Chapter 1: I need an angel

Chapter Text

The presidential suite at the lucky 38 was never empty, but until a 6 months ago it felt like a shell of what it had grown to be. Companions would come and go but the piece of the puzzle that stuck them all there was nowhere to be seen, for three months it only held 2 souls with nowhere better to go. Veronica, Rex, and occasionally Raul would come by to check in, see if Six had returned and usually leave Veronica with some comforting words as the wait for her closest friend drug on to a point her hope could no longer reach.
But eventually she did return, as she always does, just now a little more quiet, and a few more surgical scars.
those quiet nights turned to days turned to months, and eventually six seemed to find her voice once again. And despite the physical scars that painted the circumference of her skull fading much slower, Veronica was still there for her with unwavering loyalty. Listening to Six sharing and over-sharing her time in what seemed like a different world to even her now.

“I don’t know Ronnie it’s just”
Six’s hand comes up to push her short choppy hair back from her face, more of a nervous tick then practicality
“Ever since coming back from the big MT it’s been so hard to meet people”

The shorter of the two briefly looks up from her old pre-war fashion magazine, seemingly only half-invested in her companions relationship failures
“Do you think it has anything to do with ur thing with the robots-“
“No veronica I think it’s because I’ve gained a little weight “ the courier rolls her eyes “yes it’s because of the fucking robots. I mean I still have my stealth suit whom I’m pretty sure is in love with me, not to mention Doctor Dala”
Almost as if by instinct upon saying their name, the courier takes a deep breath before continuing,
“how do I even start to explain what that was all about? That I had a pseudo sexual relationship with a sentient brain.”
Plopping down onto the bed beside Veronica, she drops her head down to her hands, elbows resting on her knees as she hangs her head down.
‘Like a scolded perrita’ Raul would muse if he saw the sorry state of his boss right now.
“Ronnie I have a breathing kink now! Do you know what that kinda thing does to a person? How do I even start to explain that to someone.”
A deep sigh leaves Veronica as she finally puts her magazine down, now turning her attention fully on a rather dejected looking Six beside her.
“First off, you don’t, Six. please tell me you haven’t actually scared off some poor guy like that.”
She does not earn a verbal response, instead six flops backwards onto the bed, seemingly giving up her ‘shamed puppy’ act and letting out a truly dejected huff, the courier looks up to Veronica who sits behind her at the head of the bed.
“It’s not like I’m trying to scare anyone off! I just need a little angel on my shoulder that will shut me up anytime I start saying anything strange and off putting.”
“Six what I think you need is a wing man, or I mean, in this case a wing woman” she says with a wiggle of her brows.
An almost transparent blush creeps its way up six’s neck at the idea
“You can’t be serious Ronnie”
“As serious as you are about that dumb nickname”
The scribe swings her legs off the bed before standing and walking towards the dresser.
“Me and you are going out tonight, Six and I’ll be damned if we leave without getting you laid by someone other than a prostitute”
Pausing, a smile quirks at the side of her lips
“Or a robot, that doesn’t count tonight either”
She reaches through her companions clothes, pulling out dresses that catch her eye. Namely of which, a long lacy black number, and a tight red short sequined dress that Six had originally picked up for Veronica, before realizing it may be a few sizes too large for her companion and opting to keep it for herself.
“So first things first, you’re gonna go take a nice hot bath, throw on one of your fancy little dresses and meet me outside the lucky 38 in 2 hours, yeah?”
Veronica barely allowed time for reaction before making her way towards the door, turning back to Six as she makes her way out
“Sound good Sixer?”
Eyebrows quirked up as she waited to be challenged
Six, still processing the instructions just nodded dumbly back at her, still laying flat on the bed, neck craned to watch her companion go.
As the door shuts she rolls onto her stomach, letting out a long groan into her hands as the plans for tonight sink in.
Looking over to the dresses veronica so kindly threw beside Six on the bed, all she can seem to think about is her best friend, and how weirdly comforting it felt for her to tell Six what to do.
More than that, she can’t stop thinking how that girl is going to be the death of her.
