Work Text:

Lore order
• Lush
• Retired From Sad, New Career in Business
• Laurel Hell
• Bury Me at Makeout Creek
• Be the Cowboy
• Puberty 2
• The Land is Inhospitable, And So Are We

If you take enough time out of your day to actually decipher what Mitski is saying, you’ll learn that she’s actually a shapeshifting alien writing songs about human experiences so she can document it and send it to the leader of her alien country. She claims to take many different forms such as: A geyser, the state of being liquid smooth, her body is made of crushed little stars, a part of the salton sea (Which is further proved in her song Because Dreaming Cost Money, My Dear) and she even claims to glow pink in the night. But here's the kicker, she doesn't know she's an alien spy.

Lore wise, her first album is Lush. It introduces us to her human persona. She has commented that the album was her as an entirely different person which leads me to believe it was her first experiment as a human. She started off her experiment as a female. This is proved easily by her first three songs: “Liquid Smooth” “Wife” and “Abbey” which are all from a relatively feminine perspective. In her song “Abbey” the following line is sung “There is a dream and it sleeps in me, To awake in the night, crying, 'Set me free' And I awake every night, crying, ‘Set me free’” Then her song “Brand New City” talks about her she know that her beauty and worth as a woman is fading as she ages. She states that an entire change of scenery and a different outlook on life would let her be at peace with aging and death. It takes her quite some time to decide what she should do about this irrepressible thought. She continues on as a woman. Yearning for a change and men that treat her terribly. She continues on nonetheless, learining about love and depression.
