Chapter Text
The sound of lockers slamming shut and the murmurs of students filled the air at Ryusei Academy, a prestigious high school located in the heart of Tokyo. It was the first day of classes for the new school year, and while most students were eager to reunite with their friends, one young girl walked silently through the halls, more interested in the contents of her planner than in the conversations around her.
Asuna Yuuki, known for her intelligence, athletic skill, and kind demeanor, was one of the top students in her third year. She had always been committed to her studies, but that didn’t mean she had distanced herself from social relationships. Despite being reserved in many ways, she had a small group of close friends with whom she shared her days.
That day, as she made her way down the halls toward her classroom, a group of students began to stir as they noticed a new girl passing by. It was her first day at the academy, and her mere presence seemed to attract everyone's attention. Asuna glanced up from her planner just in time to see a young girl with dark hair and deep eyes walk past her.
—Who is she? —whispered one of her classmates, Rika, leaning in to Asuna’s ear—. She seems interesting, don’t you think?
Asuna watched her with curiosity. The girl had a serious, almost distant expression, and she didn’t seem to pay attention to the murmurs around her. Unlike many new students who arrived nervous or uncertain, she walked with a confidence that Asuna couldn’t help but notice.
—She must be a transfer student —Asuna replied as they continued their way to the classroom—. I wonder where she’s from.
Soon, they arrived at the classroom and took their seats. The usual atmosphere of chatter and laughter faded when the teacher entered the room, followed by the same girl Asuna had seen in the hallways.
—Good morning, everyone —announced the teacher, placing his books on the desk—. Today we have a new student in our class. I would like you to welcome her with respect. Her name is Misumi Tozawa.
Misumi stood in front of the classroom, her posture relaxed but reserved. As the teacher spoke, she gave a brief nod in greeting, saying little more. Despite her distant demeanor, there was something about her presence that held everyone's attention.
The classroom murmured a bit upon hearing her name. Some students exchanged curious glances, while others pulled out their phones, ready to look up more information about her.
—Misumi, would you like to say something about yourself? —the teacher asked, encouraging her.
Misumi smiled slightly, her dark eyes scanning the classroom before responding.
—Just that I hope to learn a lot here —she said, her voice soft but clear—. I like art and music.
—You can sit in the row next to Asuna — the teacher indicated, pointing to the empty desk beside the girl.
Asuna looked up and smiled warmly when Misumi approached. The new girl glanced at her briefly before nodding and sitting down, not saying a word.
...
The day went by normally, with classes progressing at their usual pace. However, despite the lack of direct interaction, Asuna couldn't help but steal glances at Misumi for the rest of the morning. There was something intriguing about her demeanor. It wasn't that she was rude or distant by choice, but there seemed to be an air of mystery surrounding her, as if she carried a burden she preferred not to share with others.
At lunch, Asuna and her friends gathered in the cafeteria as usual. While they opened their lunchboxes and chatted about the new year, Rika couldn't help but bring up the topic of Misumi.
—Did you see the new girl? —Rika asked excitedly—. Misumi, I think her name was! She has such a... how should I put it? Mysterious vibe!
—Yeah, I saw her —Asuna replied, taking a bite of her lunch—. She sits next to me in class.
—What do you think of her? —Rika asked, leaning in with curiosity—. She doesn’t seem very talkative.
Asuna thought for a moment. It was true they hadn't exchanged many words, but that didn’t mean the girl wasn’t interesting. There was something about her presence that drew attention.
—I don’t know her yet —Asuna finally said—, but she seems calm. Maybe she just needs some time to get used to the school.
---
Rika nodded, but before they could continue the conversation, Asuna noticed that Misumi was sitting alone at a table across the cafeteria. She was staring at her lunch but didn’t seem to be eating much.
Asuna felt a sudden urge. She stood up from the table and started walking toward Misumi, under the astonished gaze of her friends.
—Asuna, where are you going? —Rika asked, surprised.
—I’ll be back in a minute —she replied, determined to do what she felt was right.
When she reached Misumi’s table, Asuna cleared her throat softly.
—Hi, Misumi, do you mind if I sit with you? —she asked with a friendly smile.
Misumi looked up, surprised to see Asuna in front of her. She hesitated for a moment but then nodded.
—No, I don’t mind —she responded quietly.
Asuna sat down across from her, placing her lunch tray on the table. For a brief moment, they sat in silence, but Asuna didn’t let the discomfort linger.
—How has your first day been? —Asuna asked, breaking the ice.
Misumi looked at her for a second, as if deciding whether to answer. Finally, she spoke.
—It’s okay. It’s a bit different from my old school, but I’m getting used to it.
Asuna nodded, trying to lighten the atmosphere.
Shino watched Misumi Tozawa from a distance in the cafeteria. The new student seemed a bit isolated, sitting alone while Asuna and her group laughed and chatted. Although she had seen Misumi in her classroom, she had never had the chance to approach her.
Shino's curiosity grew. She wondered what Misumi thought of her new surroundings and if she felt comfortable. There was something in her gaze, a hint of nostalgia or perhaps longing, that made Shino want to get to know her better.
Asuna noticed how Misumi was beginning to relax. Sometimes, in the middle of their conversations, a small smile would escape her lips, and that made Asuna feel happy. It was a small but significant progress.
One day, while they were sitting in the courtyard, Asuna decided it was a good time to ask about Misumi’s interests.
—Is there something you enjoy doing in your free time? —she asked, looking for a topic that might excite Misumi.
Misumi hesitated for a moment, looking down before responding.
—I like to draw —she finally said, her voice a bit more confident—. It’s something I’ve always done.
Asuna smiled, intrigued.
—That sounds great! Do you draw often?
—Yes... but I haven’t had much time since I got here —Misumi admitted, a little embarrassed.
—Maybe you could teach me someday. I’d love to learn —Asuna suggested, genuinely interested.
Misumi looked up, surprised by the proposal. It was the first time someone had shown interest in her artistic skills.
—I could... it could be fun —she replied, a bit more animated.
Asuna felt that this small exchange had created a bridge between them. Little by little, their connection was strengthening, and Asuna was determined to help Misumi feel more comfortable in her new school.
Shino continued listening quietly, absorbing the conversation between Asuna and Misumi. She knew her moment to speak would come, and she wanted to be ready. Observing how Asuna was helping Misumi open up, Shino felt a mix of admiration and anticipation.
Asuna’s warmth created a welcoming atmosphere, and Shino hoped to contribute to it when the time was right. She was eager to join the conversation and share her own thoughts, knowing that every new connection could bring something valuable to their growing friendship.
Time passed, and although Misumi still hadn't fully integrated into the school's social circle, Asuna became her anchor. They met in class, and occasionally, Asuna invited Misumi to study in the library after school. It was during those quiet moments that Asuna began to learn more about the girl who had intrigued her from the very first day.
One afternoon, while they were reviewing their math notes at a table in the library, Misumi stared at her notebooks with a thoughtful expression.
—Asuna —she suddenly said—, why are you so kind to me?
The question caught Asuna by surprise, and she set her pencil aside to look at her with curiosity.
—What do you mean? —she asked.
—I don’t know... —Misumi hesitated for a moment before continuing—. It seems like everyone here already has their groups, their friends. But you always make an effort to talk to me, even when I’m... —she paused, searching for the right word—. Difficult.
Asuna looked at her with a gentle smile.
—I don’t think you’re difficult, Misumi. We all have our moments when we prefer to be alone. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t reach out to others. I just thought you could use a friend.
Misumi watched her in silence for a few seconds and then nodded slowly.
—Thank you. I guess I’m not used to people being so... open with me.
Asuna tilted her head, curious.
—Why do you think that is?
Misumi sighed, as if she were considering whether to share more about herself.
—I've always been a reserved person. In my old school, I didn’t get along badly with anyone, but I didn’t have close friends either. It’s not that I didn’t want to have them, but… —Misumi paused, her fingers playing with the edge of the notebook page—. I just have never been good at opening up to others.
Asuna nodded in understanding. She knew that sometimes, school life could be challenging not just because of academic responsibilities but also due to social relationships. What Asuna admired about Misumi was her ability to stay strong and secure, even when she seemed to prefer solitude.
—Sometimes, it’s hard to let others into our lives —Asuna said softly—. But you don’t have to do it all at once. I’m here whenever you want to talk or just share time without it being awkward. There’s no rush.
Misumi looked at her, her expression softening. It seemed that Asuna's words were managing to penetrate that barrier she had maintained for so long.
—You’re too kind, Asuna. Sometimes I wonder how you manage to be so considerate of everyone, even someone who hasn’t done much to earn your friendship.
Asuna smiled, a warm light in her eyes.
—I don’t think friendship is about "earning" it. It just happens. And I’m happy to have met you, Misumi.
For the first time since they arrived at school, Asuna saw Misumi's lips curve into a small smile. It was a subtle smile, but real, and in that moment, Asuna knew she had managed to break down part of the wall surrounding her new friend.
