Caretaker

Summary:

During a fight, a magic user turns Logan into a real wolverine. Scott is left to take care of Logan afterwards.

Notes:

This idea has been rattling in my head guys

I have done actual research on wolverines for this fic and the sequel to The Next of Kin so I hope this is fun and semi accurate.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Scott was already having a rough day.

His alarm didn't go off and he was late to a debrief. He had to run to get there and then found out that it was only him and Logan on the mission. It made him regret his life choices as team leader and want to go back to bed.

Logan and Scott had this odd relationship going on. They seemed to really care about each other and were unspokenly dating. Everyone knew this but didn't say anything. If nobody acknowledged it, they didn't have to unpack it. Jean, bless her soul, was very happy to see Scott seem interested in someone after they broke up years before Logan even came into the picture. She wanted them to get together, but the only thing stopping them was that Logan and Scott fought badly still at times.

But it didn't matter. Here Scott was in the field with Logan. They had found out a witch was teaming up with a mutant to do god knows what. It was causing problems for people in the area and so they were sent to handle it. Scott was fighting the mutant, trying to hit them with small blasts. Logan was chasing down the witch, who looked pissed the last time Scott saw her.

Scott managed to blast the mutant to the ground, the man screaming in anger as he hit the ground. Scott ran up to him and put restraints on him. Their instructions were to restrain the two so they could turn them in to the proper authorities.

“You two are going to pay.” The man grunted as Scott heaved him up to his feet.

“Sure.” Scott rolled his eyes, not that the man would see. “It's not our fault you chose to do this.”

“I have my reasons.” The man ground out as Scott pushed him towards the X Jet. “At least I have the witch. She's my insurance.”

“Insurance for what?” Scott hesitated for a moment. He didn't understand what that meant. Before the man could notice, Scott pushed him up the ramp of the jet.

“Even if you got me, she would make sure I came out on top.” The man laughed as Scott sat him into a chair and strapped him in. “She was also told to handle the other mutant. I've heard about him. The Wolverine.”

“A lot of mutants know his name.” Scott made a face.

“Then you know exactly why I'd get him away.” The man turned to look at the ship. “You should probably go find him. I don't know what she did to him.”

Scott internally cursed as he turned and ran down the ramp. He looked around, observing the area around him. There was rubble of the destroyed wall of the building laying around and random things that got exploded. Scott looked to the building that had muffle noises coming from it. He ran through the hole in the wall, going inside, and he could hear yelling. Logan and the witch were arguing as they fought.

Scott ran up the stairs, hoping he could find Logan before the witch could actually hurt him. He could hear the bickering getting closer as he took each step by two. He made it to the third floor, which he found to be the level they were somewhere on.

“You act like an animal.” The witch commented, which Logan loudly scoffed at.

“Look who's talking.” Logan rebutted as there was a loud clang.

“Look who's talking?” The witch sounded offended. “You're trying to claw my limbs off you mangy mutt!”

Logan laughed at that, seemingly finding that comment amusing. Scott ran towards the sound, glancing into rooms that he passed. They were getting closer.

“I'm a wolverine.” Logan said like it was obvious.

“Do you know what? Since you said that, you gave me an idea for what I am to do with you.” The witch said and Scott finally found the room.

Scott could see the witch, her hands glowing orange as she stood with them held out. Scott felt his stomach drop as she lifted a hand and Logan didn't speak back. There was a strangled noise before there was a thump and the witch laughed.

Scott stepped into the room and the witch turned on him. She made a face as she cursed underneath her breath. Scott sent a blast her way, but she disappeared through some sort of portal. Scott felt anger and discontent rip through him before he turned to the room. He couldn't see Logan between the desks and random rubble.

“Logan?” Scott called out as he stepped forward, fear now taking him. “Are you okay?”

Scott didn't get a response and he pushed forward, stepping through the chunks of ceiling. Scott couldn't see anything and he was starting to think that Logan had been teleported. But Scott's thoughts were cut short when he heard a small noise.

Scott turned and saw a pile of ceiling and broken desk to the side. He approached it slowly, creeping towards it as if something would come out. As Scott peered around it, his hand to his visor, he saw something brown. He paused and the thing moved. Scott then realized it was fur as it popped out from behind it. Scott backed away and yelped.

It was a wolverine.

An honest to god legit animal wolverine. It was fully grown and growling.

Scott stared at it long and hard. The wolverine stared back, the grumbling from it still loud. Scott slowly kneeled down, his hands coming to the ground carefully so he didn't fall over. He put his hands on his lap as the wolverine bared its teeth at him. Slowly, Scott reached his hand out.

“Logan?” Scott spoke gently. The only explanation that Scott could come up with was that the witch did this. There was no other explanation to it.

The wolverine puffed up for a moment before creeping forward. It sniffed his hand before nudging its head into Scott's hand.

So it was Logan.

Scott carefully ran his hand over Logan's head, being careful to not startle him. Logan's eyes squinted before he pushed his small head into Scott's hand. Scott smiled as he pressed his fingers into the soft fur. He was surprisingly softer than Scott expected him to be.

“Well, this is unexpected.” Scott spoke softly as he brought his other hand to brush over Logan's back.

Logan stepped closer, his eyes closing as Scott pet him. Scott slowly put his hands underneath Logan, getting ready to pick him up.

“I'm going to pick you up, okay?” Scott told Logan.

Logan puffed up for a second before seemingly relaxing. Scott took that as a sign he was able to. But boy was Scott wrong.

The second Scott picked up Logan, he was wiggling in his arms and making strangled noises. Scott had to move quickly with a strong hold on Logan. Scott cursed quietly to himself because Logan was still heavy from what he assumed was the metal bones. He didn't understand how that transferred over, but it sucked. Scott practically sprinted up the stairs, hitting the door button with his hip and dropping Logan into the chair. The mutant who was tied up barked out a laugh.

“That's fucking hilarious.” The mutant wrinkled his nose at Logan. “She has a sense of humor.”

“How long will it last.” Scott grit out as he pet Logan, trying to calm the growling man (wolverine?) down.

“I don't know. I didn't put the curse on him.” The mutant shrugged. “Probably not too long though. She isn't known to be cruel. She's more of a prankster.”

“At least there's that.” Scott grumbled before moving to the pilot's seat.

Logan scrambled out of the chair to jump on Scott's lap. Scott grunted at the weight before sighing. He guessed he will keep Logan there for right now.

Scott buckled him up and made sure Logan was nestled safely in his lap before taking off. Scott could feel little claws dig into his lap as the plane moved, which made him feel bad. He always forgot Logan hated planes and this must be way worse. Scott moved one of his hands to brush over Logan's fur and hold him in place. He could feel Logan shake slightly as he grumbled and growled. It hurt Scott's heart.

“Does he hate planes? I can hear him growling from here.” The mutant sounded amused still.

“Shut up. It's probably terrifying to be turned into a small animal and then be taken onto a plane.” Scott tried to defend Logan. He didn't want Logan's honor to be smeared because of this. Whatever this was.

“Sure.” The mutant was quiet after that.

The whole ride Scott had his hand pressed into the fur, rubbing his thumb over Logan's small spine. He hoped it was as comforting as he intended it to be. Logan had stopped grumbling halfway through, so Scott took it as a win.

Scott landed the plane and slowly lifted Logan off of his back. Logan growled, but let Scott place him down. Scott stood up and moved to the mutant, who was just staring at him now. Scott pulled him up with a small smile as he hit the switch for the plane door.

“Nothing to say now?” Scott asked, tilting his head.

“Have fun with your new pet.” The mutant bared his teeth for a second.

“Oh shut up.” Scott started to push him down the ramp.

At the bottom of the ramp was Hank and Ororo. They were smiling as he stepped down with the guy. Their smiles looked more confused as they looked between Scott and the plane.

“Where's Logan?” Ororo asked as Scott stepped off the ramp and Hank took the mutant.

“Oh he's here.” The mutant laughed and Scott resisted the urge to kick him.

“What happened to Logan?” Hank frowned.

Scott turned to the plane, waiting for a moment before Logan started to stumble down the ramp. He was making little shrieking noises as he was clearly trying to not slip. It was almost amusing to Scott.

“Oh my god.” Ororo sounded like she was trying to not laugh as Logan walked up to Scott, sitting between his legs.

“A witch got him.” Scott motioned to Logan. “It's going to be a pain in the ass to deal with. I have no idea how this works.”

“We will figure it out.” Hank sighed before tugging the mutant along. “C'mon. You have somewhere to go.”

“No fun.” The mutant gritted out as Hank pulled him from the room.

Scott watched the two leave before turning back to Ororo. She looked highly amused as she pressed a hand to her mouth. Logan was staring at her and pressing his side into Scott's leg.

“He seems to like you.” Ororo almost laughed it out.

“I think it's because I was the first person he saw and recognized.” Scott shrugged. “We weren't really on the best terms before this so I'm surprised he is like this.”

“Just like a baby duck imprint.” Ororo turned her head to let out a small laugh. She turned back to them and squatted. She held her hand out for Logan to sniff, which he did but growled at her.

“I wouldn't.” Scott hesitated as Logan puffed up and Ororo took her hand back.

“Normally he's nice to me, so that's a little odd.” Ororo stood up and didn't seem bothered. “He probably isn't thinking with a human consciousness. He is in an animal body so I would assume that he's thinking like an animal.”

“Makes sense.” Scott reached down and pet the top of Logan's head. Logan tilted his head up to brush against Scott's hand as it moved away.

“He's like… a mini bear the size of an Australian Shepherd.” Ororo smiled and Scott looked at her.

“He's heavy as shit. I'm pretty sure he still has his metal bones.” Scott moved to kneel down, making sure to not sit on the tail that moved around. Logan half climbed onto his lap and Scott put his arms around him. “I hope he doesn't still have his claws.”

“We can have Hank and Jean look at him. I know Charles can't do much with animals, but Jean might.” Ororo smiled and Scott rubbed his hands into Logan's fur before standing back up. Logan slid off Scott's lap and onto the floor.

Ororo opened her mouth and reached out to put her hand on Scott's shoulder, but was cut off by Logan growling. The two looked down to see Logan standing up now, baring his teeth at her.

“I guess not.” Ororo took her hand back with a soft smile. “I guess you have your own little bodyguard now.”

“Oh great. I went from the guy wanting nothing to do with me two days ago to this.” Scott sighed almost dramatically.

“It could be worse. He could have ran off or gotten himself messed up even worse.” Ororo pointed out.

“Yeah, you're right.” Scott sighed.

Ororo smiled and turned away to walk out of the room. Scott stepped around Logan to follow her. Logan seemed to get the hint and followed them. Scott could hear the small sound of his claws on the ground and tried to not smile as they made their way up to the labs. Ororo was pressing a few buttons on her communicator. Scott could see her shoulders tense after a moment, the telltale sign for her that the telepaths were talking to her.

The three entered the lab, where Hank was now sitting in his desk chair. The screens on his desk were lit up with different reports on wolverines and transfiguration magic. Hank glanced at them, his eyes moving to watch as Logan bumped into Scott's leg when he stopped walking. Scott felt uneasy under his gaze and with Logan at his legs. He didn't know what to do in this situation.

Scott really didn't want to be put into this. He didn't know how to handle Logan being a literal animal who seemed to be attached to him for some reason and he sure as hell didn't know how to handle the stares that were going to come his way.

“If you put him on the table, I can start looking at him. I obviously can't x-ray him, but I can still do small basic tests.” Hank motioned to the metal table they normally used as a pseudo hospital bed.

Scott grimaced and looked down to Logan, who looked back up. Scott leaned down, putting his hands under Logan and bracing himself. Logan seemed to realize what was happening, tensing up, but Scott gave him no time to react as he heaved him into the table. Logan's claws scraped against the metal, making everyone else flinch.

“You're fine. Stop being dramatic.” Scott huffed at Logan, who just grumbled back.

Hank walked over, a stethoscope in his hands. Logan watched him closely as Hank stopped in front of him. Hank held out his hand and Logan sniffed it. Scott slowly pet Logan's back, hoping it would calm him down. It seemed to somewhat work as Logan only grumbled.

Hank started to do his exam, listening to Logan's heartbeat and breathing. He then felt parts of Logan for something that Scott assumed was for abnormalities. Hank then carefully took one of Logan's front paws and felt them. His fingers pressed into his leg and he smiled at this.

“Well, he still has his claws. I guess some things don't change.” Hank sounded amused as he put the paw down and moved to type something into the computer.

Logan took this opportunity to paw at Scott, managing to get him closer to the table. Logan then pressed his head into Scott's side. Hank looked back to them and just watched. Scott looked back, frowning.

“He really does like you.” Hank didn't look like he was judging it. It was more a matter of fact. “I wonder if it's how close you two are when he's human. He might find comfort in you more while me and Charles are probably more or less acceptable.”

“It would explain why he wouldn't let me touch him. He cares about me, but in his current state I'm probably not high enough on his list of people.” Ororo didn't look offended. She looked rather passive and accepting.

“He might react well to Jean and Rogue.” Scott spoke up, petting Logan's head. “He's close to them.”

“That is true. We will have to warn the kids to not mess with him. We don't know how he will react to them.” Hank slowly nodded and looked at Ororo. “How long until Jean gets here?”

“At most a minute. Charles isn't going to join us, he has class to attend to.” Ororo shrugged.

“That's fair.” Hank turned back to his computer. “I ran a small non-invasive scan on him and his body reeked of magic. His mutation should still function and he does have adamantium bones, but everything else is genuinely wolverine.”

“So for all sakes and purposes, he's just… a wolverine. He thinks like one and he just has impressions of people.” Scott frowned at this. That means that Logan won't remember any of it.

“Correct. Hopefully when it wears off, he will just come back without any problems with memories. In theory because of the research on transfiguration magic, his memories will be blurry but his body will be okay.” Hank informed them. “Just a little groggy.”

“That's good to hear.” Jean's voice was smooth as she walked into the labs. She was smiling and her eyes landed on Logan quickly. “Oh what did he get into now?”

“A witch.” Scott responded and he could feel Logan sit up more to look at Jean. “He might not react well to you, but we're coining on him recognizing you as someone close.”

“There's only one way to find out.” Jean smiled as she made her way over.

Logan stared up at her, peering at her with his dark eyes. Jean held her hand out and he sniffed her hand. He didn't growl or react badly, he just grumbled and turned away. Jean let out a small laugh before she brushed her hand over his head.

“Better than how he reacted to Ororo.” Scott felt amused while watching Logan Huff at Jean's hand and turned away more.

“He looks uninterested.” Ororo sounded amused by this again. “I guess he doesn't mind you as much.”

“Let me see if I can get into his head.” Jean put her hand over his head, which he pawed at.

Jean closed her eyes and Logan stilled. They seemed to be in some kind of trance as Jean did her work. Logan was the first to move, skittering back and making Jean jump at the sudden movement. Scott quickly grabbed Logan so he wouldn't fall off the table and Hank stood up at the movement.

“You're okay.” Scott spoke quietly to Logan as he pulled him back to the center of the table. He looked up to Jean, frowning. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah.” Jean held a hand over her heart, not looking upset but more spooked than anything. “I just wasn't expecting that.”

“What did you see?” Hank asked as he stepped next to Jean, his hand coming to her back.
“As much as you'd expect from an animal. He really likes Scott and his thoughts aren't wide enough to say much. He's a bit freaked out also.” Jean rubbed her hands on her jeans as she watched Logan poked his head into Scott's arm. “He doesn't seem too bothered so we should be okay. I think Scott should take care of him since Logan likes him the best.”

“Ah hell.” Scott quietly cursed as he lifted his arm up to pet Logan. “This isn't going to be easy, is it?”

“No. But at least him liking you will make it easier.” Jean shrugged and smiled at Scott. “Have fun with it.”

“Thanks. I won't.” Scott made a pained expression as he looked down to Logan.

He didn't know what to do with Logan. It wasn't going to end well if he didn't take care of him, but also Scott wasn't equipped for this. Scott wanted to yell in frustration as Jean turned to talk to Hank. He glanced down to Logan, who looked increasingly bored by the second.

What the hell did wolverines do in their free time?

Scott stopped petting Logan and took a step away. The others in the room watched as Logan made an annoyed noise and hopped off the table to follow him. Scott kept walking, knowing Logan would follow.

“Where are you two going?” Ororo asked as she watched them approach the door.

“I'm going to get food. He probably needs food too.” Scott sighed as he opened the door, holding it open so Logan could walk through first.

“There should be meat in the fridge he can have.” Jean offered up.

“Thanks.” Scott grumbled as he left the room.

“Oh! What a cutie!” Kitty smiled as she pulled Marie to the table. “Where'd you find him?”

Scott was sitting at the dining room table with food in front of him. Logan was in the chair next to him, his own plate full of raw meat on the table. Logan was surprisingly eating pretty neat as he reached his head up. They had been lucky to not have anyone run into them until now since Logan was staring holes into the two.

“That's Logan. The mission went south and now we're stuck with him like this.” Scott nonchalantly said with a motion to Logan. “Don't get too close. So far he's reacted badly to one or two people.”

“Oh!” Kitty looked highly amused by this as she smiled at Logan. “That's so silly!”

“Is he okay?” Marie looked worried as she gripped her gloved hands together. Her eyebrows were furrowed and she stepped forward.

“The tests said he was okay.” Scott shrugged as he reached over and scratched at Logan's head. Logan closed his eyes for a moment before batting Scott's hand with a paw. “He's still a grouch.”

“Some things will just never change.” Kitty put her hands on her hips and looked at Marie. “You should try and pet him. He sees you as his kid so he might let you.”

Scott watched as Marie shifted where she stood. She looked rather distressed, which was in all honesty how Scott would feel if something like this had happened to any of the older mutants he grew up with here. If Charles, Hank, or even Peter had been transfigured he would be stressed.

“Do you think he will attack me?” Marie asked softly.

“I don't think so.” Scott shook his head. There was a very small possibility, but he doubted it. “Just hold out your hand and let him smell you. Think about letting a feral cat smell you.”

“Okay.” Marie nodded and pressed her mouth into a thin line.

Marie took a few steps closer and Logan turned to stare up at her. She slowly held her hand out and waited for Logan to approach. He took a moment to move forward; hesitant to sniff her. After a second, Logan seemed to perk up and rub his head on Marie's hand. He reared up on his hind legs to put his paws on her arm. He opened his mouth to lightly nip at her hands.

“Oh!” Marie laughed and brought up her other hand to pet his head. He tilted his head back, trying to nip at her other hand. “He's like a big cat.”

“This is so unfair!” Kitty complained and put her hands on her hips. “And I can't pet him?”

“I'm not going to risk it.” Scott shook his head. “He likes Ororo and he growled at her.”

“Uhg.” Kitty rolled her eyes and motioned at the door. “Come on, Marie. We have class to go to.”

“Okay, okay.” Marie let out a small laugh before she took her hands away. Logan seemed a little aloof by the absence of the hands and grumbled as he sat back down. “Bye, Logan! Bye, Scott!”

“Goodbye, kids.” Scott offered them a smile as the two left the room.

Scott continued to eat and so did Logan. Logan finished first and sat next to Scott quietly before he seemingly got bored. He headbutted Scott, who huffed in response.

“Give me a second.” Scott batted a hand on Logan's head. Logan reached over and nipped the hand lightly and Scott yanked his hand back. “I hope you don't pick up that as a habit.”

Logan, of course, didn't respond but just stared up at Scott before headbutting his side again. Scott sighed heavily before picking up the plates. Logan seemed to recognize this and hopped down from the chair. Scott followed Logan into the kitchen and deposited the plates into the sink.

“Come on, fussy. Let's get you some entertainment.” Scott motioned for Logan to follow as Scott left the kitchen.

Scott groaned quietly as consciousness started to sleep into his brain.

He was on something that wasn't his bed and there was an object heavy on his chest. Something soft and fur coated was tucked under his chin. He could feel his arms wrapped around it and a soft breath on his chest.

Scott opened his eyes to see Logan, in his Wolverine form, sleeping in his arms and on top of him. Scott blinked and turned his head to see he was in one of the two recreational rooms. There were students around the room minding their own business. They didn't seem to mind that Logan and Scott were taking up the couch; instead a few had created a bed of pillows and blankets closer to the TV so their teacher could sleep on the couch.

Piotr turned his head and smiled at Scott. Scott lifted up a hand to lazily mimic a wave. Piotr waved back and went back to watching TV with Doreen.

Scott wrapped his arms around Logan, sitting up and supporting his weight. Logan didn't wake up, but instead his normal animal claws clinging to Scott's shirt. The kids all glanced at Scott as he carried Logan out of the room. He was glad they were minding their business.

Scott carried Logan back to his room and carefully placed him onto his bed. Logan just curled up and seemingly didn't care about the change in scenery. Scott smiled before changing into his pajamas.

Scott paused as he stood at the side of the bed, looking down at Logan. Sleeping in his visor was uncomfortable, but he didn't accidentally want to blast Logan to smithereens. Logan could recover of course. Scott had blasted him before by accident and the man simply regenerated the damage. But he was smaller and it wasn't guaranteed his powers worked correctly.

Scott accepted his date and climbed into bed behind Logan. He faced Logan and put a hand on his side. Logan turned his head towards Scott, his little eyes blinking before he yawned. Logan turned over before burrowing his body and face against Scott. Scott couldn't help but smile at this and curl up around Logan.

He was definitely getting used to this.

Many days had passed since Logan was turned into a wolverine. They were rounding on a week and everyone had adjusted to the change well.

The students kept their distance, being respectful of Logan's state and attitude. They understood that he didn't process them correctly and we're fine with watching him. A few times Logan had wandered up to some students and demanded attention if Scott wasn't giving it to him. They seemed happy and would play with him until he got bored.

Marie was having a fun time because she was the only student who could walk up to him and pet him. He would seek out Marie sometimes to throw himself at her. It wasn't uncommon to hear the girl shriek and adjust to having a heavy animal trying to be held. Marie had also figured out that she could pet him without gloves; his fur was a barrier to his skin so her powers didn't work. She had almost cried when she figured it out and pressed her face into his fur. She just couldn't touch his head or the paw pads.

Logan stuck with Scott 24/7 and would try to get Scott to play with him constantly. It was amusing to Scott for Logan to start nipping at him or jump onto him. Scott would scoop him up and hold him in his arms, struggling slightly, as he wrote on the board with a marker. Logan would wrap his little front legs around Scott's neck and lean his head on Scott's shoulder to watch the students.

Today, Logan was sleeping on a pillow and blanket next to Scott's desk. Logan didn't like to sleep on Scott's desk unless he was at it, so the pillow and blanket that was put there was dragged to the floor by Logan. He would snore slightly and it made the kids giggle.

Scott had his back to the class as he wrote problems for them to solve. He heard Logan grumbled but ignored it; thinking it was Logan waking up and being confused for a moment. He had done it before. But the grumbling continued before it turned into a growl. Scott tensed up at the noise.

“Johnny, stop.” Bobby's voice hissed.

Scott turned around to see what was happening. His eyes widened when he saw Johnny crouched next to Logan with a hand out. Logan was standing, crouching and his back arched as his teeth started to show.

“Johnny.” Scott snapped.

The reactions from the two were automatic. Johnny yanked his hand back as Logan let out an ungodly hissing spitting noise. Logan jolted and his front feet lifted and slammed back down like a cat would. Logan's metal claws came out and Johnny stumbled back, his hands landing on the ground behind him as he tried to move back.

Scott darted forward and grabbed onto Johnny's shirt and yanked the kid back. Logan growled again and made the hitting spitting noise. Scott moved in front of Johnny.

“Logan.” Scott grit out, catching Logan's attention. Logan growled back and Scott gripped his hands into a fist. “Stop.”

Logan stayed puffed up for a minute before deflating again and laying back down. He grumbled and Scott sighed loudly. Scott then turned on Johnny, who looked rightfully freaked out.

“Why in the world would you do that?” Scott’s voice held more irritation than he meant. He never got aggressive with the kids and he could see the look on Johnny's face gain hurt from it. Scott only felt slightly bad in the moment.

“I didn't think he would react like that.” Johnny tried to justify it. “He freaked out!”

“I told you all to not mess with him.” Scott took a deep breath to try and level himself. “You have detention for two weeks.”

Johnny opened his mouth to protest as he started to look more upset.

“If you argue with me about this I will make it a month.” Scott’s voice was hard.

Johnny grounded his face and pushed himself up in a still and yanking way. He brushed his clothing off and quickly turned to stomp back to his seat. He sat down heavily and Scott at that moment regretted becoming a teacher.

Johnny grumbled something and Bobby kicked his leg with a glare. Johnny shot him a glare and kicked him back. Scott could hear a hiss about Scott being defensive over his boyfriend. It made Scott's irritation spike as the kids around Johnny all snapped their heads to stare at him.

“Make it a month’s detention.” Scott grit it out.

The classroom was silent and Scott turned away from the kids. He flexed his hands and tried to simmer the boiling anger in his chest.

“How long do you think he will stay like this?” Scott asked as he wiggled his fingers against the table. Logan was batting his paws at the fingers, not putting any force into it.

“I don't know. I'd imagine soon. Hank said the magic is dissipating in the scans.” Jean shrugged from where she sipped her tea from across the table. “Why? Are you not enjoying the attention?”

“It's not that.” Scott sighed as he glanced up at Jean. She was a saint over the last few years. Jean didn't mind Scott and Logan's complicated relationship and she seemingly supported it. “I'm just worried about him.”

“That's a normal response, Scott. You do know that right?” Jean tilted her head at Scott, as if she was analyzing him without reading his mind. “You care a lot about him. You two may have this odd dance going on, but I can tell he's good for you. It frustrates him that you aren't letting him in. That's why he's acting like that.”

“This isn't about me and Logan's relationship. I don't have time to worry about that right now.” Scott scoffed and stopped moving his hand as Logan put his paws onto the back of his hand; practically trapping Scott's hand to the table.

“Why do you think he's so attached to you?” Jean was frowning now. “Do you really not understand how much you mean to him?”

“I think you're overestimating Logan, Jean.” Scott didn't want to talk about this. Not right now.

“I'm a mind reader, Scott.” Jean’s voice borderlined on irritation before it faded away. “I think you need to wake up and realize that people other than me can love you.”

That one stung. It sliced Scott down to his core.

Scott didn't respond, but instead let Logan nip at his wrist and paw at his hands. It made Scott's insides twist and he didn't want to think about the possibility that Logan actually loved him back. The possibility that their relationship wasn't just Logan having his fun. Sure, they were unofficially dating and everyone knew it, but Scott just thought it was a huge practical joke by Logan. A way for Logan to get sex and focus all of his energy on while he was here.

Scott lifted his hand slightly and then pushed Logan onto his back, making the wolverine let out a loud grunt and bat at Scott's hand. Logan jumped up and bounced on Scott's arm to fake attack it.

“Maybe you're right.” Scott admitted.

“I know I am.” Jean responded.

Scott was half asleep with Logan behind him.

Logan had started to act weird that day, being more tired and not wanting to move much. It concerned Scott at first but he brushed it off as Logan being more tired. Logan didn't want to be held today as he slept so Scott was giving him his space in the bed.

Scott felt movement behind him and he assumed it was Logan readjusting. It wasn't until arms wrapped around Scott's waist and a body pressed against his back did he open his eyes. Lips found Scott's neck and he hummed as he turned his head. Logan’s eyes were slowly blinking, his eyes half lidded as he kissed Scott's cheek.

“That sucked.” Logan mumbled as he closed his eyes and pressed his face into Scott's cheek; exactly how he would when he was a wolverine.

“Welcome back, Logan.” Scott reached a hand up to place on Logan's cheek. “I missed you.”

“I know.” Logan simply responded. “You looked lost.”

“I was.” Scott closed his eyes also as he leaned into Logan. “I'm glad you're okay.”

Logan kissed his cheek again before the two fell back asleep. Low breaths blowing onto Scott's neck like how they used to when Logan would come into his bed after he had nightmares.

“Thank you.” Logan whispered it into Scott's ear.

Scott missed this and was glad Logan was finally back.
