fireworks

Summary:

Her gaze flickered from one spot to another, seemingly determined to take in the entirety of the spectacle all at once.

The sound should've been overwhelming, but Izuku found himself too entranced with the girl in front of him to even notice.

"Beautiful, isn't she?" Ochako mumbled next to his ear.

"Yeah. Beautiful."

IzuOchaToga Week 2024!!! Day 1: Fireworks!

Notes:

Work Text:

"Are you sure about this?" Izuku asked, gnawing on his bottom lip. Ochako nodded her head with a determined glint in her eyes, swinging the picnic basket in her hands in tandem. Himiko just bounced on the balls of her feet, pumping her fists passionately.

"Of course!" Ochako responded as the lock on the handle clicked open with ease. "I told Mrs Midnight that we were inviting our girlfriend over." The door slammed open loudly, and Izuku panicked, rushing the other two outside onto the roof before it could slam again. "I just didn't tell her who our girlfriend is." Ochako said over her shoulder, digging a blanket out from the basket.

Locking the door with a resounding click, Izuku deflated pitifully. It wasn't that he didn't want Himiko here with them. He really did! It was New Year's, and she really, really, really wanted to see the fireworks. Specifically, she wanted to see the fireworks from UA's roof. And Izuku wanted her to be happy! Just... he got paranoid sometimes.

Thankfully, Himiko giggling gleefully and pulling him into a suffocating hug brought him out of his own thoughts. "Thank you, Izuku..." She cooed in his ear.

Dragging him to the blanket Ochako had set down, Himiko let go of him to watch Ochako pull the prepared food out of the basket from over her shoulder. Feeling her warmth on her back, Ochako laughed, holding a chocolate covered strawberry up to Himiko's lips. Himiko snatched it with her teeth, devouring the snack in seconds.

Izuku took a deep breath, watching the time. Not long until the fireworks started now. Moving closer to his girlfriends, he sat shoulder to shoulder with Ochako, leaning on her slightly as she entertained Himiko with fun facts about New Years.

Himiko had never celebrated New Years before. Or, well, she had, but not traditionally. Her parents seemed to try to avoid her no matter what, from what she had told Izuku and Ochako. And the league had tried, but none of them had grown up normally either. They all knew the idea behind New Years, but their celebration seemed more like a caricature than anything. Again, Himiko's words, not Izuku's.

Izuku...loved Himiko. He felt his face immediately flush at the thought, but he pushed past it. He wanted her to be happy. And if that meant potentially getting caught by pro-heroes, just so she could watch some fireworks, then Izuku would do it in a heartbeat. He just wished his body would get with the memo and stop being so damn anxious!

Before he could voice any of his thoughts, his phone alarm rung. 1 minute until midnight. Distantly, he could hear the shouts of people counting down, all across the city.

Ochako and Himiko had started counting down to, and Ochako placed a hand on his knee as she did. He joined in soon after.

Himiko giggled in the middle of saying "Fourteen-", sounding more like "Fourtee-hee-n." And Ochako abruptly snorted, the three of them all dissolving into flustered laughter.

3.

Himiko calmed down, taking huge gulps of air to stop the giggles.

2.

Ochako fanned her face, looking from Himiko to Izuku.

1.

Ochako smiled sweetly at Izuku, and Izuku, very smartly, blinked back.

The cacophonous sounds of fireworks setting off filled the air, along with the scent of gunpowder. Izuku didn't know how he knew what gunpowder smelt like, but he didn't mind it.

Himiko sat on her knees, gaping at the night sky. Ochako went to say something to her, but before she could, Himiko was gone.

Himiko scrambled to her feet clumsily, swaying dangerously as she threw herself forward, skidding to a stop at the edge of the roof. Izuku's voice caught in his throat as he instinctively tried to call out, warning her to be more careful, before Ochako lightly nudged him.

"Don't." She whispered softly, squeezing his shoulder with an affectionate smile. The bubbles of dread welling in Izuku's throat popped one by one in tandem with her reassurance. "She's fine. Just look at her."

Reluctantly, Izuku pulled his eyes away from Ochako, landing on Himiko. She was... she was smiling brightly, ooh-ing at the beautiful, colored bursts of gunpowder streaking through the night sky.

Her loose hair fluttered in the wind, cascading and framing her face like sheets of silk. The light from the fireworks reflected from her eyes, yellow irises morphing from green, to pink, to red.

"Yeah. Beautiful."

Himiko whipped her head towards them, wide grin stretching from ear to ear. The wind pushed her hair to the side as she called out, "Come on, you two! You guys can't miss another second of this!"

Izuku wanted to mention that she was missing out on some of the fireworks by looking at them, and not the sky, but he decided to ignore it. He didn't want to do anything to decrease the raw joy in her expression.

"Coming!" Ochako laughed, lacing her fingers with Izuku's as she dragged the both of them up. Jogging to the railing, they both stood around Himiko. She looked from Izuku to Ochako, before her smile grew impossibly larger.

"I love you, Izuku! And I love you, Ochako! I love you two so much!" She cheered loudly, their heartbeats beating in sync louder than the bangs of the fireworks.

This. This was why Izuku would do whatever it took to make Himiko happy. And Ochako. He loved the both of them, so much.

"Happy New Year!"
