Work Text:
Nile Freeman knew that she shouldn’t gamble with the members of her team.
She’d been told by Andy, she’d been warned by Joe. She knew better. She’d either get caught up in Booker and Nicky’s shenanigans or she’d end up owning them a lot of money.
In her defense, she had figured that the serious gambling only focused on their missions. Simple jokes being taken as a serious gamble? That wasn’t anything she could have assumed.
“I’m not reading that. No way.”
She’d made a joke about the fate of a contestant on a reality television show. Booker had disagreed with her. They said that whoever was wrong would have to read some book that neither of them wanted to read.
Nile had been wrong.
Booker tossed the book into her lap before walking away laughing.
A week later, Booker came home from the market to find Nile knee deep in a book. Not the one she’d been ‘tricked’ into reading, but one from later in the series.
“Are you still reading that?” he asked, bewildered.
“I’m not giving up on this. I’m not losing this bet.” She tucked her nose deeper into the pages, visibly tuning out the world.
“Alright then. Enjoy.” With a quiet laugh, he turned towards the kitchen of their latest safehouse and unloaded his spoils. At least she was reading something good, in his humble opinion.
Nile’s opinion, of course, remained to be seen.
