“Thanks for coming guys! Since I invited you all out here it’s my treat.” Jungeun cheered as she got up to pay for the bill.
“Are you saying I can’t pay for my own food? I don’t need you paying for me. I don’t need you paying for Jeemin either. I can pay for my girlfriend's meal.” Jiyoon stated coldly as she walked up and followed Jungeun to the cashier.
“Why is everything a competition for them!” Koko whined, smacking her head on the table.
The rest of the girls sighed as Saebi easily started up another conversation about some random flowers.
“Oh my god did you see Jeemins post? Jiyoon took her to a beach and look at all the cute pictures they took at sunset! Jeemin looks so pretty in that like Jiyoon is such a good photographer ahh!”
“Couple goals for real! I wish I had someone treating me like that.”
Jungeun grimaced as she walked by two girls gossiping about Jeemin’s new post. “Babe! Why don’t we go out of town this weekend for a nice date?”
Sarang sighed and turned around. “This is because Jiyoon took Jeemin to the beach isn’t it. You know not everything has to be a competition right?”
“What no– I just wanted to hang out with my girlfriend that’s all! Please come with me?” Jungeun pleaded, knowing that Sarang wouldn’t be able to resist.
“Okay fine, but only because we haven’t hung out enough recently and I miss you.” She caved, smiling slightly at the triumphant look on Jungeun’s face.
“Bro Jeemin, Jungeun just took me on the best date of my life and I can’t believe it only happened because Jiyoon took you to the beach and took some aesthetic photos of you.” Sarang complained as spotted Jeemin at lunch, quickly sliding into the seat next to her.
“You would think that they would be over this silly feud by now.” Mai inserted as she sat down across from the two girls.
“Wait what even happened for the two of them to be so competitive?” Sarang asked curiously. “I heard something happened but Jungeun always brushed it off whenever I tried to ask her.”
“Basically when Jiyoon was 7 and Jungeun was 5 the two of them were neighbours. Jungeun ran into Jiyoon causing Jiyoon to scrape her knee on the pavement. So obviously Jiyoon cried and didn’t like Jungeun. The two of them were also super good singers so they met again at a competition when Jiyoon was 13 and Jungeun 11 and Jiyoon ended up beating Jungeun and it broke Jungeun’s winning streak. I think she was at like 6 or something? I dunno, pretty high. Either way she was salty over that and when they realised they were going to the same school…” Jeemin supplied.
“Is that why Jungeun joined the photography club and Jiyoon the art? To try to one up one another?”
“Precisely. Jiyoon and I got together midway through grade 9 and Jungeun wasn’t really having it. Of course she wasn’t just going to find a girlfriend just to one up Jiyoon so she ended up joining the dance club because she knew Jiyoon wouldn’t have the time to pick up another huge hobby.”
“Those two and their competitiveness actually scared Koko once.” Mai spoke up. “Koko had just transferred here and she didn’t know much about anything. She joined the dance club and got to know Jungeun as a nice hardworking girl. On her second week here Jiyoon and Jungeun got into that huge ‘who is the best singer’ war and Koko came to me because she was so surprised to see Jungeun so scary.”
“Oh I remember that, Saebi also came to me because in art club the two of them were so competitive and completely zoned out everyone else.” Sarang laughed.
“It’s such a shame that they don’t get along. I swear, we would be able to go on the best double dates!” Jeemin sighed.
“We would! We should totally set one up some time.”
“Do you really think Jungeun and Jiyoon would agree to that? It’s going to be a disaster with them constantly trying to one up each other.”
“Mini golf?”
“They’ll try and see who gets it in with the least strokes.”
“Amusement park?”
“We’re going to blow so much money away just off of them trying to see who can get the most stuffed animals for their girlfriends. As much as I love stuffed animals I don’t need Jiyoon spending a couple hundred dollars on getting some for me.”
Mai snorted as she remembered the last time she had third wheeled Jeemin and Jiyoon on an amusement park date. Somehow around 20 different stuffed animals all bore some resemblance to Jeemin and in the end all three girls walked out of there with a lifetime supply.
“Karaoke?”
“You can’t tell me you actually believe that’s a good idea…” Mai deadpanned as Sarang slumped down over the lunch table.
“I don’t have any other ideas. Bowling?”
“Someone’s going to walk out with a serious injury because I do not trust Jiyoon with a bowling ball. Honestly though, we aren’t going to ever go on a double date together, it’s just not going to work out. The girls are way too competitive.”
“A double date isn’t going to work out because we don’t get along? Oh you’re on Jeemin. Jungeun and I are going to take you and Sarang out on the best double date imaginable. Right Jungeun?” A voice cut in.
“Hell yeah, this is going to be a killer double date. Just you wait girls. Jiyoon and I are going to have this thing all planned out.”
Sarang and Jeemin turned around to see Jiyoon and Jungeun walking out of the cafeteria chatting away with smiles on their faces.
“Oh god what did we just do.”
“I wish I knew Jeemin…I wish I knew.”
“Guess you two have to hope and pray you make it out of this alive.” Mai chuckled as she looked at the mortified expressions on the two girls' faces. She wished them the best of luck, clearly the two of them needed it.
So you’re telling me, they put their differences aside, agreed to alternate choosing places to go to, putting down their competitiveness and pride, just so you two could enjoy a nice little double date together?
“Yes…?”
“They didn’t fight a single time over small trivial things like they normally do?”
“Yes…?”
“And you got Jiyoon to play on a just dance machine and Jungeun to make a whole collage of photos taken on the date together”
“Yeah…”
Mai, Koko, and Saebi were gathered in Jeemin’s dorm, listening to Sarang and Jeemin relay the events that had occurred on their double date as they played a game of uno.
“Is it that surprising?” Jiyoon asked as she invited herself into her girlfriend’s dorm.
“Are we that bad normally?” Jungeun asked as she followed Jiyoon in.
“Yes.” came 5 voices simultaneously.
“We do get along sometimes, it’s just easier to push ourselves to do better at things if we have someone to compare ourselves with. Like how Jeemin and Yunah push each other to be better in physics and now the two of them are 1st and 2nd in the whole school and are unstoppable when they compete as a team against other schools.” Jungeun replied nonchalantly, quietly turning to Jiyoon to see if she had said something wrong.
“Why are they looking at me like I just grew another head?” Jungeun whispered.
“No clue, it’s so creepy though.” Jiyoon whispered back.
“My life has been a lie.” Saebi finally spoke up.
“I’m scared.” Koko followed.
“This entire time…” Mai gasped in shock, still soaking up all the information.
“I need something sweet, something really sweet to wake me up from this dream.” Jeemin got up and started rummaging through her snack cabinet.
“What do you mean? Sarang and I are right here. We are the sweetest couple ever right babe!”
“Hah, sweetest? Yeah right. Maybe Sarang is sweet but you are more the salty kind.”
“You’re one to speak. If I’m salty then you’re bitter. There’s always a terrible aftertaste.”
“Well at least they are back to normal now?” Saebi tried as Koko, Mai, Sarang and Jeemin joined her back at the table and they zoned out Jiyoon and Jungeun's argument in the back.
“I can’t believe they can just switch in and out like that. Lowkey terrifying.” Sarang whispered.
“Highkey terrifying. Maybe we should hold back on double dates.”
“For sure.”
“Did you guys just say double date?” Jiyoon practically screamed.
“They did! Let’s get to planning. Next weekend works for you two right? Alright it’s planned now. Come on, we have to make this one even better than the last!”
“You got it!”
The two singers practically ran out without even letting the other girls have a chance to speak.
“Guess I’ll be seeing you more often.” Jeemin tried to joke as Sarang shook her head and they started a new game of uno.
