Work Text:
Staying in bed all day sounded way better than it actually was. After hours of just sleeping and boredom, the room started to feel more sickening than his own health. Behind the movie playing on the TV, he heard a lot of noise from outside. People coming and going on, talking about what they were doing on Halloween night.
Takao tried out everything he could think of to pass the time: video games, reading, even homework. All of them got boring quickly. Spending too much alone wasn't his thing. He texted some people too but everyone was busy in class or club activities, and now they'd be heading to the parties. And someone in particular would barely respond to his dozens of messages.
Without much of an option, he scrolled through his phone, glancing at the TV from time to time, while waiting for dinner to be ready.
After a while, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in." He kept looking at his phone, waiting for his parents or his sister to enter. The door opened but no one really came in, so he looked up to find Midorima standing right there, with a bowl in his hands, waiting for Takao to acknowledge him.
"Shin-chan! What are you doing here? It's pretty late. I thought you'd be home or at the team's party."
"They wanted me to go, but I preferred coming here." He closed the door and sat down at the other end of the bed. "Your mom told me to bring you soup." He offered the bowl to Takao, who grabbed it and took a sip.
"Thanks for the food! Very considerate of you. You want some?"
"No thanks, I ate before, and you already contaminated it." Midorima looked down with disgust at the soup.
"If you say so" He continued eating. "How was your day?"
"Very quiet, until now."
"You can just say you missed, I know you did. " He said smugly.
Midorima sighed, pushing his glasses up. "I warned you yesterday that playing in the rain was a terrible idea."
"Yeah yeah, it stopped being funny when only I got sick."
"How are you feeling now?"
"Ooh, way better with you here, I'm almost cured." He teased him. "Meh, I'm kinda just tired, I've barely moved from here all day, my legs are numb at this point."
"I can't help with that but I do have something for you."
"Aww, you brought me a gift."
"No..." He opened his backpack, taking out a bag decorated with ghosts and handed it to him. It was full of candy.
"The captain gave it to me for you, since you probably weren't going to the party."
"Really? How nice of him, I have to thank him in person next time." He put the bag on his nightstand, although he wanted to eat one at least, it wouldn't taste so good with the soup.
"This is also for you" In his hand, Midorima had a keychain with a black cat with a witch hat.
"Is this your gift?" He insisted.
"Don't get it wrong– It's your lucky item for today."
"And I guess that is yours" Takao pointed to the pumpkin pin on his chest, he nodded.
Midorima may not consider it a gift exactly, but considering who they were talking about, it was very thoughtful of him.
"It’s pretty cute, thanks a lot, Shin-chan." But weren't black cats bad luck...? He thought, and placed the keychain next to the bag.
Midorima changed topics. "What are you watching?"
"I don't know, I had it on the back while waiting. I was thinking of having dinner and going to sleep."
"Mmh, then I'll go change"
"Huh?"
"Your mom said I could spend the night here if I wanted."
"You're staying?!"
"Yes, if you excuse me." He stood up with his things and left for the bathroom.
What a surprise. First the visit, now a sleepover? This sure was a new side of him to play around with.
Not much after he left the room, his mom entered the room with a futon and started putting it next to the bed.
"So, are you feeling better?"
"Yes, a lot better"
"I'm glad. Very sweet of Midorima-kun to keep you company, but you should've said earlier he was going to stay"
"I didn't know he was coming. He said you told him he could stay"
"Well, I did let him stay, but it wasn't my idea, if that's what you mean."
"Heh... Well, thanks either way, mom"
She finished accommodating and got up. She approached the bed to give him a hug and a kiss on the forehead. "Don't stay up too late, and call me if you're not feeling good. Have a good night."
"Yes, you too. Good night." He hugged her back for a bit. She took the empty bowl and left.
So it was Midorima’s plan all along to sleepover. It explained him being ready to change, he couldn't just casually be prepared if he didn't think about it before to pack everything else. How proud did he have to be to not even admit he wanted to spend time together?
After a few minutes, Midorima came back. He took off his glasses and put them beside the futon, including the little pin. He went to turn off the light, Takao waited for him to lie down before speaking again.
"Psst, Shin-chan."
"Takao, go to sleep."
"After I say this!"
"Fine... what is it?" He wasn't sure what to expect.
"Next time you should tell my mom about your intentions to keep them secret and not expose you again."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Just now when she brought the futon, she said it wasn't her idea you stayed. And since it wasn't mine either, ohh, I wonder who could have been~" He got closer to the edge of the bed, trying to talk more directly to Midorima.
But he didn't respond immediately. Even with his eyes closed, he had a feeling Takao was staring at him. "...You're overthinking it".
“Sure I am.” Though his hawk eye might not be nightvision, with the little bit of moonlight coming through the window, he caught a glimpse of him slightly blushing.
"Anyways–" Unfortunately, the conversation was far from over. "And I promise this is the last thing, but I did really feel better when I saw you before. I thought you'd think I was joking, so, just saying."
"You'll feel even better if you rested correctly." He was too composed, but even he can't stay like that forever.
"You're no fun, Shin-chan, why so serious? Aren't you gonna give me my goodnight kiss?
"I'm not doing that." Midorima finally opened his eyes and looked back at him.
"Aw, not even on the cheek?"
"No."
"What about a hug?"
“...”
“Please?"
"Nghh, would that one be enough for you to let me sleep in peace?"
"Yesss, just one and I'll let you sleep all you want."
He didn't want to give in Takao’s fooleries, but if that would make him stop already... He sat up and moved closer. He wanted to end this as soon as possible and hope Takao wouldn't mock him after, but that was asking for a lot. He tried not to think not much of it -the embarrassment from before was enough- and just went for it. Midorima’s embrace was pretty light while Takao seemed like he didn't want to let go.
They slowly broke apart from each other, but of course, Takao wasn't done. So he grabbed his face between his hands and gave him a kiss.
"Gotcha, Shin-chan"
...
Midorima stayed completely still, processing what just happened. It was taking him too long to react. Takao started to worry, but wasn't sure what to do. He felt how hot Midorima’s face was getting.
"Idiot..." He ended up responding. "If you get me sick, I'm not forgiving you." He placed his right hand on top of Takao’s, indulging in the touch.
Takao finally relaxed. "Yeah yeah, I'll take the blame this time, Mr. Tsundere. You can sleep now."
"Wait." Before Takao could release him, Midorima grabbed his face with his other hand and gave him back a quick kiss.
"He he, I knew you were secretly a romantic~"
"You talk too much." Takao can let him have that one, for now.
They eventually came back to their respective places. Takao was pretty happy, the day didn't end up being so bad after all. Midorima felt happiness mixed with some leftovers of embarrassment, he never would've guessed such a result from his visit. If it were for another kiss, maybe the risk of getting sick wasn't so terrible.
"Shin-chan." Takao called him again in a lower voice.
"Mmh?"
"Sleep well! See you tomorrow."
"You too, good night." Midorima smiled a little, even in the dark, he knew Takao wouldn't miss that of all things.
