Work Text:
It's been another long day for Justice. Every say she has to be at the court, seeing - well, not seeing - the government do horrible things in her name.
She tries to influence things, to ensure justice is actually served, but her abilities are limited by the lack of faith in the system. She doesn’t blame people for losing faith - she's almost lost it too.
As the final trials begin to wrap up, she finds that her mind keeps wandering to her amazing girlfriend, Liberty. She can't wait to return home into her waiting arms.
She sighs as she stows her scales, which are more out of balance than ever. She begins the long walk home.

Liberty gazes out across the Hudson, reminiscing on what things used to be like. Thousands came in, seeking better lives, and she would watch over them, ensuring their safe passage.
Now, the only people who come down the river are tourists and cargo ships. Liberty sighs, the promise if America hasn't seemed so far since the Gilded Age.
She can't wait until Justice gets back so they can cuddle. At least she can watch over one person.
As the sun sets, Liberty sees Justice on the last ferry to her island. She waits patiently at the foot of her pedestal for her girlfriend to arrive. She's long since learned that even though Justice is blind, she did not want - or need - help getting around.
When Justice arrives, she sits on Liberty's lap with practiced ease. She wraps an arm around Liberty's neck and rests her head on her shoulder.
“Bad day?” Liberty asks.
“Yeah,” Justice sighs. “People suck.”
Liberty's expression darkens. “Did someone hurt you?” Liberty asks, beginning to check Justice for any injuries.
Justice waves for Liberty to stop fussing and she reluctantly does. “No, no, I'm fine. It's just mean words. People are blaming me for the state of the justice system…” she sniffs and rubs away a few tears slipping from beneath her blindfold.
Liberty cradles her. “You know that's not true.” She kisses her forehead. “And I'll clobber anyone who says otherwise.”
Justice giggles, “Thanks, babe.”
“Always,” Liberty says firmly.
Justice sits up in Liberty's lap and presses a gentle kiss to her lips. “You always know how to cheer me up.”
“Of course I do; it's my job.”
“Always lighting the way - even though I can't see,” Justice jokes.
Liberty laughs, “It's easy to forget. You're never held back by it.”
Justice smiles. “I appreciate it.”
They sit together like that for the next hour, watching the sunset and occasionally exchanging chaste kisses and tender looks. After the sun sets, Liberty stares up at the stars.
Justice breaks the long silence, “As much as I would love to sit here for hours, I'm getting hungry.”
Liberty nods. “Yeah, my legs are going numb.”
“You callin’ me fat?”
“Maybe. But I love your thick thighs.”
They both laugh, then head into their home. Liberty cooks dinner while Justice rattles on about the cases she witnessed, occasionally broken up by remarks about corrupt judges and racist jurors.
At last, dinner is done and Liberty serves them both.
“Smell delicious, as usual,” Justice says, giving Liberty a quick peck on the cheek.
“Thanks, babe,” Liberty responds.
The two eat in comfortable silence, enjoying each other's presence. When they finish, Liberty asks, “Wanna watch a movie?”
“God, yes.”
“I knew you'd say that.”
They put on a movie, and as they watch, Liberty describes what's happening to her blind companion. Eventually, Justice, tired from the day, falls asleep on Liberty's shoulder.
Liberty carries her up to their bedroom. She lays her in their bed, briefly admiring her golden features as she rests peacefully.
Liberty lies next to her, wrapping her arms around her girlfriend, who instinctively snuggles into her. She falls asleep, the familiar weight and warmth of her girlfriend lulling her into a deep sleep.
