Work Text:

There’s no way this guy is FBI.

Ada stares at him still sitting on the ground next to the zombie dog that had nearly torn out his throat.  He frowns at it and mumbles something that sounds suspiciously like “Poor doggy”.

“Okay.  You’re FBI,” Ada says sarcastically.

“Yup.  I’m Leon Kennedy,” he says proudly, obviously missing the suspicion in her voice. “I’m here to, uh- wait, you should get outta here.  Before you get killed.”

Ada snorts. “Before I get killed.”

“Yeah!” Leon says, a bit defensively. “It’s dangerous!”

“I can’t leave,” Ada says. “I came here with a girl, Claire.  I’m not leaving without her.”

“Oh.  Well, um, I’m actually here to rescue civilians,” Leon says, clearly lying.  He’s a terrible liar.

“I’m not a civilian,” Ada says, gesturing to her police uniform.

“You’re a cop?” Leon asks, wilting a bit.

“First day.”

“Wow.  That’s, um, sorry?”

“You gonna get up?” Ada asks him. “Or are you gonna sit there ‘till some other dog comes to kill you?”

“Oh, right.” Leon scrambles to his feet.

“Holy- what happened here?”

Leon looks like he’s gonna be sick.

Ada shrugs, trying desperately to keep her cool. “No idea.  Some- thing killed him.”

She hates how shaky her voice sounds.  At least she’s doing better than Leon, though, who’s white as a sheet.

“Crap,” he mumbles.

“What?” Ada asks.

“He was my informant,” Leon says, pointing to the dead man in the cell. “You don’t have the key, do you?”

“Nope.  First day, remember?”

“Right.”

He turns to leave.  Ada grabs his wrist and he freezes.

“What’re you doing?” he asks.

“You’re going to get yourself killed, you idiot,” Ada says, though she herself barely even knows why she’s stopped him. “You’re staying with me.”

“But-”

“No buts,”  Ada says firmly. “I’m not having your death on my conscience too.”

He nods. “Okay.”

He sounds almost relieved.  Ada almost feels bad for him.  He’s young, probably younger than her, and clearly in over his head.

“We’re a team.” he smiles.

“No,” Ada says.

“Yes,” Leon says.

Ada doesn’t know what she’d been thinking.  All she knows is that Annette had started shooting and Leon had frozen so Ada had tackled him, and now her shoulder feels like it’s on fire.

“Oh my God,” Leon says, somewhere to her left. “Oh my God oh my God oh my God.”

Ada groans.  Her shoulder fucking hurts .

“Oh thank God,” Leon says, crawling into view on his hands and knees.

Ada wants to question that, but her shoulder hurts too much.  She reaches for it, but Leon grabs her wrist.

“Annette,” Ada says. “Go.”

“I’m not leaving you here!” Leon says. “Not like this!”

I’ll be fine,” Ada lies, even as a part of her wishes her whole arm would just fall off.

“Ada- you realize you’ve just been shot , right?”

“No I haven’t,” Ada slurs.

Leon’s staring at her worriedly, and Ada realizes his eyes are really pretty.

“Thank you,” Leon says, blushing, and Ada realizes she’d spoken aloud.  Oops.

Ada wakes up with Leon’s trench coat wrapped around her.  He’d also bandaged the shoulder she’d been shot in , which means he must’ve undressed her.  Strangely she finds the thought more amusing than violating, and wonders how red he’d gotten.  She stands slowly, considers the coat for a moment, then shrugs it on.  It’s too big, but she just rolls up the sleeves and sets off.

Ada finds Leon in a pile of trash with a piece of metal sticking out of his thigh.

“Are you… okay?” Ada asks him.

“Never better.” he smiles weakly and gestures to the metal. “I can’t get it out.”

Ada doesn’t know much about first aid, but she does know that if somebody’s been stabbed, you aren’t supposed to remove the stabbing instrument.

“I can’t walk like this,” Leon adds. “Believe me, I’ve tried.

“You could bleed out,” Ada tells him.

“I’ll take that chance.”

Adapulls on the metal with all her strength until it comes out.  Leon gasps.  Ada pulls gauze and rubbing alcohol out of her pocket and bandages his leg.

“You should leave.  Get outta here while you still can,” he says.

“Why would I do that?” Ada asks.

“Because it’s dangerous .”

“So?  I’m a cop , remember?  I’m not gonna leave, not when you and Claire are still here.”

Leon smiles weakly. “Are you sure?  I won’t hold it against you.”

“We’re a team, remember?”

“Right.” Leon’s smile gets wider.

“C’mon.” Ada stands and offers Leon a hand. “We don’t have all night.”

“Right,” Leon says again, taking her hand.

Ada hauls him to his feet.  He stumbles a bit, then catches himself.

“Here, lean on me,” Ada offers.

“I think I’ll crush you,” Leon says apologetically. “Thanks for the offer, though.”

Ada shakes her head. “You don’t think I’m strong enough to carry you?”

Leon’s eyes widen. “No, that’s not-”

Ada laughs. “I’m just messing with you.” She lightly swats his shoulder. “Lighten up a little.”

“Right,” Leon says. “Of course.”

Leon seems unable to sit still as they ride the cable car.  He bounces his good leg, drums his fingers on the seat next to him, and chews his lower lip.

Finally, Ada’s had enough, so she asks, “What’s with you?”

“I- do you trust me?” Leon asks, looking like he’s about to cry.

Ada doesn’t answer.

“Do you trust me?” she asks instead.

“Of course I do!” Leon says quickly. “I’m- I’m really glad I met you.  And I know- I know we barely know each other, but I’d like to.  Get to know you, I mean.”

“Are you asking me out?” Ada asks.

“Um-”

She kisses him then.  Leon gasps softly before kissing her back.  It’s a little awkward, neither of them having much experience, but Ada doesn’t mind.  She deepens the kiss, crawling into Leon’s lap.  He gasps in pain.

“Shit, sorry,” Ada mutters.

“N-no, it’s okay,” Leon says.

Ada can feel his erection pressing against her, and she giggles.

“Ada…” he breathes, face red.

The cable car comes to a stop.  Ada smiles apologetically.

“Think we’ll have to continue this another time,” she says.

“R-right,” Leon says.

He’s so cute, Ada can’t help kissing him again.

“Give me the sample so I can verify it.”

“No.”

Leon gapes at her.  Ada sighs.

“Leon.  I know you’re not really FBI.”

“What’re you-”

“Don’t bother trying to deny it.

Leon sighs heavily, “Why didn’t you say something earlier?”

“Because I didn’t want you getting yourself killed , you moron!”

“Ada-” Leon takes a step closer to her.

“No.” Ada pulls out her gun and trains it on him.

“Okay.” Leon raises his hands. “Listen, the man I’m working for, he-”

“Don’t care.” Ada holds the sample over the side of the bridge. “What’ll happen if I drop this?”

“Ada-”

“No.  Tell me.  If I drop this, will it cause any more damage?”

“I don’t know,” Leon admits. “Ada-”

Ada lets go of the sample.  Leon runs to the side of the bridge and watches it fall.

“Let’s go,” Ada says.

“Huh?” Leon stares at her.

“The man you’re working for- he’ll kill you, right?  So come with me.”

“Okay.” Leon nods.

They’ve made it.  Somehow.

Leon is passed out leaning against Ada, and the little girl Claire found is asleep in her lap.

“So…” Claire says. “Are you two, like, y’know.”

“I just met him,” Ada says, even as her face gets hot.

“So?”

So , no.  We’re not.”

“Hm, that’s boring.” Claire pouts. “It’d be pretty poetic, falling in love during a zombie apocalypse.”

“If you say so.” Ada shrugs.
