Summary:

Alice and Frederick's confession night, though no one spoke of love.

Notes:

The author is not a native English speaker, so there may be some awkward phrasing—please forgive this. I hope you enjoy reading it; I truly feel they are a perfect match.

Work Text:

The night was silent, wrapping Alice and Frederick in its still embrace. His fingers traced the chain of her sapphire pendant, their touch so soft through the silk of her shirt that it was almost imperceptible. As his fingertips drifted lower, her breath caught, then deepened, each inhalation laden with the gravity of his touch. His breath, faint and fleeting, surrounded her like the dewdrop-sweet scent of roses at dawn, closing in around her completely.

His fingers glided down her collarbone and gently clasped the pendant, moving so slowly it set her heart racing. Their quickening breaths shattered the silence of the night. The closeness of his skin heightened her tension, trapping her in an invisible cage. An involuntary tremor rose from her throat. Rarely had Alice felt fear, but now she felt as though she were a balloon adrift, wavering between the urge to escape his touch and the intoxicating scent that enveloped her.

"My intuition is never wrong..." he murmured, a statement meant to be firm, though it wavered, fragile and almost distorted. His forehead rested lightly against her shoulder, as if awaiting her response. The curtain stirred gently in the breeze outside, and his silver hair brushed her cheek, making her shiver at its softness.

"Between us..." he began quietly. But she dreaded hearing his judgment on their relationship. "No more." She shook her head, cutting him off, her voice firm. Frederick didn’t retreat but lifted his gaze to hers. A struggle and fear swirled within Alice’s eyes, yet it was as though they called to him, drawing him in.

His breath grew unsteady, and shame, confusion, and pain entwined within him, the pounding of his heart drowning everything else out. All the background noise faded as he took a deep breath to face the emotion budding between them.

"We’ve been hiding, Alice. Running from everything between us." He slipped off his glove, his fingers brushing her cheekbone as if erasing the barrier between them. "But we can't live this way forever." A quiet tension wound through the room, his gaze unwavering, chipping away at her defenses. She drew in a deep breath, fighting to keep her composure.

Yes, avoidance was not her path—she had long possessed the courage and strength to face anything. She began to let her guard down, slowing her breath and calming her tense muscles. The faint sound of a distant cry on the London streets reminded her of her own childhood. She despised feeling so vulnerable in love, as if it were the flames of Oletus Manor licking at her skin. She hated being so transparent before him. She couldn’t allow herself to remain like this; she would face everything with bravery—even love.

"I’m afraid," she whispered, her voice barely more than a breath, as if breaking through her last barrier. "Afraid I’ll let you down, that I won’t be worthy of your trust...your reliance." Regret surged up, for Alice had exposed herself too fully, let her fear show too openly. She wanted to push him away, to retreat back to her fortress. But their hands remained tightly entwined, as if a bridge had been lowered from her fortress, leaving her exposed.

"I know, Alice." His voice grew steadier. "I understand your fears; I feel them too." His deep, blue-gray eyes were half-lidded, his lashes shading them with a gentleness that softened his look. "Pain is the string that connects us, and I feel our resonance—we desire each other." His words, like a mirror, forced her to confront her own desires.

Alice froze, unaccustomed to seeing Frederick so unguarded. He had shed every defense, leaving only sincerity. "You’re incredibly special to me. You seem to see right through me, but...without contempt." He looked at her intently, a slight blush coloring his cheeks as he sought her response with unfiltered honesty. She felt a surge of emotion, their hearts drawing close in silence until there was no distance left between them.

"I will never look down on you or your struggles, your pain. You may think yourself weak, but I see you as strong," Alice replied with a gentle smile. "Pain is the bond between us, and I see that your struggle is no less than mine."

Choking back tears, he murmured, "No, I could never be as strong as you. You’ve shown me a way to face pain without self-pity or retreat...you’ve made me feel whole!" His emotions spilled over, piercing Alice's heart.

Her throat tightened as she felt his intensifying emotions, so powerful they seemed like a plea. She blinked slowly, her heartbeat pounding so loudly that it nearly hurt.

Breathe in, breathe out—she tried, desperately, to contain the force threatening to consume her. It was a wild beast, a flame, roaring, dancing, weeping, begging her to acknowledge it—it was love! The hidden creature lurking in the shadows of her heart had grown rampant and inescapable. How laughable, how tragic that she could not deny it; she still craved love!

So she wrapped her arms around him, feeling the resonance of their hearts. She realized that they saw each other clearly, through both pain and love.

"Nothing more needs to be said," Alice murmured.

Frederick drew deeply from the warmth of this embrace. Everything became clear—she was his muse, his goddess of inspiration. He would sing for her, fight for her, weep for her—his inner voice thundered like a storm, impossible to quiet.

He gently pressed his thin, pale lips to her forehead, the warmth in that moment as real as sunlight. Alice’s tears overflowed; her slender fingers gripped his collar, and she kissed him with all her might. Their bodies trembled slightly with excitement, their blood rushing like wildfire.

"Don’t leave me," Frederick whispered, his voice trembling with irrepressible longing. "I need you."

Alice didn’t respond, but she understood. His longing was as real as hers. She kissed him more deeply, as if their fates had finally intertwined.
