Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

A war lasted several years, before it was finally put to a stop. A human, who had figured out how to absorb a monster soul, used their newfound power to lock the Monsters away under Mount Ebott, creating a barrier to keep them away. Hopefully forever. Unfortunately, that didn’t come without complications. A human got trapped with the monsters, a little nine year old. Their name was Chara.

They were scared for their life, not knowing what the monsters would do to her once they found her. She wandered, and found themself running into the king’s son, Asriel. He was ten, and just as frightened to see Chara as they were to see him. But… that unexpected meet led to something far greater than either of them anticipated. After getting to know each other, Asriel finally brought Chara to his father, Asgore, king of the Underground.

He stared at Chara for a few seconds, before greeting her. And soon, Chara was part of the royal family. Everything was going well. But, fate had other things planned. Earthquakes were starting to make the Underground collapse. Asgore ordered for all monsters to start learning how structures work, and when an earthquake uncovered metals, Asgore ordered for the metal to be used. That’s when the monsters discovered steam power.

Things were going well, the Underground was being kept up, and
the earthquakes became less frequent. But, what's a story without some tragedy, right? Asriel and Chara were playing by a patch of yellow flowers, and decided to sit down for a bit and make each other crowns.

Neither of them noticed the rocks falling to the ground, or the way the
ground started vibrating until much too late. They both got buried in rocks. The king and queen, Asgore and Toriel, were heartbroken. The kingdom, mourning the loss of the two heirs. After that, Asgore wanted support beams to be built twice as fast so they could be built. Toriel… Toriel ran, stuck in the depression of losing her two children. That left Asgore… alone. He stopped coming out of the castle, ordering for Undyne to take charge of the Underground, and putting Alphys in charge of watching how the building goes. After a bit, Asgore confronted Alphys, asking if she could work on steam powered robots to remember the fallen. She agreed.

Alphys, not knowing where to start, asked Sans if he would like to help, and he happily agreed. So, Alphys and Sans got working on the blueprints, and Sans pieced together the puzzle until they finally had their first prototype. While the two were working on this, Sans had a little side project concerning a pair of mechanical wings. He wanted to see if he could help the monsters escape, if an earthquake somehow opened a hole in the top of the Underground big enough for everyone to fly out.

The wings didn’t work out how Sans planned, though. The wings malfunctioned, and his magic melded them into his back, causing the wings to connect with him, and.. that’s that. Except it wasn’t. Gaster was curious as to how this happened, so he kidnapped Sans. Gaster experimented with the wings, seeing how long they could hold Sans’ weight, testing how much magic Sans had to use, and so on. The horrible thing though, is that Gaster finally got bored. He wanted to see the effect on Sans’ soul. And Sans did not take kindly to that. He lost control of himself, of his magic, and sent Gaster, one of the royal
scientists, into the CORE. With a good thing comes a bad thing though, and Sans’ soul is cracked and ruined, leaving Sans with the pieces of souls Gaster collected over the years to patch his own soul up.

Sans returns, and once he settles back in, everything becomes
almost normal. He still has PTSD from what Gaster did to him, so he
wasn’t expecting to see a Gaster bot built within a week, causing him to
fire a blaster at it. Rocks started falling on Snowdin forest, destroying
it completely. But… a few weeks later…

There was an unexpected earthquake. And a child fell to the Underground.
