So American

Summary:

Fluffy Caitlyn and Vi one-shot inspired by "So American" by Olivia Rodrigo.

Notes:

I’m not sure where the inspiration came from, but I had to share this idea. I hope you all enjoy it!

Work Text:

Drivin' on the right-side road

He says I'm pretty wearin' his clothes

And he's got hands that make Hell seem cold

Feet on the dashboard, he's like a poem I wish I wrote
I wish I wrote

Caitlyn's hands gripped the steering wheel as they cruised through the vibrant streets of San Francisco, the city's iconic hills illuminated by a dazzling array of lights. The car’s interior felt warm and snug against the evening chill, with the heater pumping out a comforting warmth. Beside her, Vi sat with a playful grin, her feet resting on the dashboard as she enjoyed the sights flashing by.

“Are you sure this is the right way?” Vi teased. “I mean, I thought you Brits were supposed to be sooo great at navigating.”

Caitlyn chuckled, shaking her head. “I promise I know where I'm going. Besides, you could have dressed warmer for this weather.” She glanced over at Vi, who had opted for a fitted tank top and a light jacket that clearly wasn’t enough for the cool evening air.

With a smile, Caitlyn reached over to her passenger seat, grabbing her favorite scarf—a soft, knitted piece in a rich burgundy—and draped it around Vi’s neck. The scarf hung loosely, accentuating the difference in their heights, with Caitlyn towering over Vi.

“You look good in that,” Caitlyn said softly, her voice tinged with affection as she stole a glance at Vi. “It suits you.”

Vi looked down at the scarf, a light blush creeping up her cheeks. “Really? I thought it was just… you know, your thing.”

“It is my thing,” Caitlyn replied playfully. “But it looks better on you. Trust me.”

Vi felt her heart fluttering as she pulled the scarf closer around her neck, soaking in not just the warmth of the fabric but the warmth of Caitlyn's words. In that moment, the cold outside faded away, replaced by a cozy comfort that made her feel safe.

“Thanks, Cupcake,” Vi said, her voice softening. “You always know how to make me feel good, even when I’m freezing my butt off.”

Caitlyn's gaze warmed as she glanced over, her eyes sparkling with affection. “That’s my job, isn’t it? To keep you safe and warm?”

As they approached a red light, Caitlyn reached over, her hand intertwining with Vi’s on the center console. The touch sent a small shiver down Vi’s spine, but this time it was from the warmth blooming in her chest. She looked down at their hands, feeling the contrast between Caitlyn’s cool touch and the heat radiating from their connection.

Vi chuckled lightly, her playful bravado mixing with the vulnerability of the moment. “You do a pretty good job at it.”

They shared a smile, the world outside fading into the background. The hustle and bustle of San Francisco felt distant, almost irrelevant. It was just the two of them, a cozy haven inside the car, driving under the twinkling lights of the city. In that moment, with Caitlyn’s hand holding hers, Vi felt as if the cold night couldn’t touch them, the warmth between them shielding against anything that dared to intrude.

And he laughs at all my jokes

And he says I'm so American

Oh, God, it's just not fair of him

To make me feel this much

I'd go anywhere he goes

And he says I'm so American

Oh, God, I'm gonna marry him

If he keeps this shit up

I might just be in lo-lo-, lo-lo-, lo-lo-, lo-lo-lo-lo-love

Caitlyn nestled comfortably on the couch, her long, cozy cardigan draped over her shoulders and a soft blanket spread across her legs, creating a snug cocoon against the autumn chill. The cardigan, a rich, dark navy, suited her perfectly, its sleeves just a bit too long, falling over her wrists in an effortlessly elegant way. She had on a simple, fitted tee underneath, one that hugged her frame in a way that contrasted with the relaxed layers surrounding her. Her jeans were neatly rolled up at the cuffs, hinting at a relaxed evening in, far from her usual refined look.

Vi, sprawled beside her, wore an oversized hoodie that practically swallowed her frame, the sleeves hanging past her hands. The hoodie, a faded gray with hints of old band logos, suited Vi’s relaxed, slightly rugged style, and she’d paired it with loose sweatpants that only added to her laid-back look. Her hair, usually styled in a tousled updo, now hung loosely around her face, giving her a softer, more casual appeal.

She leaned against Caitlyn, her hand resting on the back of the couch, fingers occasionally brushing against Caitlyn’s shoulder as she animatedly recounted her story. The room’s warm, golden glow softened their features, creating an intimate cocoon around them. The bustling sounds of the city faded into the background as they shared a quiet moment, surrounded by takeout containers and the cozy disarray of a night spent in each other’s company. Caitlyn’s gaze was fixed on Vi, her blue eyes alight with warmth, while Vi looked back at her, an easy grin spreading across her face, feeling entirely at home and completely at ease in this moment together.

“So, there I was, right?” Vi began, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “I’m at this massive concert, surrounded by all these people, and I trip over my own damn feet!” She threw her hands up for dramatic effect, nearly knocking over a carton of fries. “I’m talking a full-on, ‘let’s take a bow’ situation. And the guy next to me just laughs and says, ‘Hey, at least you didn’t eat shit!’”

Caitlyn couldn’t help but burst into laughter, the sound flowing easily between them like music, shaking her head in disbelief.

Vi leaned in, her expression playful. “Oh, it gets better! After I nearly killed myself, I decided to redeem myself by attempting to sing along. But you know me, right? I start belting out the wrong lyrics, and this guy just stares at me like I grew a second head!”

Caitlyn grinned, shaking her head. “I can picture it! You and your charmingly terrible karaoke skills. Truly a sight to behold.”

“Right? I mean, who doesn’t love a good singalong?” Vi leaned back, grinning like she’d just pulled off the ultimate trick. “So, after completely butchering the song, I took this ridiculous bow—because, you know, I’m classy like that. But I smacked my head right on the speaker, full impact, with a beer in my hand!”

Caitlyn was already laughing, eyes crinkling as she shook her head. “Let me guess, you ended up soaked?”

“Yep. Beer all down my front,” Vi replied, unabashed.

Caitlyn’s chuckle turned into a playful eye-roll and a grin. “You’re so American.”

“Damn right! Just wait till I get a hot dog in my hand; that’ll really seal the deal,” Vi shot back, winking.

“God's sake! Hot dogs and karaoke? How is that even legal?” Caitlyn giggled, rolling her eyes with exaggerated disbelief.

“Oh, come on,” Vi smirked, leaning in closer, her eyes gleaming with playful mischief. “Don’t act like you wouldn’t have loved seeing me soaked in a see-through shirt.”

Caitlyn’s cheeks warmed despite herself, and she rolled her eyes, playfully nudging Vi. “You’re impossible.”

“Impossible and charming,” Vi shot back with a wink, clearly pleased with herself.

Caitlyn shook her head, still smiling. “You’re a disaster, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Vi beamed, feeling genuinely heard and loved. “Thanks, babe. Seriously, though, I appreciate you listening to my nonsense.”

“I’ll always listen.” Caitlyn grinned, leaning in closer.

After their laughter faded, Vi’s eyes brightened with that familiar spark of spontaneity. “You know what?” she leaned in, as if she were about to share the best secret. “Let’s go out. Right now. We can’t waste a night like this on the couch.”

Caitlyn blinked, glancing between Vi and the cozy spot they’d just settled into, but the excitement in Vi’s gaze was hard to resist. “You really want to?” she asked, already smiling.

“Absolutely!” Vi laughed, jumping up and grabbing Caitlyn’s hand, pulling her off the couch. Caitlyn let herself be swept along, the weight of the day lifting as they dashed toward the door.

Outside, the night felt full of possibility—the cool air brushing their cheeks, carrying a faint mix of salt and street food from nearby stands. The city lights sparkled bright against the darkened sky, the streets alive, like they’d stepped into a scene crafted just for them. Caitlyn felt her pulse quicken, swept up in the lively energy around them.

Vi’s hand stayed in Caitlyn’s, warm and reassuring as they strolled through the streets. Neon reflections played across Caitlyn’s face, and Vi watched her out of the corner of her eye, captivated by the way Caitlyn seemed to glow in the soft city light. At one point, Vi’s laugh broke out loud, clear, and uninhibited, drawing Caitlyn’s gaze.

“What?” Caitlyn asked, chuckling at Vi’s sudden burst of laughter.

“Nothing,” Vi grinned, pulling her closer as they reached a quiet park at the edge of town. “Just happy. This is… I dunno, exactly where I wanna be.”

They walked deeper into the park, the streetlights creating soft circles of light that flickered around them, casting long shadows on the path. The sky above was dotted with stars peeking through the clouds, like nature had decorated the evening just for them. Vi finally stopped, turning to Caitlyn with an expression that softened, her usual confidence giving way to something deeper, almost reverent.

“You know,” Vi began quietly, her voice dipping low, alive with feeling, “I could get used to this. Just us…”

Caitlyn felt her heart swell, and she gazed back into Vi’s eyes, unable to hide the affection blooming inside her. “Yeah, me too,” she murmured softly.

Vi stepped closer, the distance between them shrinking until Caitlyn could feel the warmth radiating from her. She reached for Caitlyn’s hand again, their fingers intertwining naturally, and she held it tight, their breaths mingling in the cool night air. In that quiet, charged moment, the world seemed to fall away, leaving just the two of them beneath the starlit sky.

“Cait…” Vi whispered, looking into her eyes, vulnerable in a way that was so unlike her usual bold self. But before she could finish, Caitlyn leaned in, closing the space between them, her lips finding Vi’s in a kiss that was both tender and electric.

They melted into each other, the city lights casting a warm glow on their entwined silhouettes as they stood together under the stars. The kiss lingered, unhurried and full of quiet promises, a moment that felt like the world had paused just for them. In that embrace, all the laughter, love, and shared dreams flowed between them without a single word.

As they finally pulled apart, Vi looked at Caitlyn with a lopsided smile, her eyes shining with all the unspoken feelings in her heart. “Guess you’re stuck with me,” she said, grinning, her voice low and full of warmth.

“Good,” Caitlyn replied, a playful glint in her eye. “Because I don’t plan on letting you go.”

God, I'm so boring, and I'm so rude

Can't have a conversation if it's not all about you

Vi was out with her sister, Jinx, and their friends Mylo and Claggor, grabbing late-night food at a lively diner tucked into a corner of the city that seemed to sparkle with its own energy. The place was bustling, filled with clinking glasses, laughter, and the smell of greasy fries and fresh coffee. It was a scene that normally would’ve had her feeling completely at ease, but her mind kept drifting back to Caitlyn. She could picture Cait there beside her, laughing at the diner’s quirky signs, maybe even raising an eyebrow at the oddly-named “Double Trouble Burger” on the menu. Caitlyn would probably order it, too, just to see what the fuss was about.

“Yo, Vi! You with us?” Claggor leaned forward, waving a hand in front of her face, breaking her trance.

Vi blinked and grinned a little sheepishly. “Sorry, just… thinking.” She tried to settle into the moment, taking a sip of her drink and leaning back. But Caitlyn’s laugh echoed in her mind, and she couldn’t help herself. “You know, Caitlyn would probably love this place. She’s always going on about ‘authentic little spots,’ the kinds that have stories just baked into the walls.”

Jinx raised an eyebrow, elbowing Mylo. “There she goes again. Think she can go ten seconds without bringing up her lady?”

Vi let out a short laugh, feeling a warmth creep into her cheeks. “It’s not every ten seconds!”

“Oh, yeah?” Mylo shot her a knowing smirk. “What about when we were talking about the game last week? And you went off about how Caitlyn would totally nail that last shot?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Vi shrugged, half-laughing, half-embarrassed. “But you know she would’ve killed it! Cait’s got this… I don’t know, focus. She’s like, intense in this way that’s just really cool.”

Claggor shook his head, biting back a laugh. “You’ve got it bad, Vi. Don’t think I’ve ever seen you this… distracted. Not even when you were crushing on that girl from the convenience store.”

“Hey, that was different,” Vi smirked, feeling her mind drift back to Caitlyn again. “She’s… she gets me, you know? In a way that I didn’t even know I wanted to be gotten.”

The others watched her, their playful grins softening as Vi spoke, her words coming out quieter than she’d meant. “And it’s not just that she listens or, like, knows all the random stuff about me. It’s like, I actually want her to know. Everything. Every joke, every dumb moment, every random thing that pops into my head. It just feels… empty without her knowing it, too.”

Jinx snorted, but her gaze was warm. “Oh, Vi. You’re such a romantic, it’s actually disgusting.”

Vi rolled her eyes, but couldn’t stop the smile that spread across her face. “Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. But Cait—she just gets it, you know?”

The table fell quiet, a rare moment of soft understanding settling over them. They were used to Vi’s antics, her brash confidence, her loud laughter, but there was something different in the way she spoke about Caitlyn. It was deeper, like Caitlyn had managed to reach parts of Vi even she didn’t know existed.

“Wow,” Mylo finally said, chuckling softly. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you like this, Vi. Maybe this Caitlyn really is the real deal.”

“Don’t get used to the mushy stuff,” Vi teased, throwing a crumpled napkin at him. But even as the laughter returned to the table, the soft ache in her chest lingered, a warmth that filled every part of her when she thought of Caitlyn.

She couldn’t help it—she was hooked, head over heels.

The way you dress, and the books you read

I really love my bed, but, man, it's hard to sleep when he's with me

When he's with me

When Caitlyn stepped through the door, Vi nearly forgot how to breathe. Caitlyn looked stunning in her perfectly pressed blazer and fitted trousers, the whole look so effortlessly professional that Vi couldn’t help but feel a rush of heat surge through her. The blazer hugged Caitlyn’s waist, accentuating her posture, while the crisp white button-up beneath framed her collarbones and chest in a way that left Vi a little dazed. Caitlyn’s tie hung loosely around her neck, lending a relaxed elegance to the otherwise polished ensemble. As her hair cascaded over her shoulders, it caught the light, flowing like dark silk, and Vi couldn’t shake the thought that she looked like she’d just walked off a magazine cover.

“Hey,” Caitlyn greeted softly, stepping closer, and as Vi closed the distance between them, Caitlyn reached up, brushing a thumb gently over Vi’s cheek. Vi leaned in, and they shared a soft, lingering kiss, just enough for Vi to get a little lost in the way Caitlyn’s lips felt, warm and soft and everything she adored. When they finally pulled apart, Vi was left with a slight blush on her cheeks, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at her lips.

“Hope you weren’t waiting too long for me,” Caitlyn murmured, her hand still resting on Vi’s shoulder, her alluring glasses sliding slightly down the bridge of her nose.

“Not at all,” Vi replied, her voice barely above a whisper, still entranced by Caitlyn’s presence. “Though I don’t mind the wait when you come back lookin’ like that.”

Caitlyn chuckled, her cheeks coloring just a bit. “You’re too sweet.” She leaned back, setting her bag down. “But I promised I’d finish that last chapter of The Picture of Dorian Gray before we settle in to watch something, remember?” Caitlyn gave Vi a gentle smile as she crossed to the couch, shrugging off her blazer and draping it over the armrest, but leaving the button-up on. Vi, completely entranced, couldn’t take her eyes off the way the fabric hugged Caitlyn’s figure, accentuating every line.

Caitlyn opened her book, her fingers gliding over the page with a sort of elegance that made Vi’s chest tighten. The sight of Caitlyn, sitting there so at ease and immersed in her reading, stirred something in Vi. She could see the faint glimmer of interest in Caitlyn’s eyes as she read, the subtle way her brow furrowed in concentration, and Vi was mesmerized.

“What’s it about?” Vi asked softly, moving closer to sit beside her.

Caitlyn glanced up, smiling. “Oh, it’s a classic by Oscar Wilde—about a young man who stays eternally youthful while his portrait ages instead. It’s really fascinating, actually.” Her voice was warm, and Vi loved the way her glasses perched perfectly on her nose as she spoke, framing her eyes beautifully. “There’s so much about beauty and morality, and the way Wilde crafts the characters is just... brilliant.”

Vi’s gaze lingered on Caitlyn’s lips as she spoke, her voice soft and low, and she felt a warmth pooling in her chest, unable to keep herself from smiling at Caitlyn’s excitement. She settled in, content to watch Caitlyn read, her heart fluttering every time Caitlyn turned a page.

Caitlyn’s focus was entirely on the book, and Vi respected that, letting the moment stretch between them. She loved seeing Caitlyn so engrossed, but the way the button-up hung just right, revealing the gentle curve of her collarbone and the line of her jaw, made it increasingly difficult for Vi to keep her thoughts purely innocent.

As Caitlyn reached the last few pages, Vi could barely contain herself. “Can you finish it already?” she teased lightly, her voice playful but with an edge of impatience.

Caitlyn glanced at her, a mischievous smile breaking through. “I promise I’ll be done in just a minute.” She turned back to the book, her eyes scanning the words as if they were the most fascinating thing in the world.

Vi waited, fidgeting slightly as the seconds ticked by, every moment feeling like a delicious tease. Finally, when Caitlyn closed the book with a satisfied sigh, Vi’s heart raced in anticipation. “About time,” she said, grinning as Caitlyn set the book down.

“Alright, you win,” Caitlyn laughed, her eyes sparkling. “What’s on your mind, Miss I-can’t-wait-to-kiss-me?”

Without waiting for another word, Vi leaned in, capturing Caitlyn’s lips in a heated kiss that felt like everything she had been holding back. Caitlyn responded instantly, melting against her, their breaths mingling in the warmth of the moment. Vi lost herself in the kiss, her hands finding their way to Caitlyn’s waist, feeling the way the fabric clung to her curves.

As they kissed, they moved instinctively toward Vi’s bedroom, the rest of the world fading away, leaving only the two of them, wrapped in each other’s warmth and longing.

I apologize if it's a little too much, just a little too soon

But if the conversation ever were to come up

I don't wanna assume this stuff

But ain't it love?

I think I'm in love

Vi led Caitlyn down the winding streets of her old neighborhood, the air buzzing with the familiar hum of the city. The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over everything, giving the concrete jungle a warmth that felt like home. The sounds of laughter, music, and the distant hum of traffic wrapped around them, creating a lively backdrop that made Vi's heart swell with nostalgia.

“Here it is,” Vi said, stopping in front of a large brick wall, her eyes lighting up with pride. The mural sprawled across the surface, a vibrant explosion of colors and shapes, each stroke infused with Vi’s energy and passion. “This is my first big piece. I was, like, fifteen when I painted this.”

Caitlyn stepped closer, her eyes widening as she took in the intricate details of the mural—a mix of swirling colors that told a story of hope, freedom, and the beauty of their neighborhood. “Vi, this is incredible,” she breathed, genuinely mesmerized. “You did this?”

Vi felt a warm flush spread across her cheeks, a mix of pride and embarrassment at Caitlyn’s admiration. “Yeah, I kinda went wild with it. I was trying to capture the spirit of the place, you know?”

“It’s beautiful,” Caitlyn said, her voice filled with awe. “I can see so much of you in it. The energy, the vibrancy… it’s all there.”

Vi's heart soared at Caitlyn's words, and she turned to the next wall, gesturing for Caitlyn to follow. “And this one,” she continued, “is a tribute to all the local kids. I wanted to show how creative they are, how much they’ve got to offer.”

As Caitlyn studied the mural, Vi began to share stories about each piece she’d painted. She recalled late nights spent perfecting her work, the laughter of her friends echoing in her ears as they sprayed paint under the moonlight. Caitlyn listened intently, her eyes sparkling with admiration, her focus unwavering. Every laugh and every word of encouragement felt like a warm hug wrapping around Vi’s heart.

“I can’t believe how talented you are, Vi. These murals tell a story, your story,” Caitlyn said softly, her voice filled with sincerity. “I’m so proud of you.”

Vi’s heart swelled at the praise, feeling a rush of warmth that made her want to burst. “Thanks, Cait. That means a lot coming from you. You always get it, you know? You see the beauty in everything.”

As they wandered through the neighborhood, Vi reached into her backpack and pulled out two cans of spray paint—one pink and one blue. “Want to give it a shot?” she asked, a playful glint in her eye.

Caitlyn looked surprised but excited. “You’re serious?”

“Absolutely! It’s super fun, and I’d love to teach you some moves.” Vi handed Caitlyn the blue can, feeling excitement at the thought of sharing this part of herself with Caitlyn.

Caitlyn examined the can, her brow furrowing slightly in concentration. “Okay, what do I do?”

Vi guided her through the basics, showing her how to hold the can, how to shake it, and how to create a nice flow. Caitlyn listened closely, her focus intense as she followed Vi's instructions. With a flick of her wrist, Caitlyn began to spray the wall, her lines precise and confident.

“Wow, you’re a natural!” Vi laughed, watching Caitlyn’s eyes light up with joy as she created a perfect blue heart on the wall. The sight made Vi’s heart skip a beat.

Feeling inspired, Vi quickly pulled the pink can from her bag and joined Caitlyn, painting a heart right next to hers.

They stood side by side, admiring the hearts they’d just painted, vibrant against the brick wall. The lively sounds of the neighborhood buzzed around them, but everything felt serene in their little bubble.

Vi felt the moment shift, a warmth spreading through her. “You know, I didn’t expect this to feel so… easy. Being here with you, painting like this,” she said, glancing at Caitlyn.

Caitlyn turned to her, a soft smile playing on her lips. “I get it. It feels natural, doesn’t it?”

“Yeah, like we’ve been doing this forever,” Vi replied, feeling a flutter in her chest.

Caitlyn raised an eyebrow, a teasing glint in her eyes. “Just so you know, this is the best mural I’ve ever painted.”

“Oh, come on,” Vi laughed, nudging her playfully. “This is my best work yet!”

In the comfortable silence that followed, Vi felt a rush of emotions. She turned to Caitlyn, her heart racing. “Hey, I just wanted to say… I love you.”

Caitlyn’s eyes widened for a moment, surprise flashing across her face, then a radiant smile broke through. “I love you too, Violet.”

Vi’s heart soared at the simple honesty in Caitlyn’s response. “Really? Just like that?”

“Yeah, just like that.” Caitlyn said, her voice warm and genuine.

“Good,” Vi said, a grin spreading across her face. “Because I really mean it.”

They stood there for a moment, fingers intertwined, feeling the energy of the colorful mural around them. Caitlyn’s eyes sparkled as she pointed to one of Vi's older pieces, a wild explosion of colors that swirled into a sunset. “I love this one. It really captures the vibe of the neighborhood. You’ve got a way of bringing everything to life.”

Vi smiled, a mix of pride and warmth filling her chest. “Yeah? That one was inspired by the first time Jinx and I watched the sun set from that rooftop. We thought we finally made it up there.”

Caitlyn laughed softly, leaning closer. “I can imagine. You both probably felt like kings of the world.”

“Hell yea! And then we just sat there and ate way too much takeout. It was a good night.” Vi’s gaze drifted over the mural, nostalgia flooding her mind. “I wanted to capture that feeling of freedom, you know?”

Caitlyn smiled warmly, brushing her fingers against Vi’s. “You’re really talented, you know? I’m proud of you for putting yourself out there.”

“Thanks, Cupcake. It means a lot coming from you,” Vi said, her heart swelling. Then, with a teasing grin, she added, “Maybe one day, I’ll even let you help me paint something that doesn’t involve hearts.”

Caitlyn rolled her eyes playfully. “How about we compromise? I’ll do the hearts, and you can do whatever wild abstract thing you have in mind.”

“Deal,” Vi laughed, feeling lighter and more connected. They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, taking in the vibrant colors surrounding them.

“Okay, but I’m definitely going to need some of your tips if I’m going to get this right,” Caitlyn said, glancing at Vi with a mock-seriousness.

Vi chuckled. “I’m ready to teach you everything I know. Just wait until you see my secret techniques!”

“Secret techniques? Now I’m intrigued,” Caitlyn replied, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Yeah, you’ll have to come back for a private lesson,” Vi said, nudging her playfully.

“Count me in..” Caitlyn whispered, biting her bottom lip, her enthusiasm infectious. Her voice was low and sensual as she tugged Vi closer by her shirt, leaning in for a soft, deep kiss, grinning against Vi’s lips. Vi blinked, her face flushed as they pulled away, a smile spreading across her face.

Vi gently tugged Caitlyn by the arm, her heart racing. “Okayy let’s head back home like right now,” she said, the kiss lingering in her thoughts. Caitlyn giggled, the sound light and joyful, as they started to walk away together, both excited for what the future would hold, their hearts in sync with the promise of more adventures to come.
