The clock was showing two thirty-two in the morning and neither of you could sleep. That's why you were both now crouched over the kitchen table, squinting and trying to solve an old jigsaw puzzle you found somewhere in a cabinet. Keiji rubbed his tired eyes causing his glasses to lift up over his knuckles and fall back onto his nose again, a little too far down on the bridge than where it stayed normally, before he pushed it back up with his finger.
"Say Keiji, do you like warm milk with honey?" You asked with your chin propped up against your palm, your bored gaze fixated on the puzzle.
His eyes looked up at you over the rim of his glasses, his head followed right after. He seemed to think for a moment.
"Can't say I have."
"What, honestly?!" With widened eyes you looked up from the puzzle. "That's unacceptable," you decided and immediatly got up from your chair to take two mugs out of one of the kitchen cabinets.
You heard him chuckle amusedly behind your back as you looked for the milk in the fridge and then poured it into the mugs.
"Seems like I've been missing out, huh?"
"Oh big time my dear, big time. But don't worry, we're about to fix that."
With his chin resting on the palm of his hand and a small smile, his eyes carefully followed you taking the mugs to the microwave. The kitchen was engulfed in a comfortable silence and the humming of the microwave heating up the cold milk from the fridge. For the time being the puzzle was forgotten as your eyes carefully watched one of the mugs rotate, making sure it wouldn't spill over, and his eyes watched your back, wondering if he was in a dream to be so close to you, enjoying his sleepless nights with you.
The second time the microwave beeped to signal the milk in the other mug was heated up as well you took the jar of honey, dipped a wooden spoon in it and let the golden liquid drop into the warm milk. You gave both mugs a good stir, set up one mug infront of your husband and wrapped both fingers around the other one as you took back your seat at the table opposite from him and looked at him with wide expectant eyes.
He raised a brow and gave you a look you couldn't quite read before he lifted the warm mug of honey milk up to his lips to take a sip. His glasses immediatly fogged up but he didn't let that bother him in the slightest. You took a sip from your own mug as well, though your eyes never left his face, anticipating his reaction to your favorite childhood drink. His foggy glasses cleared up when he brought the cup down and set it on the table, letting the new taste linger for a moment.
The first few seconds of silence when the sweet bevarage touched his tongue seemed so loud but then his tired eyes widened slightly and his eyes found yours. He took another sip causing his glasses to fog up again.
"Do you like it?" You finally asked with a wide smile, although you already knew the answer. His is expression told you that he was definetly more than enjoying the hot beverage you had just made him.
"I will drink this every single day of my life until I die," he stated seriously and took another sip to which a wide smile appeared on your face. When both of you finished your cups, leaving your tummy's warm and full, he reached his arm out and placed his hand on the half finished jigsaw puzzle on the table. Without question you placed your hand in his upon which he closed his eyes and intertwined your fingers, a sense of peace spreading in both your hearts.
"I'm so glad I married you honey."
A little heat rose up your cheeks. What was that all of a sudden? You wondered in slight embarassement but also delight at his remark.
"Because I made you honey milk?" You joked.
He chuckled. "Yes. But also," he opened his eyes again to look at your face. "Because I can't imagine anyone else I'd rather like to spend my sleepless nights with but with you."
It really wasn't fair how much affection filled your heart just by the thought of him alone. And that affection only grew whenever his voice reached your ears with those words meant just for you. If only he knew. You wondered if his love in that moment felt just as intense but there was a knowing in the silence shared between you that yes, he did.
"Me too," you told him, knowing those words would never be enough to capture the greatness of how you really felt. But you settled for it.
"I love you," it slipped out of your lips without thinking. He took off his glasses with his free hand and leaned over the kitchen table to place a soft kiss on your lips. The sweet honey milk you had just shared had left your lips a bit sticky and he absentmindedly licked off the honey residue on his lips as he sat back down.
"I love you too, Honey. More than I could ever put into words."
