Chapter 1: The Letter
The rhythmic clatter of the train wheels provided a steady background as Luke, the Professor, and Flora sat in their compartment, each lost in their own thoughts. Luke stared out the window, his mind fixated on the letter that had arrived yesterday. The Professor, sitting opposite him, appeared deep in thought, likely pondering the news they'd received. Beside Luke, Flora gazed out the window, excitement barely contained as she anticipated being involved in a new mystery.
Breaking the silence, Luke turned to the Professor. "Professor, can you tell us more about the person who wrote the letter?"
The Professor looked up, his eyes focusing on Luke. "Her name is Eleanor Hartwell. We worked together on several cases many years ago. She was a brilliant mind and an old friend."
Flora leaned in, her curiosity piqued. "I'm glad we'll get to meet an old friend of yours, Professor."
The Professor smiled faintly before returning to his contemplation. Luke followed suit, reflecting on the letter in his mind.
>>One Day Ago<<
The Professor's office was a haven of silence, interrupted only by the scratching of a pen and the rustle of papers. The Professor sat at his desk, grading a stack of exams with meticulous care. Across the room, Luke sorted through a pile of research papers, organizing them into neat stacks. Flora, sitting comfortably in a chair by the window, leafed through several thick volumes, marking pages for the Professor to review later.
The quiet was abruptly broken when Rosa, the Professor's trusted assistant, entered the room, a letter clutched in her hand. She walked briskly to the Professor's desk and placed the letter in front of him.
"Another one for you, Professor. It seems you never catch a break," Rosa remarked, a hint of amusement in her voice.
The Professor, absorbed in his work, barely registered her words. "Thank you, Rosa," he murmured, his eyes still on the papers in front of him.
Luke glanced up, curiosity sparked by Rosa's comment. He watched as the Professor set aside his grading and picked up the letter, his expression shifting from mild annoyance to keen interest as he read its contents.
The Letter
Dearest Professor,
It has been far too long since we last spoke. I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. I am writing to you because I am in need of your expertise once more. A most perplexing mystery has arisen, and I can think of no one better suited to unravel it than you.
There have been a series of strange occurrences at my hometown, things that defy logical explanation. I implore you to come at your earliest convenience. I will give you all the details once you have arrived .
I look forward to seeing you again.
Yours sincerely, Annabell
The Professor read the letter twice, his brow furrowed in concentration. Finally, he looked up, meeting Luke's expectant gaze.
"We're needed, it seems," he said, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Luke felt a surge of excitement. "When do we leave?"
"Tomorrow morning. We have much to prepare," the Professor replied, glancing at Flora, who had put her book aside and was now listening intently.
Flora's eyes sparkled with anticipation. "A new case, and a chance to meet an old friend of yours, Professor. This will be an adventure."
The Professor nodded, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Indeed, it will be."
As they returned to their tasks, the silence in the room was now charged with a sense of expectation and readiness for the journey ahead.
