Moon

Summary:

"Well..." Alice continued, "if it made you feel better, to think there's always someone looking out for you..."
"What about you?"

"I don't think that stuff. It's just there, you know? Not like it has feelings or anything."

"I still think it'd be nice. It's like a flashlight lighting up the night."

Notes:

Day 5 of phmonth, theme was moon

Work Text:

The moon was full tonight.

It was well past midnight, the moon bright and beautiful, illuminating everything. Gilbert just went outside for a bit to get a breather, but he ended up staying, sitting on a chair that was laying outside.

He doesn't remember when he last sat like this, under a full moon. It made him feel less lonely.

It was peaceful like this. Quiet.

"Um...Gilbert?"

Gilbert turned to see Oz standing at the doorway.

"I can't sleep."

"That's not good. Sleep is very important for your growth. Is there anything I could do for you? Warm milk is good for insomnia. I heard from Break you could try handstanding for a bit-"

Oz interrupted him. "That's not- I don't think handstanding would work. Ahaha, I was hoping you'd let me stay here for a bit?"

The air was cold, and it could probably cause fevers. Still, it probably wouldn't do much harm.

"Fine. Hold on, I'll get you a-" before Gilbert could finish the sentence, Oz made himself comfortable on the grass.

"You could get sick!"

"You worry too much, Gil. And what's the point of being out on a night like this and not laying down?"

Oz was difficult like this.

"Still, you shouldn't-"

Right when he was scolding Oz, one annoying girl yelled. "Let me join!"

Why was he getting constantly interrupted today?

"Why, for the love of God, are you here?"

Alice looked quite a bit upset at that, yelling how he didn't get mad at Oz. Upon Golbert asking again, she whispered, "...couldn't sleep."

Gilbert sighed. "So same as Oz, then? Since he's already on the ground, you can just join him in getting a fever. Not like I could stop you anyways." he sat back on his chair, and watched Alice gleefully snuggle up to Oz.

They stayed like that in silence, nobody, surprisingly not even Alice, saying a word. The only thing that could be heard were crickets.

"Hey, Alice?"

"Hm?"

"Are you awake?"

"Uh-huh."

"Do you think... The moon watches over us?"

"I guess. It's just a ball of light, though. Not much thought there."

"Well..." Alice continued, "if it made you feel better, to think there's always someone looking out for you..."

"What about you?"

"I don't think that stuff. It's just there, you know? Not like it has feelings or anything."

"I still think it'd be nice. It's like a flashlight lighting up the night."

Alice looked pretty sleepy already. She was clutching on to Oz's sleeve and mumbling. "I'd be there...to light up..."

𝘖𝘩. Oz's lips curled into the tiniest smile.

The night was still long. The cold grass providing strange comfort, the sound of crickets never fading. The moon stood, brilliant, calm, illuminating.

Gilbert stood up. "Alright, I think it's time for you two to get back inside." He went to nudge them a bit, as both were almost a sleep.

"Gil..." Oz woke up.

"You can continue sleeping, just go back to your room."

He shaked Alice quite a bit, but to no avail. She was out cold. With a sigh, he lifted her body and propped her in his arms, carrying her bridal style.

Oz got up and followed Gilbert indoors.

They went to one of the spare rooms and laid down Alice. As Oz said goodnight, Gilbert whispered.

"...Oz...

I'd be your light too..."

It was quiet, barely audible, but it made Oz smile.

Since those two already proclaimed themselves as akin to the moon, he'd be their moon, too.
