Chapter 1: The Proposition

Chapter Text

The Proposition

“Fuutarou Uesugi. I always considered you my equal. NOW PROVE ME RIGHT GOD DAMN IT.”

The voice booms through the building, the young blond dashes towards the dark haired boy across from him, watching his every move before he aims a jumping dropkick. Nobody ever goes for a move like that, he won’t be able to block this kick.

“I thought you’d know your place by now.” Uesugi’s voice radiates a calm rage, a rage you don’t see from the young man often. “You’ve made me angry, you really should NOT have done that.”

Uesugi simply sidesteps the blond, slamming his elbow into his side and sending him crashing into the ground. The blond catches his landing and propels himself upwards, landing a mean right hook into Uesugi’s side. Smiling wildly as he moves.

“Do you know the story of Sisyphus Uesugi?” the young man begins to monologue. His smile as he speaks would terrify a lesser man. “I’m not so curious about his sin, I care about his punishment! Cursed to push a boulder up a hill forever and never being able to complete the task, sound familiar? That’s me Uesugi! YOU ARE MY BOULDER! I CONSTANTLY HAVE TO PUSH TO DEFEAT YOU!”

His monologue is full of venom and rage. There’s an unfortunate truth to his monologue though, Fuutarou didn’t know this story yet.

“You really… Shouldn’t have… Said that.” He huffs out these words, slowly collecting more and more wounds as he continues forward. “There’s nothing stronger than… A knowledgeable man.”

All at once his cursed energy spikes, he’s getting stronger. No, not just that he’s found his rhythm. Turning to takeda he spins for a roundhouse kick, as his kick lands directly into his side, the energy being channeled into his attack surges. In that moment he’s found his zone.

“BLACK FLASH!”

Loud, crackling energy bounces through the landscape. In theory he could always land one though, in practice he didn’t have the hand to hand experience to successfully land this. Upon this adrenaline rush the young boy dashes quickly towards his opponent, landing punch after punch, His expression never changes. Since SHE was injured his face is that of a stone cold killer.

“I should’ve known Uesugi!” The graining voice of the enemy sorcerer, now against a wall as he screams into the horizon. “I SHOULD’VE KNOWN THE SPARKS OF BLACK WOULD CALL TO YOU!”

His opponent? His academic rival, a classmate and a formidable foe indeed. His hair glistens in the moonlight as he takes blow after blow, the damage being nearly too much to bear, unfortunately for Uesugi though he’s spotted an opening. Dropping to the floor he sweeps his feet out from underneath him quickly making him drop downwards, catching his chin in an uppercut as he goes. With this hit Uesugi ragdolls to the ground, catching himself coughing up blood in the landing. He quickly attempts to get up before his foot is stomped on by the blond.

“Unfortunately though.” The young combatant pants out, grinding his heel into the hand of Uesugi as he smiles wildly. “I’ve always been stronger than you.”

Uesugi grunts in pain as his injuries start catching up to him, the damage being too much to bear as he starts to lose consciousness. The last thing he hears before going out completely is a familiar voice, paired with the sound of footsteps rapidly moving towards him.

“UESUGI!”

Two months Earlier.

A loud click followed by the creak of the rickety door echoes through the depressing abode. A young man wearing a basic black school uniform, his dark blue hair looks like it had been cut by putting a bowl on his head and going to town on whatever hangs below it. His yellow eyes survey the hallway before calling out into the space.

The young man lets out a breathless “I’m home…” as he steps through the doorway

As the words leave his mouth, the sound of small feet begin to scurry towards him, a young girl excitedly appears in the hallway, her hair coloured much the same as her brother reaching down her whole back, she’s wearing a similar uniform to the boy though with a skirt instead of pants. She excitedly runs right up to him and wraps her arms around his legs.

“Welcome back Fuutarou!” The small girl yells upwards at the boy, making sure her voice was heard “How was your day! Any good stories?”

She quickly lets go of him, before jumping back and smiling widely. The blue haired boy quickly ruffles her hair before walking past her, letting out a soft chuckle as he goes.

“A warm welcome as always, Raiha.” He humors her questions as he moves, thinking back on his quite frankly boring day. Not much was learnt today. “Just the usual, nothing fun. Anyways What’s for dinner?”

The girl gives him a small pout as he rounds the corner, assumedly upset that her older brother had no fun stories from the Jujutsu world. He places himself at the kotatsu, pulling out a few textbooks and getting to work. This is part of the usual routine for the Uesugi family with Raiha returning to the kitchen and eagerly finishing her latest creation.

“Omurice obviously, can you not smell the eggs?” She giggles at him, her eyes glimmer with pride as she places the egg onto the rice. “I put some love into the dish so you better enjoy it! You’ll need all the help you can get after all.”

She giggles before serving the food to fuutarou. He offers a soft smile before picking at it as he studies, causing Raiha to frown at him. Studying during dinner is rude after all she should yell at him for this, there’s more important matters though.

“I mean it when I say you’ll need the luck.” She takes a slightly more serious tone, digging into her own plate of food as she speaks. “You’ve got a mission. Not a sorcery one though.”

This piques Fuutarou’s interest, it’s not often he gets a mission from someone outside of exercising a few spirits here and there. He looks up from his studying, taking a big bite of his omurice before raising an eyebrow towards his sister.

“Go on…”

“A man has requested your intelligence, he’s hiring a tutor at ten times the going rate. That’s fifty thousand a day.” She pauses for a moment, watching her brother's reaction to this info, noting his eyes widen slightly at the payment. “Before you ask, I have no clue if there’s a catch. The job description was to teach as well as protect for the foreseeable future. So I lied slightly. It is sorcery related, just not fully.”

Fuutarou listens intently to Raiha’s exposition, noting the important pieces to this. Mulling over his options, the missions he’s getting now is good spending cash to a normal teenager for him though it simply isn’t enough. This job could clear out so much of their debt in no time.

“Not knowing if there’s a catch worries me. It seems like a good job though, if you could send me more details that would be great.” He sighs, another day another job to do, at least this one is steady “I can read it over later. I will give you a tentative yes though.”

“Alright! Here’s his phone number. Call him and please be polite, He’s dad’s old friend. It’s a good idea to treat him with the respect he deserves.” She flashes a knowing smirk at the young man, messing with him ever so slightly

Fuutarou grumbles at that snide remark, he reluctantly takes the note that was slid towards him, finishing his meal before stepping outside to make a… very important phone call.

Outside

“Hello this is Fuutarou Uesugi. I am calling about the job offer.”

His voice is monotone, attempting to keep his voice steady and show no fear, can’t let your future boss sense any weakness whatsoever. After all, Even the slightest weakness could lose him the job.

“Yes, This is Maruo Nakano. I’m of the understanding you wish to take the bodyguard as well as tutor position. I’m of the understanding you have the skills to do this job.”

The man speaks with a professional inflection, even without seeing his face a chill runs down Fuutarou’s spine. Taking a deep breath he responds with all the false confidence of a benchwarmer football player.

“Yes sir! I believe myself to be an intelligent person, as well as a capable fighter. I believe I could teach your child plenty, keeping them safe in the process.”

With the most false confidence he has ever had, he speaks as if he’s a car salesman selling the most mediocre car to his richest client. It seems though his words have worked.

“Child, right. If it’s not too much trouble could you go undercover at their school as well. Asahiyama High, help them find their way.” The man lets out a heavy sigh, light typing can be heard on the other end of the phone “I have to go now, You may start tomorrow. I already had you accepted into the school.”

With this, Fuutarou is caught entirely off guard. So he’s transferring schools, going to a normal school for a while, this is entirely too much. Before he can even get a word in the line goes dead and he has to accept this new reality. He quickly panics and dials his father’s number.

“Fuutarou what is this about, you hardly ever call unless it’s important!”

“Dad, were you the one who found a bodyguard job for this Maruo Nakano? If so I am very ready to cuss you out over this.” He puts the phone away from his ear, making sure Raiha isn’t listening into his conversation before taking a deep breath. “I’ve been enrolled at an entirely new high school because of him!”

Fuutarou’s words are exhasperated, it’s clear he’s panicked over this. He rarely ever calls his father, usually it’s genuine life or death scenarios, not just a new job. He deemed this important enough to bring up.

“Oh yes Maruo, one to do things for himself isn’t he. Don’t worry too much about it. He’s got plenty of pull in the Jujutsu world, He’s definitely already pulled the strings needed for you to do this.” The older man chuckles at this, finding pleasure in his son’s torment. “I wouldn’t worry too much about it. This is good money! I gotta get back to work now kiddo good luck!”

And with that his father too hangs up on him leaving him feeling slightly better, yet still frazzled. He has nothing else to do except accept his current situation. He takes a deep breath, and enters back into his appartment.
