OR Kanamizu Week Day 6 : Date Night

Work Text:

Kanade paced around her small kitchen, glancing at the clock every few seconds. Ten more minutes. Only ten more minutes before Mizuki was supposed to arrive, but her nerves twisted time, stretching those minutes into what felt like an endless wait. The idea of baking a cake together had sounded so fun when Mizuki suggested it over text last week, full of excitement and exclamation points. But now that the moment was almost here, Kanade couldn’t help but feel a little nervous.

Baking wasn’t something she’d ever been good at, and even though Mizuki had assured her it would be easy, she still wasn’t sure. She was used to small comforts—quiet time alone, her music, her routines. The thought of mixing ingredients and measuring things out just right felt strangely complicated. What if she messed up? What if the cake turned out awful and ruined their night?

She glanced down at her hands, already dusted with a bit of flour from preparing the countertop. She’d placed the mixing bowls and spoons just so, hoping that everything would be ready by the time Mizuki arrived. The sugar, butter, and vanilla extract sat on the counter, surrounded by a small handful of nervous thoughts she couldn’t quite shake.

Just then, she heard a soft knock at the door. The sound jolted her, sending her heart skipping. She hurriedly brushed her hands down her apron, trying to calm herself. Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and was immediately greeted by Mizuki’s bright, eager grin.

“Kanade!” Mizuki greeted with a beaming smile, practically bouncing on their toes as they stepped inside and slipped off their shoes. The cool autumn air followed them in, a fresh contrast to the cozy warmth inside. They had a bag filled with baking supplies hanging from one arm, and their eyes sparkled with excitement. “Ready to make the best cake ever?”

Kanade couldn’t help but feel her own spirits lift at Mizuki’s enthusiasm. It was contagious, filling the room with a light, buoyant energy that seemed to make her little apartment feel just a bit cozier. She smiled shyly, nodding as she closed the door behind them. Her fingers fidgeted a little at the hem of her apron, nervous but excited. “Yes, I think so,” she murmured softly. “I’m just glad you know what you’re doing. I’ve never really… baked anything successfully before.”

Mizuki waved off her concerns with a laugh, carrying their bag into the kitchen and setting it down with a confident flair. “Pfft, don’t worry about a thing. I have a secret recipe for success: a lot of sugar, a lot of fun, and some love.”

Kanade’s cheeks warmed at that last part, and she quickly looked away, trying to hide her smile. Mizuki noticed, of course, and grinned to themselves but didn’t comment. Instead, they busied themselves with setting out the ingredients they’d brought, each item placed on the counter with the grace of someone who knew exactly what they were doing.

“Alright,” Mizuki said, rolling up their sleeves and flashing her a playful grin, “first things first.” They reached for an egg from the carton, holding it out to her like a delicate, precious treasure. “You get the honor of cracking the first egg.”

Kanade took the egg carefully, holding it in her hands as if it might shatter at the slightest touch. She drew in a deep breath, steadying herself, and gave it a gentle tap against the side of the bowl, trying to look as confident as Mizuki seemed. But her hand slipped just a little, and a tiny piece of shell fell into the bowl with a soft plop.

Her face flushed, and she looked up at Mizuki with an embarrassed, almost apologetic smile. But Mizuki only chuckled, their eyes twinkling as they fished the shell out with a spoon. “Hey, that’s the perfect start! All part of the process, Kanade-chan,” they reassured her with a warm smile. “Besides, you should’ve seen me the first time I tried this. I ended up with more eggshell than egg.”

Kanade’s nervous smile grew into a small laugh, feeling her confidence inching up thanks to Mizuki’s easygoing attitude. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d laughed in the kitchen, let alone had fun with someone here.

“Now, flour duty,” Mizuki continued, pulling out the bag of flour with a dramatic flourish and handing her a measuring cup. “Think you can handle it?”

Kanade took the measuring cup with both hands, holding it like she was accepting a great responsibility. With Mizuki watching closely, she scooped out the flour, pouring it slowly into the bowl. Mizuki’s gaze was warm and encouraging, making Kanade feel like she was doing something much more important than just measuring ingredients.

With every step, Mizuki guided her gently, showing her how to mix in the sugar, butter, and vanilla with easy, confident motions. They hummed softly as they worked, creating a background melody that made Kanade feel oddly at ease. Before long, flour dusted their hands and forearms, and Kanade even managed to get a bit of flour smudged on her cheek, which Mizuki quickly noticed.

“Look at you!” Mizuki teased, reaching over and brushing a thumb lightly over Kanade’s cheek, wiping away the little dusting of flour. “You’re a natural, you know? Such a pro baker already.”

Kanade’s cheeks warmed even more at the gentle touch, and she looked down, smiling shyly. “I just had a good teacher,” she admitted, her voice soft but filled with gratitude. There was something about Mizuki’s presence, their patience and their laughter, that made her feel lighter, more confident.

The batter came together beautifully under their teamwork, thick and smooth, with a rich, sweet scent. Mizuki picked up the bowl and gave the batter a final, playful swirl with the spatula before pouring it into the cake pan with a flourish that made Kanade smile.

After they slid the cake into the oven, Mizuki leaned back against the counter with a satisfied sigh, wiping their flour-dusted hands on a dish towel. Kanade joined them, leaning against the opposite side of the counter, her fingers fiddling with the edges of her apron. She felt a sense of calm, a warmth she wasn’t quite used to but found herself embracing.

Kanade found herself watching Mizuki quietly, a gentle contentment filling her as she took in the sight of them relaxed and smiling in her kitchen. Spending time like this, so close, so comfortable, was still new to her. She wasn’t used to being with someone who made everything feel so natural, like baking together was something they’d done a hundred times before.

Mizuki caught her gaze and offered her a soft, knowing smile. “See? Told you this would be fun,” they said, their voice a little softer, a little more intimate.

Kanade nodded, her fingers still fidgeting but her eyes soft. “It’s all thanks to you Mizuki. I don’t think I could’ve done this on my own.”

Mizuki’s smile grew, and they reached over to give her hand a reassuring squeeze. “Anytime, Kanade. Anytime you want to try something new, I’ll be here.” Their hand lingered for a moment, warm and steady in hers, before they pulled back and glanced at the oven with a grin. “Now, how about we make some hot chocolate while we wait? Cake deserves a perfect drink pairing, right?”

Kanade felt her heart skip, and a soft smile crept onto her face. She followed Mizuki’s lead as they gathered mugs and cocoa powder, and as the smell of chocolate filled the air, she felt the space between them grow even cozier.

———

Kanade led Mizuki to the cozy living room, where she’d already prepared a nest of soft blankets and cushions on the couch. It was an unspoken invitation, a little nook created just for them, and Mizuki’s face lit up when they saw it. With a playful grin, Mizuki plopped down and patted the spot beside them, encouraging Kanade to join.

Kanade settled in close, the soft blanket brushing against her arms, and together they began scrolling through the movie selection on her screen. Mizuki, always animated, had suggestions for almost every title they passed, making Kanade laugh with their dramatic impressions and exaggerated descriptions of plotlines. Eventually, they found a lighthearted, feel-good movie, one that seemed perfect for a night like this, and Mizuki hit play, snuggling down as the opening credits began to roll.

The warm aroma of the baking cake began to fill the room, and midway through the movie, the timer chimed from the kitchen. They exchanged excited glances before getting up to pull the cake out of the oven, and Mizuki could hardly wait to dive into the frosting. With spoons and a tub of frosting, they began covering the cake, Kanade focusing intently to get each swipe of frosting smooth while Mizuki added a playful touch, scattering sprinkles across the top.

They returned to the living room with two generous slices on their plates, the sweet warmth of the cake and frosting making Kanade’s worries feel distant, faded. She took the first bite and felt a smile spread across her face; it was soft, perfectly sweet, and delicious. Mizuki caught her expression and laughed, a mix of pride and happiness in their eyes. “See? We make a good team.”

They ate slowly, savoring each bite and laughing between bites as they shared stories and moments, hands brushing now and then as they reached for their forks. It was subtle, but each little touch sent a warm tingle through Kanade, making her feel grounded and light at the same time.

As the movie played on, the soft glow of the TV cast gentle shadows over the room, and the warmth of the cake and Mizuki’s presence made Kanade feel impossibly cozy. She felt her eyes growing heavier with each scene, and before she realized it, her head was dipping forward. In her half-sleepy state, she found herself leaning against Mizuki’s shoulder, comforted by the soft rise and fall of their breathing.

Mizuki noticed right away, their expression softening as they glanced down at Kanade’s peaceful face. With gentle care, they shifted slightly, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, allowing her to nestle closer against them. Kanade felt the warmth of Mizuki’s embrace surrounding her, her own breathing beginning to slow and deepen as she relaxed completely.

The movie continued to play, but Mizuki’s focus was entirely on Kanade now. They took in the softness of her expression, the gentle way her eyelashes brushed her cheeks, and the quiet trust in her posture as she leaned into them. In that tender moment, Mizuki could feel the rhythm of Kanade’s breathing in perfect sync with their own, a soft, unspoken connection that wrapped around them like a promise.

As Kanade finally drifted into sleep, Mizuki brushed a gentle hand over her hair, smoothing a few stray strands from her face. In the quiet of the room, they whispered, “Sweet dreams, Kanade.” The words were barely audible, but they held all the warmth and affection Mizuki had found in these moments shared between them.

Holding her close, Mizuki closed their own eyes, letting the warmth of the moment wash over them. They knew that they’d make as many memories like this as they could—simple, warm, and filled with happiness—because nothing felt more perfect than these quiet, fleeting moments spent by Kanade’s side, wrapped in the comfort of each other’s presence.
