Chapter Text
You wake up.
You’re in a rather small room you personally picked out when you moved here with Toriel, sunlight filtering through the window. It’s rather barren and boring, save for your wardrobe, that’s filled to the brim with stripped clothes of your choosing. They’re all the exact same.
You’re snuggled into your new, perfectly clean bed. It’s a standard child bed, fit for someone your size. The air is crisp and lovely for this time in the morning, a perfect way to start a new day.
A perfect way for you to ignore what you’ve done.
Despite this, you clamber out of bed and to your wardrobe. You deliberate over what pair of exact clothes to wear this morning.
You ignore the power that you have.
This doesn’t excuse what you’ve done. This doesn’t excuse your actions. This doesn’t stop the fact you’re hiding behind perfect smiles and smooth clothes, behind loving families and a supportive mother. Behind power that you’ve mishandled time and time again.
…
You continue to the door, regardless. You are determined to have a nice day today.
Opening said door, you walk into the small hallway that leads into the rest of the house. There’s an end table near the white door that goes to Toriel’s room on the right side of the hallway, a couple of ‘water sausages’ lining the corners of the room and some new paintings lining the walls. At the end of the hallway is a small staircase that leads down to the kitchen and living, where presumably Toriel cooks.
It hasn’t been too long since you’ve moved here, a month has passed since you helped Monsters start to settle into Human society. Humans are the same as always, but they’ve surprisingly taken well to Monsters babbling about on the Mountain.
You chose not to be the ambassador, so it took a bit more time for Papyrus to settle things politically with the Humans. There was a considerable amount of debate between how Monster Magic should be used around Humans and whether or not Monsters should stay on the Mountain for the time being. Despite all of this, Monsters have slowly but surely been integrating into Human society, in no thanks due to you working alongside Papyrus.
You are praised almost constantly for your hard work.
As your feet softly pad down the wooden stairs, the familiar scent of cooked snails waft through the living room. To your immediate left is a mirror, alongside a new calendar so that Toriel can keep track of events. To your right, the room expands into a small hallway and then to a living room. It’s mostly identical to the one in Home, save for a few new plants and books.
Past the living room leads to the kitchen, just at the end of the room. As you head to the kitchen to see Toriel’s new concoction, you can’t help but look for it.
Stairs that aren’t there, that lead down, down, down.
Down into the basement.
Down into Toriel’s fight.
Do you know how many times you have killed Toriel?
I do.
You step into the warm kitchen, fire magic warming up a large pot of boiling, snail soup. As predicted, it’s also the same as her old Home, save for some new pots and pans. She’s been making a lot of snails lately, likely due to the new ecosystem that’s teeming with life.
It’s been a bit of an adjustment, Monsters discovering new life. There’s been many gatherings of Monsters as you show off books about ecosystems around the world. Different seasons, different times of day, space and their constellations- it’s been the talk of the town. There’s also been many sleepovers where you watch documentaries about different types of sea, plant, and animal life. The facts Toriel recites to you at night are like bedtime stories. You don’t think about it too hard.
Toriel turns to you with a warm smile, ears pulled back by a cute handkerchief with golden flowers printed onto it. She has an old apron on, worn and stained from usage. You’ve been meaning to shop with her for a new one, probably one related to puns.
You’ll take sans with you, eventually.
“Good morning, my child.”
She greets you warmly, eyeing you as you rub at your face. She notes your bed head hair, smoothing it down with a paw in a loving matter.
“I hope you slept well, I made us some snail soup for breakfast.”
She gestures with another paw to the boiling pot, fire magic curling around the edges. You can just barely see the bubbling broth, the cut vegetables and snails simmering away within it. A fine breakfast for you and Toriel.
“And, no, do not give me that look. The pie will be saved for after supper. Save your appetite for later.”
The Pie was the best item out of everything from the Underground, having more of it could save you in a battle. ..If there were anymore battles, at least.
You decide to check your new Television, since Toriel will be busy for a bit. Making your way back to the living room, you scavenge around until you find the new Remote, turning the box on with a click.
A lot of it is just typical Human production- News, Romance shows, reruns of old movies, that one documentary you always seem to find, Mettaton on the news-
You go back a channel to watch Mettaton. He’s as flamboyant as ever, posing dramatically as he’s being interviewed by a wide eyed Human with some sunglasses. The weather in the area is somewhat terrible, though, so you’re only able to make out a few words, such as “Darling, outstanding, marvelous, to die for” and so on.
Toriel makes her way into the room with a bowl, carefully passing it over to you. She sits down in her reading chair as you try to eat a spoonful. It’s hot! You eat quickly, though. Tastes like hot snails.
Toriel also tries to listen to the interview, but seems to also struggle with what is actually being stated. She tilts her head this way and that, her ears flopping along with the head movement, before she eventually gives up.
“Mettaton is quite interesting, would you not agree? Always working so hard, always posing dramatically for a camera… Why, dedication like that is something to strive for, my child! Just.. lay off on the glue, would you not?”
She laughs half heartedly as you smile.
Your smile feels fake on your skin.
As you set your now empty bowl down, you turn the tv to another channel. There’s a baking show going on (featuring guest star Mettaton, of course.) The humans are tasked with creating a sculpture in the likeness of Mettaton, and also tasting in the likeness of Mettaton. Obvious, this results in glue and sequins being used in everyone’s dishes. Everyone passes with golden stars, it seems.
Toriel seems pleased by this development, if not a little bit disdained from the ‘unique’ ingredients used. She finished her own breakfast, gathering up your bowl into her arms. She starts to make her way towards the kitchen again, before she pauses.
“Oh, Frisk, I just remembered! Papyrus and Sans wanted you to come over to their house today! You remember where it is, do you not?”
You nod.
“Wonderful! Now, make sure to call me if anything is to happen, alright? Be good, my child.”
You hop to your feet, making your way over to your boots. A day full of excitement awaits you out those doors…
You’ll just have to see if you can keep it that way.
