Work Text:

“Well, this is unexpected…”

Rosemary partially looked up at Crabapple as she licked her new foal, trying to get them cleaned up and learn their scent. “Unexpected” was an understatement. What had happened was not normal. A horn was not normal.

Sprout and Sapling peeked out from behind Crabapple.

“Do they have a name yet?”

“Should we get the squirrel-man?”

Rosemary bristled at the latter question, instinctively pulling her foal closer, and ignored the first question too. The name would come to her eventually. It couldn’t be forced.

Crabapple nudged closer as she checked over the foal, and the presence of her mother calmed her down a little.

“Well, she’s healthy, at least. It shouldn’t be anything too worrying.”

“But… but how could this happen, Crabapple? This hasn’t happened before!”

“I’m not sure, but it doesn’t seem to do any harm. We’ll just have to keep an eye on her for now.”

“Alright then… Sapling, Sprout, you can come meet Petal if you want.”

The two yearlings edged closer, both staring at Petal’s small horn.

“It’s not dangerous?”

They didn’t wait for an answer, however – she’d have to have a talk with her students about not running into danger – and instead started greeting Petal immediately.

Crabapple leaned closer, and whispered in Rosemary’s ear.

“I can keep an eye on them if you want to rest. I know that this has taken a lot out of you. I’ll keep your daughter safe.”

Rosemary shot a grateful look up at Crabapple as she laid down for a nap. Right before the combination of exhaustion and warm sunlight made her doze off, she managed to get out a few words.

“Thanks, mom…”
