Work Text:
Blaze could barely keep his eyes open. Out of all the days that he could have been chosen for this patrol, today has got to be the worse one. Whatever God existed better be getting his laugh out of this funny joke. Thankfully the roads were peaceful, and citizens were actually following the laws of the road. As they should.
Blaze leans forward onto the steering wheel of the car and checks the time on his prosthetic arm. It stated that it was currently 15:45. "Which is", he looked down for a bit to do the math, "3:45pm. God, they should really add an ability to change the settings for this damn thing", he grumbled, sitting up straight again.
All Blaze wanted to do is to climb to the other seat in the front, recline the chair and take a big fat nap. He honestly didn't care if he lost his job over it, he didn't even want the damn thing in the first place.
No, the only reason preventing him from doing so is that he would get yelled at by that fuckass Officer Star. He let Blaze borrow his car, well it was technically SFEF's property that he for some reason took a lot of pride in, for the patrol. Star gave him a whole ass speech on how he should not touch anything as it would ""ruin its look."" Whatever the fuck that meant. He rolls his eyes just thinking about the whole conversation.
"I'd rather suffer than hear another long yap session from him." He sighed and then looked at his arm again. 15:47.
He slammed his head on top of the steering wheel. God, this day is going by at a snail's pace, it's like it will never end. Maybe it was because he drank just a little bit too much alcohol last night. Just a little bit. Ok, maybe a lot.
It's not his fault that yesterday was a rough round at work. Too many noises floating around in the air, multiple dumbasses not knowing what the fuck they are doing, Officer Star, and runaway villains that just won't stop running. He just needed a small amount to wind down and relax a bit. It's just that one drink turned into two and then so on and so forth.
Yeah, it wasn't his fault at all…
Blaze rubs his temples and motions his arm to check the time again when suddenly.
Tap, tap, tap.
Blaze looks over to his left to see the one and only Wonder Winkle knocking on his window. The criminal knocks on the window once again. Begrudgingly, Blaze rolls down his window to see what scam this guy wanted to provide him with today.
“Hello there Blaze. Sleeping by yourself beautiful?” Wonder gives a sly grin and leans onto the car so he can see Blaze eye to eye.
“Hello to you too, Wonder. And no, I was not sleeping, I was just resting my eyelids.” Blaze knew that that was the lamest excuse but he didn’t need to tell her that he was actually exhausted. “What are you doing around here?”
“Well I was gonna ask you the same question!!” Wonder stands up and puts their hands on their hips. “Besides, since when did you go on patrol?”
“Since today apparently. Some dumbass didn’t show up for their shift today and they needed a replacement asap. I decided to take the job because I had nothing better to do, not many missions today.” Blaze suddenly extends his arm out the window. “But dear god I did not know that this was gonna be somehow even more boring!!” Wonder snickers at that comment.
“Maybe I could help with that. Care to let me in?” Wonder strikes a pose, giving Blaze the best innocent smile that she could muster. Blaze looked at Wonder for a bit before saying anything. He was contemplating whether he should let, oh I don’t know, a criminal into a cop car nonshalontly. Would Star even know that he let anyone in here?
“….Fine, but-“ Blaze couldn’t even start his next word. Wonder slid over the hood of the car to get onto the other side and open the door and get in. “DUDE COULD YOU ATLEAST BE A LITTLE CAREFUL??” Blaze exasperated. Maybe this was a bad idea after all. Wonder giggled at Blaze’s reaction. “Whoopsie doodle, my bad!! Won’t happen again sir.” Wonder did a small salute and stuck their tongue out. Whether it was sincere or not, Blaze didn’t have a single clue. He wasn’t even sure this guy had a single brain cell bouncing around in his head.
“Ok first off, never do that again and second off, just don’t touch anything important. Star lent me his car and will have my head on a stick if anything gets ruined.”
“Since when did you care about Officer Star’s opinion?” Wonder leaned back on her chair and crossed her legs. “The last time I checked you absolutely hated that guy's guts!!”
“It's a complicated story. Besides, I know better when it comes to respecting people's boundaries.” Blaze tapped Wonder’s hand to stop him from touching something on the dashboard. “Unlike some people. Besides, wat do you know about Officer Star?”
“Oh please. I know a lot of things. Like the first time we met!!” Wonder started to ramble on about his experiences with Star. Blaze tried his damn best to listen in and engage in the conversation but his mind kept wandering off and zoning out. He decided to at least focus on Wonder themself if not the conversation.
Blaze remembered meeting this one eyed freak for the first time. He didn’t find their advances anything noteworthy and was just gonna write them off as another villain that they caught. Until she started showing up.
Literally.
Everywhere.
Turns out that they kept finding different ways to escape the ship. From vents, to bribery, and mostly just their friends bailing them out.. And every goddamn time they had to deal with their talkative attitude. Overtime though Blaze got used to it, heck even started to exchange banter once in a while. Though he’d be willing to lose his other arm then confess that to anybody. Especially Wonder. He seems to be the person that always has something on their mind to say. Even with the lack of brain cells there. They always talk with such confidence and clarity even in stressful situations. They have a cute laugh too. It’s crazy it’s almost like…
“Blaze? Are you ok?” Blaze jumps in his seat and looks over at Wonder now looking at them concerningly. How long was he zoning out for? How long have they been staring at him? He turns a slightly darker shade of orange and stutters, “Oh, uh, yeah, I’m.. I’m fine. Yeah…”
Wonder knits her brow. “You don’t look fine, did you get enough sleep last night?” Blaze shakes his hands in a dismissive motion. “Really Wonder you don’t need to worry about me. I’m fine. Really.”
“….Was it the alcohol again?”
“…”
Blaze didn’t need to say anything. He knows his silence speaks for himself. Besides, Wonder already knew the answer to that question.
“Listen, Wonder, I OHH MY GOD!!” Blaze couldn’t even finish that sentence before Wonder reached over and leaned his seat back all the way. He flies down with the seat causing his shades to go leap off his face. “WONDER WHAT THE HE-“
Wonder suddenly climbs on top of him causing him to be pinned down to the seat. It takes Blaze a moment to process and realize what just happened in this situation. Wonder is now lying down on top of him. In this car. Right here. Right now.
Blaze goes stiff and turns a dark shade of orange. He opens his mouth and tries to say something but his vocal chords won’t let him speak a single word. His head feels light and his thoughts are racing a million miles per hour. Life doesn’t even feel real right now.
“You can rest Blaze. You’re not gonna miss anything from this patrol.” Blaze shuts his agape jaw when Wonder suddenly speaks. His heart starts to slow down from its racing pace. He takes a couple deep breaths. It’s fine. It’s fine. It’s fine. He doesn’t move. Time seems to be at a standstill. The moment forever frozen in place.
Eventually, Blaze feels Wonder’s breath go steady. He looks to see that he has fallen asleep. Blaze looks back up, takes a deep breath, and slowly but surely moves his arms so that they wrap around Wonder. His heart is at a steady pace now and he looks down to Wonder again. He is slightly hesitant at what he’s about to do but goes through nonetheless. He lowers his face down and gives Wonder a small peck on his forehead. Lying back down on the seat, he closes his eyes and starts to drift off.
Nothing else mattered at this moment. It was just him and Wonder, sleeping in a cop car on patrol. Maybe that speech from Star will be worth it after all.
