Summary:

Her phone buzzes. Another notification from Instagram. Seulgi's posted another photo from Paris – this time it's her and her fiancée at the Louvre, both beaming at the camera with the glass pyramid gleaming behind them. Chapter 1: spider-girl

Chapter Text

The spider bite happened three years ago, but Irene still finds herself absently rubbing the spot between her thumb and index finger during quiet moments. Like now, as she sits on the fire escape, watching the sun bleed orange into the Manhattan skyline. Sixteen stories up, the city's perpetual noise becomes a distant hum, almost peaceful.

Almost.

Her phone buzzes. Another notification from Instagram. Seulgi's posted another photo from Paris – this time it's her and her fiancée at the Louvre, both beaming at the camera with the glass pyramid gleaming behind them. Irene's thumb hovers over the like button before she locks her phone instead. Some habits are harder to break than others.

The suit is getting uncomfortable in the summer heat, the spandex clinging to her skin like a desperate memory. But it's better than being recognized. Better than being Bae Joohyun, the quiet photography major who can't seem to graduate, can't seem to move forward. As Spider-Girl, at least she has purpose. Direction. Even if that direction is usually straight down the side of a building at terminal velocity.

"You're brooding again, Spider-Girl!"

Irene doesn't need to look down to know it's Sooyoung, leaning out of her window one floor below, probably wearing that insufferable smirk. Of all the buildings in New York, she had to pick the one with the most annoying neighbor in existence.

"I'm contemplating," Irene corrects her, not moving from her perch. "It's different."

"Contemplating what? How many criminals you can web up before dinner? Or maybe..." Sooyoung's voice takes on that knowing tone that makes Irene's stomach twist. "You're thinking about that Instagram post?"

Sometimes Irene wonders if enhanced reflexes and spider-sense were worth the trade-off of having Park Sooyoung as her self-appointed confidante. The girl notices everything, remembers everything, and worst of all, isn't afraid to use that information.

"I have patrol," Irene says shortly, standing up. The city stretches before her, a maze of possibilities and responsibilities. Somewhere out there, someone needs help. Someone always needs help.

"You know," Sooyoung calls out as Irene prepares to swing away, "not everything has to be about saving others. Sometimes you can save yourself too."

Irene lets gravity pull her forward instead of responding. The first swing is always the hardest – that moment of faith where you have to trust the web will hold, trust that you won't just fall. She's gotten used to it over the years, that initial lurch of her stomach, the way her heart seems to stop for a split second before muscle memory kicks in.

The truth is, she doesn't know how to save herself. Doesn't know if she wants to be saved. Being Spider-Girl is simple. Stop the bad guys. Save the civilians. Take photos for the Daily Bugle that make Spider-Girl look just heroic enough to keep the public's trust, but not so heroic that anyone gets suspicious. Repeat.

It's her other life that's complicated. The one where she sits in photography classes, pretending she doesn't already know how to capture the perfect angle of herself mid-swing. The one where she watches Seulgi's life unfold through carefully filtered squares on a screen, each post another reminder of what could have been if she'd just been brave enough to speak up before the spider changed everything.

The police scanner she hacked on her phone comes to life – something about a robbery in progress near Washington Square Park. Irene changes direction mid-swing, letting the familiar rush of adrenaline push away the thoughts of Seulgi, of Sooyoung, of the life she might have had if she'd made different choices.

Later, after she's webbed up the would-be robbers and made sure the terrified shop owner is okay, she'll climb back to her fire escape. Sooyoung will probably be waiting with takeout and unsolicited advice about moving on and living life. And maybe, just maybe, Irene will listen this time. But for now, she lets herself fall into the rhythm of the city, into the simple mathematics of trajectory and momentum, into the one part of her life where she knows exactly who she is and what she's supposed to do.

The spider bite might have given her powers, but it's the mask that gives her freedom. Even if that freedom comes with its own kind of cage.
