Healing cheeks

Summary:

An AU where Toga instead of becoming a villain gets adopted by Inko and becomes a nurse in end she meets Ochako at the sports festival. Inspired by the prompt “Vampire working at a blood bank AU” from Tumblr

Notes:

I wanted to write something MHA related and ended up with this. Sorry if this is bad and yeah Toga deserved much more but well there's no way to change canon (Yes there is and it's called fan fiction). Stranger? I thought you were gonna say blackmailing but anyways, sometimes it’s just better to use imagination <(_ _)>

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Her current life was ironic, she was sure her life was one of those comedy shows that air in the evenings and have really low ratings because well, her circumstances and those that had led her to this point were really funny and purely coincidental. They had started because of some kind lady, a nurse, who had taken care of her in a hospital after a situation took place.

She had been blessed with a quirk but cursed with a horrible one. In modern society having a special ability was a must if you wanted to be treated as a human. If you didn't have one you were one of nature's many mistakes. Quirkless people had the highest suicide rates in the world and younger generations had a decreasing number of individuals without a quirk.

But having a quirk that wasn't interesting or relatively stupid you were considered a villain, society wouldn't accept you in the slightest just because you had the choice to become a villain and ravage cities because surely a strong quirk would make you power hungry and blood thirsty. Excluding anyone like that was a bad idea, they would hate you for hating them especially if those wrong doings affected them as children. While trying to prevent people from becoming villainous they were just ensuring hero work.

Her parents had been thrilled to finally have a kid, especially a girl, she was a spoiled brat until she got her quirk. On paper it sounded fine, maybe in other cultures this would have made her respectable or even a hero since being able to imitate appearances just by drinking a bit of blood was a useful ability that could benefit you while doing hero work but it also gave her an especial interest for the same liquid. Her parents noticed that attraction and thought it morbid enough to dump the kid onto the streets and move out of the country to start a new life without a crazy daughter.

She had lived on the streets for a while before she encountered any trouble. Looking for food in trash cans, avoiding people and police officers, sleeping on parks and staying out of view until she had slept in a shady place and very insistent man had gone after her, she had ran as far as she could but in the end a hero appeared and stopped the man before he had the chance to do anything. At the time she wasn't sure if it was a hero or a vigilante given that his entire attire was black except for a very resistant looking scarf that he used as a weapon. As a safety precaution she was brought to a hospital and a relatively small woman took care of her.

She would bring her food and stay a while. Sometimes he would just talk to her even if she didn't answer verbally or bring her some basic art supplies so she could entertain herself while they figured out what to do with her or when CPS could come get her. She had also been allowed into the playground located in the pediatrics zone and while it was fun not having to hide from every adult or person really, the novelty wore off fast since after all that time living on her own she now felt like a prisoner.

After they found out that she couldn't be discharged because there were no legal guardians she was going to be taken in by someone with a foster care license which turned out to be the same nurse since it was the only person she would speak to. She knew that the woman had a son and that she had the license because of her job but still it was nice to know someone had cared enough about other people to actually go through with the paperwork.

The nursers name was Inko Midoriya and her son was Izuku and while she did really wanted to help her, she had to make sure that Izuku was alright with this so a meeting was scheduled for the to meet and decide if adopting Toga was a good idea or not. It was decided that they would play in the playground and maybe eat together in the cafeteria.

It had gone fine and she could now say that she knew All Might’s biggest fan and well yes the kid was a hero enthusiast and a ball of sunshine also he was quirkless and she had expected him to be afraid of her because well her quirk wasn't really friendly but he had talked non/stop about every use that she could give it, every profession and mundane use.

She was officially adopted soon after, her life was nice after the fact in terms of she got the quirk counseling she needed  and therapy that she had greatly benefited from. While Izuku was really interested in becoming a hero, she had been inspired by their mother to pursue a profession in the medical field. She really wanted to help people and that was how she had been helped and loved, so she wanted to give someone else the same chance she had.

They had both gone to the same schools so she had to defend him from idiots who couldn't use their brain enough to comprehend that even without a quirk Izuku was a human who deserved respect and compassion. Bakugo had been a bastard when they were kids so she had paid him with the same coin and done everything she could to bother him so they didn't really get along. Still, Izuku couldn't help being nice to him.

A few months ago she had entered a medicine school where Recovery for imparted some subjects and she was ready to fulfill her dream just like Izuku, who had gotten a quirk out of a … hairy situation, and had secured himself a place UAs hero course. While attending school he made new friends and they had even gone to their apartment once for a school project, she was sure her mother had shown them every existing photo of Izuku and maybe even hers.

In her school they were often brought as extra help if needed which more often than not meant being some kind of assistant in hospitals or private events like the Sports Festival so she was there because of their mother’s insistence, she wanted to know if Izuku broke any of his bones and Himiko would be able to contact her directly way faster than any teacher or school nurse.

And yes she knew most hero students were really fit to say the least, she had seen how muscly Izuku had gotten over just a few months and had even trained a bit with him just for shits and giggles. Still she couldn't help but admire (oogle really) at the way they looked even while wearing their gym uniforms.

Especially a girl with brown short hair that had fought Katsuki, the battle had not seemed all that impressive at first until the debris started falling and while yes, she looked like she was about to puke on national TV she had still tried her best. Now said girl was laying down on one of their cots and Himiko was assigned to care for the patients in that section so it was just luck (or faith)(or maybe a bit of both)

She was going to just hand her a bottle of water and nothing else would happen because she was a professional (obviously a hero student wouldn't be interested in her and well there were shitty heroes that only really cared about fame, what if she was like that)

“Good evening, I'm the volunteer assigned to this area and I brought you some water. Call me if you need something else” She put on her best customer service smile and tried to sound as friendly as humanly possible.

The air filled with tension and their eyes locked for what felt like ages but had probably been less than a minute, they were staring intently at each other when the hero student finally spoke “Your number”

“What?” Straight to the point, maybe that was the adrenaline talking.

“You told me to ask for stuff if I needed it, I need your number please”

Oh

Unexpected

Really unexpected

“Bold and courageous I like it, ll write it down for you and while I'm at it, do you want some salty crackers” Still professionalism couldn’t be entirely left out of this and she really needed to improve at being good at handling situations.

But she really did like it

“Yes please”

“I'll be right back “

Toga went to the nurse station, opened the cabinet where the crackers were stored and wrote her phone number on a sticky note that she then attached to the crackers and went back to the hero's bedside.

“Here you go”

The brunette´s cheeks were slightly rosy when she took the small package that contained a big possibility for both of them, a one in a lifetime opportunity to have a happy ending that not every universe could have. After that, Toga continued with her tasks until her brother was brought in with a wrecked hand and she, faithful to her word, had called her mother. When everything was solved and she got home. It took her less than a minute to fall asleep once she had sat down on the couch while trying to watch TV.

The next day there was no school or community service to assist to so she decided to sleep in, and later that day she got a text.

“Hi, wanna go out sometime? =D”

She waited 2 minutes to not seem desperate and then answered with a simple “Yeah! Just let me know when you're free”

She was fulfilling her dreams, had a family that really loved her for who she was and a date. Life was good.

Notes:

Ochako before the date: Fuck why did I do that
Ochako after the date: So glad I did that
