The Color Blue

Summary:

"It all happened so fast.

One minute Murdock had Peter on the bridge, the next he just tossed him off like it was nothing.

Like Peter was nothing."

We all know the classic story. Gwen Stacy dies because she loves Peter Parker.
But what if it was the other way around? What if Peter fell instead?
This is a short little snippet exploring that.

Work Text:

In a world of color, blue was all she could see.

Blue swirled along the cityscape as she looked down over New York, her tears soaking her mask from the inside as the storm fell on the outside.

Of course it would be raining on a night like this.

She had denied it, over and over again she had denied her feelings for him. Out of ignorance or fear, she wasn't sure, but she knew in this moment that she should have told him the truth.

She loved him as a best friend, and probably more. A harsh sob wracked her body when she realized that she may never get the chance to find out for sure. She may never get the chance to tell him the truth about why she had blown him off so many times.

Maybe she never would.

It all happened so fast.

One minute Murdock had Peter on the bridge, the next he just tossed him off like it was nothing.

Like Peter was nothing.

The moment was burned into her memory, repeating over and over again in her mind.

She kicked Murdock out of the way, leaping off the bridge right after him.

It was raining.

He was soaked through, his hair dripping and his glasses covered in little rain drops.

He looked up at her, his hand outstretched, waiting for her to catch him.

The fear in his eyes. The recognition as she called his name.

The hope.

But she wasn't fast enough. She was momentarily relieved as her web shot through the air and grabbed his chest. As she shot another web to the bridge, holding it with her other hand, she could feel the weight as she began to catch him.

She could feel the rope go taught before the terrible bounce it gave.

She could hear the snap.

Looking down in horror, she could see his arms out at his sides, his head tilted to the gray sky.

She didn't care about Murdock's glee from watching her suffer, or the booming thunder that sounded in the distance.

Dropping to the ground, she pulled the webbing loose, gently setting him to the ground as she kneeled in front of him, wiping the water from his cheeks.

"Peter? Peter, please...."

He was so still, she couldn't even tell if he was breathing.

She didn't have time to check as the sirens pounded in her ears.

Letting out a choked cry, she leaned down to set her forehead against his.

"I'm so sorry."

She left him there, lying unconscious in the rain. Lying there because of her.

She curled in on herself, pulling her knees to her chest as she looked down at the lights, streaked with blue.

"Please be okay."

Notes:

I hope you guys enjoyed <3 thank you for reading!
Idk why I like writing such sad things. I should probably go to therapy-

Ahem, anyway ::)
I'm considering possibly writing a longer fic based around this idea. More of a slow burn romance between them. I love a good friends to lovers laced with tragedy.
Lmk if you enjoyed this, or if the idea of a longer version sounds interesting!
