Work Text:
In a quiet corner of New Orleans, amidst the enigmatic charm of the French Quarter, Klaus Mikaelson found himself in a rather peculiar situation. The notorious hybrid, known for his cunning and ruthlessness, was attempting something drastically new: babysitting.
Klaus had been keeping an eye on his daughter, Hope, but today, he found himself babysitting a lively group of children from the local neighborhood. At first, he was hesitant, looking more like a brooding shadow than a nurturing presence. Children had never been part of his world until now, a world full of warmth and laughter, untainted by the darkness that often enveloped him.
As the giggles of the children filled the room, Klaus’s expression softened, revealing a side few had seen. He was not just the Original Hybrid feared by many; he was also a father who cherished every innocent smile. “Alright, my little imps,” he said, his voice surprisingly gentle, “what shall we do next?”
“Let’s play hide and seek!” one of the children shouted enthusiastically, eyes sparkling with excitement. Klaus raised an eyebrow. Hide and seek? He could do this. With a slight nod, the children scattered about the house, giggles echoing as they searched for the perfect hiding spots.
Klaus, now fully embracing his role, began to count. “One… two… three…” As he counted, he couldn’t help but marvel at how refreshing it was to watch their pure excitement and boundless energy. When he reached ten, he opened his eyes, and the hunt began.
With his enhanced senses, it was almost too easy to find them one by one. But instead of immediately seeking them out, he paused to listen to their whispers and laughter, completely disarmed by their antics. The sight of a child attempting to conceal themselves behind a tiny plant pot brought a laugh that he couldn’t contain. “I see you, little one!” he declared, revealing the giggling child hiding in plain sight.
Each round brought more laughter, the children’s innocent joy weaving a warmth into his heart that had long been absent. They were blissfully unaware of the power struggles and vendettas that surrounded his existence. To them, he was just Klaus, the big man with a kind smile, ready to play games and tell stories.
Eventually, as twilight began to draw its curtains, Klaus settled the children down for story time. They gathered around him, eyes wide with wonder as he conjured tales of bravery and adventure. In those moments, he was no longer the Original Hybrid with a stained past but an epic storyteller lost in a world of innocence.
As he glanced at their sleepy faces, Klaus felt a soft tug at his heart. Maybe there was more to life than vengeance and power. In this moment, surrounded by the innocence that these children brought, he discovered a part of himself he thought he had lost forever.
And perhaps this was where he truly belonged—among laughter, love, and the pure, unblemished joy of childhood.
