Chapter Text
On the Pont au Change, the first minutes of the day after the fall of the barricades
VALJEAN: Javert! What are you doing? Get down from there!
JAVERT: Now I know that I’ve been wrong
I’ve to go where I belong
There is no more way for me
Let me go and you are free
VALJEAN: I am here and I cannot go
JAVERT: For your mercy just to show!
VALJEAN: What has happened? What has brought you here?
JAVERT: Let me die and you have nothing more to fear!
VALJEAN: Not even you, Javert, are worth an end like this
If I can change, believe me, that you also could
JAVERT: I haven’t and I won’t, it’s none of your concern
This is the last for what I yearn
VALJEAN: I can’t go from here
JAVERT: A liar just once more!
VALJEAN: It’s not that I don’t fear
JAVERT: Foolish to the core!
VALJEAN: Why don’t you understand?
JAVERT: I won’t listen your words!
VALJEAN: It will be our end!
JAVERT: You are free, I told you so
What else do you want to know?
You still have your perfect life
You still have a place to go
Better you’d have used that knife
VALJEAN: You can’t force me to do so!
I know nothing of your life
Neither you do know of mine
JAVERT: That’s the last thing that is fine!
Men like me can never change
I’ve come from the gutter once
Knew this is my only chance
I was born with scum like you
You won’t save me, no, not you!
VALJEAN: It’s the past that is now gone
You could try to journey on
I have changed and so you can
You could become an honest man
JAVERT: This is what will never be
This world means nothing more for me!
Javert leans forward; Valjean grabs his hand and pull him of the bridge again. Javert falls on the ground, hits his head and becomes unconscious. Valjean calls for a carriage and brings him to his own house.
