“I hope the forecast was right about the stars. The sky's as clear as plexiglass.”
Nakahara Chuuya had dragged you along across campus to a secluded spot on a hill on a Thursday evening. She was quite adamant about today of all days, despite having other obligations in the morning. You obliged simply because of her passion alone. Even now, you watch as she fiddles with the rented telescope she’d lugged all the way out here.
“C’mon, damn thing…” Chuuya hisses softly as she nicks one of her fingers between one of its bearings. “Shit! C’mon, I don’t wanna miss it…”
You watched as she finally steadied the scope with a triumphant expression on her face.
“Come over here! I bet you can see the Milky Way from here!”
You dipped your head, putting your face down to the telescope’s magnifying glass. The image was blurry to your naked eye, but you could see things in a way you’d never been able to before – the stars were almost grabbable, the moon was more than an idea in that grand sky… you bet if you focused harder, you’d be able to see an entire universe out there.
…!
Chuuya gasped behind you as it registered that something had zoomed past your vision. She yanked your shoulders and focused you upright, pointing excitedly.
“Look! Shooting stars!” She exclaimed. “Wait… that one’s…”
Chuuya trails off as the both of you watch the tails of the stars disappear like vapor trails… but a loud THUMP! causes the both of you to freeze. It sounded like something had fallen behind you. Chuuya, being the more explorative of the two of you, immediately recovered to check it out. You hear a squeal of excitement and run to take a look.
“Is this… a piece of a meteorite that we just saw?”
It was tiny, almost the size of Chuuya’s palm as she held it out to you.
“It’s not technically a moonrock, but I think as the discoverer of this strange piece of space, I’ll be dubbing it ‘Moonstone’.” She grinned and deposited it into your hand. “This is for you. Don’t lose it – it’s a one-of-a-kind.”
