Of Love and First Impressions

Work Text:

There was very little Shu was fond of, being a picky person.

Whether it was the quality of fabrics, songs, or props that he worked with on a nearly-daily basis, Shu had high standards for just about anything. Anyone who knew him remotely would also expect the same to be applied in his romance life.

Except, it wasn't.

Out of all the people he chose to love and pour his affections on, he picked Y/n.

Honestly, she wasn't really sure what she did to catch his eye.

She was just another student at the school Shu attended, also having transferred from Japan. With those similarities and your shared passion for art, it didn't take long for Shu to value her as a person and peer. In fact, she was the first person he opened up to in a matter of months... Which was why his fellow idols back in Japan were shocked upon seeing a girl linking arms with him when he returned home for vacation.

To be fair, he wanted to keep her as far away from the idol world and the drama his career would bring upon their newly founded and still-very fragile relationship. But no one should expect him to keep saying no and rejecting his beloved girlfriend's attempts to meet his friends and precious colleagues. Honestly, Shu couldn't tell what made her so interested in them until the girl herself spoke in the most matter-of-fact tone,

"You know all of my friends! You even had a phone call with my parents! But I don't know your family or friends, it's not fair...!"

He couldn't deny that his attempts of keeping her away from his career might have given her the notion that he was keeping her at an arm's distance (he wasn't), and he was planning to break up with her over something you did (also wrong, Shu doubts she has a single mean bone in  her body).

Of course, Y/n was first introduced to Mika over the many video calls he and Shu had, considering they were in the same unit and required communication. The younger boy took the news of their relationship well, quickly giving Y/n his stamp of approval after a short talk that somehow lasted two hours about art and how lovable Shu was. While the man was more than happy to see his girlfriend and his partner-in-art getting along well, he had to pry his phone out of her hand in order to calm his racing heart. Y/n had sang him praises before over his projects and artwork, but gushing about him with such raw emotion... Shu couldn't deny the pleasant shivers her poetic and loving words sent down his back.

Back to the current situation at hand, however, Shu was mildly annoyed at the fact his... Friends... Had come as a group in celebration of his newfound love life. And while Y/n looked a little overwhelmed, he could tell she was fond of the unique characters that were his friends.

"I never knew Shu had the ability to woo a woman like you, Y/n-Chan! You're truly a match made in Heaven! AMAZING! ☆"

Wataru had hardly shut up from the moment Shu and Y/n waltzed through the terminal doors, persistent on carrying her bag along with his.

Rei and Kanata shared smug looks, while Natsume stood to the side looking at Y/n like a wary cat. Shu had a feeling Natsume was simply paranoid, considering Y/n was so harmless she couldn't even kill the spider that showed up in the bathroom the one night she was staying over at his place. She wouldn't let him kill it, either, insisting that he throw it out the window via paper and cup.

"Well, if someone told me Shu-Kun was going to be the first of us to have a lover a month ago, I would've laughed. Looks like the tables turned."

The obsidian-haired man chuckled, but nodding approvingly at the couple.

Kanata nodded in agreement, humming a happy tune alongside Rei's comment.

Wataru happily threw flower petals that came from who-knows-where as if Shu and Y/n were getting married, while Natsume sighed abruptly.

"Well, no one knows how long they'll laST. You've only been dating for three months, nO?"

Y/n frowned nervously at the pessimism.

"Y-yes, but we were good friends before then..."

"Getting along as friends is completely different than getting along as loVERS."

The redhead muttered distastefully.

Shu also frowned at the negative attitude Natsume was bringing to the reunion when it was supposed to be a happy first meeting between his dearest friends (though he'll never admit it) and his girlfriend, whom he was enamored with far more than he'd like to admit.

"Natsume, I don't see a reason to be negative. Our relationship has been going smoothly, and I was hoping you'd make a better impression than be a pessimist."

The youngest of the six glared at Wataru, who smugly grinned back and flung another handful of petals into the air.

"Tch, Wataru-Niisan made me do it."

"What?"

"He dared me to act like I foresaw something bad happening between the two of you. I didn't want to, but he doubted my skills as a magician."

Shu turned to the light blue-haired man with a scowl, only for the latter to act as if he hadn't heard a word nor was the reason behind Natsume's behavior.

Y/n couldn't help but smile nervously as Shu squeezed her hand once before letting go and stomping after Wataru to scold him, leaving her with Rei, Kanata, and Natsume. The young boy sighed a little softer and approached her with a hand outstretched.

"I apologize if I scared you, Y/n-Neechan. If it wasn't for Wataru-Niisan, I would've said that you and Shu-Niisan had good synergy instead of that nonsense."

Chuckling, the woman shrugged a little, her smile still a bit nervous as she heard the distant sounds of Shu angrily ranting at his friend. Putting that aside, she shook the boy's hand.

"It's alright. As long as you don't have any bad intentions. I figured you were putting up an act since Shu said many great things about you."

Natsume looked a little surprised but brushed past it relatively quickly. He heard Shu talk about the girl he had been talking to, saying she was too nice for her own good and lived with her heads in the clouds. For a while he thought Shu was joking, but looking at Y/n now, it certainly was not a joke.

"Looks like Shu-Niisan wasn't lying either. You're quite the softie, Y/n-Neechan."

Kanata hummed, approaching the two for a better conversation.

"Y/n-Chan is very 'kind.' I think Shu made the right decision 'dating' her."

"Ah... Thank you...?"

"It certainly surprised us. He hasn't been in Paris for even year and suddenly he has a girlfriend. It's not everyday he opens up to someone so easily."

Rei agreed, observing Y/n with curious eyes.

"I wonder what methods you used to get to him~?"

"M-methods...?!"

"If you will, I'd appreciate it if you stopped putting my girlfriend on the edge. At this rate, you'll tire her out after than the jetlag."

Shu grumbled, finally done with scolding Wataru, or having found trying to do so useless because the jester seemed more or less the same and cheerful as ever. Y/n wondered how fearless Wataru was in order to not be shaken by Shu's anger. The only time Shu was angry around her was when the stitches were completely wrong on an outfit, and he yelled at himself more than anything over it for 30 minutes straight, yet the sight alone was more than enough for Y/n to remind herself not to piss him off.

"Come on, mon cherie. Mika should be here soon."

Perking up at the familiar name, Y/n followed after the pink-haired artist, though warily eyeing the luggage in his hands.

"Um... Shu, are you sure I'm allowed to go to the... ES, is it? Wouldn't your company be mad at you?"

The man scoffed, though he looked over his shoulder with a fond gaze.

"For what? Dating you? How absurd. I'm not worried about what anyone else thinks. Countless forms of true art has been revealed through this phenomenon we call love. If anything, our relationship can open my eyes to new styles of art I never considered. I'd call it a bonus more than anything."

With a smile, a little more confident than the last, Y/n fell into step next to him with his four friends watching the couple walking ahead.

"... Are we going to tell them that's the wrong entraNCE?"

"Shh, they'll pick up on it later. They're so in love they can't tell which way they're going."

"Hah... Wataru-Niisan, Shu-Niisan is going to kill you for suRE..."

"Fufu~ I doubt he'd want to be so violent in front of his lover. Oh, look, they turned around!"

"WATARU, I SWEAR-."
