Work Text:
Sirius Black was never the most attentive student when it came to Potions, but there was something inherently fascinating about today’s lesson. Horace Slughorn, with his usual gusto and self-satisfied smile, had announced that the class would be working with Amortentia—the most powerful love potion in existence. The potion that caused obsession, adoration, and a profound, consuming passion in those who inhaled it.
Sirius, lounging at the edge of his stool, was leaning back on the two back legs of his chair, pretending not to care as Slughorn introduced the day's work. But he was watching. His sharp gray eyes scanned the classroom, occasionally flicking towards his best mate, James Potter, who was sitting a few tables away, carefully adding powdered moonstone to his cauldron. Beside him, Lily Evans was stirring her own potion with deliberate precision, her red hair tumbling over her shoulder like a curtain of fire.
James, for all his swagger and bravado, was different around Lily. Sirius had noticed the way his best friend’s attention sharpened whenever she was nearby, how his bravado became less showy, more real. James’s usual air of easy confidence often faltered when she was around, replaced with something deeper—more vulnerable, even if James would rather die than admit it.
"Get ready to have your mind blown by my potion skills, Moony," Sirius drawled, turning to Remus Lupin who sat beside him. Remus raised an eyebrow in return, a faint smirk playing on his lips as he measured out crushed lovage roots.
"That’ll be a first," Remus muttered, barely looking up from his ingredients.
Sirius snorted, leaning over to glance at Remus's potion. His best friend's mixture was simmering at the perfect temperature, a soft silver steam rising delicately from the surface. Sirius’s own cauldron, however, looked more like a swampy mess.
"Your potion looks like the inside of a troll's boot," Remus commented dryly.
"Cheers, mate," Sirius replied. "I'm sure it'll work just fine, though. Potions aren’t about perfection, it’s about—"
Before he could finish his sentence, a loud hissing sound came from James's direction, drawing everyone's attention. Sirius turned his head just in time to see James frowning deeply at his cauldron. The liquid inside was bubbling dangerously, threatening to spill over the rim.
Slughorn, who had been perusing the classroom, noticed too. "Steady, Potter, steady!" he called from across the room, waving his hands as though trying to calm the cauldron from a distance.
But it was too late.
With a sudden, sharp crack, the potion exploded. Silver mist burst from the cauldron in a cloud, covering James and—more importantly—Lily in a thick layer of shimmering steam. The room fell into a stunned silence, the smell of Amortentia—intoxicating, sweet, and heady—hung heavy in the air.
Time seemed to slow as Sirius watched James blink, his glasses now askew, his hair even more of a mess than usual. James's eyes, wide with surprise, slowly drifted to Lily. And then Sirius saw it—the change. A subtle but undeniable shift came over James's face, something primal and consuming igniting in his hazel eyes.
Sirius felt a knot tighten in his stomach.
James’s lips parted slightly, and without a word, he reached out, his fingers trembling ever so slightly as he brushed them against Lily’s lips. The touch was slow, almost reverent, as though the very act of making contact with her skin was something sacred. The silver mist from the potion still clung to both of them, wrapping them in a shimmering, ethereal haze.
Lily, wide-eyed, gasped at the touch, her eyes fluttering closed as if the sensation coursed through her like electricity. Her breath hitched in her throat, her body leaning unconsciously toward James. And then, as though something inside him snapped, James's hand shot out and grabbed her neck—not roughly, but with a possessive force that made Sirius’s heart skip a beat.
"Lily," James whispered, his voice low and desperate, his breath coming faster as he pulled her closer to him.
Lily let out a soft sound, somewhere between a gasp and a moan, her eyes closing in pleasure as she surrendered to the pull of the potion. Their bodies were inches apart now, and Sirius could see the way James’s grip tightened, his fingers digging into the soft skin of Lily’s neck.
Sirius’s mind was reeling. He had never seen James like this—so consumed, so desperate, so… not James. The potion had done more than amplify his feelings; it had twisted them into something raw, something dangerous.
"Sirius…" Remus's voice broke through the haze of disbelief.
Sirius snapped out of his trance, his attention shifting from the horrifying scene unfolding before him to the frantic voice of Professor Slughorn, who was standing at the far end of the classroom, his face pale and his eyes wide with alarm.
"Mr. Black! Mr. Lupin!" Slughorn was shouting now, pointing urgently toward James and Lily. "Get him out of here! Now!"
Sirius didn’t need to be told twice. He leapt from his stool, his heart pounding as he crossed the room in a few quick strides. He could feel the tension radiating from James as he neared, and a part of him hesitated, wondering how he could pull his best friend out of this trance without causing a scene—or worse, making it worse.
But James’s eyes were locked on Lily, his pupils dilated, his breath coming in ragged gasps. His hand was still gripping her neck, and Sirius knew he had to act fast.
"Oi! Prongs!" Sirius shouted, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife. He reached out and grabbed James by the shoulder, yanking him back with more force than was strictly necessary.
James blinked, startled, his grip on Lily loosening as he stumbled backward. For a moment, his eyes were still glazed over, still fixated on Lily’s lips, but then—suddenly—the fog lifted.
James shook his head, as if trying to clear the lingering effects of the potion. His gaze flickered from Lily to Sirius, and for a second, he looked completely lost, as though he had just woken up from a vivid dream and couldn’t quite grasp where he was.
"James," Sirius said, his voice low but firm, trying to ground him. "You alright, mate?"
James blinked again, his eyes clearing as realization dawned. His hand, still half-raised as though reaching for Lily, dropped to his side. His cheeks flushed a deep, mortified red, and he looked away, swallowing hard.
"I—what—what the hell just happened?" James muttered, running a shaky hand through his already wild hair.
Sirius, who had never been one to let a moment pass without making a joke, smirked despite the seriousness of the situation. "Well, if you wanted to get your hands on Evans, you could’ve just asked, mate. No need to make a bloody spectacle of it."
James’s face turned even redder, if that was possible. He opened his mouth to retort, but before he could, Slughorn had hurried over, looking thoroughly frazzled.
"Mr. Potter!" Slughorn sputtered, waving his arms as though he was trying to ward off a rogue Bludger. "You’ve—good heavens—what on earth were you thinking, boy? That was *Amortentia!* You could have—Merlin’s beard—"
"I didn’t mean to—" James started, his voice thick with embarrassment.
"It wasn’t his fault," Lily cut in, her voice still shaky, though her eyes were sharp as she brushed off the lingering mist from her robes. She shot James a brief glance, her expression unreadable. "The potion just… exploded."
Slughorn’s face softened slightly, though his mustache still twitched with agitation. "Yes, well… all the same, perhaps it’s best if we call it a day for you, Potter. You’re excused from the rest of today’s lesson. And you, Miss Evans, perhaps a visit to Madam Pomfrey is in order—just to be sure."
Lily nodded, her cheeks still flushed, and with one last glance at James, she turned and headed toward the door.
James watched her go, his expression a mix of guilt and longing. As soon as she disappeared from view, it was as though the spell broke entirely. His shoulders slumped, and he let out a shaky breath.
"Merlin, that was…"
"Absolutely mortifying?" Sirius finished for him, raising an eyebrow. "Yeah, mate, it was. But don’t worry. No one noticed."
James shot him a glare, but there was no real heat behind it. "Shut up, Padfoot."
Sirius grinned, clapping a hand on James's shoulder. "Hey, at least you’ve got one hell of a story to tell her. And maybe next time, don’t let your potion explode all over the girl you fancy, yeah?"
James groaned, rubbing his temples. "This is going to haunt me forever, isn’t it?"
Remus, who had been watching the entire scene unfold with a look of bemusement, finally spoke up. "Only for the rest of your life, Prongs."
Despite the situation, James managed a weak chuckle, though the embarrassment was still evident on his face. Sirius gave his shoulder one last reassuring squeeze
before stepping back.
"Come on, let’s get out of here before Slughorn has a heart attack," Sirius said, motioning toward the door.
As the three of them made their way out of the dungeon, Sirius couldn’t help but glance over at James. His best mate might have been thoroughly humiliated today, but there was something about the way he had looked at Lily—something fierce and all-consuming—that told Sirius this wasn’t the end of the story.
Not by a long shot.
And as much as Sirius enjoyed teasing James, he couldn’t deny that he was curious to see where this would all lead.
As Sirius, James, and Remus made their way down the damp, stone corridors leading away from the Potions classroom, a heavy silence fell between them. Sirius, hands shoved deep into his pockets, couldn’t help but sneak glances at James every now and then. His best mate’s usually cocky demeanor was visibly shaken, his shoulders tense, and his face a mix of embarrassment and confusion.
James had been through a lot of ridiculous situations before—merlin, they'd all been—but nothing quite like this. The way he had looked at Lily under the influence of the potion was so raw, so intense that it had rattled even Sirius, and he wasn’t the one caught in the explosion.
They walked in silence for a few more moments before Sirius, unable to hold his tongue any longer, let out a snort. "I’ve got to say, Prongs, I’ve seen you make a fool of yourself in front of Evans a fair few times, but this? This was something else entirely."
James groaned audibly, his hand flying up to rub at his face as if he could wipe the memory away. "Don’t remind me," he muttered, his voice muffled by his palm. "Merlin’s beard, she’s never going to let me live this down. I’m an absolute idiot."
Sirius smirked, though he could sense how badly James was kicking himself. "An idiot, yes," Sirius said, stepping a little closer and leaning in conspiratorially, "but at least you got to touch her neck in a way you’ve been dreaming about for the past three years. You’re welcome, by the way."
James shot him a withering glare, though the redness creeping back into his cheeks betrayed his mortification. "I didn’t *want* to—bloody hell, Padfoot, that wasn’t me, that was the potion."
"Was it though?" Sirius asked, raising an eyebrow playfully. "Because from where I was standing, you looked pretty into it."
"Shut up," James muttered, but his voice was devoid of any real bite. He shoved his hands into his pockets and looked down at the ground as they continued walking, his brow furrowed in deep thought.
"To be fair, you were under the influence of one of the most dangerous potions known to wizardkind," Remus added from beside them, his tone calm and measured as always. "No one in their right mind would hold that against you. Slughorn’s right—*Amortentia* messes with your head, your emotions. It’s not real. And Lily knows that."
"Yeah, well, it felt real," James muttered under his breath, a haunted look crossing his face. His eyes darkened as he replayed the moment in his head, the sensation of his fingers against her skin, the heat that had surged through him. It hadn’t just been lust—it had been something else entirely. Something deeper. Something that terrified him to his core.
Sirius could see that James was spiraling, caught up in his own thoughts, so he decided to lighten the mood—*again*. That was what he did best, after all.
"Look, if anything, this’ll make for a great story when you finally win her over, mate. ‘Hey, Evans, remember that time I got doused in love potion and couldn’t keep my hands off you?’ That’ll be a real charmer."
James groaned again, louder this time. "You’re not helping, Padfoot."
"Yeah, but you’re laughing, aren’t you?" Sirius shot back, grinning.
James did crack a small, reluctant smile at that, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. He was still too shaken from the whole ordeal to fully enjoy Sirius’s relentless banter.
The three of them continued their way through the castle, eventually reaching one of the quieter, less-frequented corridors. James slowed to a stop and leaned against the cold stone wall, taking a deep breath. "What do I even say to her after this?"
"How about, ‘Sorry for nearly snogging you while covered in magical fumes?’" Sirius offered with a grin.
"Or," Remus interjected more sensibly, "you could just be honest. Tell her you didn’t mean for any of it to happen and that the potion clearly affected both of you. She’s not unreasonable, James."
James sighed heavily, running a hand through his perpetually messy hair. "Yeah, but that doesn’t change the fact that I… I *felt* something. And it wasn’t just the potion. I’ve liked her for ages, and today just…" He trailed off, biting his lip. "I don’t know, it’s like the potion brought everything to the surface and now I don’t know how to face her."
Sirius’s smirk faded slightly. He knew James was being serious now, and he knew better than to tease his friend about something as raw as this. As much as Sirius loved winding James up, he also knew how deeply his friend’s feelings for Lily ran. It wasn’t just a crush or a passing fancy—it was something that had been building for years. And today, under the influence of the potion, that intensity had come to a boiling point.
"Look," Sirius said, crossing his arms as he leaned against the wall beside James, "Evans is no fool. She knows how *Amortentia* works. You’re right—there’s something real between the two of you, and she knows that too, even if she’s been trying to deny it. This whole mess today? It’ll blow over. Just give it time."
James nodded, though he didn’t look entirely convinced. "Yeah, I hope so."
"Besides," Sirius added with a smirk, "if she gives you too much of a hard time, you can always remind her that she was pretty into it too. I saw the way she leaned in."
James’s face went red again, but he couldn’t stop the small, hopeful smile that tugged at his lips. "Do you think so?"
"Oh, definitely," Sirius said with a mock-serious expression. "She might not admit it, but she was totally swept off her feet by the mighty James Potter and his potion-covered hands."
"Don’t push it, Padfoot," James muttered, but his mood seemed to be lifting slightly.
Remus, ever the practical one, clapped James on the shoulder. "Just give her some space, Prongs. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to talk it out with her. And who knows? Maybe this whole thing will be the push you need."
James nodded, taking in his friends’ words. He was still mortified, of course, but there was a flicker of hope in his eyes now—a glimmer of belief that maybe, just maybe, today hadn’t completely destroyed his chances with Lily.
"Yeah, alright," he said quietly. "I’ll talk to her. Eventually."
Sirius grinned, slinging an arm around James’s shoulders. "That’s the spirit! And until then, we’ll just pretend none of this ever happened. Well, except for the parts we’re going to mock you about for the next month."
James groaned but couldn’t help laughing this time. "You lot are the worst."
"We’re the best, actually," Sirius corrected, his grin widening. "Now, let’s head up to the common room before Slughorn sends a search party after us."
As they made their way up to Gryffindor Tower, the weight of what had happened began to lift. Sirius kept the banter going, distracting James with jokes and stories about the most ridiculous detentions they’d ever served. Remus added in his dry wit here and there, and soon enough, James was laughing freely again, his earlier panic fading into the background.
But even as Sirius played the part of the carefree jokester, he couldn’t shake the image of James and Lily in that moment—the way James had reached out for her, the way Lily had closed her eyes and leaned in, drawn to him just as much as he was to her.
It wasn’t just the potion that had done that. Sirius knew that much. And he knew, deep down, that this was far from over. The tension between James and Lily had been simmering for years, and today’s events had only brought it closer to the surface.
As they reached the portrait of the Fat Lady, Sirius shot James a sidelong glance. "You’ll be alright, Prongs. Trust me. You’re going to win her over eventually."
James paused, giving Sirius a look of uncertainty before smiling faintly. "Yeah, I hope so."
"You will," Sirius said confidently. "If there’s anyone stubborn enough to make Evans fall for him, it’s you."
And with that, they climbed through the portrait hole and into the warmth of the Gryffindor common room, the crackling fire and familiar surroundings offering a sense of comfort after the chaos of the Potions classroom.
As they settled into their usual spots by the fire, Sirius leaned back in his chair, a small smile tugging at his lips. He knew this was just the beginning of something bigger for James and Lily. And while there was still plenty of teasing and drama ahead, Sirius couldn’t help but feel that his best mate was finally on the right path.
After all, no one could resist James Potter forever. Not even Lily Evans.
###The Gryffindor common room was bathed in the warm glow of the crackling fire as Sirius, James, and Remus settled into their usual chairs. The noise of chattering students filled the room, but for the three of them, the day's chaotic events still loomed large. Sirius sprawled comfortably in his chair, legs stretched out as if he hadn’t a care in the world, while Remus was flipping through a book, though the sly grin on his face made it clear he wasn’t paying much attention to the pages.
James, on the other hand, was still lost in thought, fiddling nervously with the collar of his robes. Though Sirius had managed to cheer him up on the way here, it was obvious that James’s mind was still circling around what had happened in Potions—around *Lily*.
Sirius was just about to make another wisecrack to distract him when the portrait hole swung open, and Lily Evans stepped into the room.
The moment she walked in, her green eyes scanning the common room, James went rigid in his chair. Sirius, ever watchful, noticed the slight flush on Lily's cheeks, the nervous way she tugged at the sleeves of her jumper as she spotted them. She was coming right toward their little corner of the room, her expression a mixture of determination and—was that hesitation?
"Uh-oh," Sirius muttered under his breath, giving James a nudge. "Evans, twelve o’clock. Looks like she’s about to make your day, or absolutely destroy it."
James visibly paled, his fingers tightening around the edge of his chair. "Bloody hell," he whispered, sitting up straighter. "What do I even say?"
"Something smooth, obviously," Sirius quipped with a mischievous grin. "Or, you know, just try not to make an arse of yourself."
Remus, putting his book aside, shot James a supportive look. "Just be honest with her, mate. Don’t overthink it."
Before James could respond, Lily reached them, her red hair glowing in the firelight and her face even redder than usual. She cleared her throat, standing awkwardly in front of them.
"Sirius, Remus… could I talk to James for a minute? Alone?" Her voice was steady, but there was an unmistakable tension in her eyes.
Sirius raised an eyebrow, a smirk already forming on his lips, but he caught the look on James’s face—half-panic, half-hope—and decided, for once, not to tease. Well, not too much. "Right, we’ll just be over there, not eavesdropping at all," he said with a wink, nudging Remus to follow him to a nearby sofa.
Remus stood up, offering Lily a quick nod before giving James an encouraging pat on the shoulder as he passed. "Good luck," he whispered, grinning as he followed Sirius to the other side of the room.
With them gone, Lily stepped forward, clasping her hands together nervously. James, still looking like he might faint, motioned for her to sit in the chair Sirius had vacated. She took it, fidgeting for a second before finally meeting his eyes.
"Look, James, I wanted to talk about… what happened in Potions today," Lily started, her voice soft but steady.
James immediately jumped in, waving his hands defensively. "Lily, I—listen, I’m *so* sorry. That was… completely not what I meant to happen. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable or—"
"You didn’t—" Lily tried to interject, but James wasn’t finished.
"I know it was the potion, but still, I was out of line. I don’t want you to think I’d ever do something like that on purpose, and I definitely don’t want this to ruin the, uh, friendship we’ve been building lately. I really value it, and I don’t want—"
"James!" Lily said more firmly this time, cutting him off. She was leaning forward now, her hands gripping the arms of the chair, her cheeks still flushed but her eyes sharp and focused.
James froze mid-sentence, blinking at her in confusion.
"I know it was the potion," Lily continued, her voice a little quieter now. "I know it messed with our heads, but I need you to know… I wasn’t uncomfortable. Not really. Actually… I kind of liked it."
James blinked again, his brain clearly trying to catch up with what she was saying. "Wait… what?"
Lily’s face flushed deeper, but she didn’t back down. "I said I kind of liked it. The potion may have exaggerated everything, but it didn’t make me feel anything that wasn’t already there. I mean, it’s not like I didn’t notice that you’ve changed, James. You’re different this year. Less… less of an arrogant prat, I suppose," she added with a small, nervous laugh.
James just stared at her, his mouth slightly open, as though he couldn’t quite believe what he was hearing.
"So," Lily said, biting her lip before continuing, "I guess what I’m trying to say is… if you’re still interested in something more than friendship, maybe we could… go out sometime?"
For a moment, the entire common room seemed to hold its breath. James’s eyes widened in shock, and for the first time in his life, it looked like he didn’t know what to say.
Over by the fireplace, Sirius was watching the whole scene with poorly disguised glee, nudging Remus and whispering, "He’s going to faint, I swear to Merlin."
Remus, grinning just as widely as Sirius, shook his head in disbelief. "Finally," he muttered under his breath, clearly thrilled for his friend.
Back in front of Lily, James finally seemed to regain control of his faculties, though his voice was still a bit shaky. "Wait, so… you… you want to go out? With me?"
Lily laughed lightly, her nervousness slowly fading. "Yeah, that’s what I said, Potter. Unless you’ve changed your mind?"
"Changed my mind?!" James practically yelped, his voice a little too loud, causing a few nearby Gryffindors to glance over at them. "No, I haven’t changed my mind! I—I just didn’t expect… I mean, you’ve always—"
Lily raised an eyebrow. "Always what?"
"Always hated me," James finished, though his tone was more sheepish now than accusatory.
Lily sighed, shaking her head. "I didn’t hate you, James. I just… you were a bit much. But this year… well, you’ve grown up. And I guess I’ve been waiting for you to ask me again. Without all the showboating."
James blinked, still looking like he was trying to process all of this. "So… when should we—uh—when should we go out?"
Lily smiled, standing up from the chair and brushing her hair back from her face. "How about next Hogsmeade weekend? You can ask me properly then."
James nodded, still too stunned to do anything other than agree. "Yeah. Yeah, okay, next Hogsmeade weekend. I can do that."
Sirius, who had been grinning ear to ear throughout the entire conversation, couldn’t hold back any longer. He sauntered over, clapping James hard on the back. "Well, well, well, if it isn’t the great James Potter, actually speechless for once in his life! Miracles *do* happen."
Lily rolled her eyes, though she was smiling too. "Don’t make this worse, Black," she teased, though her tone was light.
"Me? Never!" Sirius said with mock innocence, before turning to James and leaning in conspiratorially. "Looks like you’ve got yourself a date, Prongs. Just remember—keep the snogging under control this time. There won’t be any *Amortentia* to blame at Hogsmeade."
James, still looking like he was in a daze, just nodded dumbly. "Right. No Amortentia. Got it."
Remus joined them, still grinning broadly. "I’d say this calls for a celebration," he said, clapping James on the shoulder. "Finally! All those years of pining have finally paid off."
Lily blushed slightly but smiled at Remus. "Don’t make him sound *too* pathetic, Lupin."
"Oh, he’s earned it," Sirius said with a smirk, glancing at James. "It only took him, what, three years to get here?"
"Four, actually," Remus corrected with a laugh.
James, his senses finally returning, groaned loudly. "Alright, alright, can we all stop talking about how long I’ve been hopelessly in love with Evans and just… enjoy the moment?"
Sirius grinned. "Fair enough, mate. But seriously, you’d better not mess this up. If you do, I might have to swoop in and steal her away."
Lily rolled her eyes again but smiled at Sirius. "You wish, Black."
"I really do," Sirius said with exaggerated longing, earning a laugh from both Lily and Remus.
James finally managed a real smile, his eyes flicking to Lily’s with a look of pure, unfiltered joy. "So, Hogsmeade?"
Lily nodded, her own smile softening as she met his gaze. "Hogsmeade."
And with that, she turned and walked back toward the girls’ dormitory, leaving James standing there, looking after her as though he couldn’t quite believe what had just happened
.
Sirius let out a low whistle. "Well, well, well. Looks like the impossible has happened. James Potter is officially going out with Lily Evans."
Remus chuckled, shaking his head. "About time too."
James, still grinning like an idiot, turned to his friends. "I—she—did that really just happen?"
"Yes, you prat," Sirius said, slinging an arm around his shoulders. "And I’ve got to say, Prongs, you’ve never looked more ridiculous. But hey, if this is what love looks like, I’m all for it."
James laughed, shaking his head in disbelief. "I can’t believe it."
"Believe it," Remus said, still grinning. "You’ve earned it."
As they all settled back into their seats by the fire, Sirius couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride for his best mate. James had finally gotten the girl—and it hadn’t taken some elaborate prank or flashy display. It had just taken time, patience, and a bit of growing up.
And though Sirius would never admit it out loud, he was genuinely happy for James. After all, they were brothers—and seeing one of them finally get what he wanted after all these years? Well, that was something worth celebrating. Remus and Peter, who stood beside him, all three of them turning to watch their friend with bated breath.
And when Lily finally stepped through the portrait hole, all nervous energy and anticipation seemed to charge the room. James straightened, his posture shifting from uncertain to something more confident, as he caught her gaze.
"Just be yourself, mate," Sirius whispered to him as Lily approached.
James nodded, taking a deep breath, and Sirius couldn’t help but feel that no matter what happened tonight, they were all on the cusp of something new. Something exciting.
And for once, it looked like James Potter was finally ready to take that leap. The morning of James’s long-anticipated date with Lily Evans started out like any other, but Sirius had known from the moment his best mate’s foot hit the floor that it was going to be an ordeal. By the time breakfast was over, James was already fidgeting, unable to sit still for more than a few minutes at a time. It was as if he had some kind of nervous energy coursing through him—energy Sirius found both hilarious and deeply entertaining.
They’d made their way back to the dormitory, and now Sirius was perched on the edge of James’s bed, watching the scene unfold with a mix of amusement and exasperation. James, standing in front of his wardrobe, was currently holding up two different sets of robes, his face scrunched in concentration as though he were making the most important decision of his life.
"Honestly, Prongs," Sirius drawled, stretching out lazily on the bed, "it's a date, not your wedding. She’s not going to care if your robes are navy or black."
James, however, seemed completely oblivious to Sirius’s sarcasm. He held the robes up to his body, looking between the two as if they might transform into something more impressive with sheer willpower. "But what if she does?" James muttered, frowning. "What if she likes navy more than black? Or maybe black is better because it’s classic? Or should I just go for something completely different? Maybe green?"
Sirius snorted, raising an eyebrow. "Green? You trying to win her over to Slytherin’s side now?"
"Shut up," James grumbled, tossing the green option aside in frustration. "You’re not helping."
"On the contrary," Sirius said, grinning as he propped himself up on his elbows, "I think I’m helping loads by pointing out how ridiculous you’re being."
James groaned, tossing the navy robes back into his wardrobe and pulling out yet another set. "I’m not being ridiculous. I just… I want everything to be perfect."
"Prongs, you’ve spent the last six years trying to impress Evans, and you finally got her to agree to go out with you. If she’s going to change her mind, it’s not going to be because you wore the wrong color robes."
James turned to Sirius, looking genuinely distressed. "But what if—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Remus and Peter came up the stairs and into the room. Remus had a bemused look on his face, clearly having predicted what they would find up here. Peter, on the other hand, was grinning like a kid about to watch the best show of his life.
"What’s all this, then?" Remus asked, leaning against the doorframe. "James, you’re not still obsessing over what to wear, are you?"
James looked at Remus with a helpless expression, holding up yet another set of robes. "It’s important, Moony. What if I get it wrong?"
Peter let out a giggle, hopping onto his bed to get a better view of the unfolding drama. "Blimey, James, I’ve never seen you this nervous. Thought you’d be used to going on dates by now."
"This isn’t just any date," James said, as though it should be obvious. "It’s *Lily*. This could be my one chance, and I can’t mess it up."
Sirius exchanged an amused glance with Remus, who was clearly enjoying the spectacle just as much as he was. "James," Remus said, his voice steady and reasonable, "Lily already agreed to go out with you. She’s not going to change her mind just because you wore the wrong thing."
James looked unconvinced, still staring at the pile of robes in front of him as though they were a life-or-death decision. "But what if—"
"Oh, for Merlin’s sake, just pick one!" Sirius said, throwing his hands up in mock exasperation. "Honestly, I can’t believe you’re this worked up over it. This is the same James Potter who’s faced down Death Eaters, pulled off impossible pranks, and won the Quidditch Cup singlehandedly last year. And now you’re being taken down by… wardrobe decisions."
James shot him a glare, though there was a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "It’s different," he muttered, turning back to the wardrobe. "This is Lily."
Sirius shook his head, trying to suppress a grin. As much as he loved teasing James about this, he knew his friend was nervous for real. And he got it, even if he didn’t quite understand it. James had been chasing Lily for years, and now that he finally had his shot, he didn’t want to blow it. Still, that didn’t mean Sirius wasn’t going to milk this for all it was worth.
"You know," Sirius said casually, lounging back on the bed with his hands behind his head, "if it’s all this much trouble, I’m sure Evans would love to go with me instead. I’m not fussed about robes. I’m sure I’d be charming in anything."
James shot him a look that clearly said ‘don’t even joke about that,’ but before he could say anything, Peter piped up from his bed, giggling. "Oh, yeah! Maybe Sirius should go instead. He’d just throw on whatever’s at the top of the pile."
Remus chuckled, shaking his head. "I don’t think Lily’s interested in a bloke who doesn’t bother with hairbrushes, though."
"Oi!" Sirius exclaimed, sitting up with mock indignation, running a hand through his thick, unruly hair. "My hair is perfectly fine the way it is. It’s got character."
James, finally cracking a real smile, shook his head and grabbed one of the black robes, laying it across the bed. "You lot are impossible, you know that?"
"Impossible but right," Remus said, grinning. "She already likes you, James. You don’t need to drive yourself mad over this."
Sirius watched as James stared down at the robes he’d finally selected. For all his bravado on the Quidditch pitch and his cocky grin whenever Lily had shot him down in the past, it was clear that underneath it all, James was still just a nervous seventeen-year-old bloke in love.
"Alright, alright," James said, finally conceding. "I’ll wear these. Happy now?"
"Thrilled," Sirius replied with a wide grin, kicking his feet up onto the bed. "Now, can we move on to something more important? Like how you plan to charm the lovely Lily Evans once you’re actually *on* the date?"
James threw him a look of mock annoyance, but there was a twinkle in his eyes now, the nerves loosening their grip. "I don’t need tips from you, Padfoot. I’ve got this under control."
"Oh, do you now?" Sirius replied, raising an eyebrow. "I’ll believe it when I see it. But just in case, remember—if things go pear-shaped, keep talking about Quidditch. That’ll win her over."
Remus laughed. "Yes, because what girl doesn’t love a good discussion on broom maintenance and strategies for dodging Bludgers?"
Peter chimed in, still giggling. "You could always try that thing you do in class, where you casually lean back in your chair like you don’t care about anything. It works when Slughorn asks you questions."
"Or," Sirius said, sitting up again, "just be yourself, Prongs. You’ve already done the hard part—you got her to say yes. Just don’t muck it up by talking about your broom the entire time."
James laughed, running a hand through his messy hair in an attempt to smooth it down—a gesture that was immediately pointless as it flopped right back into place. "I’ll take that under advisement," he said, finally sounding like himself again.
"Good," Sirius said, standing up and clapping James on the back. "Now, come on. Let’s go down to the common room and wait for your lady love to appear. I’d hate to miss the big moment."
James shot him a look. "You’re not going to hover, are you?"
Sirius put on his most innocent face, hand over his heart. "Who, me? I wouldn’t dream of it."
Remus snorted. "Of course not."
But James was already laughing, shaking his head as he grabbed his robes and headed for the door. "Come on, you lot. If you’re going to watch me make a fool of myself, at least let’s get it over with."
As they made their way downstairs, Sirius couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride for his best mate. James had finally made it, after years of pining and chasing, after endless pranks and rejections. And today, he was going on his first real date with Lily Evans.
And if he managed not to completely botch it, well… Sirius had a feeling this might just be the beginning of something big.
"Don’t forget, Prongs," Sirius said as they reached the common room, clapping James on the back one last time. "When you’re famous for being the bloke who finally won over Lily Evans, you owe all your success to me."
James grinned, the nervousness in his eyes replaced by something lighter—hope, maybe. "I’ll be sure to mention that when I’m giving my speech at the wedding."
Sirius barked out a laugh, watching as James glanced toward the stairs leading to the girls’ dormitory, waiting for Lily to appear
And as much as he loved teasing James, he was thrilled to see his friend finally get his chance at love.
And for once, it looked like James Potter was finally ready to take that leap.### A Night to Remember
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting golden rays across the Hogwarts grounds, the excitement around James's first date with Lily Evans reached a fever pitch. Sirius, Remus, and Peter trailed behind them, their hearts racing with a mix of anticipation and mischief. Watching from the shadows, they were ready to witness a classic case of James Potter and his infamous nerves.
As James and Lily strolled hand in hand toward the lake, Sirius could see the nervous tension radiating off his best mate. He had spent the entire afternoon trying to prepare, and now that the moment had arrived, it seemed like all that practice had been for naught. The poor bloke was practically a bundle of nerves.
“Look at him,” Sirius whispered to Remus and Peter as they crouched behind a nearby tree. “He’s pacing like a caged lion, ready to pounce but not quite sure if he wants to.”
“More like a duckling, if you ask me,” Remus replied, suppressing a laugh. “He looks adorable but completely lost.”
“He’s not adorable; he’s a disaster waiting to happen,” Sirius countered, shaking his head. “This should be a disaster of epic proportions. It’s like watching a live-action comedy.”
As they neared the lake, James turned to Lily, attempting to summon some confidence. “So, um, this place is nice, right?” he said, scratching the back of his head awkwardly.
“Yeah, it’s lovely,” Lily replied, her smile brightening the surroundings. “I always find it peaceful here.”
James nodded, his gaze flickering between her eyes and the ground, as if afraid to hold her gaze for too long. “I’m glad we came here. I—uh—”
Before he could finish his sentence, James’s gaze landed on a strand of hair that had fallen across Lily’s face. He hesitated for a moment, his hand hovering uncertainly as if weighing the significance of the gesture. The world around them seemed to fade away as he leaned in closer, his heart pounding in his chest.
“Let me just—” James murmured, finally moving to brush the hair from her face. He managed to tuck it behind her ear, his fingers grazing her cheek in the process. But then, as if struck by an unseen force, he pulled back abruptly, his face flushed.
Lily blinked, surprise flickering in her eyes. “James? Are you alright?”
“Yeah! Totally fine,” he stammered, his voice rising an octave as he stepped back, fumbling for something to say. “Just—uh, you had a bit of hair in your face, that’s all.”
Sirius watched with a mixture of amusement and sympathy. “Brilliant recovery, mate,” he muttered under his breath.
James’s cheeks burned a deeper shade of red, and he cleared his throat awkwardly. “So, do you, um, want to walk a bit closer to the water?”
“Sure,” Lily replied, her brow furrowing slightly as she observed James’s odd behavior. But she smiled, clearly trying to ease his nerves. “Lead the way.”
As they walked along the lake, Sirius leaned closer to Remus. “I can’t believe he nearly kissed her there. If he keeps this up, he might give himself a heart attack.”
“Or ruin the mood completely,” Remus said, chuckling. “You think he’ll ever get it together?”
“Oh, he will,” Sirius said confidently. “It’s just going to take a bit of time. That and a few more awkward moments like that.”
James and Lily strolled along the water’s edge, the sunlight glistening on the surface. They shared stories and laughter, and for a moment, it seemed like James had found his footing. But the nervous energy was still palpable, and the closer they got to the water, the more jittery he became.
“Do you ever think about what it’ll be like after Hogwarts?” James asked, his voice casual but betraying his underlying tension.
“Sometimes,” Lily replied, glancing sideways at him. “I suppose it’s all part of growing up, right? What about you?”
“Yeah, totally,” James said, but his focus seemed to drift elsewhere. He caught a glimpse of her smile and found himself momentarily entranced. He opened his mouth to say something else, but then his mind went blank, and he hesitated again, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
Sirius and the others watched, barely containing their laughter. “He’s really going for it,” Sirius whispered, shaking his head in disbelief. “This is a riveting performance, Prongs.”
Just as James was about to lean in for another potential kiss, he suddenly recoiled again. “Wait, are you cold?” he asked, glancing at her sweater. “You should probably—”
“James, I’m fine,” Lily interrupted, amused by his antics. “Really.”
“Right! I mean, I just thought—” He took a deep breath, clearly frustrated with himself. “I’m just trying to be considerate.”
“You are, and I appreciate it,” Lily said, her voice softening. “But you don’t have to worry so much.”
James nodded, though his eyes betrayed his nerves. “Okay, good. Just wanted to make sure you’re comfortable.”
As they moved further away from the lake, Sirius and the others began to speculate about what would happen next. They decided to follow James and Lily to the Three Broomsticks, where the atmosphere would be bustling and perhaps distract James from his nerves.
After a short walk, they reached the pub, its warm lights glowing invitingly. Sirius could see James’s demeanor change as they stepped inside; the lively chatter and clinking of glasses seemed to energize him.
“Oi, this place is packed!” James exclaimed, looking around, momentarily forgetting his earlier hesitations.
Lily smiled at his enthusiasm, and they found a cozy corner booth to settle into. They ordered butterbeers, and as the drinks arrived, James reached out to take Lily’s jacket, a look of determination in his eyes. “Here, let me help you with that.”
Lily raised an eyebrow but nodded, the warmth of the pub contrasting with the crisp autumn air outside. As James slipped her jacket off her shoulders, he hesitated, his fingers lingering on her arms for a moment longer than necessary. But then, caught up in his nerves, he abruptly withdrew his hands, his cheeks flushing again.
“Uh, sorry,” he muttered, quickly averting his gaze. “I didn’t mean to—”
Lily chuckled, a playful smile dancing on her lips. “James, it’s alright. I’m not going to bite.”
“Right, right. Just, you know, trying to be a gentleman,” he said, his voice faltering. “Is it too warm in here for you?”
“Not at all,” she replied, leaning closer across the table. “I actually like it.”
As they settled in with their drinks, Sirius leaned closer to Remus, eyes gleaming with mischief. “I think he’s going to combust at this rate. I mean, really, how can you be this terrified?”
“Maybe he just needs a little more practice,” Remus suggested, laughing softly. “But look at how she’s smiling at him. It’s working.”
Sirius nodded, his expression serious for a moment. “Yeah, but for how long? He can’t keep pulling away like this. He’s going to give her whiplash.”
Just as they were about to settle back into the conversation, James cleared his throat, finally finding some semblance of confidence. “So, what’s your favorite subject this year?” he asked, his tone casual as if trying to deflect his nerves.
“Definitely Charms,” Lily replied, her eyes sparkling. “Professor Flitwick is brilliant, and I love learning new spells. How about you?”
“Potions, for sure,” James said, grinning. “I mean, I’m definitely not as good as Snape, but I like the challenge of it.”
Sirius rolled his eyes from his hidden spot, whispering to Remus and Peter, “Let’s hope he doesn’t mention that time he blew up the cauldron during class. That would be quite the mood killer.”
“But you have to admit, James can be charming when he’s not overthinking everything,” Remus said, his gaze shifting back to the booth where Lily was still smiling.
As the conversation flowed, James relaxed a bit more, his natural charisma starting to shine through. He and Lily exchanged stories and laughs, the tension slowly easing. But then, as if the universe had a cruel sense of timing, James’s nerves struck again.
“Hey, I was thinking—maybe we could, uh, go for a walk later?” he suggested, leaning in closer, his heart racing again as he caught a whiff of her shampoo, the scent enveloping him in warmth.
“Of course! I’d love that,” Lily replied, her smile widening. But just as she leaned in, her eyes glimmering with expectation, James pulled back again, his expression suddenly serious.
“Wait, before we do that,” he said, his voice trembling slightly, “I should probably—”
“What’s wrong?” Lily asked, concern creeping into her tone.
“I just—um, I want to make sure we take our time, you know? I don’t want to rush anything.”
Lily tilted her head, her brow furrowed. “James, we’re just having fun. There’s no need to put so much pressure on it.”
“Right. Fun,” he repeated, swallowing hard. He leaned back against the booth, clearly still battling his nerves. “I’m just really excited, that’s all.”
The moment of tension hung
in the air, and Sirius couldn’t help but interject, leaning toward their table. “Oi, Prongs! Just kiss her already! It’s not like you’re about to explode.”
“Shut up, Sirius!” James hissed, his cheeks reddening again.
Lily laughed, her laughter ringing like music in the busy pub. “I think he just needs a little encouragement, don’t you think?”
“Absolutely,” Sirius said, smirking. “Consider it a public service.”
James shot a glare at Sirius, but Lily’s laughter lightened the mood. “You know, I think I could do with some encouragement too,” she said, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
James blinked, clearly caught off guard. “You? Me? Encouragement? What do you mean?”
“Maybe you should lean in and give me a proper kiss,” Lily teased, her tone playful yet suggestive.
James’s eyes widened, a look of utter disbelief spreading across his face. “Wait, are you serious?”
“Of course I am! You’ve danced around it long enough,” Lily replied, leaning in closer, her gaze never leaving his. “You know you want to.”
Sirius leaned back, grinning at the unfolding scene. “You heard her, mate! You can’t let an opportunity like this slip away.”
James’s hands fidgeted on the table, and he glanced around the bustling pub as if gauging the reactions of other patrons. “I just—” he began, but his voice trailed off. “What if I mess it up?”
“You won’t mess it up,” Lily said softly, her tone soothing. “Just be yourself.”
Taking a deep breath, James steeled himself. He leaned in closer again, a determined glint in his eye. Just as their lips were inches apart, he hesitated once more, his expression a mixture of excitement and dread. “Lily, I—”
“Oh for the love of Merlin, James!” Sirius exclaimed, unable to contain himself. “Just do it!”
With a sudden burst of courage, James closed the gap between them, capturing her lips with his. The kiss was hesitant at first, full of uncertainty, but as if on cue, Lily leaned into him, their mouths moving together in a rhythm that felt entirely natural.
Sirius held his breath, his heart racing. Finally, finally! After all the stammering and second-guessing, James had gone for it. He watched as James melted into the kiss, the nervous tension ebbing away.
Lily’s fingers tangled in James’s hair, and Sirius could see the shift in both of them. The atmosphere around them was charged, and the rest of the world faded into the background.
When they finally pulled apart, both of them looked breathless, their expressions a mix of shock and delight.
James blinked, his face flushed with surprise and elation. “Wow, that was—”
“Perfect,” Lily interrupted, her smile radiant.
Sirius couldn’t help himself. He leaned back against the booth and let out a loud wolf whistle, drawing attention from nearby patrons. “That’s what I’m talking about, Prongs! Brilliant work!”
James turned beet red, a wide grin breaking out across his face as he realized what had just happened. “I—uh, wow. I didn’t know I could actually—”
“Clearly you can!” Lily said, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “What were you so worried about?”
James chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. “Honestly? I have no idea.”
The rest of the night unfolded like a dream, with laughter and playful banter flowing easily between them. James seemed more relaxed now, his earlier hesitations melting away as he embraced the moment.
As they finished their butterbeers, Lily leaned in closer, her voice low. “You know, this was really nice. I’m glad we did this.”
“Me too,” James replied, grinning from ear to ear. “I’d love to do it again sometime. Maybe more than just butterbeers?”
“Definitely,” Lily said, a teasing glint in her eyes. “But next time, you’re not allowed to pull away so much.”
“I promise,” James said, his voice sincere. “No more hesitations. Just me and you.”
Sirius, still watching from a distance with Remus and Peter, felt a swell of pride for his friend. “Look at him, finally living his best life,” he said, elbowing Remus. “I think I’m going to cry.”
Remus chuckled, shaking his head. “Don’t get too sappy on us, Sirius.”
As the evening wore on, James and Lily continued to flirt and joke, their chemistry undeniable. James had finally found his footing, and it was clear that he was savoring every moment.
When they left the Three Broomsticks, the crisp air wrapped around them, but the warmth between James and Lily was undeniable. James reached for her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers as they walked back toward Hogwarts, laughter spilling from their lips.
“I think this is the start of something really special,” Lily said softly, glancing up at him.
James squeezed her hand tighter, the weight of his earlier nerves lifting. “I couldn’t agree more.”
Sirius and the others followed behind, their hearts light as they watched their friends forge a new path together. It was a night filled with promise and potential, a moment that would forever be etched in their memories.
And as they approached the castle, Sirius couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was changing. James had finally taken that leap, and in doing so, had opened the door to a new chapter in his life—one that was filled with adventure, laughter, and, perhaps most importantly, love.
“I knew he could do it,” Sirius said to Remus, a satisfied grin on his face. “I just knew it.”
“Yeah, and he owes you a huge thanks for all that encouragement,” Remus teased, nudging him playfully.
“Of course! I’m basically a love guru now,” Sirius declared, puffing out his chest with mock pride. “I’ll add that to my resume.”
As they reached the castle doors, the air was thick with excitement. Sirius watched as James and Lily paused beneath the archway, their fingers still intertwined, their smiles radiant.
“Alright, let’s see if we can get some more action out of them before we head in,” Sirius whispered to Remus and Peter.
“What do you have in mind?” Remus asked, a mischievous grin spreading across his face.
Sirius leaned in closer, lowering his voice conspiratorially. “Let’s make some noise and see if they’ll give us a show.”
“Thanks for the support, you lot!” James called out, his cheeks flushed but his smile undeniable.
Sirius could hardly contain his glee as he watched his best friend finally embrace the moment he’d been waiting for. “Just doing my job!” he shouted back, a triumphant grin on his face.
Lily rolled her eyes in mock annoyance at them, then seemingly decided that she would give them what they ask for. She turned to James, reaching out for his collar. She janked him down, placing a heated kiss on his lips, exaggerating the movements.
James, getting what she was up to, joined in, letting his hands travel into her hair, the back of her neck, her cheek, her hips. He even went so far as peppering kisses downher neck.
Lily threw her head back, her hands in James's hair and let a loud, obviously staged moan past her lips.
As they continued to cheer, the laughter and warmth of the night enveloped them, a promise of all the adventures still to come.
In that moment, beneath the stars and surrounded by friends, everything felt just right. And as far as Sirius was concerned, there was nowhere else he’d rather be.
This was just the beginning of a beautiful journey—one filled with laughter, love, and endless possibilities.
Another sound left Lily's lips, and it made her freeze for a second, as if surprised by it. James looked up at her, confused by her sudden stiffness and moved away from her slightly, his hands never leaving her hips. Her cheeks burned a bright red, and she decided to burrow her face in James's chest.
Sirius gave a loud laugh, understandment flooding his brain. She hadn't ment for the second sound to slip past her lips, she had actually gotten lost in the kiss, had actually been turned on by James's kisses.
James placed his arms around Lily, letting her calm down a bit. "Thanks a lot, guys!", he screamed over at them.
Sirius gave him a mischievous grin.
"Your very welcome, Prongs! Maybe I should make your potion explode more often!", Peter loudly stated, a satisfied grin.
As if on cue all heads snapped over to the least notorious member of their little group.
"WHAT?", Sirius exclaimed in utter disbelief.
Peter just shrugged sheepishly.
"I thought it might be funny. How was I supposed to know he'd try to snog the living daylights out of Evans?"
