Chapter Text
The heat from the dashboard radiated gently on the angel’s eyelids, shut to shield him from the sun, setting on the horizon. The sky was dramatically lit with bright orange and purple and the conifers behind the old jeep were growing darker as the light slowly dimmed.
The song of a thrush came warbling in the distance, somewhere in the undergrowth, and Castiel stirred at the melancholic call.
His limbs were heavy and his head pounding with a dull, squeezing pain. His scarred grace ached softly, rooted in his vessel, a crucible of celestial essence and human weakness.
Last time his body had needed rest he was still sleeping in the back of a Gas’n Sip, stocking shelves and counting change.
He opened his eyes in time to catch the last rays of the diving sun. A ringing in his ears was the only trace of the high pitched frequencies of his native tongue, he was choosing to tune down the voices of his heavenly siblings, singing to each other through the ether. He reached for the car radio instead and the air filled with a different sound.
