Vax wonders when the last time he slept this well was. Perhaps when the group first gained their keep, when it felt like he and Vex finally had a home for the first time since Byroden. When the stress of battle from slaying the dragon had worn away. Before this new trouble had started. Before the Raven Queen, before all of it.
Despite preferring the cover of night, Vax has always been an early riser. He thinks it’s largely due to being on the move so often in his life.
Keyleth, as it turns out, is not.
He’s well awake now as he feels Keyleth’s measured breath against his neck. She’s sound asleep, snoring quietly. He feels her hands wrapped around his waist. He’s never been happier.
Vax is careful to turn around in her sleepy grasp, facing her. He studies her face. Her mouth is slightly agape, drool collecting at the corner of her lips. Her freckles are lit up by the morning sun and her hair flows on the bed behind her like sea of red. She looks perfectly, wonderfully, beautifully silly, he thinks.
Vax watches her for a few minutes more before her snores turn into incoherent mumbling. Her brow sets, her nose scrunches.
“Hey,” he says quietly, “morning, Kiki.”
Vax sees her turn onto her back to lazily stretch. Her eyes stay closed as she settles back in. “Mmm… morning,” she says blearily.
He gives her a few moments to wake up, but when it’s clear her intent is to fall right back to sleep, he reaches over and sets a kiss to her forehead, “It’s time to wake up. We have to leave in a few hours.”
Keyleth digs her face into the pillows with a groan, “Nooo, too sleepy.”
Vax laughs at her muffled declaration. “Come on.” He props himself up on his elbow and leans over. Presses one kiss to her exposed cheek. Another to her chin. Where her ear and jaw intersects. The curve of her neck. He watches her face bloom red instantly, a small satisfied smile settling on his face.
She peaks half of her face out from under the pillow. Her eye narrows at him, “I know what you’re doing.”
“Don’t know what you’re talking about,” Vax replies, kissing down the length of her neck.
Keyleth brings her face out from under the pillow fully, a large smile blossoming across her face.
“Okay, okay. I think I’m awake now,” she laughs under his touch. Vax hoists himself up to press his lips to hers. He feels Keyleth’s hand slip into his hair, gently pulling him in closer. It’s slow and unhurried.
They break apart, and Keyleth settles back in. “Mmm… That was good. Last night was good, right? I think we’ll have to practice a lot more. Yeah, we will… You know, I’m sorry I got freaked out by your tongue when we first kissed…”
Vax is already back to her neck, causing Keyleth to lose her train of thought further. The half-elf laughs against her pulse point, his breath warm and sending shivers down Keyleth’s spine, “I’m not going to argue with that.”
They fall into a comfortable rhythm, with Vax slowly moving down her body. Her breasts, her stomach, down to her apex of her legs. He nips at her inner thighs and looks up to her for confirmation. The druid is flushed red, but she nods, smiling.
With her legs lifted over his shoulders, Vax begins to move closer when they both freeze, a knock resonating at the door. Their eyes dart to it, then back at one another. That’s when Vax hears his sister’s distinct voice.
“Keyleth, we’re leaving soon. Get up.” Vex punctuates her words with another knock.
Keyleth’s expression shoots up in alarm. Vax is still slotted between her thighs. He looks like he’s about to break out into laughter at her stressed visage.
“Don’t!” She whisper-yells, trying to reach for Vax’s grinning mouth to slap her hand over it. She knows he’ll laugh. He knows he’s about to laugh. The awkward angle of her legs propped up on his shoulders makes it difficult for her to reach him. Vax peels himself out from under her and draws himself back up.
“Keyleth, answer this door, or I swear—“
“Coming!” She calls back in a tone that’s all too high pitched, all too nervous, even for her. “One second! I-I just need a minute!”
Vax leans over her, pressing one last kiss, Keyleth responds by opening her mouth and pressing up into him. As soon as it starts though, Vax is off of her, leaving her dazed and dizzy.
“Well, answer the door, Kiki,” he says smugly. There’s a glimmer of amusement in his dark eyes. Keyleth’s head is reeling.
“Right, uh, yeah.” She tries clearing her throat, pushing herself off the bed. Vax is no where to be seen, likely hiding in the shadows of her room. She grabs her robe and throws it on.
Keyleth throws the door open a bit too aggressively. Vex's is on the other side, knuckle raised to rap against the door again.
Keyleth is flustered, more than flustered really, if she starts thinking about it too hard… and knows she looks a mess. She puts on an excessive smile. “Hey, hi, Vex!” she says a bit too loudly. “I, um, just woke up. Yeah, I was going to be down soon.”
“Really,” Vex says, almost unconvinced. “Well, we hadn’t seen you downstairs yet. My brother and Scanlan aren’t down there, either.”
“Oh, yeah?” Keyleth asks, humming uncomfortably. “I just woke up late, that’s all.”
“I see,” Vex replies, giving the druid a look. She crosses her arms. “You haven’t happen to seen Vax this morning, have you? He wasn’t in his room when I knocked.”
Keyleth swallows, hard. She sees Vex’s eyes track the movement of her throat. “Me? Seen Vax? No, no… I haven’t seen him at all this morning. I didn’t see him last night, either!” Her voice squeaks and it takes all her strength not to slap her forehead in embarrassment.
“Right,” Vex says, narrowing her eyes. “Well, if you see him before you come down, send him my way.” She waves her hand, almost as if to dismiss their conversation. The twin begins to turn away.
“Oh, and Keyleth?”
“Yes?” She asks, fighting the urge to jump out of her skin.
Vex gives her an innocent expression. “You have a little something. Right there.” Vex taps her neck once. “Looks like it might require a little… attention.”
Keyleth’s face goes flat. “Oh, uh, okay.” She looks down at her throat, seeing the start of a bruise forming. She coughs once. “Thanks… Vex.”
“Of course, darling!” Vex’s tone is cheerful and she flashes the druid a smile before walking down the corridor.
Keyleth shuts the door, mortified. Immediately, Vax is on her, laughing.
“The look on your face, Kiki!” He wraps his arms around her waist, pulling her close. He kisses her once, her frown still in place.
“Oh, come on, my sister doesn’t care. I saw Percy walk out of their room… nothing can be worse than that.” Vax grimaces. He takes Keyleth by the shoulders. “Kiki, I promise it’s okay.”
“Still embarrassing,” she sighs. “We should get going though.”
She begins to shoo Vax towards the door before a wait, my clothes! causes her to shake her head and let him gather his things.
Vax slides up to the door, but before he can beat her, Keyleth reaches up to kiss him gently, a small smile left behind on her face when they break apart. Vax feels giddy.
Keyleth opens the door and does a quick once-over of the hall, swiveling her head around. “All clear,” she says, as if they’re on some sort of stealth mission.
“I’ll see you downstairs,” Vax slips out the room, getting ready to go to his to retrieve his armor.
Just as he is about to open his door, he hears the familiar pattern of his sister’s foot steps. He freezes in place, hand on the knob.
“Really, brother?” Vex asks, amused.
“What can I say,” he shrugs, “you always know when to catch me, Stubby.”
