Work Text:

Blaster sat down at the table across from bachelor number seventeen and tried not to sigh. When he’d signed up for the speed dating event, he hadn’t expected more than a handful of other mechs and instead, he had chatted with sixteen of the most boring mechs he had ever met and he wasn’t hopeful when he met the optic band of the blue and white minibot in the other chair.

At least, not until the minibot chuckled. “Oh, I think I had that look on my face when I met the last bot. It’s like they dug out the most boring mechs on the planet tonight.”

“That’s exactly what I was thinking!” Blaster gave him a rueful smile. “I’ve done a couple of these before and they’re usually fun, but tonight…”

“I hear you.” The minibot nodded. “I’m Beachcomber.”

“Blaster.”

“Oh, with a name like that, you could be in any industry. But I’m going to guess… military.”

“Not hardly.” Now Blaster laughed. “Music production and recording. You?”

“You don’t want to guess?” Beachcomber grinned at him.

“Sure, why not.” He studied the mech for a moment. “Life science. Biology, maybe.”

“You got the science part right, which is more than the others.” Beachcomber reached for his drink and took a sip. “Geology, with a specialty in organic worlds.”

“Really?” Now that was the most interesting thing he’d heard all night, even if he didn’t have a clue about geology. “What’s that like?”

“Well, I think it’s fun. But if I start talking about it, we’re going to hit the timer before I really even get going.”

“Then maybe we should say frag the timer and go find someplace else to talk.”

Beachcomber’s grin widened. “Best idea I’ve heard all night, mech. Lead the way!”
