boys mind going over the guest list with me?” Bonkers asked.

“Not at all. Maybe then we'll find another clue.” Bradley said and the group all dispersed to go their own separate ways.

Going outside to the patio, the young couple and the bobcat combed through the guest list. Crossing out the Anderson's and Lawrence as they're the victims – that left several hundred people to go through. Almost none of them stood out or had a connection to the other elite family or the engineer. But a few names did ring their suspicion bells.

First there was Mackenzie Cabree, the pig dressed as a vampire. She works as an executive to a rival company that has been trying to expand in foreign countries, but were always preempted by Anderson Chariots Enterprises. Her stealing the expansion plans for her own company and helping the Black Knight seemed likely. Until a quick talk with Gabriel informed them that Mackenzie was actually looking to arrange a merger with her company and Joel's in order to help her corporation expand. So she was off the hook.

Next was the Persian cat lady dressed as an angel, Mrs. Beatrice Harrington. As it so turns out Beatrice was at the auction where the antique necklace was being sold – and Viola had outbid her by one hundred thousand. Petty as it is helping a master thief steal the item you felt was stolen from you sounds about right for this sort of group. But this theory was shot down after Marie, who was passing by, shared that Beatrice had recently acquired a diamond necklace with an emerald inlay that had a sizable teardrop diamond dangling off the chain. And it was worth twice what the antique necklace was. Scratch off the cat-scratch suspect.

And last but not least was the otter couple of the party dressed as Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus – Vincent Morgan and his wife Chelsea Morgan. They're premier restaurateurs, and as it happens Joel threw one of his infamous tantrums at their restaurant that resulted in several of their employees at that location resigning and going to a competitor. This bad turn of business could definitely serve as a strong motive to help the Black Knight and screw over the Anderson's. Keyword, could. In a rare show of remorse for his actions Joel had used his connections to get several new gourmet chefs and waitstaff he had on retainer to replace the ones they had lost. He even got them in touch with a generous investor who wanted to get into the restaurant industry. Strike three – and they're out.

“Well that's everyone. Some luck we got.” Bonkers said as he crossed out Vincent and Chelsea's names on the list.

“That can't be everyone. There's got to be someone we're missing.” Bradley said as he drummed his fingers on the patio table in thought.

“Hey, what about that secretary bird dressed as a witch? The one who was talking crap about Sylvia and my mom.” Max said.

“Huh? Oh right. I almost forgot about her. I think she was a replacement guest for someone who couldn't make it.” Bradley said. Bonkers looked at the guest list again and nodded.

“Yeah, here it is. A name that was already blacked out. So who's this witch exactly?” Bonkers asked.

“Her name is Rachel Talbot. She's into cosmetics in all shapes and forms. Salons, her own line of hair care products and even day spas.” Bradley explained.

“Wait. Day spas?” Max asked, a look of realization on his face.

“Yes. And she actually opened a new one earlier this year in...” Bradley stopped in his explanation when he suddenly got hit with realization himself, slowly turning to his boyfriend with a similar expression. “Milan.”

“Is that so? Bradley, what else can you tell me about Ms. Talbot?” Bonkers asked.

Bradley was all too forthcoming about Rachel's history. Along with being a cosmetic industry queen, she was also known as the queen of mean in many social circles. Anywhere she went she just had to start some form of drama. Something Max could certainly attest to. And her poor attitude was slowly but surely coming back to haunt her – as investors began to pull out. She's still well off, though not by much. But stealing expansion plans and helping a master thief take a valuable antique necklace could certainly improve her circumstances. And the day spa in Milan that Joel went to was, in fact, Rachel's spa. Well, well, well. Seems like this secretary bird could become a jail bird.

“You couldn't ask for a better suspect, boys. Mr. Anderson goes to Ms. Talbot's spa, she has the perfect chance to steal the expansion plans and then a month later helps out a master thief steal from Mrs. Anderson to get a necklace that they'll split the profits on so she can continue her fancy lifestyle. Talk about a perfect crime.” Bonkers said as the trio walked to go confront Rachel.

“Yeah...too perfect.” Max muttered, looking down in thought.

“Something wrong, Max?” Bradley asked as he looked to his boyfriend in concern.

“I just can't help but feel like we're missing something. Like we overlooked or even misinterpreted something.” Max replied.

“Crazy cases like these can seem that way, Max. But when you break down the facts it's all pretty simple. You're probably just overthinking it.” Bonkers said in assurance.

“Maybe.” Max said with a shrug, but didn't feel too convinced.

Before long the trio found Rachel – who was standing by the beverage table with her gaggle of gossipy bird friends. Bonkers looked to Max and Bradley then gave a nod, and the young canines nodded back. They continued the way over towards the group and Bonkers cleared his throat to get the attention of the women.

“Excuse me, Ms. Talbot? I have some questions to ask you.” Bonkers said. Rachel looked down at the bobcat and scoffed.

“Well, if it isn't Sherlock Holmes on clearance. And what could you possibly have to ask me, detective?” Rachel asked, her tone considerably rude as she said the word 'detective' with complete sarcasm. Again her gaggle of friends giggled at her remark – but none of the men faltered at her words.

“Plenty. I could ask you what you know about Mrs. Anderson's stolen necklace. I could also ask you what you know about Mr. Anderson having something stolen from him at your day spa. We can start with either one, depending on how you feel.” Bonkers said. At this Rachel narrowed her eyes in agitation.

“I beg your pardon? Why would you ask me about stolen items? If anything you should be asking the Uppercrust's why they could afford fancy decorations and not proper security to protect their guests.” Rachel said, looking to Bradley with a pointed glare.

“Our security is top-notch, Rachel. But not even we can plan for a master thief striking in the dark. And as far as affording things goes, you'd know all about what is and isn't affordable. Wouldn't you?” Bradley asked with a malicious grin.

“And what is that supposed to mean?” Rachel asked back sharply, her grip on the stem of the champagne glass tightening. Her friends were no longer giggling and now looked at each other in awkwardness at the scene unfolding.

“Oh nothing. Just that you're barely hanging by a thread among the upper echelon of society. That attitude of yours isn't very cute around investors, as I understand. I've even heard rumblings about shareholders wanting you to consider having someone else act as the face of your company for a while.” Bradley replied, his voice cool and collected.

“Ha, ha! Really? Well those 'rumblings' are even more exaggerated than the reports of Mark Twain's death. I'm doing just fine, I'll have you know Bradley. And my shareholders wouldn't dream of replacing me. Ever.” Rachel stated confidently with a flip of her plumage. Although Max noticed that only a few of the feathers behind her head were out unlike earlier when they were all down.

Wait a second, the freshman thought. Could it be...? No. That's too wild an assumption. But still, after tonight, it's worth testing the waters.

“Oh yeah? Then how come every other guest we've talked to says you were trying to convince them to invest in your cosmetics company and even buy shares? Sounds like you were trying to keep from being replaced, Rachel.” Max stated, stepping forward to glare at the woman. At this the secretary bird's eyes narrowed in anger towards Max and she roughly handed her champagne to one of her friends as she stalked over to him.

“You're acting mighty audacious for a common mutt who's only been here for one night, Maxie. Just because you're Bradley's boy toy doesn't mean your place in the world has changed.” Rachel said as she practically stabbed a manicured nail into Max's chest.

“You bitch...!” Bradley growled and started to approach the woman but Max held up his hand to stop his boyfriend.

“It's alright, Brad. No need to waste your strength on someone like Talbot here. Even a common mutt like me recognizes her type. All squawk and no peck.” Max said with a smug smile.

“What!?” Rachel asked in a demanding shriek while her friends all gasped at Max's comment.

“You heard me. You're just a little canary trying to act like a big vulture. My place in the world won't change from this night, sure. And I'm quite happy about where I stand. But at least I don't throw my weight around like some uppity broad who wouldn't know manners if it made her feathers molt!” Max stated, baring his buck teeth in defiance.

Bonkers had an expression of shock and awe. While he was surprised that such a sweet person like Max could turn so vicious, he was impressed that he gave as good as he got. As for Bradley? He felt like he fell in love with Max all over again. He knew the Labradoodle had a fire to him and wouldn't bow down to anyone. But to see his little macaron in such a cutthroat form. If there weren't people standing around them Bradley would've picked up where they left off hours ago in the limousine. However the Saluki's sexual fantasy was cut short when he heard Rachael snarl, practically hiss, as she raised her hand to Max.

You social-climbing rent boy!!” The secretary bird yelled as she lowered her hand to slap Max.

But in a flash, Rachel's wrist was grabbed by a new hand before she could even make contact. Everyone turned to look and saw that it was none other than Eloise Uppercrust. And while she was normally the face of beauty and grace – her face now looked like the very Queen of the Nile set to strike down an impetuous fool in her kingdom.

“...Ms. Talbot. I like to think myself a fairly forgiving woman. You'd be surprised by how many things I let slip by me.” Eloise started, her voice calm and even. But then it dropped an octave into a threatening growl. “But when you, the actual social climber who was a last-minute replacement for an actual guest, dare to come into my home insult my family and even dare to raise a hand against my future son-in-law? Those are cardinal sins I simply cannot allow to go unpunished.”

And with that, Eloise cocked back her arm into a fist and landed a swift punch right into Rachel's face. The hit was so hard that it actually knocked off Rachael's witch hat...and revealed quite a surprise underneath it as well.

“Hey, what's that in her feathers?” Bonkers asked in shock. Bradley looked closely at what the detective meant and gasped.

“I don't believe it!” Bradley exclaimed.

“Aha. Just like I thought.” Max said with a smug grin. He then walked over to the secretary bird, who Eloise now had in a firm grasp by the arm that wasn't about to go slack, and untied a rather unique accessory from her plumage. The antique necklace that belonged to Viola Anderson. “Usually you're supposed to have a rabbit in the hat. But I think this is a good substitute.”

“I'll be darned! Nice work, Max!” Bonkers exclaimed as he went to take the necklace from Max.

“Wait a second, Max. Did you actually know that Rachel had the necklace in her hat?” Bradley asked as he walked over.

“Not really. But when she flipped her feathers at you, I noticed that only a few of them were out, unlike earlier when she had all of her feathers from the back out and proud. It was mainly a hunch. And I wasn't even sure I'd be right. I figured I'd just goad her until I could make her lose the hat and see for myself.” Max replied.

“A rather risky choice of tactics, Max darling. But certainly bold. And I completely respect you putting this prissy peasant in her place. You'll make an exemplary Mr. Uppercrust, for certain.” Eloise said with a smile and bowed her head to Max who blushed and chuckled.

“Heh, heh. Thanks ma'am, but I don't think most people would like to see that side of me.” Max said.

“Speak for yourself, my Pumpkin Queen. I'd be more than happy to see that side of you any time.” Bradley purred as he wrapped his arms around Max's waist in a loving hold.

“Well Ms. Talbot, what do you have to say for yourself?” Bonkers asked to the secretary bird. Rachael, who finally regained some of her composure after the punch, just glared at the bobcat with eyes full of malice.

“I want my lawyer.” Rachel stated.

“Well that's your prerogative. I just hope he's good enough to explain grand theft and you working for an international master thief like the Black Knight on a failed caper that resulted in another guest being stabbed. Is there any place we can lock her in for now where she won't cause trouble, Mrs. Uppercrust?” Bonkers asked to the female Saluki, completely ignoring the stunned expression Rachel now had.

“Yes. We have an unfinished parlor with a lock. It's mostly a junk room, really. A perfect place for the likes of you.” Eloise said, growling out the last word as she glared at Rachel. “Henrietta! Dispose of this filth at once!”

“Happily, Lady Eloise.” Henrietta said, walking over with an equally harsh glare as she unfurled her trunk and wrapped it around Rachel's body then proceeded to carry her off with Eloise following behind.

“W-Wait! Hey, wait a second here! I'm not working with the Black Knight! I swear! That calling card was just a hoax! Let me down, I'm telling you the truth!” Rachael yelled as she tried to plead her case, but her pleas fell on deaf ears.

All except Max's ears though. Hearing Rachel say that the calling card was a phony made a memory pop back in his head. One of a certain someone who was hiding in the wings, and who he now realizes hasn't made an appearance since then. Wait...Could it possibly be...?

“Max? Max, are you alright?” Bradley's voice asked, and Max broke out of his thoughts to look at his boyfriend's concerned smile. “You were spacing out for a second. What's wrong? You don't look so happy.”

“Yeah, kiddo. You should be proud of yourself! You played that chick and busted this case like a professional.” Bonkers said with a smile of his own.

“Well that's just it, guys. I don't think this case is entirely busted. Not yet.” Max said.

“What do you mean, Max? We have Talbot dead to rights. Don't tell me you actually believed what she said about not working with the Black Knight and that the calling card was fake.” Bradley said.

“I do. And her saying that just made me remember something important. Something that I think will allow us to lure out the Black Knight himself.” Max stated.

“Really?” Bonkers asked in surprise.

“You seriously know who the Black Knight is?” The Saluki asked in surprise.

“I wouldn't say I know. This is just another hunch. But Brad, it's going to involve me going solo to start. You and Bonkers have to stay posted somewhere hidden for back-up in case things get ugly.” Max said.

“Max, are you sure you want to do that? You'll be putting yourself in great danger.” Bradley said with a concerned look as he took Max's hands into his.

“I know, dreamboat. But it's a risk I gotta take. And I actually need you to promise me that you won't jump out in the middle of things when I tell you who I think is the Black Knight.” Max said.

“What do you mean? Why would the identity of a thief make me mad?” Bradley asked.

“I know you, Brad. You're going to be royally pissed. Do you promise not to get involved until I say so?” Max asked back.

“Yes, I promise Max. Whatever happens, unless you call for me, I won't get in the way.” Bradley swore with a smile.

“Alright. Well, it's...” The freshman started.

Fifteen minutes later...

“Why, God, why did I make that promise!?” Bradley asked himself in anger as he pulled at his hair, pacing behind the hedge he and Bonkers were using for their stakeout position in the garden not too far from the gazebo.

“Come on, Bradley. Don't go losing it now. Max can't operate on this hunch if we blow his cover.” Bonkers said.

“I know, I know! But why did his hunch have to involve him!?” Bradley asked in outrage.

The 'him', as Bradley so angrily put it, could then be heard laughing along with Max. Looking up to see them approach Bradley's eyes narrowed in jealousy as he let out a growl. Max's hunch on the Black Knight's true identity was none other than Arpin Lusene. And since he seemed to taken by the Labradoodle he felt it was best to use himself as bait to get out a confession. Hence Max's 'invitation' to talk about Paris with Arpin in the garden.

While it was fairly sound logic, that didn't mean Bradley had to like it.

“And then this absolute dunce of a man said that he had his choice of any pair of legs in all of Provence. So I turned around in my seat and said, 'Monsieur, I've seen how you treat your dates. The only pair of legs you have a choice of are how you want the frog legs this restaurant serves to be cooked'. Suffice to say – I had a quiet meal after that.” Arpin said and gave a hardy laugh to which Max laughed along with him.

“Ha, ha, ha! I wish I could have seen his face. He sounds like he was just as big of a creep as this one guy I almost had a date with back at my college.” Max replied.

“Tsk, tsk. A crude scoundrel was giving you issues ma petite poupée de chiffon? If I was an instructor at your university, I would have dealt with such a fellow soundly and swiftly. I don't take kindly to my countrymen being mistreated. Especially ones as enchanting as yourself.” Arpin said with a smile and gave a wink to Max who looked away with a blush.

“Aw, shucks. You're really too kind, Monsieur Lusene.” Max said.

“Please, mon cher, do call me Arpin. I'm a firm believer that dancing is a special form of intimacy. And as we've partaken in a nice foxtrot – I'd say we're well past formalities.” Arpin said as he took Max's hand and twirled him around before pulling him close.

“That slick, sleazy bas...!” Bradley's curse was cut off by Bonkers who covered his mouth and shushed him.

“Alright then...Arpin. Would you mind if we sat down? My feet are killing me after the night I had.” Max said as he pulled away to go and sit inside the gazebo.

“Ah yes! I understand that you and Monsieur Uppercrust assisted Detective Bonkers in apprehending the culprit who stole Madame Anderson's necklace. To think that it was an embittered guest who was trying to supplement her lifestyle. So shameful.” Arpin said as he took a seat beside Max.

“Yeah, it sure was. But at least Mrs. Anderson got her necklace back. She was very grateful about it. Still, there's one last thing we need to sort out.” Max said.

“Oh? And what would that be?” Arpin asked.

“The Black Knight. We think he's in disguise at the party as one of the guests, and that he may have stolen some important plans from Mr. Anderson last month on top of stabbing another guest here.” Max replied. Looking over to Arpin, he saw that same expression on his face that he had while he was hidden behind the band stand. A face of anger. Almost as if he took personal offense to what Max had said.

“I see. Well Maximilian...” Arpin started to say but Max tapped him teasingly on the nose.

“Ah, ah, ah! I'm being casual with you, now you have to be casual with me Arpin. It's just Max.” The Labradoodle said as he gave a little wink.

Bradley growled so deeply at the display that Bonkers' hand, which was still covering his mouth, started to tremor which went up his arm and straight into his teeth causing them to chatter. So he had to cover his own mouth with his free hand. Arpin, meanwhile, chuckled and nodded in agreement.

“Very well then. Max, while that is definitely one...theory to work with, I must say that it isn't entirely sound. And I can't completely agree with it.” Arpin said.

“Really? What about the theory makes it unsound to you, Arpin?” Max asked with a curious look.

“Because it's simply impossible for Le Chevalier Noir to have acted in such a way, mon cher. He may a be a thief, but he is a gentleman above all else. And a gentleman never uses violence if he can avoid it. Further more – Le Chevalier Noir doesn't partake in something as coarse and as shady as industrial espionage. Whoever is using his name is obviously framing him.” Arpin said, his face full of fiery passion as he spoke.

“How interesting. I didn't realize you were such an expert on the Black Knight, Arpin.” Max said.

“I am rather, how do you say, well read on the man. And I simply cannot abide someone being misrepresented. Even if they are a thief.” The pointer stated. Max stared silently at the older dog before he gave a smile and nodded.

“That's understandable. It sucks when people stretch the truth about you.” Max said.

At this, Arpin blinked in surprise then looked squarely at Max.

Je vous demande pardon? What do you mean?” Arpin asked.

“I mean, I'd be mad same as you if someone lied about me and said I did something when I didn't.” Max stated, smile still on his face. At this Arpin blinked again before letting out another hardy laugh.

“Ha, ha, ha, ha! Dear Max, I believe that your night as an impromptu detective has put your mind in a tailspin. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that you were implying that I was Le Chevalier Noir.” Arpin said.

“That's exactly what I'm implying, Arpin. And after talking with you, I'm now confident that you are.” Max stated with crossed arms. The older dog was silent for a moment. Then his smile turned into a serious expression.

“Is that so? What exactly have I said to make you come to such a conclusion? Surely not because I spoke in defense of Le Chevalier Noir.” Arpin said.

“No, although that was part of it. But the main thing that tipped me off was how you acted when I read that fake calling card that was on Mrs. Anderson. I saw you hiding behind the band stand after we rushed over when she saw her necklace was stolen. And when I read from it, you looked pretty angry at the notion that it was the Black Knight who committed the crime.” Max started.

“Really? Is that all?” Arpin asked.

“Hardly. I thought back to the guest list when we going over suspects the first time. And decided to check it over again, and guess what? Your name was nowhere to be seen. But I guess at a big gala event like this, and probably figuring you'd be in and out after you cased the joint, you weren't too worried about that. You blended in with every other posh figure here. And when I asked more about the Black Knight's MO, Bonkers told me how he usually attends lavish parties as a plain old guest to get an idea of what he wants to steal. Often times sneaking in uninvited. But he's so charming that people never suspect a thing.” Max further explained.

“...I see. Go on.” Arpin urged as he leaned back, as if observing Max.

“And then there was one last thing. Something you told me, actually.” The freshman said.

Moi?” Arpin asked in surprise.

“Don't you remember? What you warned me about. 'Sometimes, when you keep your friends close and your enemies closer, you're doing both with the same people'. And it just made me think that perhaps, you weren't simply talking about a different person. Perhaps, deep down, you were telling me about yourself to a fellow countryman. Even if I'm only half French.” Max replied.

There was silence for a moment. No one moved. No one said anything. Arpin just sat there – staring at Max. Bradley and Bonkers watched with concerned looks as they waited for the man to make a move. Finally, he did. He raised his hands and clapped them in applause as he chuckled.

“My, my! What an astute young man you are, Max! Very few people have caught on to such little details as that and been able to figure me out.” Arpin said.

“So you're admitting it then? That you are the Black Knight?” Max asked.

“I am, oui. I see no point in hiding it now...” Arpin trailed off, then slowly took off his half-domino mask to look at Max with both eyes glimmering with intent and that same unnatural toothy grin. “Especially since you won't be telling anyone else, mon cher.”

At this Arpin leaped at Max and enveloped him in his cloak, muffling the younger man's scream. Bradley and Bonkers immediately leaped into action with the Saluki leading the charge as he ran towards Arpin.

“You get your slimy hands off him, you thieving creep!” Bradley yelled as he cocked his first back to punch the man.

But Arpin suddenly tossed his half-domino mask at Bradley, making him instinctively grab it to keep the object from hitting him in the face. But as soon as he touched it the mask burst into a flurry of confetti, covering Bradley from head to torso. The senior felt his eye twitch in irritation and started to yell at Arpin to release Max again. But to his surprise the older man, who had turned around to face him, just had Max's cheeks in his hands as he pushed and pulled at his cute face. A hold that was far less perverse than what Bradley had expected.

“Calm yourself, mon ami! I have no intention of harming your beloved. I was only playing along with the drama of the moment.” Arpin admitted with a mischievous smile.

“Wait. You knew we were watching the whole time?” Bonkers asked in surprise.

“Naturally. I mean no offense, Monsieur Bobcat, but you're not exactly as subtle as you may believe yourself to be. And Monsieur Uppercrust, I've developed something of a talent for sensing jealous lovers in my time. So I noticed you first before the detective.” The pointer said with a knowing wink.

“Whatever, cretin! Just let Max go already! There's no need for you to play along anymore.” Bradley stated.

“But of course. Far be it from me to steal something so precious as a loved one.” Arpin said as he stopped messing with Max's cheeks and gently pushed him towards Bradley who immediately snatched his boyfriend up into his protective hold, all while glaring at Arpin.

“So you're the Black Knight in the flesh? Like, you're not pulling our legs?” Bonkers asked.

“No leg pulling. I am, in fact, Le Chevalier Noir. But I didn't steal or otherwise order that shameful Talbot woman to steal Madame Anderson's necklace. Nor did I steal the expansion project plans from Monsieur Anderson last month in Milan or stab anyone. Someone is using my name as a ruse.” Arpin said, now looking angry.

“Alright then. If you're telling the truth, ironic as that sounds, would you be willing to help us bust whoever really is responsible?” Bonkers asked.

“I am at your disposal, Detective Bobcat. Ha! What a front-page picture this would be. A master thief aiding law enforcement.” Arpin said with a chuckle.

“Picture...Hey, Max? Didn't you want to show Bonkers that magazine article about the Black Knight and show him the picture that you said stood out to you?” Bradley asked.

“Huh? Oh yeah! Everything got so crazy and happened so fast, I forgot.” Max said as he pulled the magazine out of the pocket of his patchwork dress.

“What's this about a magazine picture, Max?” Bonkers asked.

“Well that's the thing. There's just something off about it and I couldn't figure it out.” Max said as he flipped to the page that covered the Black Knight. And then, in that instant, a bolt of realization struck him as he looked at the picture with fresh eyes and gasped. “Oh my God! That's it!”

“What's it?” Bradley asked in confusion.

“I finally figured out what it is about this picture! Look at the background!” Max excitedly spoke as he held gave the magazine to Bradley. His boyfriend looked closely, squinting his eyes for a moment. Then they bulged to twice their size when he saw what Max had pointed out.

“Holy crap, Max, you're right! Now it all makes sense!” Bradley exclaimed in realization.

“Uh, boys? I'm afraid you lost me. What makes sense?” Bonkers asked.

“Sorry Bonkers, but we'll explain back in the manor. And after we do, we're going to set up a little trap for the one who's the real cause of all this. Arpin, how do you feel about partaking in a little thieving tit for thieving tat?” Max asked to which the older dog grinned.

“I feel very eager, mon cher. Just tell me the rules.” Arpin said as he gave a bow.

A while later, Max and Bradley met with Eloise and Bradman in the study where Lawrence was resting.

“I still can't believe you boys figured out the identity of the Black Knight! To think our son helped solve not one case, but another involving an international master thief.” Eloise said with a smile.

“Indeed. You're sure to do well in your major after this, Bradley.” Bradman said with a proud smile to his son.

“Thank you, father. But I couldn't have done it without Max's help. I'm just glad this whole thing is over.” Bradley said as he wrapped an arm around Max's waist.

“So will you boys be going on to your hotel then?” Eloise asked.

“Yep! Bonkers said that if anything came up he would call. But I think he's got it all wrapped up. Oh, and he said an ambulance would come for Mr. Sawyer. Has he woken up at all?” Max asked as he looked over to the chimpanzee.

“He wasn't even stirred. Father used a mild sedative but it seems like it really knocked poor Lawrence out.” Bradman said.

“Well, after what he went through he deserves the rest. Tell him that we said to get well soon when he wakes up.” Bradley said.

“We will, son.” Eloise promised with a smile.

“Oh yeah! I almost forgot. Here's your magazine back, Mr. Uppercrust. Turns out I didn't need it like I had thought after all. The article wasn't anything special.” Max said as he held up the magazine.

“Really? Well I'm sorry that it didn't turn out to be much of a clue. But at least the mystery is solved. You can just set it down on the coffee table. We'll see you boys to the car. Alfonso is waiting, I'm sure.” Bradman said.

Max nodded and sat down the magazine, then left the study along with the Uppercrust couple and Bradley. Once they closed the door that only left Lawrence in the room. And after a moment the man peeked an eye open to see if anyone was present. Seeing no one he leaped from the couch and practically dove for the magazine on the coffee table. Holding it in his hands Lawrence then looked around and saw the roaring fireplace. Without a moment's hesitation he threw the magazine into the flaming pit, watching as the embers slowly consumed the magazines and turned it into ashes.

“Whew, there. Now I don't have anything to worry about.” Lawrence said to himself as he gave a smug smile to the fireplace.

“Oh, I'd say you have plenty to worry about Mr. Sawyer.” Said a new voice from behind. Lawrence's smile dropped as he whipped around to see Bonkers, Max, Bradley, Eloise, Bradman and Alfonso standing at the doorway with knowing glares. “Especially now that you've gone and incriminated yourself.”

“Wh-What!? Incriminated? I...I don't know what you're talking about, good sir.” Lawrence said, looking at the group nervously.

“We think you do, Sawyer. I'm definitely privy to the whole matter now. I spoke with Joel again, and it turns out that you were pushing him to do the expansion project with a different company than Uppercrust Shipping. There was a rival corporation you felt would give more buck for your bang, as it were.” Bradman said.

“But Joel stood firm in wanting to do the project with us. He can't read the room worth a damn, but he's nothing if not a loyal business partner. You apparently didn't see the good in that. Threatened him. And Joel said you can either like it or he'd replace you as the lead engineer.” Eloise added.

“So what do you decide to do? Steal the plans for yourself to sell to the rival corporation after you heard that an executive gave him the only copy of the plans in Milan.” Bradley stated.

“Ha! Ha, ha! You guys are out of your gourds! I mean come on. I was stabbed for crying out loud! And wasn't Mrs. Anderson's necklace stolen? It was the Black Knight! He did it!” Lawrence stated, a desperate look etched on his face.

“I'm sure that's what you'd like us to believe, Lawrence. But it won't work. We talked to your phony 'Black Knight' Rachael also.” Max said.

“You...what?” Lawrence asked in surprise.

“Oh, don't look so shocked, Lawrence. You see Rachael may like to start drama, but she doesn't like to be blamed for it. Especially when she's being made out like a regular patsy. After Max humiliated her earlier, she told us how you came up to her and said that the perfect way to get some revenge would be to stage a robbery at our party. And she could even take the necklace and sell it off to sustain her lavish lifestyle.” Bradman explained.

“That little surprise you put on the circuit breaker box in the main garage was used to turn off the lights at a certain point and keep them out for four minutes whilst Rachel stole Señora Anderson's necklace.” Alfonso added.

“And while she did that, you went to the study to make a fake crime scene of a poor guest being stabbed. You even went as far as stabbing your own arm. Gotta admit, I admire the commitment. But Grandfather Lee said that the wound was so shallow it made him question why an assailant would go so easy on their victim.” Bradley said.

“You knew it was only a matter of time before Bradman finally got Joel to confess about the stolen plans. And when he did, you knew that you'd be a likely suspect after your outburst.” Eloise stated.

“Hence why you went through this whole scheme. A grand case of musical chairs. So Mr. Sawyer, you got anything to say?” Bonkers asked.

“Just one thing. You'll never be able to prove it. What evidence do any of you possibly have that shows I did any of what you're claiming?” Lawrence asked with a smug grin.

“Well, along with the fact that you gave yourself away when you mentioned the stolen necklace which you wouldn't have known unless you were pretending to be asleep from the mild sedative Grandfather Lee gave you and heard us talk, there is the matter of that magazine you just burned. It had a rather special picture that proves that you were at the day spa in Milan and stole the expansion plans.” Bradley stated.

“Really? Well, it's a shame that I went and made that magazine into kindling.” Lawrence said as he gestured to the fireplace, face still smug.

“Oh don't worry, dude! I ripped out that page with the picture earlier.” Max said as he pulled out the torn page and held it up for Lawrence to see, making his smug face drop instantly. “And if you'll look in the background, there's a clear picture of you coming out Talbot's day spa with the very same briefcase that Joel had the plans in.”

“It was almost a perfect scheme, Lawrence.” Bradman said with a shake of his head. At this, Lawrence's face twisted into mad anger as he whipped out a gun and pointed it at the small group.

“And it's still a perfect scheme, Bradman! So long as your son's little purse pooch hands over that page he ripped out!” The chimpanzee growled.

“You want it? Get it yourself.” Max said as he threw the magazine page onto the ground, right in front of a suit of armor.

“Tch. Real cute, Goof.” Lawrence quipped but still strode over, the gun still trained on the group, as he knelt in front of the suit of armor to get the page.

As soon as he did that, though, the armor raised its hand holding the mace and smacked Lawrence upside the head. This made the chimpanzee drop the gun and fall out, now passed out from the hit. The suit of armor then used its free hand to lift the face shield of the helmet to reveal a grinning Arpin Lusene.

“As I said to Max, I don't take kindly to my countrymen being mistreated Monsieur Sawyer. You should have, how do you say, quit while you were ahead.” Arpin said as Bonkers and Alfonso rushed over to subdue the man.

“I have to admit Lusene, that was rather impressive of you.” Bradley admitted with a slight smile.

Merci. I do aim to please. Now there's just the matter of proper payment for my services.” Arpin said.

“Payment? I would think that Bonkers giving you a pass to leave without incident since you didn't actually steal anything is payment enough.” Bradley said.

“Ah, but that is merely the down payment, Roi des Citrouilles.” Arpin said. Then, in a flash of movement, he slipped out of the suit of armor and dove between Max and Bradley then took the Labradoodle's arm and made a trail of kisses upward before giving Max a big kiss on the cheek. Finally he looked at the now seething Saluki with a grin. “Now that is proper payment.”

“That fucking does it!!” Bradley yelled as he lunged at Arpin, only for the older dog to throw his cloak at him and make a mad dash out of the study.

Au revoir, ma petite poupée de chiffon! We'll always have Halloween!” Arpin called out as he waved to Max over his shoulder as he ran away.

“Alfonso...Give me the gun that Lawrence had. It'd be a waste if all of those bullets weren't used.” Bradley said, a dark smile creeping onto his face.

“I do believe Detective Bonkers will want that gun as evidence, son.” Bradman said with a sympathetic smile.

“And besides, it'd be even more wasteful if that handsome face was arrested for shooting.” Max said as he kissed Bradley on the cheek. Just like before this did the trick in calming his boyfriend's rage as he rested his head on top of Max's.

“That was a dirty trick. You know I can't be mad when you stroke my ego.” Bradley replied lowly in Max's hair, making him chuckle.

“Which is exactly why I do it.” Max said with a smile.

And finally, the party came to an end in the most spectacular of ways. The police arrived to take both Lawrence and Rachel into custody. The secretary bird was all too eager to talk about how Lawrence got her involved and tried to pin everything on her. And Lawrence, unable to defend himself after threatening the Uppercrust's, Max and Bonkers with a gun, could only glare at the ground as he was put into the back of a squad car.

“Unbelievable. To think he caused all of this mayhem just to make a few extra bucks selling that expansion plan to a competitor.” Joel said as he shook his head in disbelief while the squad car drove off with the chimpanzee.

“And after everything, we can't very well start on the expansion now. Not only will it be delayed, but we're likely going to have to draw up new plans.” Bradman said with a tired sigh.

“Don't be so crestfallen, my beloved. It's not the worst thing to happen. And who knows? You may actually like the new plans.” Eloise said in assurance to her husband.

“Yeah, Mr. Uppercrust. And I think that Mrs. Anderson can drum up something even better.” Max said, looking to the female Finnish Spitz with a knowing smile.

“What!?” Bradman and Eloise asked in surprise.

“Why Max dear, how did you know that I was the one who designed the plans for the expansion?” Viola asked.

“I'm a college student; I had to do my homework. You said earlier 'No wonder Joel wanted me to', and I just went out on a limb from there.” Max replied with a smile.

“Before Lawrence was carted off, we asked him if he knew who made the expansion plans. He said he didn't know their full name. Just that they went by Dr. V.A – which happen to be your initials. That's when I remembered how you and Joel met. It was in a picture you shared last year at the Morgan's Christmas party, showing you both in front of the engineering school you attended where you got your doctorate.” Bradley further explained.

“Ah yes. I wore my pastel green dress that day. It was my favorite already – but when Joel proposed to me then it became even more special.” Viola said as she hugged her husband who happily returned the embrace.

“How could a man possibly turn down beauty and brains? Of course I had to propose before someone else snatched her up.” Joel said with a smile.

“So Mr. Anderson asked you to draw up the same plans again in time to show Mr. Uppercrust?” Max asked to Viola.

“That's right. I thought it was strange even then, since he had the original copy. It was only tonight that I learned that they were stolen – which he did not inform me of.” Viola said as she pinched her husband's cheek as she gave him a pointed look.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart. I didn't want to worry you by telling you about what happened. But maybe if I had we would've been spared this whole mess.” Joel said with an apologetic look.

“Well no use crying over spilled milk now. I forgive you, Joel. But you have to learn to be more open and honest like Ellie dear.” Viola said, gesturing to the Saluki woman who blinked in shock.

“M-Me?” Eloise asked in surprise.

“Of course, dear heart! That's why I value our friendship so much. Everyone else writes me off as a vapid shopaholic who can't think and carry her own Prada purse at the same time. But not you, Ellie dear! You actually listen to me when I talk. I couldn't have gotten a better friend if they were on sale.” Viola said happily.

“I...I feel the exact same way, Viola. Why don't we celebrate our friendship by polishing off the rest of that champagne? I think we all deserve a glass.” Eloise said with a small smile.

“Ah, I'm afraid that'll have to be some other time, Ellie dear. No offense – while the party was fun despite all the hurdles – the only nightcap we want is the one that goes on our heads.” Viola replied.

“Agreed. But we're both up for lunch tomorrow if you two are.” Joel said.

“We'd be all for that, Joel. Also? Do keep your briefcases close to you from now on.” Bradman said with a knowing smirk to which Joel chuckled nervously.

“Trust me, I will. Let's go Gabriel.” Joel said to his son as he and Viola walked to their car.

“Well, I guess this is goodnight from me also. It was great catching up with you, Bradley. And it was nice to meet you, Max. Thank you both for everything.” Gabriel said as he shook the hands of the young couple.

“No problem, Gabriel. We were happy to help. So what's next for you after all of this?” Bradley asked.

“Aside from taking a big snooze tonight? I may just drop in along with my folks tomorrow and try to get that hot maid's phone number.” Gabriel replied with a grin.

“Oh right. About the mermaid beagle...” Max started to say until Gabriel cut him off.

“No, no. Not that chick. Although she was cute when I first saw her, I got my eyes on another babe. That elephant lady dressed as the Mad Hatter.” The Finnish Spitz replied.

“Wait...you mean Henrietta?!” Bradley asked in shock.

“Sure! I saw her use her trunk on that Rachel broad. I got a thing for strong chicks. Say, do you happen to know if she's single?” Gabriel asked with a hopeful look.

“...I'll have to get back to you on that, Gabriel.” Bradley said with an awkward smile while Max tried to stifle his laugh.

“Great! I owe you one, old pal. Ciao!” And with a grateful pat to Bradley's arm, this one a lot less forceful than before, Gabriel gave a wink to the young couple and left to get in the car with his parents.

As they watched the Anderson's drive off Bradley and Max looked to each other before they laughed together.

“Ha, ha, ha, ah-hyuck! I can't believe it! What a way to end a night like this!” Max exclaimed between laughs.

“Ha, ha, ha, ha! You and me both! But after everything that happened, this conclusion is pretty normal.” Bradley said as he laughed.

“Well at least you both can laugh at it all. I feel like an absolute heel for the previous assumptions I made about Viola.” Eloise said with a tired sigh as she and Bradman walked over.

“Don't beat yourself up too much, my dearest. If tonight has taught us anything it's that nothing is as it seems. Bradley, Max, we can't thank you enough for all that you've done. And I can honestly say that this will be the Hallows Eve that goes down in Uppercrust family history.” Bradman said.

“Thank you, Mr. Uppercrust.” Max said with a smile.

“It was our pleasure, father. Now if there's nothing else – Max and I have a hotel reservation to make.” Bradley said.

“But Brad, it's almost midnight. What hotel would let us in this late...” Max started to ask but stopped when he saw the expectant expression of the Saluki's, as if waiting for the Labradoodle to realize the obvious answer. And after a moment he did and chuckled. “Heh, right. Rich family. You're probably a VIP of that hotel, too.”

“There you go. Don't worry, Max. You'll get the hang of this yet. Now come on!” Bradley said as he took hold of Max's hand and hurried off to the limousine that Alfonso had ready and waiting for them. “Goodbye, mother and father! Tell Grandfather Lee and Mercy bye for me as well!”

“And Happy Halloween to you all!” Max called out as he waved at the couple.

“We will! You boys enjoy your weekend!” Bradman called out as he waved the pair off.

“Do come and visit again!” Eloise called out as well as she waved.

The drive back into town, surprisingly, didn't take as long as long as it did to get there. Max figured it was likely because of the adrenaline that still lingered from the events that occurred. Upon arriving at the hotel the staff were quick to greet Bradley and took his and Max's bags up to the penthouse suite. Bradley gave a hardy handshake to Alfonso and bid him farewell along with Max. As soon as they got into their suite Bradley flopped face first onto the king-sized bed with a tired sigh.

“Good grief! Industrial espionage, jewel thefts used as a red herring and a damnable master thief in the middle of it all. Whatever happens to Tank and the guys in Vegas I know I'll be able to top it by far.” Bradley said.

“Hey Brad, could you unzip my dress for me? I can't totally reach the zipper.” Max asked.

“Huh? Oh, sure thing.” Bradley said as he sat up and strode over to Max to slowly unzip the dress. “I have to say, I was pretty shocked to see you wearing this. But you definitely pull it off.”

“Thanks. You're not a bad Pumpkin King yourself.” Max said, then after a moment looked over his shoulder to gaze at his boyfriend. “Brad?”

“Yeah?” Bradley asked back.

“Would you say you have a sweet tooth?” Max asked.

“Hm? Well it depends on the dessert, but I think I like sweets just as much as the average person. Why do you...” But Bradley's question was cut off as Max quickly turned around, got on the tips of his toes and kissed his boyfriend passionately. Bradley was somewhat surprised but was quick to start reciprocating the kiss. However Max was even quicker and pulled away from the senior with a teasing smile.

“Since we had so many tricks tonight, I thought maybe you'd like...a little treat.” Max said in a teasing voice as he sashayed to the bathroom, slowly peeling off the unzipped dress before he quickly ducked into the bathroom and tossed out the arm warmers, shoes, leggings and finally the dress along with a pair of thong underwear. The freshman then peeked his head out of the bathroom and gave a seductive wink. “Well? It's almost the witching hour. Don't you want your candy, dreamboat?”

“...” Bradley didn't respond at first. Just hurriedly removed his costume with a force that almost ripped it, as he dove into the bathroom with Max and took him into his arms. “You know, my little macaron, you make me have a whole new appreciation for sweets.”

With that – the bathroom door closed. The muffled combination of moans and the shower running bouncing against the other side of the door. Suffice to say, it was a very Happy Halloween for Bradley and Max.

Headcanon Notes:

Bradley's Family = I got tired of seeing Bradley being given the stereotypical abusive and neglectful rich family/parents. I wanted him to have a happy family life! With Bradman Uppercrust, I was inspired by the iconic clumsiness of the famous Inspector Clouseau from the original Pink Panther movie franchise and wanted to make him a mix of a man who pulled himself up by his bootstraps while also adapting to the new tools of the modern times as well as having the intelligence to make new tools. For Eloise Uppercrust the late actress Bette Davis served as her road map, and I gave her the competitive spirit and athletic prowess that's present in Bradley. Grandfather Lee was inspired by Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock Holmes from the CBS show Elementary and is basically an elderly version of that. I really adored that show and watched it from the pilot to the series finale. I highly recommend it. Last but by no means least Mercy Uppercrust was inspired in part by Nancy Drew and Wednesday Addams - classy girl who has weird hobbies and a mischievous side you wouldn't expect but her family loves her all the same.

Bradley's Butler = I was inspired by Alfred Pennyworth, everyone's favorite steadfast and sarcastic butler, and also Wadsworth from the 1985 comedy/thriller movie Clue based on the board game of the same name. The reason why I picked the Mexican Hairless Dog for Alfonso was because it's actually my third favorite dog breed. So really it was just favoritism, lol. I just wanted to highlight this rarer breed and spread some canine knowledge.

Arpin Lusene & his dog breed = Created by the famous comic writer and illustrator Don Rosa who has brought us many of the iconic Mickey Mouse characters we adore, Arpin Lusene is a parody of Maurice Leblanc's famous gentleman thief Arsene Lupin. However instead of being called "the Wolf" for an alias he is instead called Le Chevalier Noir, which is French for "the Black Knight". The dog breed that I picked for Arpin is the Braque d'Auvergne Pointer. This is a French dog breed that originates in the Cantal Region of France and is a versatile gundog(bird dog/hunting dog) that any hunter would be proud to have. What better canine to choose for a master thief than a dog that's bred to be quick on its paws?

"Know him? Why I as the lad's vocal coach, once upon a time." = I headcanon that Grandfather Lee was a vocal coach in his youth and was Powerline's instructor.

Max being half French = Since Max is a Labradoodle, he gets his poodle side from his late mother who was also French.

References Notes:

"Just don't let Federico anywhere near a poker table. We don't need a repeat of what happened last time in that card game in Memphis." = This is a reference to a series of sixteen oil paintings made by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, who was commissioned by Brown & Bigelow in 1903 to advertise cigars. Hence his passion for drawing dogs with cigars and his famous series of paintings.

House of Mouse = A reference to the show of the same name. Little does Bradley know this club also belongs to Max's godfather Mickey Mouse.

"To make sure that you're the real Max Goof, and that no doppelganger aliens pulled a fast one on me." = This is a reference to the 1956 science-fiction/horror film Invasion of The Body Snatchers.

The senior came off as the type who would have the same model of car as the spy from that novel series, and he'd probably have it tricked out with all of the gadgets too. = This is a reference to James Bond aka Agent 007, who was created by British novelist Ian Fleming, and his love for the famous British luxury car brand Aston Martin. In particular the Vanquish model was a primary vehicle with an invisibility/cloaking feature in the 2002 James Bond movie Die Another Day, starring Pierce Brosnan as Agent 007 and Halle Berry as his Bond Girl of that film Jinx Johnson.

"A boy and his father crashed the performance, but they actually wound up making it grander". = This is a reference to the first Goofy Movie.

And they actually reminded Max of the dancing figurines in the music box from the movie about that lost princess. = This is a reference to the Don Bluth Anastasia(1997) film and the music box that Anya's grandmother gives her that has the dancing figurines inside.

A tune from an old movie series he used to watch growing up with his dad about a clumsy detective and a huge pink diamond. = This is a reference to the Pink Panther film franchise.

Translation Notes:

"C'est un plaisir de vous rencontrer, Monsieur Lusene." = "A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Lusene."

"Bonsoir, Roi des Citrouilles." = "Good evening, Pumpkin King."

"Ma petite poupée de chiffon." = "My little ragdoll."

"Plaga demasiado confiada." = "Overconfident pest."

"Damas y caballeros." = "Ladies and gentlemen."

"Je vous demande pardon?" = "I beg your pardon?"
