Work Text:
“Look after the next one…” The Doctor said to her lovely ship, her tone gentle.
She pulled the lever as the TARDIS materialized on a hill. The TARDIS makes a sound, indicating its questioning tone.
“Going to take in one last sunrise.” The Doctor answers to the TARDIS, her hands almost on fire. She reaches for the exit. As always, she pulled open and closed the door behind her as she went over to get a better view. The ocean in view, the sun starting to rise, perfect. Another one in the books. Molto bene! Oh. That’s new.
The Doctor looks out to sea, breathing it in.
“The blossomiest blossom…” She said to herself, feeling the regeneration energy already about to be unleashed… She held it in too long, the last time she held it in was when… No, don’t think about it. This is a new day coming, a new Doctor coming in. But a sad thing pops up in the Doctor’s head.
“Ah… That’s the only sad thing… I wanna know what happens next.” She thinks out loud as she can feel the final stages creeping in. Might as well just… let it go.
“Right then, Doctor-whoever I’m about to be.” She said. “Tag. You’re it.”
Orange flames burst from her body as she let out this body’s last breath, in and out, regeneration fire consuming her body, spreading out into a wonderful spectacle.
As she regenerates, she can feel her hands, and legs changing… Clothes? Wait, her clothes are changing as well… Suddenly, the sensations happen immediately as the regeneration almost extinguishes and the flames dissipate from her. She couldn’t help but scream, her voice this time deeper. Oh, she’s now a he.
The regeneration finishes as the Doctor breathes in and out, almost gasping for a bit. Everything feels like an alarm on his body, he can’t help but check to see if his limbs are still intact. He looks down to see his legs, his trousers changed from regeneration.
“Legs!” He exclaimed. Old legs, wait… “Old legs! Good, it’s like riding a bike!”
He pats himself down, looking at his arms, familiar tweed sleeves on them. “Old arms! Old hands! Fingers! Lots of old fingers as well!”
Everything is familiar, the tweed jacket, the changed limbs, but what could it be? He runs his hands all over his face.
“Old ears, yes! Eyes, still two, good! A third one will be weird. Nose… I’ve had this before, but never mind that now! Chin… That’s old too! Hair!” He feels his hair.
“I’m still a girl?!” She exclaims, checking her Adam’s apple. “No wait! Not a girl!” He said out loud, still feeling his hair before pulling down to see the color. God damn it.
“Still not ginger!” He exclaimed with a disappointed tone. Something is off, but he’s missing something, but what?!
“And something important… I’m… I’m. I’m. I’m…” He thinks out loud again, before reaching unsubsciously for his chest, straightening his bowtie like a habit.
Wait a goddamn minute. Bowtie? Well, bowties are cool for a reason. Wait, no, don’t get distracted, Doctor!
“No! Yes! No… YES! NO!” He excitedly exclaimed before he raced back into the TARDIS, going to the console as he reached for the display panel, turning on a mirror mode to see himself… No way…
Floppy brown hair, green eyes, tweed jacket, bowtie… Missing a fez though, he could do for a fez. Or a stetson. That’ll work, maybe he can go meet up with Craig and see if his friend has extras- Never mind that!
“But… but…” The Doctor starts to think as the TARDIS makes a confused sound as well.
“Well don’t act confused, sexy! You should’ve known about this! 30 saved consoles even the future ones, you should’ve known!” He points out, aggressively like before.
He looks back at the mirror, staring at himself. A memory emerging from the deepest parts of his mind, something that he’ll never forget. Someone he’ll never forget. A face…
“I never forget a face…” his eleventh incarnation said.
“Oh, I know you don’t. And in years to come, you might find yourself revisiting a few. But just the old favorites, eh?” his future incarnation said, a smirk forming on both of their faces.
“But it can’t be… It can’t be this soon, that’s… That’s.. That’s impossible!”
