Leave The Door Open

Summary:

Pin is nervous about being eliminated and the harm her point has caused during the last challenge. A worried Gaty tries to help her, and as she reveals her own problems, they realize how much they really like each other.

Work Text:

Pin pulled her limbs against her body in the darkened hotel room. The storm had passed, but the clouds remained, and the light that filtered in was dim. She knew her point was sharp and pointy, but maybe it was too much. Pushpins were meant to help hold things together, not tear thejm apart. And now she was surely about to be eliminated. Thoughts of her losing everything in BFDIA rattled her brain. She couldn't even hold onto Coiny anymore. The key-lime ooze squelched over scarlet plastic as tinted tears fell from her eyes. The lights were off, but the door was open, as if she wanted someone to help her out but wasn't sure of anyone in particular.

"Pin?" Gaty's warm, friendly voice swirled around her. "Are you okay?"

Although Pin was oozing a whole bunch, she couldn't bring herself to make a sharp remark about team names. "I'm fine here. The real question is are you? You still have that hole in your head." That was Pin's fault for being a pin. Why couldn't she just have been a soft harmless object, like a bubble or a puffball? She fell over into a puddle of her ooze.

"Oh, it stopped bothering me. Just... tell me what's going on. And what's up with that green slime." Gaty extended a leg towards Pin.

"Pins sweat ooze. Wonderful, color-changing mood ooze! Aren't pins amazing?" Pin's voice perked up for a second. "But I'm just worried about getting voted off!"

"Pin, you're gonna be alright." Gaty walked herself closer to Pin's bed. "Everyone loves you. I know you said the same thing about Teardrop, but remember, only likes matter here. People really liked you in BFDIA. I'm more worried about myself, TBH. Ever see the BFDIA voting results?" Gaty held up a chart with the results. "I only got 54 votes out of about 15 thousand! Nonexisty got five times as many votes as I did, and he doesn't even exist!"

"I know, but you looked different then. Your periwinkality is sure to get you absolutely oozing votes!" Pin shoveled a drop of her own ooze into her mouth. "Besides, my record in BFDI and BFDIA is actually more likely to get me eliminated. Viewers may get tired of seeing the same people compete, year after year! I suspect that's why my friend Needle got eliminated last episode. You're a newbie, so of course they want to see more of you!" Pin held her arms back from waving, as she did not want to signal not caring.

"That's a good point!" Gaty giggled a little.

"Unfortunately, mine is not so good..." Pin rubbed the ooze over her face.

"What do you mean? It's so sharp and pointy!"

"How could you even say that about the thing that put a hole through your head?"

"Robot Flower did it, not you. Just because you're used as a weapon doesn't mean you have to be one." Gaty gestured around herself. "Like, everyone I knew wanted me to be an unpainted boy gate, but I said no way!"

"Of course. Well, what if I accidentally hurt someone?"

"That's why they made Recovery Centers, so we can correct our mistakes immediately." Gaty smiled brightly. "Even the very worst ones."

"That reminds me, I still need to patch you up."

"Don't bother." Gaty pointed at the pinhole. "Getting a little messed up is all part of Be-ing FDI. Besides, it reminds me of you, and why would a heroic leader like you want to waste time on fixing up a creaky fence like me anyway?"

Pin stepped off the bed, her ooze starting to change from green to cyan. "I wouldn't say that if I were you. You have always been a valued member of our team, even when we weren't on the same team! And the type of gate I'd like to see standing in front of my Dream Island farm!" Pin's ooze turned periwinkle, and so did her cheeks. "I'd be proud to see you swinging every day to and fro as I check on the cattle for Dream Island."

"So, what does that ooze color mean?" Gaty waggled her eyebrows.

Pin panicked and smacked the ooze with her palms. "It means I really love farms!" She noticed a couple spots where Gaty's paint wore off, and pressed the ooze onto them. "I know you're keeping the pinhole, but I couldn't bring myself to let you lose your paint."

"Thank you. That means so much." Gaty pressed her hinges onto Pin's side. "Even if one of us leaves the show, we can still talk to each other. Just ask Two, they're a much kinder host than Four, or that speaker box. Well, at least if we don't disappear like those other contestants."

Pin's ooze finally stopped. "Don't worry! I'll make sure my pointy point is pointed the right way, so we can hold it together!"
