Work Text:
Regulus feels the bed dip signaling that James is getting up now. They have a game today and James likes to head to the pitch early to get some extra practice before breakfast. Regulus is about to get up too when he hears the curtain slide across the rod shut. Sirius’s muffled voice on the other side has him straining his ears to listen.
“Okay I got the sound system set up!”
“Shhe, he is still sleeping.” James hisses back.
Regulus drops his head back and rolls his eyes. Those two couldn't be quiet even when they tried.
“I know! You just have to convince him to have Slytherin to go first and then when you go on the pitch I’ll play the song.” Sirius whispers back still at the same volume.
“Wicked!” James says a little louder before Sirius shushes him again.
Regulus presses his lips together in thought but hearing the shifting on the other side of the curtains he quickly settles back down in the bed before the curtain can be pulled back again. James kisses him goodbye and he pretends to stir awake.
“Going to practice?” He mumbles letting his voice get extra thick and sleepy like James likes.
James grunts a forced cough and shakes his head, “Yea love, I’ll see you on the pitch!” He turns to go and Regulus lets himself enjoy the view before quickly tossing back and covers and rushing to get dressed. He has to find Evan and Barty.

“No worries Reggie, we can find it and change the music.” Barty crosses his arms across his chest and leans back against the stone walls.
Evan stares at his shoes, hands in his pockets, deep in thought. “Yea we could put something stupid on instead….”
“No,” Regulus cuts in. “I want to play our own song first. We have to pick something good though and then they can play whatever they have planned.”
Evans' eyes sparkle as he meets Regulus’s gaze. “I have the perfect song!”

In the locker room the teams are getting ready. James nudges Regulus with his shoulder as he comes over to sit on the bench with him.
“Ready?” James asks as he helps Regulus buckle the last of his guards.
“As I ever will be.” He says, he can't meet James’s eye at the moment. He settles with nudging him back with his shoulder.
James leans in to kiss him but Regulus doges easily, “No kissing before games.” He smacks him on his arm guard.
James laughs easily, “Right, right, I forgot. Hey, why don't you guys get out there? I need a minute with the team.”
Regulus holds back a huge grin that threatens to spill over. “Sure. Slytherins lets go!” He calls. As Captain Regulus makes sure everyone is lined up, he brings up the rear.
James calls his team over and begins his usual Captains speech. It fades out as he watches the doors close behind Regulus. “Alright team! Remember just like we practiced! We let them get out on the pitch and then we go out when Peter starts the music!”
“This is going to be epic!” Sirius is beaming.
Out on the stands the grounds vibrate with a low hum, beautiful and haunting. The hum carries across the pitch and sends a shiver through everyone in the stands.
The lyrics start off soft but slowly build as the chorus begins. Everyone is confused at first,
“Bring the lion out
Bring the, bring the lion out
Bring the lion out
Bring the, bring the lion out”
Gryffidors stand erupts in cheers, clapping and screaming.
“(Ooh) bring the lion out”
The first Slytherin takes off into the sky.
“(Ooh-ooh) bring the, bring the lion out”
The second one kicks off the ground circles alongside the first.
“(Ooh-ooh) bring the lion out
(Ooh-ooh) bring the, bring the lion out”
Slythrin’s stand starts cheering. Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws look around confused.
“(Ooh-ooh) bring the lion out
(Ooh-ooh) bring the, bring the lion out”
The fourth player kicks off and the rest of the team can be seen from the ground. The stands are rumbling with the vibrations from the song and the students pounding their fists on their seats to the beat.
“(Ooh-ooh) bring the lion out
(Ooh-ooh) bring the, bring the lion out”
Regulus stands in his Quidditch leathers. His hood over his head. He casts a terrifying figure, stalking onto the pitch in tempo with the beat. His molten silver eyes sharp and imposing. He holds a fist up in the air as the whole pitch erupts in chants with the music.
“(Ooh-ooh-ooh) bring the lion out
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) bring the, bring the lion out
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) bring the lion out
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) bring the, bring the lion out”
Finally Regulus kicks off into the sky flying around the pitch with his team.
“(Ooh-ooh-ooh) bring the lion out
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) bring the, bring the lion out
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) bring the lion out
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) bring the, bring the lion out”
James and the Gryffindor team stand waiting their turn looking around confused.
“Well what the fuck!” Sirius snaps.
“Wait,” Marlene says, “I don't get it. Why would they use that song?”
James is partially impressed but also pissed that his darling boyfriend stole their idea. “Because Regulus is the lion.” Marlene squints at the sky still confused. “He is named after a star, the Lion’s Heart.” Her jaw drops in realization. Regulus managed to play a song to confuse the Gryffindor team into cheering for the Slytherins too. By the time the students realized what was happening their boos were drowned out by the other three houses cheering.
Peter must have been able to figure out how to switch the song and Queen starts playing but it is too late. The Gryffidors do their best to keep the momentum going but by then only the Gryffindors are stomping and clapping along.
