Work Text:
It was a lazy weekend afternoon. Marina sat on the couch with a book, reading in silence besides the occasional breeze rustling up the autumn leaves. She held the book with one hand, and the other held a cup of tea she had made, still hot but cool enough to sip without caution.
She could hear the front door open quietly, assuming it was her girlfriend coming home from work. She didn't look up from the literature she was indulged in, hearing small footsteps approach. "How was it today?" Marina mindlessly asked, sipping her beverage. "Q-quiet.. J-just organizing b-books for a few hours," Samarie responded, still standing. Marina looked up to see her hands were cupped. ".. Ah, u-um I found something i-in the front yard!" They lived sort of out in the woods, the front "yard" was literally just the forest. "Oh?" Marina asked.
Samarie carefully uncupped her hands to reveal an insect, a colorful one. Seemed to be a moth. "Wow, it's vibrant," Marina pointed out. "Sh-she's a rosy maple moth, I found her out on one of the trees and she flew t-to me, I thought I'd show you," Samarie explained, smiling down at the tiny creature as it explored up her arm. Samarie supposedly always had a deep fascination with moths, being rather obsessed with the little, or occasionally massive, bugs.
"It has a very cute name," Marina replied, observing the moth. "Y-yeah, I always th-thought they were kind of like you, with their pinks and h-how pretty they are," Samarie commented, blushing a bit. Marina gave a small chuckle to that. "U-um.. You want to hold her?" Samarie offered, gently letting the moth climb into her other hand. "Sure," Marina put her tea and book down, holding both hands out. Samarie carefully let the moth climb onto Marina's fingers, the small insect seemingly enjoying the warmth of Marina's hands.
Marina watched as it crawled around, sometimes looking up to see Samarie's eyes glued to the critter. She had some weird natural way with them it felt like. "How long have you've liked moths?" Marina asked suddenly. "Oh um.. I- I just always have I guess but if I were to guess exactly when I b-became interested I'd say m-maybe 8.. 9?" Samarie responded, sitting by Marina on the couch. "They're very pretty. I mean I never cared much for moths before other than thinking they're cute, but some are very gorgeous," Marina responded. Samarie nodded.
"Y-yes! Some of my favorites are the C-clymene moth o-or the Luna moth! But even the Brown House moth is pretty to me, they look like pebbles you'd find at a river," Samarie rambled a bit. It was one of the few times Samarie ranted in a positive, not manic way. It took a while for Marina to hear Samarie rant about her interests, probably due to her worrying about boring Marina or looking dumb. But honestly, she didn't mind. In fact she liked hearing Samarie rant. Something about it was endearing to Marina.
"Ah I should let her back outside! Sorry, I know it's c-cold out there," Samarie whispered, supposedly talking to the moth. The little bug flew off Marina to her hand, letting the skinny girl take it outside. Marina giggled softly, picking her tea back up.
Samarie came back in, stretching. Marina was fully paying attention to her this time. "Hey come here," Marina playfully called out. Samarie walked over to her, looking down at where she sat on the couch. Marina perked up just enough to reach Samarie's cold lips, kissing her quickly. Samarie went bright red, and Marina couldn't help but laugh at her a bit. "Now go shower, you smell weird, you moth whisperer," Marina teased, knowing Samarie often had to be reminded to clean herself. "Ah yes!! Thank you!" Samarie quickly murmured, running to the bathroom flustered and smiling like a creepy ghost. Marina shook her head, going back to her book. Though now that smile wouldn't leave her mind, in a good way.
