Work Text:
The USS Enterprise docks at a seemingly idyllic planet known for its restorative properties. The crew is eager for a bit of relaxation, but things take a dark turn when a few red-shirted security officers return to the ship acting strangely. It quickly becomes apparent that the planet is not as peaceful as it appeared. The Omega Virus, a highly contagious pathogen, has infected the environment, and the infected are exhibiting aggressive, erratic behavior. The initial cases are locked in the brig, but the virus is spreading rapidly, and the situation is dire.
Captain Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, Pavel Chekov, and Dr'Benga find themselves locked in the gym, which has been converted into a makeshift laboratory. The room is filled with science and medical equipment, and the tension is palpable. Jim, ever the optimist, tries to lighten the mood by jokingly referring to them as the "Gym Bros." He even suggests a game to pass the time, but Pavel, worried about his boyfriend Hikaru, who is still out there, firmly declines.
"Keptin, zis is no time for games. Hikaru and Nyota are still out zere, and ve need to find a cure," Pavel retorts, his voice tinged with concern.
Jim's humor doesn't sit well with anyone, and even Spock finally reaches his limit. "Captain, I understand your need to maintain morale, but your constant interruptions are hindering our progress. I suggest you sit down and allow us to focus," Spock says, his tone leaving no room for argument. The unspoken threat that he will take more drastic measures if necessary hangs in the air.
Jim, chastised, sits down on a bench, and Scotty offers him a book to read. As the hours pass, the team works tirelessly, running tests and analyzing data. Jim, trying to find a silver lining, laughs at something in the book, but his laughter causes Dr. McCoy to drop a vial, nearly setting them back.
Realizing that Jim's distraction is too much, Spock steps closer and talks quietly to the younger man, his voice much softer than earlier. "Jim, I apologize for my harsh words. However, we need to work without interruptions. As your boyfriend, I must ask you to remain quiet."
Jim nods but, when his laughter continues, Spock takes a decisive action, using a Vulcan nerve pinch to ensure Jim is out cold, allowing the team to focus. As they continue their work, they finally develop a viable cure. Spock, ever the diplomat, goes to the hallway to test it on one of the infected, successfully neutralizing the virus.
Dr. McCoy, who saw the earlier interaction, turns to Spock with a knowing smile. "So, boyfriend, huh?" he teases.
Spock, unfazed, responds, "I believe the same can be said for you and Scotty."
"Don't forget, Wulcans have excellent hearing," Pavel lightly reminds Bones.
With the cure in hand, Dr. McCoy, M'Benga, and Christine Chapel work to inoculate the rest of the crew. Hikaru and Nyota are among the first to be cured, and the relief is palpable.
As the crisis subsides, Spock lifts Jim over his shoulder, preparing to carry him to his quarters. "I will need to do some damage to ensure forgiveness," he responds to the unasked question with a rare smile playing on his lips. "After all, we are still on Shore Leave."
