Chapter 1: Autumnal Leaves

Chapter Text

Whose idea was it to dress up? Marion didn’t really know but she didn’t really mind as Marion and a few others had gone to wherever was closest to either make their own costumes or buy it.

Marion was one of the few who bought a yard of different kinds of fabric, a costume already in mind. The noise was unbearable for most in the house.

It wasn’t too long after the noise settled down that two people had burst into his room, both with shining eyes and one of them holding a large pumpkin.

Oh dear…

Marion was dragged to the living room by Dandelion and Naea who placed Marion around the table. Just about everyone was here… The one thing in common was that there were pumpkins on the table.

A few more others had been brought down as Marion had started working on the pumpkin in front of him. I guess the others (Dandelion and Naea, mainly) were excited for the upcoming holiday since most people decided to dress up.

Marion wasn’t going to go all out but he wanted to do something for it. At least to make Naea, someone they considered their little sister, happy…

The chatter was unceasing yet joyful.

Marion had opted for painting their pumpkin rather than cutting into the orange fruit in front of him. She was listening halfheartedly to the ecstatic characters around her, who were talking about some sort of Halloween festival that was going on sometime next week.

As time went on, as they cut into their pumpkins or painted on them, it was a blur as to how it happened.

They were all enjoying each other’s company (Some more than others, of course) when somewhere across the table, perhaps it was Jizi who had gotten paint on his face from Hyacinth being a little playful.

Jizi had taken Hyacinth’s brush and started painting on Hyacinth’s face without much of a care as to what he was doing. It then stretched across the table.

The peace was nice but they were all having fun like this too.

Dandelion was next to be attacked. Il, having decided that cutting a pumpkin was too much work, had taken his brush and swiped a streak of light red across Dandelion’s cheek, a little bit getting into his hair.

Dandelion attempted to attack back but ended up getting Marion, whose cheek was now a bright orange.

The cold feel of the paint made Marion gasp as they turned their head to face Il and Dandelion.

With a paintbrush in hand, Marion had swiftly painted Il’s face pink in retaliation.

Some of those who thought the paintbrush war to be childish, left before Naea or Dandelion could stop them… Of course with a splash of color before they even thought about running off.

As old as they were, they acted like children today.

It was a relieving feeling as they laughed in the living room, paint across their faces and clothes.
They all knew they’d have to clean it off later but for right now, they’ll go back to being teens and have the fun they used to have.

Paint was strewn across the floor, tablecloth and a bit of the walls.

Marion’s face and clothes were covered with all sorts of colors.

By the time they had settled down, the sun had completely vanished from the sky and the moon was an unwilling companion to their playful painting…

They had to take a break to clean off their skin, not yet changing out of their pumpkin-scented, paint-covered clothes. They were already messy before they had started nearly an all-out war against each other.

It was late into the night when they had all completely finished and retired to their rooms.

Marion completely passed out on his bed that night, barely having enough energy to change out of her paint-covered clothes. It’d just be a problem for the morning.

Her costume was left abandoned on her desk with his needles and thread strewn about. The deep orange- nearly black fabric had been half sewn up into a design, papers pinned up against the wall for references.

Everything would be left for the morning.
