Work Text:

As the sun sets over the tranquil Maine landscape, Carrie and Sue sit on the porch of their cozy cottage, surrounded by nature's soothing sounds. Carrie's gaze falls on a small, intricately carved wooden box on the coffee table, an heirloom passed down through generations of White women. She took it from her mother's belongings after the tragic events in Chamberlain.

Sue notices Carrie's attention and gently asks, "What's that?"

Carrie's expression turns somber as she picks up the box. "It was my mother's," she whispers. "A family heirloom."

Sue's eyes widen with interest. "What's inside?"

Carrie hesitates, tracing the box's delicate patterns. "I don't know. I've never opened it, but it's special."

Sue reaches out and takes the box. "Maybe it's time," she encourages, her eyes sparkling.

Carrie's face contorts with emotion. "I don't know, Sue. It feels tainted, stained with my family's darkness."

Sue's expression softens. "No, you don't hate the box. You hate the stains. We'll make new memories, fill it with happiness, and make it ours."

Carrie feels a weight lift as Sue's words wash over her. She sees the box as a chance for a brighter future. Together, they can fill it with laughter, love, and life's joys.

With determination, Carrie opens the box, revealing a silver locket with a shimmering opal. Their eyes meet, sharing a smile, a promise of new beginnings whispered in the air. As stars twinkle in the night sky, Carrie and Sue sit, the box symbolizing their commitment to a path of hope, love, and a brighter tomorrow.
